Idk why but the fact that Quarth, Vaes Dothrak and so on is sooo far away from Westeros is mindblowing to me. I always considered Essos as this kind of big desert with only a few tribes here and there, always a bit underdeveloped (exept for Bravos and stuff). I always thought the big citys like Mereen, Bravos, Pentos, Quarth and so on were located on the west coast, close to Westeros...
Great geographic explanation dude although some cities didn’t gained the proper explanation such as old town or volantice but you explained the races in a very unique detail which encourages writers to write something about them
If I was to make lore like this, I'd go like this. Come up with something Why does it exist Can it link to other things What does it do Why Why Why Constantly ask it's purpose and it suddenly falls into place and becomes more realistic
The most interesting of the four continents is the most ambiguous, Ulthos=we literally know nothing, Sothoryos=we know almost nothing, Essos=we know a lot but like half of the lore is mysterious to us, Westeros=we almost know everything.
Just stumbled across this video and wow, you did an awesome job on this. I have not read the books, so I am always searching for videos to break things down for me, and this is one of the best GoT world videos i've come across.
Ess Wye. Reminds me of how some Americans are trying to keep other new “immigrants” from settling there, though their families once came from across the oceans as well.
That was awesome man! I had read most of the lore online before but this clarified a lot of it and made it much easier to understand geographically. Thanks!
In the movies, the white walkers were made by the children of the forest. They pierced the heart of one of the first men with a dragon glass. Because they were losing the war to the first men.
there are so many creepy places in eastern essos even beyond yi ti and asshai, we dont know much about the 5 forts other than there are 5 of them, the walls are made of slick black stone which is potentially dragonglass or some other material and the walls being taller and thicker than the wall in the north, then there is the city of winged men beyond the shadow lands. wish George would give us more details and info about these distant lands and what the hell is beyond the 5 forts that caused yi ti to need to build them to defend themselves
There is so much to this game of thrones universe that they could literally create spinoff series about different parts of this world for the rest of my life and still have a lot uncovered. Would be cool if someday they made an open world game based on this universe, we're getting to that point where it could be possible on such a massive scale, wouldnt be suprised if we could have such a massive open world game within 10 years from now, just look at how much bigger open world games have become the last 10 years.
If you think about it, the White walkers are very interesting too, we just take them for granted now that the tv series and books focus on them so much. If the books and tv series focused on what was going on in eastern Essos instead for example, then we would probably be just as curious about Northern Westeros and the rumours of White walkers as we are curious now about the stuff going on in the other continents :)
i like to think really that because these places are so far away most of these details are either untrue or extremely over exaggerated as well as people tend to do regardless a series focusing on the exploration of these places would be awesome
Apparently there was once a Stark king(centuries before the time of the show) who wondered that as well and built ships to explore the Sunset Sea. He was never heard from again.

