I live 100% off grid and I use the Sawer Mini with the Cnoc Vector 3 Liters dirty bag as a gravity filter system every day of my life to filter about 20 liters daily and it is very fast, the bag that comes with the filter, that one is very slow, only works as a squeeze bag only (I do not use it). Bests regards from a Venezuelan viewer!
Great video, which I stumbled upon searching for tips for my new Sawyer filter. But you absolutely hooked me right from the start when I saw your 1st Marine hat. My father served in 1st Marine in the early 50's... yes, in Korea... yes, under Chesty's command. OORAH to you, and you have a new subscriber. And my CNOC bags are on order.
My dad also was with the 1st Marines in Korea. Who knowns. He may have known your dad. Its a small world. Thank you BJ Backitis for watching and subscribing. I really appreciate it.
Semper Fi! This is the best functional, simple, effective system I have seen. I already have several Sawyer filters. You are correct about the mini having very reduced flow compared to the larger filter. Think I need to pickup a couple CNOC bags before my next trip.
I bought 2 CNOC bags when they came out about 5 years ago. And still using them. No leaks. Before that I tried every bag out there. They all would leak less then a year. I highly recommend those CNOC bags. Thank you Jason for watching. I really appreciate it.
Thank you for noticing that Lean Share & Evolve. I was hoping that people will see that no matter how clear the water is. Always filter or boil the water.
I have the same CNOC bag and have used it many times, its never failed. also I did test by filing it with water and stand on it, it did not bust and I'm 215lbs! I enjoy watching your videos and they are informative and entertaining why would anyone give a thumbs down.
I though about standing on them in this video. But I have put on a little to much weight this year. But that would of been funny if they would of broke while filming. that you Ellis For watching. I really appreciate it.
Great video! Instead of a hose, try the Sawyer Cleaning Coupler. Weighs almost nothing, It screws on to the end of the filter, then screws onto the water bottle. Allows for simple back flushing, and when the whole rig is hung from a tree branch, (or your hammock suspension), it works as a gravity system. This has been my go to filtration setup for a couple of years now.
Some useful tips for the Sawyer filter. I use one as my backup, but my primary for the trail these days is the Grayl. Much quicker and far easier to use and clean out, plus you have a container as part of the filter apparatus.
I use all the same items except the screen washer, but I will. I also use an attachment for the sawyer that screws onto a smart water bottle. I like the attachment because it helps keep dirty water out of the clean water and if the bottle tips no water is lost. Hike on brother.
I have used my Sawyer Mini with a CNOC bag as gravity feed system. You just have to clean it more often by blowing into the part where the water comes out. That being said, I switched to the Kadadyn befree and love it.
I like the Befree from Kadadyn. But when I get to camp. Having those two bags full of water for drinking and cooking. Both bags would last that night, next morning and plus filling my two water bottles for the day's hike. I only have to collect water once a day. The older I get. I guess the lazier I get.
The flow on the 1.0 is amazing compared to the mini. But the Cnoc bags has made the biggest impact for me, when it comes to filtering water. I could never find a bag that would last a year. But after getting those Cnoc bags. I still have the same two bags that I bought over 5 years ago. Thank you Negan for watching. I really appreciate it.
I use a Sawyer mini on a gravity filter system I put together with a smaller 2 gallon dry bag as a bladder. It is a bit heavy but works well for when I filter for my two sons and I as long as I keep the filter clean. I've been thinking of switching to the Sawyer Squeeze and after seeing how fast it flows in your video I'm sold and will be making the switch soon. Great video as always and thank you.
The Sawyer mini may flow well for a short time. But they slow down very quickly and have to be flushed out. With the larger Sawyer filter. You could do a short trip without ever having to flush it. So far I have yet to find that filter, when it was not flowing freely. I strongly recommend that you switch to the Point One filter. Your two sons will thank you. I always appreciate you watching Woodwzrd.
@@AdventureswiththeMarine I just ordered one and will be using it this weekend on the Ice Age Trail up in Taylor county. Thanks again for a great video.
I as well made a gravity filter w/a mini and a old bladder. It is a little slow but will filter 2 liters in about 1/2 an hour. By the time camp is set up, I have plenty of water. And if I need water quickly , just squeeze a empty water bottle. I back wash it after every trip and never had a problem after 2 years
many thanks, i've been wanting to get into filtration and wasn't overjoyed at the idea of spending serious money on a fancy pump system. this sounds like a MUCH better option.
Cheers for this mate, very informative. I've been researching filtration and nothing seemed to cover all the points that are/were important to me. A hybrid system exactly like you show here seems to be the answer. I would only add 1 more thing to my kit which would be the UV pen. Knowing my luck, it would be that 0.0001% virus that didn't get filtered that ends me.
Interesting video. Try using a millbank bag to pre filter your water. You will not have to clean your filters as often and it will give you a longer life for the filter. Pro tip . . . Ray
Excellent I have the same system, love the CNOC, what is a great tip and I don’t have is a creep washer.. great idea. Again, well demonstrated video.. cheers Marine
Awesome. Thanks for this video. I am starting to experiment to figure out my gear loadout for backpacking trips (and am actually headed to a campsite today for a couple days to experiment with my gear and I have a few more things to do to my hammock to get it the way i like) because I really wanna go hike/see some cool places. I already had a CNOC bag and the Sawyer Mini based on YT videos. Wish I would have known about the free flow of the bigger one sooner haha. I will try out the mini today, but if it's as difficult as you say, then I will probably just upgrade. And I like the backflow adapter. I'll definitely have to make one of those, regardless if which Sawyer I have.
