i find it so crazy that at 5:42 j.d's dad is implanting the idea for how j.d himself will try and blow up the school. "you should have seen the fireworks, got it all here on video. loaded the upper floors with thermals, set the whole thing off with a norwegian in the boiler room. kaboom." this play is amazing
I love how at the end of dead girl walking reprise when they're wrestling for the gun and it goes off you cant tell who's been shot until JD falls to the ground. Thats always been one of my favourite small details and I hate when other shows don't do it.
One thing that I noticed after watching the movie is that (I am going off of Dans JD) in the movie it seems like jd never really loved veronica, and was just using her from the start, and she realizes this later on in the movie. While in the musical it seems like jd really did love veronica, and him murdering heather, kurt, and ram because he was quite literally crazy for her; and veronica knows this too as she threatens to break up with him because she thinks thats what might get him to stop. Also the difference in when both jd's found out veronica "unalived" herself. If I am remembering correctly, movie Jd laughed and explained his whole plan to blow up the school and had snuck into her room to unalive her. But when musical jd finds her, he looks genuinly heartbroken, but got over it quick and only fueled him further to blow up the school. Or he pretended to be sad because he knew she wasnt really dead seeing as when she finds him in the broiler room he doesnt seem overly surprised. Depending on how you view that scene in the musical it could change your whole perspective of the storyline. Last thing I want to mention is the scene just before jd blows up: In the movie when they say goodbye I think he says "our love is god" (I dont remember exactly) but he says it more sarcastically because he knows that veronica knows what his whole plan was and just the way they say goodbye has a "I'll see you in another life" vibe - which I find a perfect ending of their relationship. In the musical however their goodbye is a lot more heartfelt, and during the "our love is god" reprise you hear jd sing "Id trade my life for yours, and once I disapear, clean up the mess down here" because he realizes the trauma hes given veronica and thinks that the only way for here and the rest of the town to heal is for him to be gone. While hes singing that you hear veronica sing "oh my god, wait hold on, not this way" because shes realizing what hes doing. I heard this from someone else, but I completely agree with it and just thought I would throw it in, but; when veronica sings "say hi to god" at the end she knows that deep down his heart is in the right place and that she still thinks hes a good guy therefore thinks that he is going to go to heaven. This ending is a little bit more heart clenching, but I wouldnt change a thing about the way the musical finishes off their relationship. This is just something I realized after the 7th time rewatching the musical, and I thought I would share it. Sorry about the 3 almost 4 paragraphs, and hopefully this makes sense (its nearly 1am and I am not rereading it to make sure it makes sense)
Yeah, Gen X kid here and I totally agree. I grew up with this iconic film, so it took me longer than it probably should have for me to like this show... even though it's such a good musical, the film is still one of my all time favorites. Like I get why the musical has Veronica climb through J.D.'s window... it's a different time with a different zeitgeist and so the characters are different. But J.D. climbing through her window is like peak Gen X teen vibe. And yeah, movie J.D. finding her dead and being like well OK then, off I go to kill everyone... again... PEAK Gen X teen. They're both awesome... but they are very different. And I think it's just a generation thing... like in the 1st part of this review, Vistilia says that movie Veronica doesn't really react to the deaths... oh no my dear, Veronica is reacting in PEAK Gen X teen! But if you didn't grow up then, I can definitely see how it doesn't look that way. We didn't over emote. We dealt with stuff inside. And I can very much see her reaction. It's a very interesting generational character study. I dig it.
hypothetically if i were to say “september 1st, 1989" would other people want to, i dont know, maybe recite the entire musical with me????? i mean just hypothetically of course
This isn’t my my idea but I read it so long ago I forgot where it was from: 6:30 in kindergarten boyfriend Martha isn’t wearing her glasses and I think someone theorized that she didn’t want to see the fall distance from the bridge so she wouldn’t panic and cop out from jumping which makes this scene even sadder
0:32 in the movie he asks her if she took german, she tells him she took french. right after he gave her the Ich Luge line, he was making sure she didnt know
This one goes out to everyone who actually APPRECIATES “Kindergarten Boyfriend” because I’ve heard so many people say it’s the one song they skip and I- FUMING 😤
The way Jd is singing so innocently in Meant to be Yours, then "VERONICA". Truly a deranged masterpiece. you can tell that he went to some dark laces to play that character. Also, in Seventeen reprise, when Veronica reaches out to Heather M, shes being held on by Heather D, and the breaks free. I love that detail of character growth.
