Great video as always. Really comprehensive look at the right gear and gadgets to look at. The belt is my number one piece of kit. Absolute game changer when I got one of those. Also believe that showing up to Parkrun each week is the best thing a new runner can do. There’s no barrier to entry and after a few weeks you’ll find your group that you “race” against to get better.
Loved this video! It's time to buy new books for a mental boost. I'll check those out! And I love Flora Beverly, she's one of the first UA-cam channels I subscribed to. She's a plant based runner currently training for an ultra, but she's done marathons, adventure races, boxing matches, and cycling challenges. She's super motivating, and promotes sustainable living without shoving it down your throat.
Brilliant video Ben - watching you with all these products was like that gameshow Sale of the Century! Couldn't agree more with your comment about how beneficial it is joining a running club - easily one of the best things I done and also how I met my wife too!
Great tips! For a headtorch I 100% recommend getting something powerful. It makes a HUGE difference to night runs. I find the Petzl Actik Core fantastic and leaps ahead of the Tikkina
The book "the incomplete book of running" by Peter Sagal is one of my favorite things. To be fair, Peter Sagal is a really special person to me and I really value his input and opinions. Funny, insightful, gripping, and holy hell, inspirational.
I really recommend a metronome. My cadence was really bad, 150-160 for a rather tall runner, it caused quite a lot of small injuries. I started using a metronome and slowly upped the beats per minute until I reached my goal. I never run without it, even during ultra's when cadence isn't always controllable it helps to refocus and get back into correct form.
Besides the obvious gear, what I like to have always around, for hotter days and runs above 45 minutes or so, is just a flask, that I carry with in my hand - no belts. Hydration, hydration, hydration! Nice video idea Ben, more stuff like this would be a really nice to have.
Fantastic Video Ben, loads of great tips! I sometimes use an unopened 2L bottle of lemonade (20p from the supermarket) as a "foam" roller. It's surprisingly effective & dual purpose too. 🤣
Great idea for a video, and super helpful suggestions. My tip to help with running all year round; is to get some gloves for the winter. The pair I have got aren't the greatest, so I wouldn't recommend them 😀 but I need a pair as my fingers get so cold, and that just makes me miserable!
Your videos are brilliant! Your video on how to run a faster 5k helped me get my best 5k time, was wondering if you might be able to do a video on what you do the day before and the day after a race, I would find that really interesting as I'm not sure if I'm doing to much or to little🤔😊
The first thing I've spend money to improve my speed was a comfortable pair of shoes that I can run lots of kilometers in one session without having blisters or pinchpoints. Nothing fancy, actually the cheapest option that the Decathlon store had. And the second thing is my Casio STL S300. I bought it used for 10 quid. Just so I can see my lap times and if I'm on or off pace. Everything else that I use is something that I already had before starting running or I made a DIY version of it. Shoes and the watch in combination with tips from running youtubers are the 3 things that contributed the most for my speed.
Hello Ben thanks for your tips! In addition, I tried OH1 Polar heart rate sensor which can be held on shoulder. That's amazing thing because it is really precise as chest HRS and more convenient. Usually I forgot about it during the running session) It costs only about 80$
One of the best vids you’ve made Ben. I think you’ve mentioned at least one or two things that are beneficial to any runner wherever they are in terms of ability. 👍🏻👍🏻 See you at Ldn21 😎
Fantastic video, Ben! Always enjoy your content. (I can only dream of running at this point due to working through chronic flare ups and niggles, but while I’m waiting to be able to lace up again some of these book recommendations will hold me over.)
@@BenParkes I’m honored that you took the time to respond to my comment. That’s an unexpected boost to my day! Back stronger is a good perspective to adopt, thanks for that. Glad to see that you’re indeed back stronger and are doing what you love. Wishing you and Sarah a lovely weekend.
Great video, so much more than just the shoes, having spent several sessions with Shane Benzie and improving my running form, I now run injury free, more efficiently with much more running enjoyment, Shane’s book ‘The Lost Art of Running’ is a very good read….
