  • Five vises geared toward the beginner or simply a budget-minded fly tier. Reviewed in this video: the Supreme, Crown, Maxcatch Rotary, Griffin's Odyssey Spider, and Colorado Angler's vise and kit.
    Savage Flies is a project with the mission of encouraging and teaching fly tying to as many people as possible. The channel is named after one of my western Maryland homewaters, the Savage River. I've been uploading at least three new videos a week (usually Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday).
    Thanks for stopping by. Please let me know in the comments if you have any tying tips you would like to share or if you have any patterns you would like to see tied here.

    Very nicely done Sir. Definitely enough good information to help a new tyer make an informed decision. This video makes me feel better about my choice of purchasing the Supreme Vice. Plus the fact that you gave these away. What a great gesture. Thank you for a great video.

    Thanks Matt! I have the Supreme vise and have used it for about 20+ years, great vise, tied from a #2 down to a #20 hook on it. Last month I upgraded to the Peak rotary vise, still finding my setup with it. Thanks for all the videos you make! Keep it up!

      Thanks Steve! When you get used to the Peak, I think you'll end up loving it. I went from a Supreme to a Peak, and after a month I was wondering how I ever tied on a non-rotary. :-)

      I appreciate it Kenneth! If you're just starting, you can't go wrong with the Supreme. For just over $20, the thing will last a pretty long time, definitely until you're ready to upgrade. And honestly, some people never need to upgrade. There are some good tiers out there who tied on one for decades. :-)

    Good Evening Sir Matt I loved this video, it takes me back to when I first started tying and wished their was a video to help me than. I love the one with the green and probably save up and get one. I use a spider cam with the clamp first then I purchased a pedestal for it and gotten used to it. Surplus part about that is its lifetime warranty on all parts that's probably why it's a little expensive with that good luck to all the new people I hope you win the vice cuz this is really really fun tying flies and thank you Matt for being a great teacher

      Edward, thank YOU my friend! Hopefully having a video out there like this will help some of the new folks who are just getting started. Additionally, reviews about hackle quality/ comparisons between Metz, Whiting, the Hoffman lines, etc. would be more than welcome. Now I did do one video that is a primer on hackle which might answer a few of your questions. I didn't compare every brand out there but I did talk about a few. Good review, I just upgraded about a month ago to the griffin. I've found that there is a point you can adjust the rotation tension that allows you to use the rotary function and still be able to keep it stable for fixed position tying, granted it took a lot of trial and error to find that adjustment point. Overall I'm quite happy with it.

    For a few bucks more I bought the cam version of the Griffen you reviewed. The Griffin Odyssey Spider Cam Vise, is my first and only vise so far. I’ve been tying on it for five years and it has tied tons of flies from 22’s down to 1’s. Fresh to salt. It’s a fantastic beginner vise. You were spot on in how you adjusted the tension to have rotary function yet still enough of a hold to tie normal. It’s how mine is setup and I haven’t adjusted it again for five years. Excellent review and awesome channel.
    Don’t enter me into the #vise drawing. I’ve already got a cheap vice. Allow someone in need the chance.

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  3 роки тому +1

      @@jhorkey That's a great question Joe, and one that might be worth making a video of. You've given me something to think about! But in short, I would think the two most important tools not to skimp on are scissors and bobbin holder. I probably buy two good pairs of scissors a year, and by good, I'm talking $20-25 Dr. Slick. Keep in mind that someone who ties a couple times a week might be able to make a good pair of scissors last a couple years. But if you're like me and tie pretty much every day, and don't take good care of scissors (I cut anything with them), then they don't last as long as they could. :-)
      Next thing I wouldn't want to tie without is a good ceramic tube bobbin holder. You can't go wrong with the Rite bobbins. I've got three or four and they have lasted me several years. There's nothing more frustrating than shredding or breaking your thread because of a microscopic nick in a steel tube bobbin.
      As far as a vise goes, I really LIKE tying with a nice Regal, but honestly it doesn't make my flies any better. It just makes it more fun to tie. So investing in a high-end vise isn't as important as the basic tools. Just my two cents.
      Thanks again for the idea, and welcome to the channel! I'm glad you're here. -Matt

    thank you for this...I decades ago lost track of the tying kit with vice & base I had as a teenager. I'm going to start tying my own bucktails but don't want to invest in a "better" vice just yet. I won't be tying flies at all, ok at least that's my plan at this microsecond. ;)
    I will be using 3/0 to 8/0 jig headed hooks or, easier, jig blanks in the 1/8 to 3oz range, maybe even 4oz. If I add a base for $18 (current cost on Amazon) that makes a $50ish range vice so I might up my budget a small bit and look into that range though from looking at Crown at ~$24 and just use the screw down base clamp on a wood TV tray.