It blows my mind that you know soooooo much about G.O.T. that you can actually give the complete fictional history & geographical history and explain it in such detail! Love this video and thanks for the history lesson! Amazing 🤘
i like videos like these. maybe if you are willing you could do like monthly videos on lore that isn't Westerosi. i like hearing about Sothoryos, Shadowlands and all the places you hardly hear about unless you dig really deep to find it. i think it enriches the whole aspect of GoT world as we know it. the only mysterious beings that are mentioned in the show are White walkers/the others, giants, the children. 3 of them out of around 15+.
I think Westeros is based off of the UK with some European countries and Essos is Eurasia... I think Valyria is definitely based off of the Roman Empire and there are some Free Cities which seem more European.
@@awaywiththefaeries9464 i wonder if there will ever be a Game of Throne version of the Mongol Empire, but the Dothraki is seem to be based on the Mongol
This video is awesome because it makes it easy to see how Martin used the real world as inspiration for the GoT world. GRRM confirmed he used the war of the roses as a baseline for GoT. Using that fact, you can see that Westeros is the UK, the Iron Islands is Ireland, and Scotland is the North. My favorite overlap is how its pretty obvious that Valyria is the Roman Empire. Fits perfectly with both the description of the civilization AND its location. Which means Ghis is either referring to the Persian Empire or a combination of the Persian Empire/Greece (basing that on skin color/cultural description, location of both places, and the name Ghis and Greece. Also Persia hit its peek basically right before Rome started doing its thing so that fits perfectly with both real life and GoT as well.) Like I said...this video is super cool lol.
I hate how everyone depicts westeros as only the british isles if that was the case then how do you explain the similarities between dorn and spain, iron isles and denmark, the north and scandanavia .... just because they all speak english doesnt mean they are from england
Damn, idk which series is my favorite. But my top 3 are definitely Lord of the Rings Game of Thrones and The Witcher I was depressed after all 3 ended 😢
There's imaginative people, and then there's George RR Martin. I'm obsessed with GoT and read the books, but I didn't know a lot of this stuff. Great video.
Jesus Christ, this map is so vast and has so many different races and factions going in it looks like GRRM planned it to be a 20 book series or making 4-5 different series out of it. I knew Essos was large but I didn't even see a map showing that we only knew like 50% of it's western half of it and I've never heard or seen anything about those other 2 contintents at all. I must admit I have only read the first two books so far.
The world and history are so interesting in this. I'd love a game or something on all this. Or maybe multiple TV shows depicting different time periods. I'd love to learn more about Valyria before it got destroyed, or why and how Asshai and Stygai exist and who created them. And the old on earth from YiTi or the people who might have lived in the city from the thousand islands. SO MUCH lore. Or even the peoples or gods or species that used to live in Sothoryos. There seems to be so much more there and for such a massive continent you'd expect some history and lore. And there's fucking Ulthos. So much lore that could be explored. And then there's the fact that as a whole we know so little about the world of GoT. There could be hundreds of other continents and peoples and races and species that we never see.
I love how many of these places reflect real history. Westeros is similar to the British isles and the first men and andals were like invaders from mainland Europe, and the children of the forest are like the Celts. The Summer Isle reminds me of Japan, both their fates changed when an explorer’s vessel wandered into their harbors. The Dorne land bridge that used to connect Westeros with Essos is like the land bridge that connected Asia and North America.of course, Valyria was the Roman Empire of A World of Ice & Fire.
4:28 "A few first men houses claimed the rule as kings of the Riverlands and the only ones worth talking about are the Brackens and Blackwoods" *House Mudd: Am I a joke to you?* The Mudds, were the last of the First Men to rule the Trident, reigning for a thousand years. They were the most powerful and expansive of the First Men river king dynasties and claimed land as far south as the mouth of the Blackwater Rush. Great video nonetheless! 🤙🏾
Just one request, make the audio more clear, for non English speakers, it becomes difficult at times to understand what you are saying. I understand you had to fit a lot of stuff in a short time, but the editing of voice could have been better. Alternatively you can add proper captions for the same. Otherwise its an excellent video, crystallised all the info in a very simple and comprehensive manner. Great job.
I love how the further from Westeros you go the more mysterious the world of Game of Thrones gets. It’s like Westeros and western Essos is the world we know and are familiar with, just like our world, but then the further you go the more it becomes like an alien planet. Just imagining the strange creatures and landmasses and the civilisations that are out there, it must be how people felt during the Middle Ages in our own world, only in this world it’s actually real.
I think it's interesting that the further you go from Westeros the more magical and mysterious the places in the world are. My headcanon is that the mysticism from is mostly superstition and ancient legends; like Asshai (if it truly exists) is probably just a regular city, or that the green people of the thousand islands don't exist.
I really hope after Season 8 of GoT is over they make some prequel episodes with a bunch of lore in them. I find GoT lore so damn interesting and it would be awesome to see some of these events happening in episodes. Even if it wasn't a complete series but single episodes with different events in all of them, I'd be happy.
Only thing I really noticed was that there was no mention of Children of the Forrest creating the White Walkers. I have unfortunately not read the books yet, but now that the show is ended, I will see how it was truly supposed to go down.
Sothoryos really interests me, at some point in the future I hope we explore that place, wether it be in books or a tv show I would love it either way ...
It was said that an old Targaryen queen flew south on that continent for 3 years on her dragon and turned around saying there was no end to the continent
Thank you so much for this! Everyone who has not yet seen the series, but will, should really see thus video first. Also, I heard they’re making a few spin-offs, but I really would like to see a series taking place in Essos aswell