Your t shirt in that particular colour is the best ever !!!How many of them you can get equal to the price of the Nice's- what's the right question.love you!!!
Great idea for a video and massive kudos to you for putting it out as well. Top man Ben !!! For me resistance band and a rubber dog ball and Scaps have been my best investments the dog ball is perfect for rolling on the hip and into my shoulder blades and underneath my arch of my foot. £2 that cost me
If metronomes drive you mad, I recommend 180bpm playlists on Spotify. Either listen as you run, or just play your favourite songs from the playlists in your head as you run. Most are 90bpm upbeat rock, as obviously 180bpm music is pretty rare!
The most important thing for me are the Nike Alphafly Next % and Adidas Adios Pro 2 shoes, I’ve just had multi level ACDF C5-C7 spinal fusion and having the absolute best, expense no worries as I need the most Cush and responsive shoes I can find. I tried the NB RC Elite 2 and Endorphin Pro 2 but those didn’t make the cut for me, not a super shoe in my experience. Resistance bands are the BEST!!, and now for winter some nice tights, base layers.I only run with my phone, maybe a watch in the near future as my phone will die quickly. But the biggest is my will to get out and run, heal, enjoy all these blessings God has given me. Thank for all your great content, Cheers…🙏
Oh, a side note…I just started running 4 weeks ago and my second test hit in the Alphafly’s my time in the 5K dropped about 3 minutes, I’ll have to check the exact but that is huge and I’m just learning them as they are quite different, they MAKE you run faster and teach you to land on your forefoot, no mid or heel here, lol…amazing technology and so blessed they have given me new life after surgery.
Hi Ben. I agree about the free weekly park runs but we must also volunteer to help at our local event once in a while 😃 - standing back and watching is a good way of learning too 😀
Nice tips Ben ! what do you think about the Nike Vomero series? it does not seem to be very popular but I really like them . I feel Vomero 10 (or 9) was pretty good , not sure about the current version.
Gloves are handy in winter, nothing worse then cold hands. I personally like Feeture socks and they work well for me! Can you also make a book list on Instagram please. Make a story and save them as highlights :)
Fantastic video. Really enjoyed this one. Would love for you to do a video on heart rate on watch vs heart rate monitor as I’m unclear on why a watch heart rate would be so inaccurate and useless. Why would they include it on the watch?
Hi Ben, great video as ever. Super useful advice. I have a question about the socks, I tend to get blisters with some makes of running socks, do you ever have any issues with the Stance ones you wear?
Best thing I found to help my running is making sure I warm up and cool down properly. Bought a orb ball for rolling. That and learning what a Piriformos was. Kept getting calf problems and didn’t know why until I had a sport massage and realised my buttbcheeks were the problem. 😂😂
That one about rolling your Fascia(TFL) is a really controversial one ... Most people won't advise to massage or roll any "fascia" in the body. But you should roll fascia-connected tissues
I did in fact use your affiliate link to try to buy a flip belt and found a lot of reviews on the page complaining it is a counterfeit product. I’m not sure if that’s the case but you may want to double check those links
Unless you're in realm of -3h marathon I think the alphaflys are a waste of money, so I'd spend those precious 260€ on stuff to help me get to that form and then buy the alphaflys or probably another shoe that does not look like I'm wearing miniature boats.
Alphafly is the biggest flop in the running shoe game right now. Even Kipchoge stopped racing in them. It's too heavy and awkward. Everybody is wearing Next% 2.
6:10 - Ben 100% trying to stifle a laugh at the phrase ‘easy to whack it out whenever you need’ 😂 fantastic video as usual mate 🙌🏻🙌🏻
Great video as always Ben👍 And thank you so much for mentioning my channel, really appreciate it 😁
You forgot THE most important piece of equipment for female runners, a couple of decent sports bras! :)
Ha.. will have to ask Sarah to do a version for females!
I just discovered Brooks Dare Crossback bras... mind blown! I can't believe I've run for so many years in cheap bras!
@@BenParkes I rate the Runderwear Easy Up Bra! I’ve got two ;-)
I’ve always been successful with Shock Absorber Bras, never had any hot spots! Amazing if you are on the larger size of Cups! 😆

