Paderewski started his public career at the age of 28....so, at 23 he didn't even met Lechtivisky.....he was struggling with his lack of technique and hopes to became known as composer more as a pianist 🤔

I watched this movie about 50 years ago and it stuck with me ever since. I eventually learned to play it on the guitar years before finger tapping became popular. This man had me spell bound watching his big hands racing up and down the keys.
Paderewski, piano playing Prime Minister...what a mouthfull........this is a tricky piece, I play it & nearly fell off ye old piano bench jumping around so much. (that would have been one for youtube.) I give him credit, a lot of credit, he did a good job of it, even though some technical flaws could be heard., I still liked it. Thumbs up to P.M. piano playing Paddy !

Yesterday I found and played the film this comes from, Moonlight Sonata, 1937. He plays this Liszt at the beginning of the film. He plays it as it almost doesn't deserve to be played, as a wonderful composition. He performs with such passion and unadulterated musicality. As though this is how it is supposed to be performed. He especially plays the circus-like bits as proper music to be played the right way.Especially the concluding bars, not dashed off but given weight. Boże Przenajświętszy! Co to była za wielka postać w naszej historii! Dzisiaj takich ludzi się już nie spotyka! Przypomnijmy, że ten wielki człowiek i patriota, prawdziwy bohater narodowy, dzięki któremu Polska odzyskała niepodległość po 123 latach zaborów, sfinansował w Krakowie pomnik upamiętniający zwycięstwo Królestwa Polskiego i Wielkiego Księstwa Litewskiego nad Zakonem Krzyżackim w bitwie pod Grunwaldem w 1410 roku. So clear why the people loved him so much. Despite his very prominent technical flaws, there is so much emotion in his playing, moves the soul. This is my favourite rendition.
Technical flaws ?! His technique is certainly perhaps unconventional but it most definitely not 'flawed' and his execution powerful and expressive. I' sorry I have to defend Paderewski here because his interpretation of fingering and performance gets the job done in a way far more captivating than any other rendition of this piece.

Astonishing since so much of P's playing in old age sounded decrepit. This is remarkably proficient. The cadenzas in the Lassan were just brilliant. The repeated notes were crisp and clean. Hs octaves and fast moving chords were handled with aplomb. I've heard faster renditions but few I'd call better.
He was Prime Minister AND Foreign Minister of the newly re-established Polish state which emerged post WW1 (he signed the Treaty of Versailles on behalf of Poland). He was instrumental in convincing President Wilson to support a sovereign Polish state, independent from their Russian oppressors, something that Wilson incorporated into his famous 'Fourteen Points' designed to reshape the post war world. As if that wasn't enough, he was also -almost as an aside -arguably the greatest pianist in the world. A great Pole, one of the very greatest.
Wonderful! I also like Paderewski's playing of Chopin's Ballad #1 better than that of anyone else's. Horowitz comes close, but Paderewski is the greatest!

I have it on an old vinyl album entitled Ignace Jan Paderewski Plays Chopin. It was produced by Everest Records Archive of Piano Music by transferring the piano roll recording to the vinyl disc. They say that from 1916 to 1925 almost every prominent concert pianist made piano rolls. Ballade No. 1 is #3 on Side B. Good luck with it, Dejan.

This is pure Paderewski, with all the good and bad things. Anyway, beside all the wrong notes, abuse of pedal, the sound and the speed it is still amazing.There are parts of this piece that not any pianist could reach.

If there was any artist I wish to have lived a thousand years, it's Paderewski. He would have killed neoclassical pieces, it is an eternal pity his talent could only live once.

Un consejo para los principiantes que escuchan esta versión es que no se dejen llevar por la gran cantidad de errores técnicos, son aparentes, éstos son compensados con resolución posterior; en otras versiones no los compensan, en ésta sí.

Todo depende del interprete en como ejecutarla, y hay piezas como ésta que interpretes terminaron de perfeccionarla, como Vladimir Horowitz. When I was a small boy in the 1950's taking piano lessons my Grandfather would call me Paderewski. He was 77 when this was performed.

Y ahora, hablando de Horowitz, prefiero escuchar a su amigo y compositor Sergei Rachmaninov interpretando esta pieza. Sin duda alguna, él se luce con esta pieza.
Conclusión:
1. Tampoco me gustan las ejecuciones actuales.
2. La pieza jamás será perfeccionada en sí.
3. A parte de Paderewski, os recomiendo que escuchen a Rachmaninov. ❤😏 Es un grande. 🌚