He studied history, spent decades writing tv scripts, for movies, short stories, and books. His wealth of historical knowledge helped him build a world nearly more massive than Tolkien’s depth, but written in a more historical style rather than epic poem esque and mythical nature of Tolkien’s work.
Imagine this world actually exists in some corner of the Universe
Lets go!
It probably does in another universe.
Well it does but then without a the magic, it's clear that Westeros is based off England while Essos is based off Turkey
The universe is so incredibly big that there is a chance theres a planet very similar.
@NPC69 More like 800
Idk why but the fact that Quarth, Vaes Dothrak and so on is sooo far away from Westeros is mindblowing to me. I always considered Essos as this kind of big desert with only a few tribes here and there, always a bit underdeveloped (exept for Bravos and stuff). I always thought the big citys like Mereen, Bravos, Pentos, Quarth and so on were located on the west coast, close to Westeros...
Qarth not Quarth
That's how Khal Drogo imagines westeros to be
Seven big islands floating on the sea for the seven kingdoms
I know more history of a tv series than the actual world we're living in.
Congratulations, you are now then officially living in a simulator

Great geographic explanation dude although some cities didn’t gained the proper explanation such as old town or volantice but you explained the races in a very unique detail which encourages writers to write something about them
George RR martin had to be on something. This is pure genius.
If I was to make lore like this, I'd go like this.
Come up with something
Why does it exist
Can it link to other things
What does it do
Why
Why

Constantly ask it's purpose and it suddenly falls into place and becomes more realistic

Essos is more interesting than westeros
Syed Asad what about sothoryos
That's because Westeros is explored
The most interesting of the four continents is the most ambiguous, Ulthos=we literally know nothing, Sothoryos=we know almost nothing, Essos=we know a lot but like half of the lore is mysterious to us, Westeros=we almost know everything.
SSJR Goku-Black Jon snow belongs in ulthos then, I guess.
Why is that? @@HeadshotFilms1
Just stumbled across this video and wow, you did an awesome job on this. I have not read the books, so I am always searching for videos to break things down for me, and this is one of the best GoT world videos i've come across.
Thank you Renee
I agree
So basically, everyone in GoT is originally from Essos, but acknowledging Daenerys as “foreigner”... mkay
Well in our world it’s believed that humans came from Africa so we’re all African?
Ess Wye.
Reminds me of how some Americans are trying to keep other new “immigrants” from settling there, though their families once came from across the oceans as well.

So in a nutshell, GRRM is the GOAT. dude's imagination is awesome
still not as incredible as tolkien tho
@@felixvergro i disagree. both are amazing and are not comparable

