- A curious display of 1980s corporate uber-synergy as Coca-Cola, Hard Rock Cafe and Saturday Night Live all came together for one WTF night in a back lot of Universal Studios in Hollywood to present a bizarre combination of decent music and bad comedy. For no apparent reason the show was broadcast live, and someone thought it would be a good idea to pair John "Cougar" Mellencamp as a new musical partner for Paul Simon. As far as I know, this was the first and only public performance by Simon & Mellencamp. I happened to be in the audience that night and will never forget it. The comedy cast included John Candy, Jon Lovitz, Laraine Newman, Dan Aykroyd and a brief appaearance by Chevy Chase. The music line-up featured Paul Simon, John Mellencamp, INXS, Sam Moore (of Sam And Dave), Booker T., The Blues Brothers Band, Ziggy Marley and Toni Childs. Across from the stage and behind the crowd, Jack Nicholson was there watching it all from a private box.
Such a good quality!!! That's what I was looking for because of INXS. Thank you very much!
Thanks for posting this remarkable recording! It was a blast!
Thank you for posting this. I was there. I won a trip from Coca Cola.
Weird I did not see you winning the trip from coca cola!!!
Holy shit. I was in the audience for this. My friend won a radio station contest
You are quite welcome --- glad you enjoyed it!
Great upload Gary, this is the best quality I have ever seen of this footage. Thanks!
This originally aired on Tuesday, September 13th, 1988.
That makes sense!!
I was there!
Great night, right? I'm pretty sure that this was the first and last performance by Simon & Mellencamp.
@@garyzych My wife won a promotion from a radio station here in Birmingham, AL we spent 3 days in LA. We were right in the front of Michael Hutchens and then moved over to the small stage for Mellencamp and Simon. You can see us clearly on the broadcast during “The Boxer”. There were celebs everywhere in the crowd and in bleachers to the side,Justine Bateman was standing beside us for the INXS songs. John Mellencamp waved and said hi while waiting to go onstage. We saw Stevie Nicks and a huge entourage roll up in limos. Lorne Michaels was constantly moving through the crowd directing the show.
Joe --- glad you & your wife got the VIP treatment that night! I worked in Coca-Cola marketing back then and was there as a guest also. We all got a great show!
I was there too! Pink shirt, sunglasses, black tie top left at 2:26
they gave us free t shirts and Jack Nichilson was introduced by chevy chase and it was amazing,, Inxs just killed it..
Thank you for this video. I remember seeing this when I was in highschool. Loved the performances. 🎭
Thanks for your comment. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I was there at the show and it was amazing, especially Simon & Mellencamp!
@@garyzych I would have loved to be there in person. I miss this era. The actors/comedians were fun to watch too. 😊
Lucky people who got to see hunky Michael in his prime!
Best recording I've come across; my gratitude.
You're welcome! Glad you enjoyed the show --- I sure did!
HOLY SHIT...I thought this was lost forever. I was there with my buddy Tony. We had just gotten off the Back To The Future ride, when some girl walked up to us and said do you want to be in the audience for a live show? We said sure, when? She said tonight at 7 or 8. We were just a few feet behind the blue and red girls at 2:22.
An incredible show for FREE, right?
@@garyzych What was cool, is I'm a metal guy. I play guitar in an AC/DC and Judas Priest tribute band. So for me, it was a chance to see live artists that I would have NEVER GONE to see live. To say we saw the great Michael Hutchence and INXS was awesome. I would never go see Paul Simon, or Ziggy...anyway you get the idea. Bravo sir for rescuing this on UA-cam.
INXS ✌️✌️✌️🇧🇷 💃 🇭🇲
There used to be a montage of these three songs from INXS on UA-cam Music.(Kick, Mystify and Never Tear Us Apart)Not Anymore..Seems to be happening more and more..Thanks for this!
Sure. Glad you enjoyed seeing it here.
Ah man --- sorry to hear that!
7:00 KICK
10:20 MYSTIFY
35:37 NEVER TEAR US APART
I watched this for INXS and the SNL folks. I ordered a t-shirt commemorating it (was it in TV Guide?) and a month later it was stolen out of my locker during gym class.
