I love that the Russian violinist began to riff on "Let My People Go." The American was riffing on a Russian theme and the Russian was riffing on an American theme. Put in context of that era, this music dialogue is even more awesome. What a beautiful demonstration of bridging cultural divides.
The smile! When the violinist comes in and there is that moment of recognition. Dave Brubeck so eloquently moved from soloist to accompanist... The master giving the spotlight to the upcoming generation so effortlessly was so wholesome, so wonderful. My heart lifted to the sky!
I love how Brubeck is all smiles and encouraging the violinist on. Impromptu jam session at something that looks like it's in the context of a polite academic setting. Jazz and unplugged music forever!
“Yea yea go on” every musician that’s ever jammed and found that special place during a jam can identify with him at that moment. It’s an exhilarating feeling that never gets old
Fantastic. Kudos to the violinist for the chutzpah to take a chance and stand up... and amazement at how smoothly Dave responded, and how graciously he "conducted" the closing of the solo. Masterful!
Great to see a guy at top of his game at that age. Violinist was cool. It was amazing how dave spontaneously accompanied the russians solo.dave seem genuinely surprised. If that was authentic. Then bravo what a great demonstration of improv. I had the dvd and have been truly inspired by this for ten year. Both the russians and americans have long history of great music.
it's amazing how Brubeck can listen to this man play and influence the moment of the music at the same time. It's almost like he is conducting or guiding the violinist with his piano.
World peace through the love of music and respect for others. Lets do it!! Borders are manmade, they do not really exist. Health and happiness to all, Erik the Netherlands
Neither of them could communicate to each other verbally because of their different languages.... ..but in music they both understood each other perfectly well. I like that
Как они классно передают друг другу право на последнюю ноту - это, конечно, супер. И публика сходу это поприветствовала! Советская филармония это вам не российские концертные залы сегодня.
The one thing about music, as an art form, that differs from any other art form is the ability to collaborate with others. Painting, sculpture, drawing- you can't do this. If Picasso is painting, another great artist couldn't just pick up a brush and join in. But with music, you can. That's the beauty of it. Not only does another performer NOT ruin the music, but ADDS to it, making it richer, fuller, and ultimately, more beautiful.
That was mighty presumptuous of the young violinist, yet that quality is what it takes to play with the likes of a great like Dave Brubeck. What a show!
love this thanks for putting it up. i have been seeing dave brubeck since the 50s and will be seeing him again in november. i belelieve the sone is an old russian folk song The "Song of the Volga Boatmen" (Russian: Эй, ухнем!) is a well-known traditional Russian song
I just look back at his expression when he realized what exactly was happening. The look of pride and that huge grin. I'd like to think that that violinist changed what would be a routine performance to a pleasant surprise.
Ahhh....Good point! My thought was that it was Adrian Paul who portrayed Duncan MacLeod on the Highlander television series. Thanks for responding... and posting the clip. Dave Brubeck is a huge influence for this guitar player!
Major effin' goosebumps! Just goes to show that sometimes in life you have to be like Nike and "JUST DO IT". Loved the improv. It has a slight Gershwin-ish sound to it.
@divsac If you're talking about the crowd/applause shot, you are mistaken. It is clearly from the same camera angle, yes. However, note that in the opening shot there is a man in gray to the right of the woman in white (her right) and an empty seat to her left. In the ending shot, the seat to the eldertly woman's right is empty, and there is now a woman in red in the formerly empty chair to her left.
I believe that this is who the violinist is, Denis Kolobov. I copied a comment from below. A few years back, I also saw a comment from the violinist, but it seems to have disappeared. Ming Xu says that his name is @dacha76. Here is the copy: Em dezembro de 1997, o hoje famoso maestro e violonista russo Denis Kolobov era ainda um estudante no Conservatório de Moscou, ocasião em que Dave Brubeck visitava a instituição, dando palestras e concertos. It's as good 11 years in the future as when you first said it.
The smile! When the violinist comes in and there is that moment of recognition. Dave Brubeck so eloquently moved from soloist to accompanist... The master giving the spotlight to the upcoming generation so effortlessly was so wholesome, so wonderful. My heart lifted to the sky!
Yeah, a big smile. He's very happy

Music has no politics. . .. such love and understanding between them, instantly. Makes me happy.
You've apparently never had to fight for your seat in band
everything has politics.
Dave Brubeck is true gentleman.
Love how Mr Brubeck switched from lead to accompianiment, dialing it back so that the young man could shine with the lead.
Wow, what an experience to have; playing with Dave Brubeck. Brubeck was a class act.

What a gem... What musician wouldn't enjoy a good ol surprise jam like that?
That is so fantastic, I can't stop watching it!
Music, and the arts generally, have enormous power to bring peoples together.
it's amazing how Brubeck can listen to this man play and influence the moment of the music at the same time. It's almost like he is conducting or guiding the violinist with his piano.
This is one of the coolest things I've seen, ever.
World peace through the love of music and respect for others. Lets do it!! Borders are manmade, they do not really exist. Health and happiness to all, Erik the Netherlands
Wow ! The man had such class ... a real ' piece of work '. With such greatness comes humbleness : just love how he jams with the young violinist.
this is from a documentary called Brubeck Returns to Moscow, which can be found on Amazon
Neither of them could communicate to each other verbally because of their different languages....
..but in music they both understood each other perfectly well.
I like that
English lessons are compulsory in majority russian or soviet schools.
how wonderful is this !?!! in tears ❤
Как они классно передают друг другу право на последнюю ноту - это, конечно, супер. И публика сходу это поприветствовала! Советская филармония это вам не российские концертные залы сегодня.
In Soviet Russia, Audience Performs for you.

Made my day, and sure to bring a smile to most people's faces. Love it

Cannot comment, just brang me tears... Thank you so much, afahsu.
Amazing to watch a master at work. He is so many levels above your average "great" player that it brings tears to the eyes. Mostly of jealously.
Превосходно!!!

A great way to start a new year. Be moved by something everyday could be a good new years resolution.
Music is where we meet. Here it is, on display. Let's all make more music, please.

Fantastisch !!!!!!!!
What an EPIC moment !
how is it possible that there are 12 people who don't like this?
I have never commented on anything before - but this was truly awe-inspiring - would love to se what else the violinist has done
Визуальные образы соответствуют музыке. Удивительно!
the moment when mr. brubeck hears the violinist!!!
@divsac

@barelycertain it's certainly out of the ordinary which has lead to a great thing.
Amazing, thank you reddit
Sign him! Great performances by both artists. Thanks for posting, Ming Xu. "Liked" and "Pinned".
Скрипач божественен

It was very nice of Brubeck to respond to John Malkovich's request.
