Skari i genuinely admire you and your ability to communicate. I was super stoked to see you stepping into old world games. This video reminds me of a RTT I was in for 40K a few months back, I was playing against Someone who was playing space wolves and he was being really loose with his measurements and was speed playing so fast I had to ask him to slow down, and explain his rules, or just have him actually measure out his moves on multiple occasions. He lost his temper turn 2 when he was insisting he didn’t have to connect with both units he targeted with a multi charge. I had said I wanted to get a judge a couple times before, and each time he got angry and was like No! We don’t need a judge!
Anyway he conceded while the judge was there, and then changed his mind but refused to keep playing. The kicker was we were n turn 1.5, and he was already beginning to lose he game. The judge called it right there in round 1.5, gave me points for whatever I was standing in and the other guy got the win AFTER conceding and reversing himself, then refusing g to keep playing. I am still super sour about the way the judge handled it. I make a lot of good connections at tournies and have a good time with almost all my opponents but this game still kinda sticks in my craw. Anyway you are a class act, and I thank you for sharing your story. Please keep the old world content coming!

We can't take for granted how far we've come in the AoS and 40k communities. Thanks for this report! We'll have some work to do to learn how to play with strangers in tOW too. But thanks for emphasizing that it can be done and that the good far outweighs the bad!
One thing I'd quibble with is that this is "just toy soldiers." Its also true that golf is "just hitting a ball w a stick" and that soccer is a "child's game" and that basically all games are essentially meaningless abstractions.
However we DO take them seriously. And that is part of the fun. And taking something seriously does not mean we have to be dicks about it. Taking something seriously means giving it the respect it deserves for the time and effort we as a community put into it. That can be painting, collecting, playing or all of the above. The key isn't not taking it seriously because it's just toy soldiers, the key is giving your opponent respect and playing in a way that is collaborative and positive for both sides.

Looks like we found one of the people who cause problems.
Part of respecting your opponent is realizing it IS toys, and that a human is on the other side of said toys. Your respect for your fellow man cannot outweigh, or even equal, your nerdy passion for your minis. This coming from a huge nerd who is very passionate himself.

Maybe it would be an idea to share examples of what your opponent did/give general examples of what's unacceptable behavior and what's okay. I think a lot of people struggle with knowing where to draw the line, both in how to act themselves and in what to expect/put up with in competitive gaming. Where is the line between gotchas and outplayed, for example.

I actually had an experience at a tournament with a guy in the second (of four) rounds. Back in 7th Ed 40k (when Chaos were pretty gnarly in close combat) the guy lost his composure when my defiler survived two land raiders and a devastator squad unloading into it. It then proceeded to get a lucky scatter on the defiler cannon and wrecked both Landraiders (both rolling 6s for the penetration rolls AND 6s for the damage results… I have never gotten that lucky since) every defiler cannon shot afterwards he argued the scatter roll saying I wasn’t moving the blast in the direction indicated. It got to the point where a judge had to watch us. He even told the judge I was using weighted dice. Which the judges tested and concluded I wasn’t… but he still kept arguing almost every die roll after wards. He proceeded to be pretty toxic in both rounds afterwards, not that the tournament organisers actually did much about him. I was the only guy he lost to in the tournament too, but I think that was more to do with his opponents not speaking up as much as I did.

Yeah agreed, for all we know he just walked off and ruined a fun game for someone. Or maybe he lacks self awareness and was actually being passive aggressive or made a personal comment that hurt the dude's feelings, so he was being understandably frosty, or just decided to flake with no indication or warning without being willing to talk things through.

Yeah, without the details, this is kind of a nothing-burger. You don't have to name the player, but it's important to know the whole story here, or at least specific details about what was done that was unsportsmanlike.

    • @SkaredCast
      @SkaredCast  4 місяці тому +119

I did not want to really go into too much detail. It’s not really worth the extra time and effort , but I don’t mind explaining here for you since you asked.
It was a build up of 2-3 things that then culminated in dynamic that made me feel shitty and crossed a line so I I chose to end the game.
      - early in the game he adamantly stated that I was playing how to hit wrong (bringing up old ws on ws chart rules) , did not seem to like when I looked it up and showed him that I had been playing it right.
      - I had a wind blast do a mega hit into a small unit of guys with full plate and some sorta gun, he failed all his saves (would have killed the unit) rolled for wards and passed 2 of them. Next turn, the same unit runs into a vortex , and one more does , we realize that the ward they get is only from fire, I remind him about the wards he made before and became quite rude saying he had not.
And then, to top it all off he accused me of vanguarding my tomb scorpion too far before the game even started , and that this had allowed my scorpion to make a charge that he said was not possible - the problem here was a) I had not even moved the scorpion the full vanguard move , and B) when I rolled the charge, he had been the one that measured my model and even moved it before I had a chance to measure myself …
So? At that point I was aware that my opponent did not seem to want to have an amicable game (once he tried to flip it into me) and I called the judge over and conceded the game. I don’t have time for petty bickering.

