THE SONG -
This project of recording a Rabindrasangeet in Hindi was given to me some thirteen years back by an erudite and brilliant Bengali connoisseur of the arts, living in the US. Dr Biplab Pal wanted to do this experiment and see what the thing may sound like. I myself was not very confident about the outcome, because honestly I did not like much of what "Hindi Rabindrasangeet" was then available in the market.
Personally I felt, it belonged neither here nor there ! It did not sound like a Rabindrasangeet, neither did it sound like a modern Hindi song and of course the lyrics completely failed to convey even a fraction of what the original Bengali does.
Translating songs of that class is perhaps an impossible experiment to even attempt !
Much of that remains the same here in this song as well. The lyrics had been translated by Smt Jalaja Bhaduri , who I understand was the leading personality for translating Rabindrasangeet and had many commercially successful albums to her credit.
What I changed in my performance after a lot of discussions with my Gurus and seniors, is the singing style, which I felt needed to be more ornate than the traditional style of singing Rabindrasangeet in keeping with the difference in the character of the language.
There is not enough space here to justify the whole of my argument, but will appreciate constructive critical comments by cerebral and unbiased listeners. Hope you like what you hear and at the end of the day that would justify all in itself !
