A retrospective analysis ('hindsight is 20/20'): You whiffed on Mage and Disarm. Got Two Phil's, Angel of Empire, and Hit Show right. I'd call Kingsbarns and Verifying - who dueled on a too sharp early pace and couldn't sustain - a wash. Derma Sotogake, another wash, broke sideways but still managed to make a move going into the far turn before getting dusted by Mage there. Mage was ridden and ran super impressively - saving ground early toward the back of the pack, making steady progress up the back stretch going into the far turn, then going wide there and exploding out of it to take the lead coming for home past a game Two Phil's, who had been able to save ground while pressing the pace all the way. Great race by both those horses taking completely different tacs. Hit Show and Disarm ran well too filling out the super high five. Angel of Empire did his usual thing finishing strongest of all. I'll be interested in seeing the fractions and final speed figures for the top three especially.
It's surprising how being wide on both Oaks and Derby day was not a big problem at all. A large number of those who won stakes on the dirt ran that way. Pretty Mischievous, General Jim, Cody's Wish, Mage - all of them wide, and challenged in at least the 4 path down the stretch. Maybe the inside three paths were deeper than usual.
I felt Derma was a big overlay as well as the most likely winner. Had he been a U.S. horse with more data, he would have been half the odds or lower. Didn't flash any early speed. Didn't fire. The UAE curse lives on apparently. At least for the ones coming off a win with a forward move.
Oops, it didn't sound like this system liked Two Phils that much. DOH!!!
