Apart from increasing "talk power" compression is also a good way to stay clear of ALC. Also used correctly it is good when your amplifier only needs a fraction of the radios output for drive.... most people will not notice 3-6dB of compression as far as quality is concerned.
@@watersstanton Thank you Peter, I know different rigs have different structures to control the output, one of my ancient flagships triggers ALC earlier if you reduce the RF power, far more sociable to reduce drive and let the compression take care of the limiting. Thank you for a thought provoking video series 73
On my Ic 705, I set my mic gain so that I have about 25% of ALC, then I turn on the compression and set it so it is approximately 5db. What I notice with my 705 is that as I add compression the ALC increases. In this video with your Elecraft, your ALC didn’t seem to increase when you increased the compression. Is there something wrong with my IC 705? And if I set the mic gain with compression off to give about 1/4-1/2 the ALC meter and then turn compression on to 5db and it doesn’t go beyond the red ALC line, will my audio sound ok? I haven’t had anyone to test my audio with yet. Thank you.
I have the Yaesu FT-950 and it does the same. The manual suggests setting things until you have 5 -10 compression at peaks and ALC hitting around 50% at the same time. If I move compression higher the ALC follows. I also noticed I get great audio reports on DX but local on 80m and 40m I am often asked to turn the proc off and just go with mic gain to adjust. Seems to work for me. I use a webSDR out of Utah to listen and record my own TX audio to test and adjust and it seems that the manual is correct for best results.
Wonderful new subject ... But how it sounds in receiving station ? i wish you present another episode relevant to How to make your sound sounds like a Pro Broadcast Station
I use the compression on my Icom IC 703 qrp rig. I only use it for dx contacts running 5 watts and a EFHW 10-40 antenna. Done pretty good too. Japan, Australlia, South Africa, and alot of Europe.73 ki0ad
Great video, and valuable information, many thanks, Sam !

Thanks man!
No problem!