I read what happened with the not fun game in your reply to someone else in the comments.
I think you made the right decision not going in to details in the video, and instead talking about the positives of the day and reminding people that sportsmanship is important ^^
The main thing this reminds me of is back in the days of WHFB my two favourite armies were Tomb Kings and High Elves.
I never ran either of them optimized and just used the units I liked (Skeleton Heavy Horsemen for example).
The two main things I remember from back then are:
Tomb Kings: had a guy using mass Nurgle Chaos Warriors (festus, the whole shibang), I had killed like 4 chaos warriors total and lost almost my entire army.. My last few skeletons on their way out killed his beefed up super Chaos Lord, before crumbling to combat resolution and thus I was tabled. You would think the guy had the worst game of his life, carrying on about it being bullshit and it shouldn't happen.. I said to him "seriously? you tabled me and only lost like 5 models, and now you are ruining the tiny funny victory I had as I lost?".
High Elves: spent almost every game listening to opponents complain about 'always strike first' as I struck them first and kill a few models, and then the strike back kills half my unit of very points intense Elves lol.

The last opponent in my last fantasy tournament felt so bad his comet took out most of my Wood Elf tree army. We both knew the game was over after that but I stuck it out. Neither of us was being a bad sport or anything but that’s a memory that will stick with me. Poor wood elves with their bad ward that couldn’t be used against magic dying to a comet from the sky.

The single most important thing in life is respect. The moment you start respecting people around you, you will see that their attitudes will change and become friendlier in most cases. Its a shame that some people don't abide by this principle because it makes life so much easier and pleasant. There is this thing with sports and competitions in general where some opponents will try to destabilize you. I don't know if you have seen the movie "Hustle" because I think it tackles this subject beautifully. Anyway, I know that everything is relative and if you're just trying to have a fun day and not being competitive, I support your decision to stand up to your principles and walk away. Respect, stay like you are we love you Skari.

I remember playing in a WFB tournament back in 6th and some guy I was playing was rolling extra dice and then picking up misses. I warned him once that I saw what he was doing. He continued and I pointed at him and said stop cheating you are a cheater. The organizer came over and spoke to us and ended up giving him a yellow card. But his 1st opponent then came other to me and said he did the same thing to him, but he just didn't say anything. Most people avoid challenging situations and turn a blind eye, until someone speaks up. WFB tournaments had a reputation back in the day for being unfriendly, lets not allow that to happen again.

I jokingly used to say that the WAAC Magic players coming into 40k and WHFB really changed the "feel" of tournaments, which shifted from fairly "balanced" lists to optimized lists. As you said, it's a game with toy soldiers. It should be fun. It can be hard to have fun, sometimes, if your opponent isn't even engaging in a friendly manner, regardless of how the game goes. Some of my favorite games ever were total losses on my part, because the opponent was fun and we could laugh about the silliness of the dice.
That said, I really do hope there are more narrative events for The Old World, as my pain threshold for people having the "gotta win, need to win, must win" attitudes has decreased. I'm here to throw dice, have fun with others, and come back with crazy stories about how things went.

    great speech, man.
I played underworlds some time ago, and 2 games were cool and fun, simple rules helped a lot. 3-rd and 4-th games were another experiance, opponents just had rosters, that i could kill in only one way or lose, and when i managed to pull the games(2:1) and (1:2), they became angry and upset, even if i lose. They talked a lot about my tactics and unbalance, but when their models just go kill mine without a chance, it was alright. i felt like its not fair, when one goblin killed 3/4 of my team with 1 attack, but sad nowithing and tried to play better, but my opponents were almost crying after every lost wound. It was meh.
But i managed to stomp one toxic player and many people were having fun)

This is one of my main worries about TOW. We’ve had a great 8th (and 6th) scene (including tournaments) continuously since GW blew up the old world but pretty much all the waac players moved on to other supported games. The returning influx of players is great but it does mean that some of those players will be likely be dusting off their toys and also returning.
Great advice though as reporting them early will make other opponents days much better.

