  • AMC came late to the muscle car party, but it still made a formidable contribution with its share of solid muscle cars. The best was the 1970 Rebel Machine which provided just about every muscle car option as standard any gearhead could want. The Machine gave AMC legitimate muscle car credentials, and has become a bonafide muscle car legend. Here's the story behind AMC's best muscle car, and why you don't mess with The Machine.

    It was a great car. I purchased a RWB Machine when I was in Viet Nam, using my parents as the go between. I came home October of 1970 and picked it up the same day. As it turned out I was the first Machine owner in the Delaware Valley. I lived in Springfield, Pa. The same day I picked it up I took the black shifter knob off an put a white Hurst shifter handle. Never missed a shift with it. I had it for 3 years.

    Growing up as a teenager in Detroit when these were available I remember them well. I never heard of the secret dealer parts package that put this car in the 12's. The AMC dealer on the east side ( Mack Avenue ) had rows of AMX's, Javelin's and SC/Ramblers. Between that dealer and the Plymouth dealer down the road, the car colors were unbelievable. What a time to be 18. Walking the lots on Sunday when no salesmen would hassle you was surreal. Occasionally some of the muscle cars were mistakenly left unlocked and you could sit in them.

    I had quite a few AMC's in the past. My first, a '73 Javelin with a 304 2bbl in 1980. I used to embarrass a lot of "rich kids" and their new Z-28s and Trans Ams that dad and mom got them. One of my funnest moments was humbling a Mustang was in a 401 equipped Hornet SC 360 with a 4 speed. I never underestimated any of the BIG THREE's offerings. But man O man, how they under-estimated my little 'ol American Motors cars. Seems like a hundred years ago now, but the memories of cruising " The Boulevard" seem like yesterday. Keep up the good work on these videos!

      @@tiki_trash At the time, AMC may not have been able or willing to do that. At that time, AMC specialized in economy cars; Packard may have been a little too high-end for their tastes and they knew they couldn't compete with luxury cars like Cadillac or Imperial. AMC did buy out Kelvinator, which enabled them to offer air conditioning as standard equipment on all their models (beating out every other car manufacturer). They also pulled off a brilliant move when they bought out the Jeep line.
      AMC did make good cars, some of which were better than the Big Three (Rambler, Hornet, Matador); but they simply didn't have the same sales or the big money. Kind of like Betamax being unable to compete with VCR, even though Betamax was actually a better quality product.

      Yep. GM and Ford even bought each others carbs a few times. Kelsey Hayes sold brakes to all of them. Borg Warner sold Transmissions, brakes, U-joints, clutches and lots of smaller parts to all of them. AMC even sold motors to other car companies too. And BTW Ramblers had dual braking systems by 1962 - Only other car with that was Cadillac.

    • @charlessmileyvideo
      @charlessmileyvideo 5 років тому +5

      And also, they used GM poins and caps and rotors. Why? because that was the best made then and why reinvent the wheel. They bought all their starters from Ford. Same reason. Small, efficient and one wire only. Best one available. AMC would OEM things if they thought it was the best solution - they had no axe to grind. So AMCs really had the best selection of parts overall.

Back in the 70's you couldn't give them away,and now you have the same thing just newer. Find a car you like and build it some day it will be ...well sort of this to the kids 40 years from now.

    History AMC did make 54 AMX carscin read whitec and blue. It came with a hi performance engine with two cam shafts . That's a second can that could be installed. The AMC company went after all the hot cars to be the fastest car on the Markit and put a huge engine in a light weight bodied car to be the king of speed. Again there where only 45 of theses AMX cars built in Red White and Blue . Once fitted with the second cam it was the first car built buy a manufacturer that ran in the 10 second 1/4 mile . Not many people know about this car but I have seen one and even to see one is vary rare has the most have long dissapeared it's a vary hard car to come by that is not well known.

    Indeed, AMC offered one of the first "packaged" muscle cars in the form of the '57 Rambler Rebel. I think it was the second fastest accelerating production car that year after the Corvette.

The cars you suggest, may have been faster at top speed (and I would think the supercharged, 300hp, Thunderbird, or any other Ford with that engine, would equal those two).

    Little remembered today, the Matador Machine carried the intermediate performance banner for AMC in 1971. Very few Matador Machines are known survivors today, as documenting one is rather difficult. It is uncertain how many Go Machine Matadors were even produced; they could be had with 360 or 401 power. Most of the performance and heavy duty items could be obtained a la carte on the Matador coupe for 1972 and 1973 as well.

      Eddie Stakes of Planet Houston AMX estimates about 68 Matador Machines in 1971 (they were simply reduced to an option package in the fine print of the sales brochure). And yes, a customer could custom build to order a '72 or 73 Matador Machine as well with the options.

Only modifications to it after all these years were, replaced the intake with the rare 1970 Rebel Machine cast iron medium rise intake, added larger 1" diameter aftermarket front sway bar with the addition of a 1/2" diameter, rear sway bar. The AMX accelerates like a rocket and corners like a go cart. The color is Cordoba brown with black interior and gold T Stripe up the hood. Many want to buy it, as it is basically untouched with all original replaced parts saved. It will stay in the family, as my son now takes care of it. When my son was born, he was brought home from the hospital in it. Simply an awesome car.

      @@audieconrad8995 , Thank you for the kind words. Maybe this is the wrong forum for this conversation about the Javelin AMX. I just wanted to add some information here. I had a conversation years ago with Eddy Stakes from Planet Houston, a large AMC site. He brought up the subject of the cowl induction that was added to the AMX package for 1971. There existed at one time a company memo that showed just how well the AMX's cowl induction actually worked. It was stated that the cowl induction would add an additional 10 to 13 more horse power to the 401 option of 255 horse power. This apparently was never offered in the certification of the original testing of the 401 engine. Furthermore at certification the incoming air temperature to the carburetor was maintained to an actual 115 degrees F. to meet emissions requirement. With the trap door activated in the open position at the top of air cleaner, the incoming air temperature would drop substantially, cooler and more dense air would then enter the carburetor. Then take in effect the force of the incoming air charge from the high pressure area at the base of the windshield. It would be easy to see the added horsepower gain to the original 255 as stated. It was also brought up, that not all the Javelin AMX's built could attest to this added horse power gain. The Javelin AMX had to be ordered with the Go Pac option in order to get the fully functional cowl induction. It was estimated that between 30 to 35% percent of all Javelin AMX'x built with the Go Pac option, between 1971 to late the 1973 production, came with it. There were no known 1974 Javelin AMX's built with the functional cowl induction hood. In early 1974 when the fiberglass hoods ran out, a regular Javelin hood was used in place till the end of production. The non functional cowl hood from 1971 to 1973, would have no duct work built into the underside of the fiberglass hood. Further more, at the back of the raised portion of the hood, in front of the wind shield, had a blank metal plate covering the opening where the outside air would normally enter a funcional hood. Thank you for your interest.

I had a 1970 Monte Carlo 350/4 brl Dual Exhaust, I bought off the original owner, there was a 68 Cutlass S, and a Mustang and Firebird 400, that were all respectable muscle cars in their time. But The Machine was the first to put that Firebird 400 in its rear view mirror, right out of the hole to 100 mph! But was not red white an blue, but a drab looking metallic brown, like shown in the video with a black hood scoop.