For some reason I always thought “I’m talking you and me in the summer of ‘83!” Was to trick ppl into thinking they’re gay and “that was one hell of a fishing trip” sorta tied it down like, oh they’re not gay it’s just a joke, idk, I only found out that it meant they WERE gay last year
no, they were 100% alluding to the fact that they're gay. "one hell of a fishing trip" just means that there was something else going on during that fishing trip if you know what i mean
Anyone else love a show when the characters are feral as all get out and the actors are cinnamon rolls? I saw a college production of Heathers. The girl who played Heather C had gone to my high school, and was literally one of the sweetest people I've ever met. She's a brilliant actress and it was wild.
Can we just appreciate the full chest voice belted A5? 9:25 that note among others (G#5 in Beautiful, G#5 in Dead Girl Walking, several C#5 and other high belts in other songs) makes Veronica one of the most difficult female roled to play on Broadway imo because most people simply cannot belt that high consistency.
5:10 I don't see people making this correlation very often and it's so worth highlighting it, shine a light reprise is like the result of McNamara's mental state during the musical, is played in a way that shows it's not "real" (and yet people hate Duke for this, specifically)
okay but has anyone else noticed that in seventeen veronica says “hold me tighter” and JD responds with “even closer” but it’s foreshadowing I am damaged because JD says “please stand back now, a little further” and i love that
Where does Dan get all that fkin energy oh my god- Not just the performance but also in the ending where hes jumping and clapping so aggressively and high fiving people. He did JD such justice in his performence.
i love that they made martha wear childish clothes bc she was only ever happy in kindergarten and she’s trying to preserve that sliver of happiness to stay alive…she does the same with the princess bride movie
my sister’s only flex is one that most heathers fans would LITERALLY KILL FOR. so when she went to see heathers, her fave song is meant to be yours. so she was singing it PASSIONATELY and the guy playing jd saw this, and APPARENTLY HE LOOKED HER RIGHT IN THE EYE AS HE WAS PERFORMING AND SMILED AT HER. LIKE.. WHAT
my friend/old castmate saw heathers on off-broadway at that particular performance, barrett accidentally cut her arm during dgw and was half dying onstage while my friend was dying laughing in the audience *this said friend of mine is now playing veronica at her university and karma may strike soon*
Martha wasn’t being homophobic, she had a crush on ram for 10+ years and so she was in denial that she was gay. I’m sure eventually she’ll realise that he is, indeed, gay gay homosexual gay.
Ok, Chandler might be Vistelia's favourite, but, hands down, mine's Macnamara. She's probably the kindest out of the three, the most enthusiastic, and just a leader. Her arc from the popular girls, to attempt of suicide, to soon redemption is beautiful and I love her relationship growing with Veronica. She was concerned on where Veronica was since of JD saying she was dead, and, honestly, I ship them. Also Vistelia, I will be willing to sing Seventeen with you.
i think we forgot to point out that when veronica is telling martha off, shes standing in the same pose as heather, trying to immitate her. at 2:46 theyre standing right by each other in the same pose. UNNOTICED DETAILS
The amount of little details in this musical is just amazing. I keep noticing something new, for example in the song "the me inside of me" you can notice that Veronica actually sees Heather C and follows her with a gaze
Heather's will always be my favorite musical. Beautiful vocals, great characters, and especially how it's the perfect mix of funny and super dark. I always loved how the handled the darker themes and showed just how genuinely fucked up a lot of the things going on were. Loved the movie, but the musical just did the emotion justice. The best part is the constant reminder that thESE ARE 17 YEAR OLDS. THEYRE KIDS(ish)
I loved her laugh so much, and meant to be yours the swich between soft and angry really shows how an abusive relationship really is and they did so great showing those little bits throughout the entire musical. Just french kiss
I don’t know who I got this from, but someone said that Veronica always saw the good in people, and by saying: “say hi to god” she truly believed JD still had good in him and could go to heaven or something isk
fun fact: the first night i met my boyfriend we found out we both love heathers and we sang the soundtrack together and danced in the kitchen. it was love at first ‘seventeen’ singalong
IT’S SO TRUE Martha isn’t there at all for shine a light because she runs off! I played Martha over the summer and it made me so sad thinking about it, but also my good friend played Fleming so I got to vibe backstage and watch them perform
how is noone talking about the fact that Veronica and Heather synced their poses at 2:50 which shows that Veronica is getting more like Heather?! it's soooo good
Fun fact: For the movie they were gonna let JD blow up the school but they thought it was too dark so they gave it a happy ending! This movie and musical could’ve ended SO MUCH WORSE
One of my own favorite details is during the scene where Martha thinks Kurt and Ram were murdered, her mouth is still moving while Kurt and Ram are talking, showing that she's still trying to explain her thought process but Veronica is zoning out and can't concentrate on her. Honestly the amount of little background details are so cool, I notice something new everytime I watch it!