Sorry for the last game Skari! Hope that the rest of the day was more enjoyable to forget that annoying moment.
Just to share, months ago I had similar episodes, always with the same person, who also turned a bit against me the local store guy. 1st time, in a just for play event at 1000 points of 40k, it's the first match of three. Mr X and me are newbies of the 10thsystem, he start to talk a lot and beeing super slow with deployment (also we were using combat patrol size field). I chat, but I ask if we please can hurry, because all other tables where at start of 2round. At my first turn of shooting with drukhari. After a shoot from the kabs in the raider, he starts basically mantra repeating "yeah but when it's my turn? they shoot too much!I didn't even played yet" again and again. Initially I am empathic and explain, i know, now druks are a shooting army, i am at full units now etc, then i loose it after the 6th time he repeated it. I stop the game (at second turn)and say, ok you win, good next game, and leave the table. He is all "nono i didn't want make drama, i'm sorry ecc ecc" I say no problem and keep with the day. Couple months after, I get sorted against Mr X at a game of kill team campaign. We both are tense, I had to explain him the rules for retainde dice on cover and he didn't trust me or understand words from the manual, He is loosing the team but on the point we are at a tie in the 3rd turn. So he say "well i'm retiring so I protect the remaining operatives from injuries" Ok, so I start counting the points to give to the store guy. But Mr x says "But if I retire you can't do anymore points"
I say, well, I dont' think it works that way, and get supported from the players around. So then a day after, the local store guy come to me and say "ohi Mr X said to me you didn't allow him to retire. Don't be a jerk, ok?"
I was so thrown off that I hadn't the reflexes to stand up, as the guy goes to some clients. Now every time I see mr X in the store, we basically throw each other semideath stares. Things like that basically brings my enjoyment of the game and community to 0.
Luckily i've found other guys/gals who are a pleasure to play with!

I had this happen back in 6th just after the riptide model dropped.
Was a 500 pt tournament. 2 qualifier rounds then three rounds in your bracket.
I played Dark Eldar and won my first qualifier and lost my second to a guy who... I cannot describe how full of himself... How miserable a time I had playing against him.
Thought I was clear of him until I ended up playing for first in my bracket... Against him.
I just pushed models and rolled dice and just generally didn't give a damn about the game. Took second but it definitely soured my day.

props for admitting to something you struggle with... especially in an online space. Also, fair play for apologizing and conceding when you feel it's the right thing to do. My food for thought, however, is are you working on creating a positive change for yourself which will carry over into your interactions? Being "socially awkward" and having an anger problem might overlap but are definitely two different things. If I was playing someone for the first time I'd much rather get the "socially awkward" disclaimer at the beginning of a game than the anger disclaimer. And I think in this wargaming space, socially awkward is probably a little expected. Anyways bro, good luck!

With rules that are able to use mixed weaponry, unbreakable, able to shoot into combat, lead from the back so your leaders can’t be challenged, and tons of other wonky rules that no one else has made every game into my opponents being angry about one rule or another, or they would call judges who would confirm the rules in my favor and no one seemed to have fun. Then I found the Dark Eldar, and sold that Skaven army. I’m glad I did, because face planting was a lot less fun compared with 40K.

Plague of rust is obviously huge and earthern ramparts & mystic pathways are very nice for the bricks, but the LD stuff just seems too strong to pass up on in any lists with terror, catapults and caskets. Even just a lot of archers can cause panic. In the undead match ups you can still shut down the healing, will be done, necrotect reroll, etc... even if it doesn't break them.

I remember back in 4th edition 40k. I was playing the broken Iron warrior list with 9 obliterators /basilisk/vindicator,deamon prince with wings combo. And someone mentioned there was a upcoming doubles tournament coming up. So I thought it would be fun to ask my mates dad,Mike (who is the nicest guy in the world, never says anything negative) who also played iron warriors to team up and annihilate the competition with 18 obliterators😅. After 3 easy wins we was put up against these two students that are known to be somewhat try hards and rules benders. They were trying to exploit the height rules on units, basically trying to say they could shoot us but we cant shoot them back.(Which has never been a rule in warhammer)Anyways we ended up tableing their asses, but i remember after the game Mike the nicest guy in the world ,turned to them and said "You two are the most fucking scaley(south african slang saying they are reptilian) people i have ever played against", 🤣 The moral of the story is there will always be those people at tournaments best thing to do is grin and bare it ,table their asses then tell them what you think about them after.👌

Find his other opponents and confirm your experience. If he indeed is that way towards others, you should send a formal complaint to the tournament managers and try to have him "handled" (whether it's a warning or outright ban is up to them). That's the only way to handle douchebags to prevent other players from having a truly bad tourney experience.

(my opponent was a champ about the insanity of it) - The Next game i was probably being a little too exited as i was rolling a higher then average amount of 6's (yes i was hands in the air - joy bombing all the good rolls) and my new opponent called the judge in... which was totally fair and i had a giggle about it... which i dont think he took well... until the judge came up... explained who i was (everyone had apparently been talking about the epic deathstar fail) and my opponent laughed and we had an excellent game after that with him spending alot of time asking how i managed to fail sooo badly the first round. I dont remember the outcome of that game though i think he might have got me in the end but i do remember that match as the best game i ever had in 8th. Sometimes context is very important and calling a judge over is as important for games rulings as it is to ease your mind about issues in the social contract.

