In 1986 I’m 14 years old in Detroit. I’m about to clean my room and turn on the radio for some music. Hip Hop was Krush Groove then which was cool but it hadn’t yet become the soundtrack of my life. I flip on the radio and I hear a beat but missed the first verse. I hear the first 4 bars of the second verse and immediately push record never mind what I’m taping over because what I’m hearing is life altering. “No tricks in 86 it’s time to build, Eric B easy on the cut no mistakes allowed cause to me Mc means move the crowd!” No one did it like that before. Rakim literally invented flow!! His verses stand up today. How can he not be the GOAT?!?

Rakim is simply the greatest of all time, he changed the way MCs rock the mic, his flow is insane and I have seen him live and he sounds like you're playing his music on your stereo, we have to give him his flowers while he's alive y'all

@jjw00dw. that’s your opinion and I respect it because KRS is another legend, however, the way Rakim impacted mcing is something nobody else has ever done and probably nobody will

Incorrect, it's not that he never cursed, it's that Rakim RARELY cursed in his songs. There are some exceptions where he did curse ("My Melody", Let "The Rhythm Hit Em", "New York (Ya Out There)", many songs from his album THE MASTER). It's just that his rhymes are so fire that with or without cursing that they send chills down the spine.

The line I recall the most was Rah and Eric B joint My Medody: I take seven emcees put 'em in a line
And add seven more brothers who think they can rhyme
Well, it'll take seven more before I go for mine
Now that's twenty-one emcees ate up at the same time! WOW

Rakim invented a whole different style he basically rearranged the way M.C.s wrote and delivered their rhymes with the rhyme within a rhyme format. Not one rapper was spittin like Rakim before Rakim but, a lot of them were after Rakim appeared on the scene. There's only one Godfather of Hip-hop.