When you think about it, Veronica accidentally confessing to the murders is kind of similar to the ending of American Psycho in a way. The ending hints that if your on the top, it doesn't matter what you do or what you confess to, everyone is the same and no one will believe you (the ending is interpreted in different ways, this one was just kind of similar to Veronica's accidental confession).
0:22 i think in the movie Veronica acts apathic of Ram and Kurt death 'cause she didn't know how to react, she burns herself with the cigarette shor after, to try feel something and JD just lights his cigarette in her burns, as she crawls up to him... i believe in the movie she goes into shock, while in the musical she is more reactive
2:48 notice how heather and veronica are in the same pose after how veronica just treated martha, she essentially was being "that bitch." That bitch being heather.
Oh my god I watched Heather's live when it came near my city so recently and Shine A Light WAS SO AMAZING Ms Fleming has a fantastic actor I can't even explain how good .also Dead Gay Son got such a huge amount of applause as it should LOL

i find it so crazy that at 5:42 j.d's dad is implanting the idea for how j.d himself will try and blow up the school. "you should have seen the fireworks, got it all here on video. loaded the upper floors with
thermals, set the whole thing off with a norwegian in the boiler room. kaboom." this play is amazing
I love how at the end of dead girl walking reprise when they're wrestling for the gun and it goes off you cant tell who's been shot until JD falls to the ground. Thats always been one of my favourite small details and I hate when other shows don't do it.
2:41 HOW COULD YOU NOT POINT OUT THAT VERONICA IS STANDING IN THE EXACT SAME WAY AS HEATHER
OOPS
we call it *the heather stand*
OH MY GOSH
Last thing I want to mention is the scene just before jd blows up:
In the movie when they say goodbye I think he says "our love is god" (I dont remember exactly) but he says it more sarcastically because he knows that veronica knows what his whole plan was and just the way they say goodbye has a "I'll see you in another life" vibe - which I find a perfect ending of their relationship.
Don’t be sorry lol, that’s an awesome analysis!
NAH YIU JUDT MADE THE WHOLE SCENE REPEAT IN MY MIND AND THE REALIZING IS NAKING ME SHED TEARS IF DAN’S JD AND VERBORINA IN THIS KUSICALETF.
I dig it.
hypothetically if i were to say “september 1st, 1989" would other people want to, i dont know, maybe recite the entire musical with me????? i mean just hypothetically of course
dear diary
i believe i'm a good person
you know, i think there's good in everyone
but here we are! first day of senior year
And, uh, I look around at these kids
the addition of "that blows" when she brings off jd blowing "her off" is phenomenal 😭
hard to believe that anyone else is back on heathers right now
This isn’t my my idea but I read it so long ago I forgot where it was from: 6:30 in kindergarten boyfriend Martha isn’t wearing her glasses and I think someone theorized that she didn’t want to see the fall distance from the bridge so she wouldn’t panic and cop out from jumping which makes this scene even sadder
DAMN
Absolutely sobbing
Stop that's actually so sad omg
this broke me holy shit
0:32 in the movie he asks her if she took german, she tells him she took french. right after he gave her the Ich Luge line, he was making sure she didnt know
This one goes out to everyone who actually APPRECIATES “Kindergarten Boyfriend” because I’ve heard so many people say it’s the one song they skip and I- FUMING 😤
Kindergarten Boyfriend is actually one of my favorites. It's sad how many people I know say they always skip that song.
honestly the high note at the end still impresses me so much bc the "ih" sound in "k*i*ndergarten" is a pretty tough vowel to belt like that
I skip it cause it makes me too sad 😔 it’s an amazing song though!