As there ARE arseholes out there. or people that need a bit of a wake-up call about how they behave. And that the game is a social thing. Winning at all costs is not what it should be about either. Do that in computer games or something. Act nicely in this one..
I´ve got ALOT of shit about that recently online. Especially when I point out that you CAN tell people - or call them out really, when they are like this.. but there are too many.. Cowards in gaming.. Sad but true,. That is also one reason it is as common as it is..

The TOs really made a scenario with reserves... ridiculous... most stupid rule you could add into a slow paced RnF game, entire army roster destroying as well. No need to even go there and play with a dwarf army.... no wonder he was pissed.
"Oh I just wanted to have fun with my dragon." is in my opinion also a very big problem that comes up now with ToW... everyone playing these uber dragons is like "oh I just want to have fun" while everyone playing without dragons will suffer against those dragon rosters most of the time, thus having not much fun.
So maybe this guy has met 3 armies with 3 dragons in 3 games and of course he will be pissed due to this experience. Where is the empathy towards this? Why hiding behind "oh I just wanted to have fun with my dragon." because playing against dragons is one the most annoying things that ToW offers... and no, GW did not made it really cool with dragons... they made dragons totally uber and an annoyance to play against because GW wants to sell tons of cowboy models on big mounts... it is always easy to look down to people who show their emotions openly and call them toxic by the way. In my opinion it is more toxic to simply play the game by its bad rules (and list writing possibilities) and lay back and say "I just wanted to have fun".
And just to mention, dwarfs are very bad against those uber dragons even thou having artillery. Good look shooting dragons with D3 wound dealing cannons who do not even ignore their armor save because they only have AP2 (good luck with armorbane2 with single to wound rolls lol) and the dragon will of course not run into that toughness 10 king and will get stuck there... or the D6 wounds dealing damage who still has problems penetrating all the armor and saves of these uber models.
The game is simply very bad balanced and some elements in the game, like dragons, are super fun-destroying and it seems a lot of fanboys simply ignore this and play their dragons, giving a shit about what their opponents could feel because they just "want to have fun with their dragon"... yeah nice... good for YOU... but there still belong 2 people minimum for playing this game and playing your uber dragons literaly means "I give a shit about my opponent" in this game... so well, no wonder he was pissed probably.
It is like saying "oh I just wanted to have fun with my 5 imperial knights" when facing oldschool style normal 40k rosters, stomping and shooting them into the ground ith them having no chance at all against these uber models... there once was a reason these models were "apocalypse only" but sadly the greed from GW is endless and so they pressed these models into the normal 40k game and thus also broke its power spiral... maybe they are fine in 10th edition of 40k, who cares, but they were not ok in all the editions before with 8th I guess making it the worst with that 4-5 imperial knights + 32 screening imperial guard infantry + 3 Blood angel jump pack thunder hammer captain rosters... probably the most ugly thing I ever saw being able to be played in 40k and being played on average on tournaments quite some time...
But well, as an old tournament and even 40k ETC player I also have to admit and can say that yes the entire tabletop scene got more and more toxic. A lof of this has to do with the focus on ETC that almost the entire tournament scenes in several games have put into. But the power spiral, the power gaming possibilities that GW more and more pushed into 40k for instance also has something to do with that because people simply take power gaming more and more as common, not even seeing how toxic it is. And that is where "I just wanted to have fun with my dragon." in my opinion sadly also falls into, it is part of the problem and not just a sentence to point out how fun and nice you are.
I mean I stopped playing tabletop 13 years ago because of this toxicness and uber-pseudo-competitiveness that even had its grip not only on the tournament scene but also on the beer&bretzel scene... disgusting! Being a dick on tables was more and more common and even got introduced to the people via blogs, youtube channels or such stuff as "competitive gaming skills" - again, just disgusting.

such a shame between the grognards who have never played the game the dudes who havent bought anything for 30 years complaining from announcement to release, whos hobby is no longer the hobby but complaining about the hobby and now the game is out we have people being dicks in the game its like the oldguard are trying to bury the game.... baffles me. Sorry you travelled for fun only to play against someone who values being a dick above the organisers and participants efforts. Sounds like we need a strike system then tourney bans via west cost pairings events like the other game systems.

Huh, so fantasy was filled with hyper competitive idiots and now they are back for old world? strange because it's such an unbalanced mess of a game, or maybe that's the appeal.....

It's fascinating cuz where I'm from Fantasy never was the competitive game back in the days due to It's unpredictability and flavour over balance mind set. 40k on the other hand was (and still is) the WAAC game.
