Do you thing that replacing the 8 for 16 GB will make a huge difference in term of performance ? Sometimes my machine is struggling with some new software. I guess it should be also good to compare how much time it takes to load the new applications such as MS office after RAM upgrade from 4GB to 16GB. the SSD is going to make a HUGE difference. the SSD is going to make all your programs load super fast. the extra memory is going to help with multitasking, having multiple tabs open, etc.

Hello, when replacing the HDD with SSD I assume you backup (time machine) to external drive your MBP. when then do you recopy the files to your new SSD. I assume after you reboot from the USB stick. Also I am currently on Sierra. At what stage do i switch to High Sierra? (is it after upgrading the SSD and the 16 GB memory). I have a MBP late 2011. Thanks!

I have also created a usb flash with OS High Sierra but before i go ahead and Fresh Install to upgrade from Sierra I wanted to be sure: 1) the MBP seems to be heating up a bit more now, after the above upgrades. Any tips or is this a side effect of the larger RAM? 2) would High Sierra produce even more heat? 3) I have not yet enabled TRIM, (neither am I running APFS as I am still on Sierra) can any of these have any positive effect on the amount of heat generated you think ? the Tips I read suggest: replacing the HD cable, replacing Flash with HTML 5 for video viewing on UA-cam, and of course keeping the laptop on a flat surface etc. Thanks for your help!

I know some places say that the connection ports can be burnt out which would ofcourse be a hard ware issue . The file size of high Sierra you’ve shown in your upload is 5.88GB. When I followed the exact same process of downloading this, it is only downloading as 1.88GB. The portable range of Apple products has the most variety, and the older MacBooks should be easier to upgrade. Some of the newer ones may not be upgradeable at all, but could still benefit from a cleaning.
I am - late 2011, 15" 2.2GHz Intel Core i7 (quad core). Just went from 8GB ram to 16GB @1600MHz. It was recognized and worked immediately. It's been just over a week now. I am not impressed in any way, as my computer is still hanging on even HD 1080 60fps videos. At times the entire MBP is sluggish, with the fan going haywire. Late last year I upgraded to 500GB SSD. That definitely improved the speed. I have no idea why the multi-tasking, even moderately brings things to a crawl. Drives me crazy. Very frustrating. All that being mentioned, I do not know for sure if that RAM upgrade is the source of my problem/issues. By the way, I'm still using El Capitan, with no plan of changing that, as I don't want to deal with my software not functioning properly, or being upgradable only "in the cloud". I hope that info helps you. =)

Sometimes Apple seems to underreport the max amount of RAM, for this model 16GB works perfectly fine, as shown in the video!

Maybe try monitoring your systems resource use with an app like ➜ bjango.com/mac/istatmenus/
If the memory is full a lot you will see it there, but if it is not utilised a lot then maybe not so useful to upgrade.
Also if you are a heavy user SSD can get old, it happened to me once, because I forgot to enable TRIM support, so SSD can age more quickly.
Run blackmagic disk speed test to see if speed is still good.
The Geekbench compute scores could be interesting since the iGPU has more available memory.

First upgrade the memory, then second take out the old HDD and replace with the new empty SSD.
You can then do a fresh install of High Sierra using the USB Stick method ➜ support.apple.com/en-us/HT201372

1. upgrade the memory
2. take out old HHD put in new empty SSD
3. install macOS High Sierra
Please use only APFS filesystem, when formatting it is selected automatically for SSD.

The bottleneck will still be the graphics card, also keep in mind that High Sierra will stop receiving updates at some point.