I can see why people like it but honestly personally i really dislike songs like Kindergarten Boyfriend
Fr! The song I actually amazing and make me sad when I saw her fall off :(
7:00 my friend was really shocked when i told them that kindergarten boyfriend was a s**cide note
I love Martha’s costume because it reflects how she was still stuck in kindergarten due to Ram
the way JD jumped back at 4:44 has me crying 😂 like he new there was bout to be something going on like “oh shit this girl bout to yank her hair off”
He jump like ge doesn't own a freaking gun
8:36 JD's pew pew pews are my favorite part of the musical
The way Jd is singing so innocently in Meant to be Yours, then "VERONICA". Truly a deranged masterpiece. you can tell that he went to some dark laces to play that character. Also, in Seventeen reprise, when Veronica reaches out to Heather M, shes being held on by Heather D, and the breaks free. I love that detail of character growth.
For some reason I always thought “I’m talking you and me in the summer of ‘83!” Was to trick ppl into thinking they’re gay and “that was one hell of a fishing trip” sorta tied it down like, oh they’re not gay it’s just a joke, idk, I only found out that it meant they WERE gay last year
LMAO THEY HAD A FULL ON MAKEOUT SESH
no, they were 100% alluding to the fact that they're gay.
She's a brilliant actress and it was wild.
this video has singlehandedly dragged me back into my heathers phase tysm
heehee join me
same , i always dip in and out of my heathers phase
HELP IVE HAD THIS PHASE SINCE LAST YR😅😅😅
I absolutely love how hyped the actor for JD seemed at the end
Dan’s energy makes me feel hype too
@@Vistelia btw what’s dans last name cause I wanna look him up
@@friendly_dinosaur Domenech!
I also love that part so much I wanna meet him irl he seems like such a cool dude
The offbway cast of heathers are insanely talented i don’t think they’ve ever found a better cast all around in general after this one
JD: Veronica, can we kiss?
Veronica: 3 people are dead because of us!
JD: That doesn't really answer my question
Veronica: What the fuck have you done.
JD: I worship you I'd trade my life for yours
Veronica: That doesn't really answer my question.
5:10 I don't see people making this correlation very often and it's so worth highlighting it, shine a light reprise is like the result of McNamara's mental state during the musical, is played in a way that shows it's not "real"
(and yet people hate Duke for this, specifically)
I love 10:03, the shakiness in his voice is so good I can't help but re-wind.
4:21 I'VE REWATCHED THIS SCENE SO MANY TIMES LIKE A YEAR AGO AND YET SEEING IT AGAIN STILL GAVE ME CHILLS????
EXACTLYYYYYY SAME WITH SEVENTEEN, OUR LOVE IS GOD, ETC. ALL THE DRAMATIC SONGS
KINDERGARTEN BOYFRIENDDD TOOOOOOOO
@@bunnyloverplayz1371 YES AGHHHHH THE ACTING IS SO INCREDIBLE
okay but has anyone else noticed that in seventeen veronica says “hold me tighter” and JD responds with “even closer” but it’s foreshadowing I am damaged because JD says “please stand back now, a little further” and i love that
I didn’t omg
the way that heather leaps into Veronica's arms just - I - 🥺🥺
i know it’s a really short song but i’m so freaking mad they didn’t include prom or hell in the album
We were robbed
Where does Dan get all that fkin energy oh my god-
Not just the performance but also in the ending where hes jumping and clapping so aggressively and high fiving people.
He did JD such justice in his performence.
i love that they made martha wear childish clothes bc she was only ever happy in kindergarten and she’s trying to preserve that sliver of happiness to stay alive…she does the same with the princess bride movie
5:37 i never noticed that seventeen is playing in the background here now i'm really crying
OMG YEAH
1:45 I LITERALLY LOVE THIS SONG SO MUCH I WANNA SING IT WITH SOMEONE
0:48 wow I’m just realizing this in the scene I always imagined the trip was during their teen years I forgot the time was still the 80s
my sister’s only flex is one that most heathers fans would LITERALLY KILL FOR. so when she went to see heathers, her fave song is meant to be yours. so she was singing it PASSIONATELY and the guy playing jd saw this, and APPARENTLY HE LOOKED HER RIGHT IN THE EYE AS HE WAS PERFORMING AND SMILED AT HER. LIKE.. WHAT
my friend/old castmate saw heathers on off-broadway
at that particular performance, barrett accidentally cut her arm during dgw and was half dying onstage
while my friend was dying laughing in the audience
*this said friend of mine is now playing veronica at her university and karma may strike soon*
Not a flex. That's just rude. Let the performers perform and the viewers view.
11:30 This exact frame is when a teenage movie ends: With a picture of everyone jumping and doing cool poses.
