    When it comes to backpacking solo, what's the ONE thing that scares you the most and stops you from going? If you used to be scared of backpacking solo, what was the ONE thing that scared you the most and how did you overcome that fear?
    I'll go first! I used to be afraid of sleeping alone at a campsite, especially if there weren't any other backpackers around. After doing camping by myself a few times AND having to deal with some very crowded campsites, I started to purposely seek out sites where there weren't any other backpackers. I still get scared from time to time, especially if the campsite is REALLY quiet, but I've come to love having a campsite all to myself. Proof that you can face your fears and overcome them. Your turn!

    I had my first solo trip a few weeks ago. It was more fun than some group trips I have done. It was a short hike to a lake I've gone before. For me the scariest moment was in the middle of the night when a bird screached right next to my tent. But the next time I just screeched back at it and it went away.

      Why are those little animal noises in the middle of the night so scary? I loved that you screeched back. I'll have to try that next time. Hahahaha!

    Thank you for not preaching against carrying a firearm as other UA-camrs have. It's up to the hiker. Not all the trails are the same as the PCT. Keep up the great content!

      Agreed! Everyone hikes their own hike out there. The nice thing about backpacking is there's no one right way to do it. Find what works for you, carry with you what makes you feel safe and then get out there and have a great time.

      @@TheHungryHiker your channel is in my top 3 hiking channels btw. Keep it up! I personally carry mace.... for dogs. Getting harassed by unleashed hounds reached its zenith in the Desolation Wilderness last July. Here in the Ozarks we have aggressive feral pigs and razorbacks. Bear spray will do nothing. The extra 2# is worth it. Again, big fan.

    • @TheHungryHiker
      @TheHungryHiker  Рік тому

      Sounds about right. We all tend to pack our fears when we're scared and nervous. Eventually, with practice and more trips under your shoes, you figure it out and start to let those fears and after ounces in the pack go.

    Love Backpacking, best part about going by yourself is you have to meet people. Some Hostels, YHA, Backpackers can be a great environment, providing you do your homework and don't stay in the party houses. Unless that's what you want to do. We very rarely carry a tent now. Just stay in hostels. One Trip we have done many times is from Cape tribulation Daintree Forest all the way down to the Gold Coast Australia. Fly into Cairns fly out of Gold Coast or Brisbane. So many hikes and trails and the Wildlife is amazing, nothing better than waking up at 3:00 in the morning staring face to face with a Cassowary.. Lonely planet webpage and books are great as well. As for a Gun, I have not seen one for years. Would not even know where to get one or purchase a licence. Australias Gun Laws are massive, and for a good reason. Take care

    • @TheHungryHiker
      @TheHungryHiker  Рік тому +1

      I agree. When you're out there solo, you're more likely to meet people because you don't have a hiking partner or a group to distract you from striking up a conversation with someone you don't know. Another great benefit to solo backpacking!
      I think your backpacking and my backpacking is a little different. Most of the time on my backpacking trips, I'm staying in my tent somewhere along the trail. The only time I have the opportunity to stay in a hostel or hotel is when I'm in town. Those are what I call my town/resupply days. My trip to Nepal was the first time I got to trek and stay in teahouses along the way without having to set up my tent. It was quite luxurious!

      Glad you found this video helpful! I'm right there with you. Depending on what's coming up on trail like if it's a wonderful distraction like a lake, I don't mind getting to camp early so I can enjoy it. Same with an epic view. If I'm feeling especially lonely, then I'll choose to do a bigger mile day. That way by the time I roll into camp, I'm exhausted and don't have the energy to think about whether I'm lonely or not.

    I enjoy your videos. Great advice for beginner solo backpackers. I've been backpacking for (gulp) 54 years since I was in Boy Scouts. I started solo backpacking when I was 18 where I stayed the night in an abandoned fire watch tower but started solo day hiking when I was 13. I've been doing it ever since. My backpacking friends (old Boy Scout buddies) are still amazed that I go solo so much. I find that when I'm going solo I feel more immersed in the wilderness and find I smell, hear and feel things I don't when I'm with others. Your senses become more aware when you are alone. It has been almost a spiritual experience on occasion. Although I've been backpacking for so long I feel it it important to always try to learn and try new things. Happy Trails

      Thanks for checking out my video and glad you've been enjoying all of the videos I've been posting. One of the many things I love about backpacking is that you never really learn it all. There's always something new to learn and something you can approve upon and make more efficient within your system.

      @@TheHungryHiker The other thing that seems to amaze me is that despite all my years of experience I still occasionally make stupid mistakes. The last stupid one was hiking north instead of south when hiking a section of the PCT. I figured it out quickly but still felt stupid. My next thing to try is using a bidet while backpacking.

    What scares me the most would also be sleeping alone with just the noises of nature. Also the complete darkness outside even if the moon was shining. The sound of running river water making me think the river will overflow. Oh gosh I think I'm not cut out for it. So it seems that there have to be other campers. All those great tips and I still find it difficult. . You sure left me thinking. Great informative video.

      Valid fear! Sleeping by myself at a tentiste without any other backpackers around was the biggest fear I thought I had about being out on trail by myself. That is until I had to do water crossings by myself. A big reason why I choose to set up camp near a natural running water source is so that it drowns out any other "natural" noises and even more scary, breaks up the absolute silence the wilderness sometimes has at night. The absolute silence always freaks me out, even to this day. Hahahaha!!
