  • The weather has been cold here, but with a slight warm-up, we decided to do an update on the cold frame system to see how the lettuce is doing and if it survives.

Hi, Luke. I reside in WA now, but grew up in Pontiac, MI. Back in the 60's, dad built a cold frame. In the 70's, he built a good-sized greenhouse. The greenhouse was not heated, so dad added a hotbed (and kept it active). Surprisingly enough, the hotbed was enough to keep the place warm. We got tomatoes in the dead of winter! Thank you so much for teaching your viewers about cold frames. Yes, they work!

I ❤️ how you put the camera INSIDE the cold frame! It really demonstrated WHY it’s important to wipe the snow off. 👏🏼👏🏼

Hi, there, i see how cold hardy lettuce truly is. I"m still learning. it's awesome. I think 30 degree nights is pretty cold for me, but I'm from Texas! I'm so ready for spring. See you soon. Bertha/ The Rustic Ranch Garden. I love your garden!

I've learned a ton this year. After I learned that I could grow greens in the fall and they could take some serious cold I planted some lettuce and spinach seeds I had left over.
Here in Eastern Iowa we had a cold rainy October then a cold November. I noted that they were fine down to 22F uncovered. The bunnies ate more of my spinach than I did. At this point the cold looked like it might last all winter so I found a couple of clear blue totes and covered them.
We were down to about 5F in November and they survived but then I learned that they will survive but they don't grow much. Finally in December the weather was mild and I decided to dig up some spinach and bring it in the house( I really miss spinach in my eggs on the weekends). My spinach is doing well and I expect to clip some in a few weeks( my computer room is very sunny and warm. I have seen no bugs from bringing soil in).
My lettuce after being uncovered for a few weeks didn't look too good. Now we are having sunny days in the 40s and high 40s and probably 50s tomorrow. Yesterday I noticed I have new leaves on my lettuce. It's growing again! After snow, sleet, freezing rain and ice it lives and grows! I'm 62 and wish I had found my love of gardening sooner. Yes they are Luke's seeds.

Cold frames are such useful items in the garden. They not only extend the growing season but they allow you to harden off plants in the spring. Fantastic video again Luke. Great update.

Great follow up Luke. I knew your greens would be ok. I love season extension solutions. I am experimenting with some frost protection in Arizona. It was under 30 Fahrenheit the other night. New to AZ so my techniques are very experimental (for me ). The threat of frost has passed here in AZ and I am happy to report my plants are ALIVE.😎😎😎

I've been growing lettuce under a homeade plastic low tunnel for the last 4 years in the winter, same state. My bigger problem is heat when it's really sunny/warmer as opposed to the cold. I like the design of your Cold frame it looks easier to deal with in my low tunnels.

We had sub-zero temperatures last winter. For a few days it was colder here than it was in Alaska. When the video switched to the interior shot of the cold frame while you were brushing the snow off of it I noticed there was daylight in the gaps between the boards. If it was my cold frame those gaps would be duct taped. BTW you can grow carrots in a cold frame too.

Perhaps some reflective insulation would be a good way to air seal the cold frame. I've seen others use it on the north wall of a green house/cold frame just for the reflective properties. The R value isn't as high as spray foam, but it is a little cleaner.

I have had spinach for 11 months out of the year before. Great luck also with the lettuces that are classified as best to grow in winter. Winter Marvel and red Rouge d' Hiver or however you spell it have been the best. Hardy winter greens also. All planted in the fall. Grown under small hoop areas on 4x8 raised beds. Three layers of plastic. Three layer are kind of hard to work with. Central IN.
    Your videos are fantastic Luke!

    How about an update?
I've just put a cold frame on to get some seedlings out (I'm running out of windowsills inside). Should I be warming it somehow or do I need to easy seedlings out? I'm living right across the bridge in Sanria, Ontario.
A more intense cold frame USAGE video would be nice so I can get the most out of my new frame :) Thanks so much! love your videos!

Happy new year. Thanks for the update. Cold frame is looking good. I am so getting the gardening itch. After Christmas and the new year, there's this feeling I need to get to work bit still have a couple months before I can even start thinking about seedlings. My wife would probably kill me if I filled her kitchen with trays of microgreens and grow lamps.

  • @NiaLin
    @NiaLin 5 років тому +1

I can’t use leaf mulch 😕. Our climate just makes the leaves rot on the plants & cause disease. Not to mention all the bad bug larvae that overwinter in it. It’s an incredibly smelly mess come February when we start getting 70 degree days. If we get the occasional week of freezing temps I just use fleece covers. Would be nice to be able to let the leaves do it! Once I get my compost bin I can @ least properly compost all the darn leaves we have to clean up!

Chemtrails don't exist. Those are natural exhaust from the plane, and at the Straz feel even if there was some sort of conspiracy to have chemical released into the populist, it's entirely too high for it to be any danger because it would have dissipated at that height. You would basically have to be being crop dusted every day for it to matter.

@@newenglandendler no, they don't. And evaporation exist. Chemtrails are not proven to exist, and like I said earlier, even if they did exist it be too high up in the stratosphere for it to even affect any one - they would literally be at crop-dusting height in order Ford have any effectiveness at all. And be completely irrational to have every plane to have them, and there'd be Pilots that would be telling people about it, and they are you really going to say that there is a conspiracy that all Pilots - every single one of them are in, content to blow chemicals All in the Family and loved ones? No. That's bullshit.