He's pretty good. But not as good as Tolkien. Tolkien's universe is way bigger and well furnished
In the movies, the white walkers were made by the children of the forest. They pierced the heart of one of the first men with a dragon glass.
Because they were losing the war to the first men.
there are so many creepy places in eastern essos even beyond yi ti and asshai, we dont know much about the 5 forts other than there are 5 of them, the walls are made of slick black stone which is potentially dragonglass or some other material and the walls being taller and thicker than the wall in the north, then there is the city of winged men beyond the shadow lands. wish George would give us more details and info about these distant lands and what the hell is beyond the 5 forts that caused yi ti to need to build them to defend themselves
there should be a star wars style expanded universe, through independent authors and writers
grrm may not even know himself, who knows if he has written or even thought of the details to these places.
My memory might be a bit wonky but Yi Ti didn't build the forts ...they were there before the Empire ...
@@SquadPoopy nope. We wouldn't want anyone to mess up anything about this world. Everything should be by RRM or no one else.
Since GoT world is a globe, then maybe Westeros and Essos are connected, with The Lands of Always Winter separating the two?
There is so much to this game of thrones universe that they could literally create spinoff series about different parts of this world for the rest of my life and still have a lot uncovered. Would be cool if someday they made an open world game based on this universe, we're getting to that point where it could be possible on such a massive scale, wouldnt be suprised if we could have such a massive open world game within 10 years from now, just look at how much bigger open world games have become the last 10 years.
The geography of this world is endlessly fascinating to me
So basically Sothoryos, ulthos and asshai are the more interesting and we don't know almost nothing about them xD
Asshai sounds like it has had it's own doom because the land seems so wasted, hopefully we get a few stories on it to show what really happened there.
i like to think really that because these places are so far away most of these details are either untrue or extremely over exaggerated as well as people tend to do regardless a series focusing on the exploration of these places would be awesome
Don’t know almost nothing? So we know a fair bit
So how much is that? A normal amount or a lot much?
As the Girl once wondered: 'So what's west of Westeros'?
the world is flat!
The east coast is Essos
Perhaps "America" is waiting to be descovered.
Apparently there was once a Stark king(centuries before the time of the show) who wondered that as well and built ships to explore the Sunset Sea. He was never heard from again.

This was amazing! Thank you for taking the time to boil down thousands of years (or pages of information) into a concise and understandable video!
i like videos like these. maybe if you are willing you could do like monthly videos on lore that isn't Westerosi. i like hearing about Sothoryos, Shadowlands and all the places you hardly hear about unless you dig really deep to find it. i think it enriches the whole aspect of GoT world as we know it. the only mysterious beings that are mentioned in the show are White walkers/the others, giants, the children. 3 of them out of around 15+.

Westeros is great Britain
I think Westeros is based off of the UK with some European countries and Essos is Eurasia... I think Valyria is definitely based off of the Roman Empire and there are some Free Cities which seem more European.
@@awaywiththefaeries9464 you think?
I can see the Andals being like the Normans
Ghis. They build pyramids, hint, hint.
And the Dothraki are the Mongols. The Free Cities are the Italian city states.
@@alexbouffler8577 The Andals i'm pretty sure are the Angles who were a Germanic tribe who settled in England just after the Romans left.

Essos is low-key more interesting than Westeros
It’s also twice the size
True
"Low-key"
I hope all the other beautiful stories of these places, islands, kingdoms, and unknown continents get to grace the small screen in this lifetime.
Elessar too bad he wont be able to flesh it all out, he is getting on in age
Originally there were only going to be three books.
I love lore
Godeezy i wrote this with my nose
When you realise that essos doesnt end there
What is the west of westeros

4:28 "A few first men houses claimed the rule as kings of the Riverlands and the only ones worth talking about are the Brackens and Blackwoods"
*House Mudd: Am I a joke to you?*
The Mudds, were the last of the First Men to rule the Trident, reigning for a thousand years. They were the most powerful and expansive of the First Men river king dynasties and claimed land as far south as the mouth of the Blackwater Rush.
Great video nonetheless! 🤙🏾
Fabulous. My new goal during the pandemic is to rewatch all the Games of Thrones read the books. Thank you.
4:34 No love for House Mud and “The Hammer of Justice”?
I literally got a neon ad for game of thrones season 8 when I loaded up this video it so well coordinated
Only thing I really noticed was that there was no mention of Children of the Forrest creating the White Walkers. I have unfortunately not read the books yet, but now that the show is ended, I will see how it was truly supposed to go down.