Fantastic recommendations from a true runner! I’ve got about 90% of the items you recommended. Top notch - bravo!

Good shout on the flip belt, Ben. I wouldn’t run a marathon without mine now. Life saver. 👍🏻
👍👍💯Great VIDEO Ben!!!! love your positive attitude Mate! Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

Excellent video with very practical, useful, and easy to follow advice. Thank you.
Hey Ben, you make great videos worth watching, and that was one of your best ever. Great stuff mate.
I totally recommend This Messy Happy for another UA-camr channel. Lovely people with the most amazing running dog friend. :)
Underrated channel
Me too! Thanks for the love guys 😘
Totally agree. I great channel.
Great tips! For a headtorch I 100% recommend getting something powerful. It makes a HUGE difference to night runs. I find the Petzl Actik Core fantastic and leaps ahead of the Tikkina
Awesome video Ben, thanks for sharing all these options for the price of a pair of trainers. Cheers and greetings from Guatemala.
This video was so helpful! Thank you!

As an Aussie who lived near Greenwich for 6 years it’s lovely seeing places where I used to run. Great vid

One thing that I love is an agility ladder. Helps with foot speed. Super Affordable and easy to carry around
Great tips Ben!
A quality sweat band! As someone that wears glasses, a hat won't keep the sweat and and the glasses from falling down.
Add some hair loss and you need all the help you can get to keep the sweat out of your eyes
It’s only when I forget my sweat band that I notice how much I need it. Sweated buckets on last ParkRun with no way of clearing sweat from eyes
Great content!! Thanks Ben.
Great video Ben! I have a light vest that is crucial because I need to run early.
Great idea for a video, and super helpful suggestions. My tip to help with running all year round; is to get some gloves for the winter. The pair I have got aren't the greatest, so I wouldn't recommend them 😀 but I need a pair as my fingers get so cold, and that just makes me miserable!
Great video Ben. Proud owner of one of your hats! Good all round recommendations
Really informative video appreciate it !

omg your cat is super cute!! thank you for the great tips! got my first marathon coming up in October so doing everything I can to stay injury free! 😆

One of the best vids you’ve made Ben. I think you’ve mentioned at least one or two things that are beneficial to any runner wherever they are in terms of ability. 👍🏻👍🏻

Naked band, Camelbak chill handheld and Salomon XA cap are my top items and helped me complete my first 50 miler

Yeah, ben and them are awesome, non sponsored, positive lovely people
I don’t know of these This Messy Happy people but they sound wonderful… 😉 thanks for the love 😘
Indeed! They are really amazing.
Great idea for a video and some great ideas !
Great video! Thanks.
Great idea for a video and massive kudos to you for putting it out as well. Top man Ben !!!

Hi Ben, So true and accurate, well done !!

For my bands I cut old bike tubes and tie them to size. Works perfectly
this is a really great idea for a video man like 10/10

