The song itself is real sad, but what hits harder was the manga for this game.
There’s a part after link discovers the truth of the island and, realizing what’ll happen if link wakes the windfish, takes marin and steals a fishing boat, and spends hours trying to sail away with no success. It actually takes marin to talk sense into link that this is what he’s supposed to do, and he starts crying in her arms. Man, when the manga hits, it aims for the weak spot.

The manga also explains why Link keeps going after the Wind Fish despite multiple warnings that once he do so, Koholint will disappear along with its residence. In the game, since Link doesn't talk, it made it look that Link doesn't care what happens to Koholint knowing he will cause the island's end through his journey. He is new to the island yes but still.

After Majoras Mask, this has got to be the next saddest/darkest Zelda game. You make friends and enjoy these people’s company on this island, but to go home you must make it vanish.
But Majora's Mask had a happy ending for everyone (Exceptly for Link, but Links are kind of used to that). This game, on the other hand...

Just remember that in BotW after you wake up that almost everyone is dead that you cared about including, your friends, the King and your fiancée. All because you failed to stop Calamity Gannon the first time, really a happy little game..

@@IndigoShroom majoras mask showed no matter how hard you try and no matter how many times you can turn back time you can't save or help everyone not only that theres darker tones too like BOTW link failed once but majoras mask link keeps failing because he has to free all giants and help all the people in 3 days (but they made it simpler for gameplay sake) but he can't oh and MM link is only 11 as for BOTW link he's 17 and he hasn't had to watch someone die unlike MM link

She knows she’s a dream, but she doesn’t see the dream as any less valid than reality. After all what is the difference between a dream and a memory? In fact in some ways a dream is better. In dreams you can fly.

I see it more that no matter how wonderful the dream is it is always better to wake up. All she wanted to do in the game is get off the island(wake up) and see the world, but she could not because she was part of the dream. Her song is what wakes the Wind fish and ends the dream, a song she teaches Link so he can live her dream. Dreams are fine, but if we do not live what point is there to them.

It’s so sad because she is singing like she knows she is a dream, and what her fate is. Especially when she says “and I’ll fly” at the end. (If you were confused, when the dream ends at the end of the game, it appears Marin turned into a seagull, and soared off at the end.)

She didn't merely turn into a seagull, she was made real. She was a figment of the Wind Fish's imagination that seemed to have awareness of being a dream and desired to be reborn as a seagull so she could sing to the world.
When the sleeping god wakes, all the inhabitants of it's dreams cease to exist (this idea is explored in Hinduism, [look up "VISHNU, THE SLEEPING CREATOR" & "Vishnu Sustains the Universe"] and Elder Scrolls [look up Godhead, CHIM, and Amaranth]
Marin was spared this fate and given a physical form outside the dream.

The lyrics do actually describe how dreams are. Once you fall asleep you get lost in your dreams, tossing and turning unable to tell fake from reality. Making you questioning if the things you see actually exist. Then once you wake up your memories of the dream fade away with the only way to remember the dream being to write whatever you can down before you forget.
Not going to lie this made me feel depressed because Links Wakening is such a lighthearted game for the most part...

The deeper the meaning, the more they impact us. The closer the memory is to our hearts, the longer it exists.
I doubt Link will ever forget Marin or her song. I certainly won't.

For *years* I felt like the only person who remembered this song existed at all. I am still beyond happy with how it was treated in the Switch remake.
Watch as thousands of more players begin doing everything they can to not get a Game Over so they can get the True Ending.

I didn't play Link's Awakening until a couple years ago when I got it on 3DS but hot damn Marin went from zero to "I LOVE HER" way faster than I ever expected.
Makes me remember of Calypso's legend in greek mythology: a hero (in french his name is Ulysse, i know you know him) crashes on an island while doing a long travel after a big adventure, on this island, he meets Calypso: (doesnt matter in this context) a titan's daughter that got banned by the gods on an island she can't leave. (She sings really well by the way)
She helps the hero recovering and teach him that if he leaves, he'll never go back on the island
After she began to love him, he tells her that he needs to go back to his house, and well... leaves and never meet Calypso again

At some point the beach must be a giant mass of broken ships to the point where the dashing young man has to clamber over several shipwrecks to get to Calypso to fall in love, and by the time they get there another ship is already crashing with another dashing young man aboard.

you know what would have been ab absolute shell shock of a reveal? if when the time to wake the wind fish came, you had the option of either waking him up like you were supposed to, OR sacrifice the life of the windfish to make the island and everything on it a reality, so you could get off the island with everyone or come back to visit them, the choice to sacrifice an island of people or a legendary deity, all in the hands of link

I know right? The non-Hyrule Zelda games are great both narratively and design-wise.
Imo? This was one of Nintendo's games that pulled at heartstrings. Along with MM and definitely TP at the end with Midna.

you know how Marin wished to be a seagull? in the secret ending it shows a vision of Marin smiling and as that vision fades a seagull flies into view showing that her wish may have come true

i rember playing this game so many years on my game boy (even had the printer) as years passed and times moved on i used to whistle this tune not quite remembering where i remembered it from this game has had a lasting impact on me its a bittersweet story now this story is back and every bit of this game is flooding back and the many countless times I've cried this is why i love nintendo for 34 years strong thank you nintendo =)
Marin is the most tragic Zelda character, she only knew the island and her life there but was one of the few that knew she wasn't real and doomed to cease existing.

The ending was heartbreaking. But Marin's smile in the sky shattered me!
I think this could have been a lot darker if Link ended up having a child with Marin and the last thing he sees is his child. By this point Link knows he has done the equivalent of killing his child.
I have a fan theory on Marin, if you were ever wonder why (in universe) the Wind Fish would grant Marin's wish to become a seagull, I think it's because she like Link also tried to wake the Wind Fish & had a desire to leave the island, everyone else either didn't want the dream to end (the monsters) or were just happy living there, some believe there was nothing beyond the sea. A part of me wished we had a follow up game if not in whole than a part of a game, where Link reunited with Marin in reality. Perhaps magically able to turn into a Seagull to fly & back to travel. (closest we got is Hyrule Warriors which doesn't really count)

When I first heard this song I felt my heart break because I knew that she did not want link to leave but he had to return back to the driftwood where he was found as he never really did leave it behind he was just imagining the island and all of the people he met along the way were just his mind trying to remind him of what he was truly trying to remember after the events of link to the past

Literally everyone and the island ceases to exist in the end so that link and the wind fish can both awaken only for Link to be left adrift at sea in the rubble of his ruined ship. One of the saddest endings of any game 2 me.

I went from thinking this game looks trash to making it my top 3 favorite Legend Of Zelda games.
I feel like that's what everyone said about Wind Waker as well. It had a pretty poor initial critical response, only to become a late blooming crowd favorite. I think they were both before their time. Link's Awakening especially. The concept of the impermanence of reality and life, death, consciousness; released in an oft looked over handheld title in the nineties. Makes me wonder what else I may have missed.
Sounds like a Kingdom Hearts opening song. It gives me that anime feel, but still pretty sad.
When I started playing this game I had no idea how deep it would be.
