Adam I am a 70 year old gentleman who began bonsai during the pandemic. All of my learning has occurred by watching enthusiasts on UA-cam. I found your channel and have enjoyed every video you have posted. You explain things beautifully. And yes a video on moss would be wonderful to watch. How to collect it, store it and properly apply it. Eagerly looking forward to your next video. Thanks. Greg
Great videography on these videos Adam. Don’t let the naysayers put you down. Putting your head above the parapet makes you a target. Keep growing, and keep learning, and enjoy what you do. 👍
I enjoy watching your videos. So, I have a Itoigawa Shimpaku Juniper coming in the mail from an online nursery. It is in a 6 inch grower's plastic pot. It looks more like a pre-bonsai as it does not seem to have ever been trimmed. Good size plant. When I get my plants from online I mostly get them that are not only tied down, but have a load of those plastic peanut things to get rid of and that takes a while. I live in the Frankfort area of Kentucky in the USA.
Mate, what a great channel to find, honestly, I just had to watch all your videos in almost one go. I loved all your videos and I find them so so informative, specially for people like me who are most of the time scared of handling plants. The opportunity to watch you for example repotting plants, using the fork, explaining how you use it to untangle the roots without damaging , all those small details are just a new level of confidence unlocked at least for me. Thank you, really, thank you. Got to your channel because I got a small Ficus and Carmona today, but having watched your vids opened a new world for me. Cheers!
Received my first Itoigawa recently from Herons, very expensive compared to a lot of sites but it’s been shaped beautifully prior to being imported. Can’t wait to get started on it in a few months. Great video.
I'm not following you on Social Media, but found you on You Tube. I think you are doing great. Your explanations are wonderful. I think you are clear how to do things, and I hope you make more videos. I can't wait to see how your Grans tree grows🤗
Another great bonsai video from you. Greenwood's bonsai have a video showing how they package their trees if you are interested. I am very lucky to be near them and Derbyshire Bonsai. I have yet to visit all things bonsai that is close to Sheffield. Keep growing xx
A well presented and enthusiastic video and I too share the joy of having purchased my first ever Itoigawa (actually two) juniper. I look forward to seeing how you develop yours next year and seeing if I can grab a few tips. Juniper is one of the species that remains a 'prickly' test for my skills. Cheers, Xav
Detail to detail and again very simple yet concise and comprehensive guide to art of bonsai. Thanks Adam! Something changed in your outfit style btw.. I like it! Cant wait for your next vid! :))
Great packaging imo. I've received everything from shredded newspaper and way to much tape, to packing peanuts. While the packing peanuts are, imo, the best bet for loose packing material.... I hate packing peanuts, theyre annoying 🤣. I really like the way they packaged it.
actually in japan, many bonsai artists keep moss on the trunk. In fact they let it grow on ever branch and all over the trunk. Over time, it looks like a tree in a humid environment with moss covering all their bark. This looks very natural. Although the water retention is true, People let the moss on the trunk completely dry out.
Hey Dofu Tofu! Thanks for sharing this Bonsai insight!! Very interesting stuff! I can totally see why they let it dry out. I like to remove it if its growing up the trunk as it can get re-hydrated with each watering 🙂
A very instructive video on this nice tree, Adam. I like the way you make your presentations, focusing on the important steps and right things and always enjoyable 😊. Keep going. Cheers Dirk
First tree I bought online was a deshojo and it was thrown in a netted bag and left at the side of the house...sent by Fastway (not sure if you have those up the north).
My Ito came packaged in shopping basket on top each other to create a plastic cage with plastic wrapped around the outside. Mine came hand delivered from Bangkok.
Ooooh, I think the hardest part of bonsai is to know WHEN you can do things with trees and when you should absolutely not. And the patience to wait! I'm afraid this is how I killed my first trees...
I'm totally new to the game. Do you have any advice or help for a newbie? How to get started etc. I'm looking to grow outdoor bonsai rather than indoors
Start with a simple tree such as a Chinese Elm or if want one indoors you can't go wrong with a Ficus Retusa type. If in UK they sell loads on Amazon. Seikatsu Bonsai are a fairly reliable supplier. Then make your own from Nursery stock or trees you find growing.. lots of Maples or Holly around growing in hedgerow.
Great advice here from Luigi!!! I'd also reccommend getting some aluminium wire and experimenting with some cheap garden center junipers. You don't need expensive scissors, normal scissors will do as long as they are sharp! Practice wiring, remember 2 branches to 1 piece of wire 😇
Now I’m thinking about digging up that volunteer Juniperus ashei (an abundant native weed tree here) and trying my hand at bonsai-ing it. Low risk since I don’t have to purchase anything
Oh wow nice! (Make sure to get land owners permission if you have to!) I wish you luck with your Bonsai journey! There will also be lots more videos to come! 🤗

Hey! Sure! A Jin is created by removing the bark on a branch that is cut short. It can be used to make the tree appear older, adding a feature to a tree that can make it look a little more interesting.
I know exactly what you mean! They will be removed when I give it a styling and repot this spring 😃 I just thought I'd demonstrate how to create a Jin. Way to many of em though lol
Hi there! Please let me know which information is not correct so I can correct it in the future 😊 I love to learn new things about Bonsai and am very open minded 😃 I do not believe there is one way to do Bonsai, rather many approaches and each artist has their own style. Thanks!
@@notionbonsai I'm not really having a go at you. Fair play for trying but remember to be accurate with the information you teach others. My main problem is the scare mongering about Lime Sulphur. It is very unlikely to burn you. It may cause a mild skin irritation to some people that might be sensitive to it if they leave it on their skin for a few hours. I have used it for 40 years and have never come across any bona fide example of the injuries you talk about. You applied the lime sulphur and then watered the tree which will have washed the lime sulphur off. Always a good idea to let it dry properly before watering it off. Itoigawa are not found in garden centres because the garden centre trade don't promote them as a garden tree due to them not having a naturally uniform growth pattern like the conifers they prefer to sell. They are better off being traded by the bonsai nurseries and utilised as bonsai. Please find a safer way to make your jin and shari before you cut yourself badly. A carpet knife is not really the safest tool to encourage others to use and people will be injured if trying to copy you. Apart from that keep it up.

Too many jins and all the same size. This causes a herringbone effect which is never good on any bonsai.