2:32 Not Martha being homophobic-
Also whoever played Fleming KILLED IT
EVERYONE IN THIS SHOW IS SO TALENTED SO IS THE ORCHESTRA
Martha wasn’t being homophobic, she had a crush on ram for 10+ years and so she was in denial that she was gay. I’m sure eventually she’ll realise that he is, indeed, gay gay homosexual gay.
i think she said that because she thought ram gave her that letter
@@Tessa839 I mean he wasn’t actually
@@KO_116 Tell that to everyone in the Heather's fandom
5:25 im so happy other people saw that cool little fact/easter egg!
4:56 it was at this moment she knew, SHE FUCKED UP
Someone might’ve already pointed this out but I will never get over how Veronica and Heather move completely in sync at 2:35 it’s such a good detail
SAMEEEE I LOVE THAT PART AND WHEN I SAW ANOTHER VERSION AT ONE POINT WHERE THEY DIDN’T DO THAT I NOTICED IT IMMEDIATELY AND WAS SO SAD
1:00 also veronica is the only one in there that is not wearing black, i think that means something (or not) but i can't really think of why
IM SORRY BUT THE WAY DAN SAID 'ALL IS FORGIVEN BABY' AT 8:02 IS JUST SO FUNNY LMAO
I love how the actors and the audience are having the same amount of fun with the performance
Se thats so sweet
9:45- FORGET THE SCREAM- JD'S FACE- I JUST NOTICED IT
the foreshadowing in heathers is so amazing istg its a masterpiece, it’s probably my favourite musical that originated from a movie
IT’S SO TRUE Martha isn’t there at all for shine a light because she runs off! I played Martha over the summer and it made me so sad thinking about it, but also my good friend played Fleming so I got to vibe backstage and watch them perform
the fact that i automatically said "oh she's screwed" at 6:19
Martha’s high note in Kindergarten Boyfriend legit gave me chills, I forgot how much I love this version of Heathers
8:05 my humor is so broken I laugh at this 😭
how is noone talking about the fact that Veronica and Heather synced their poses at 2:50 which shows that Veronica is getting more like Heather?! it's soooo good
Dead girl walking reprise honestly is the best song in the show like meant to be yours is a masterpiece and a close second but goddamit its so good
I can't get over the fact that Ram and Kurt are in their underwear the whole time they're dead. Just a bit of continuity that I'm here for.
dude this is perfect I just watched heathers off broadway and then saw this and this was just golden
"STEVE I'M ENDING OUR AFFAIR!"
*cast proceeds to stare intensely at a random audience member*
3:30 that's so darcc why did I laugh so hard lololol
I SWEAR I'VE FALLEN BACK TO HEATHERS MODE ALL OVER AGAIN AND I'M IN FOR IT😭✨
Join the club!
I've never even heard the full soundtrack but I litterly started to cry at the end when the 17 reprise came on
Same :')
Fun fact: For the movie they were gonna let JD blow up the school but they thought it was too dark so they gave it a happy ending! This movie and musical could’ve ended SO MUCH WORSE
A HAPPY ENDING??? BRO DIES
This is a joke btw
7:45 LITERAL CHILLS.
5:30 yeah they used tic tacks
One of my favorite parts is during Shine a Light when they all do the different poses, JD starts absolutely slaying the poses
6:07 why does this seen have me simping so much for JD(and Dan a lil :P)
I mean the whole musical does but especially here when he says “I love you!”
FRR
7:53 Jd jumpscare
3:41 WHY DID HE START JUST SHAKING THE LIGHTS (JD)
The trumpets really went off in this show and I love it so much
0:22 i think in the movie Veronica acts apathic of Ram and Kurt death 'cause she didn't know how to react, she burns herself with the cigarette shor after, to try feel something and JD just lights his cigarette in her burns, as she crawls up to him... i believe in the movie she goes into shock, while in the musical she is more reactive
THE EXPLOSION WHEN THE BOMB WENT OF WAS SO REALISTIC IT WAS JUST 🤌🏻
0:40 they got reawakened
2:48
notice how heather and veronica are in the same pose
after how veronica just treated martha, she essentially was being "that bitch."
That bitch being heather.
Oh my god I watched Heather's live when it came near my city so recently and Shine A Light WAS SO AMAZING Ms Fleming has a fantastic actor I can't even explain how good .also Dead Gay Son got such a huge amount of applause as it should LOL
3:51 that circle is giving cult
1:39 I SHOULDN'T HAVE LAUGHED 💀
I CAN’T 😭