Very cool video. 👊🏻 I agree, these shoes will help you but not nearly as much as people would think!
Some cracking advice here Ben...absolutely love how bad do you want it.
You're the running legend 👊
Cheers Ben I have a naked band 👍🏽 also big fan of The Extra Milest Podcast
Hi Ben. I agree about the free weekly park runs but we must also volunteer to help at our local event once in a while 😃 - standing back and watching is a good way of learning too 😀
Yes Claire! Should have added that really as well.. oops! Love volunteering.. probably more than running 😀
Hi Ben nice video I do your warm up then done me good I got 20 miles run 5 sep oct vital one 26 2 miles to do I love running its 👏
A flip belt, runderwear briefs and a sweat band have improved my comfort massively.
Nice tips Ben ! what do you think about the Nike Vomero series? it does not seem to be very popular but I really like them . I feel Vomero 10 (or 9) was pretty good , not sure about the current version.
My recommendations: Beetroot juice, coffee, Tailwind recovery powder (vegan), cbd oil for sleep, tiger balm/deep heat, weights...
I liked the metrodome tip. Gonna do that
With my Nike vaporfly I gained 3 mins on a half marathon training, same track in comparison to a classic shoe
Totally buying these shoes and all of the other gadgets
for me, one of the best running videos so far
Thank you Nico!
Good premise for a video. Keep it up.
Gloves are handy in winter, nothing worse then cold hands. I personally like Feeture socks and they work well for me!
Can you also make a book list on Instagram please. Make a story and save them as highlights :)
Do you have any videos on resistance band exercises to help runners please? Also can you advise on knee supports
For a lot of these check ebay!!! I've just got a set of resistance bands for £3.50, and a roller for 7 or 8. Better for the environment, too!!
all right, but stull, the Vaporfly and Alphaflly is a must for keeping up with the others
Fantastic video. Really enjoyed this one. Would love for you to do a video on heart rate on watch vs heart rate monitor as I’m unclear on why a watch heart rate would be so inaccurate and useless. Why would they include it on the watch?
Your trying to measure you heart - FROM YOUR WRIST , delay , lag , inconsistent data
Hi Ben, great video as ever. Super useful advice. I have a question about the socks, I tend to get blisters with some makes of running socks, do you ever have any issues with the Stance ones you wear?
I haven't had any issues with stance socks. But just stock up on the socks that don't give you issues!
Thanks Ben
Hey Ben
You thinking about selling those shorts eventually?
I have the Flipbelt flip belt.
Has proven valuable.
What a great video.
A 2x4 or stack of books for calve raises and reverse ones
Best thing I found to help my running is making sure I warm up and cool down properly. Bought a orb ball for rolling. That and learning what a Piriformos was. Kept getting calf problems and didn’t know why until I had a sport massage and realised my buttbcheeks were the problem. 😂😂
Agree re the 80/20 book. Great read
I'm Considering buying this shoe for triathlon races. I need a wide toe box and something snappy
So you will be using the Reebok float rides for your next race will you ?
A simple Rolling pin as a massage/foam roller does the job for less cheaper than the ones called so
Another great you tuber is Ed Budd.
That one about rolling your Fascia(TFL) is a really controversial one ... Most people won't advise to massage or roll any "fascia" in the body. But you should roll fascia-connected tissues
I’d recommend the podcast “flip the script” which is by Connor o’keeffe. Funny and some good ideas on mindset
I did in fact use your affiliate link to try to buy a flip belt and found a lot of reviews on the page complaining it is a counterfeit product. I’m not sure if that’s the case but you may want to double check those links
"Sage running" yeahhh boi !
Unless you're in realm of -3h marathon I think the alphaflys are a waste of money, so I'd spend those precious 260€ on stuff to help me get to that form and then buy the alphaflys or probably another shoe that does not look like I'm wearing miniature boats.
A think a pair of vaporfly would help a lot more with your actual running than all that clutter so this vids miles out 💯👌
A roller comes in clutch
hm, and how do you carry waterbottles with the flip belt??
I just can't get on flip belts, they always stretch out on me (maybe I need to buy better ones?
I much prefer vests.
Always just use what works best for you!
Quality idea but I’d take the Alpaflys 😜
Love the little smile at 6.10 whack it out 😆
HI Ben, Which flipbelt belt would you recommend?
I use a brand called Naked Belt. But they are a bit more expensive.. about £45gbp. Before I had a flip belt classic, which worked well.
A slant board!!
Alphafly is the biggest flop in the running shoe game right now. Even Kipchoge stopped racing in them. It's too heavy and awkward. Everybody is wearing Next% 2.
So in essence for 260, you can get Next%2s, a foam roller and register for an event! Lol
Best thing Ive bought is a vita-mix blender.
They are great! I wanted to put a blender in the video.. will have to do a follow up with some different items!
I want one but I really enjoy my nutribullet. It’ll tear up anything I put in my smoothies and it’s so much cheaper.