The fall colors are spectacular. Heading up north with Runner on Thursday. But I am afraid the colors are past peak. Hope to see you up there Grumpy Grunt. Semper Fi
In my opinion, you should fill up buckets of filtered water with the unfiltered water. It would be much more efficient than a water bottle =) Thanks for all the info though, definitely gonna use it for camping. I also already have a Life Straw Go, but this seems much more easier and less energy-consuming.
Hello Marine, I am looking for a light weight water filtation system, as I moto-camp and loading my motorcycle up with water is not very condusive to the weight. Your video sold me on what I need for my setup. Thank you, It is very informative and your knowledge is much appreciated. Thank you also for your service. My son is currently a recruit at MCRD San Diego to become a Marine on October 8th. Semper Fi
Your son is going to be a Hollywood Marine ( a Marine the graduates from MCRD San Diego ) Tell him I said Semper Fi. Thank you so much Andreas for watching. I always appreciate it.
I can't take credit for that. I seen it on some UA-camrs channel years ago. I wish I knew his name to give him credit. I hope all is well with you OldPackMule.
Really enjoy seeing those bright red maple leaves! Hope to see a bwca fall color video soon. I'm planning on replacing my platypus bags with cnoc bags when they wear out. I use the sawyer mini as a gravity system and have no problems at all. I use the smartwater bottle sport tops with hose and always put the filter on the hose end farthest from the bag. It increases the pressure or hydraulic head to get a nice flow. The smartwater bottle fliptop also works great on a bottle to backflush the mini easily. Thanks for the tip about the aquarium pump. I hadn't thought about that before. Best wishes as always, stay safe and free!

Thanks so much for this great information. Like you, I’ve been through a lot of water filters over the years. I stayed away from the Sawyer mini because so many people say the bag breaks easily, sometimes with the first use. I’m currently using the Be Free but that best for dipping in the water for a quick drink while I’m out paddling. I didn’t know about the new Sawyer and am so happy to find out about the Cnoc bags. I’m pretty sure I’ll finally have the perfect set up now! Does the newer Sawyer come with the back flush? How about the tubing for gravity fed filtering? That must be separate. Just want to make sure I get the t try right size. Can you tell me where I get that? Thanks for a great and very timely video!
The Sawyer Point One comes with a back flusher. The tubing is separate. I just put in a link for the silicone tubing that I have been using. They are pretty durable and rolls up nicely. The Be Free is great to have in a canoe or a kayak. The system that I have shown. Works so great in camp and on the trail. Even if there are one than one person. Thank you for watching Susan. I really appreciate it.
Backpacking With a Hammock, thanks so much for your quick response and for adding the link to the tubing. I’m excited about finally finding what looks to be the perfect set up. Really like how the Sawyer Point One has the wide opening for filling with water and the Cnoc bag - excellent! The Be Free is OK but has a soapy taste to it and only really works well in my canoe. For cooking I need something that will filter more water. They make a bigger, liter size filter now but I have my heart set on the Sawyer Point One. Thanks again! I’m a new subscriber and am also interested in hammock camping so I’ll look through your previous posts for information and suggestions. So glad to have found your channel!
I'm one person I like this, I need a system for the house. Currently drink bottled water. What system do you recommend ? Afraid to drink city faucet water
Awesome! I’ve got the same setup and love it! CNOC also has color coded bags, I run a 3L orange/dirty water to a 3L blue/clean water and let gravity do the work for camp water, that’s after I squeeze at least a 1L for carry around. Love the back flush tip and the screen idea, I’ll be using those next trip for sure!
thanks Marine for your service and this good video.. I checked on the CNOC bags and they are not available and aren't sure if they will be.. .bummer... looking to purchase a Sawyer point one...
The Cnoc water bags will be available soon. So make sure you keep checking the website. That is such a great filter. Stay away from the Sawyer mini squeeze. It is so much more worth paying a few more dollars for the Sawyer point one. They may have changed the name to the Sawyer Squeeze.
If you have a smartwater bottle with a sport cap, you don’t need anything else to back flush. The sport cap will fit directly on the Sawyer filter to back flush it.
Good clear presentation. Just one comment, I'm sure that I read somwhere that the filters should not be dried out, once they have been wetted for the first time. Something to do with the materials used. The tubing or bags could be dried ok, but the filter should remain wet. I would imagine that drying the filter would not be a good idea anyway, as any sediment that hasn't flushed will set hard, shortening the effective life.
I don't think you can get all of the water out. But make sure you backflush it out at home. Before you pack it for your trip. You will be surprised to what comes out of it, by being stored for so long of a time. Thank you Kevin for watching. I really appreciate it.
@@AdventureswiththeMarine Many users of the Katadyn recommend storing it wet, full of distilled or de-ionised water, which they claim greatly improves the un-clogging process. I haven't tried it, but it sounds a good idea for any filter, so long as you rinse it through prior to using it.
Hey, Marine. Thanks for the tip about the garden hose screen, I'll try that out. I found that I have to backflush my filter with distilled water, prior to storing it over winter. The hard water where I live dried inside the filter and ruined it.
Thanks for info! I just wondering can i filter sea water or very dark coffe colour lake water, or small smelly river what goes in to the sea? I just have those options on places I camping. So this is safe use in all water reserves? I just been two night camping with my son, we took 13 liters water with us i had to take trolley to carry it. It was insane 13kg just in water, so i would be happy to use filter instead! I'm just little sceptical that i can use it my situation, most videos i see, backpackers using already cristal clear mountain streams or rivers to filter their water, but in my country rivers are brown same as lakes, some are yellow, and so on... what about small standing smelly pounds?
I have use this filter is some nasty bever ponds and lakes that were dark in color. The color will be clearer. But not crystal clear after filtering. But safe to drink. There will be a little taste to it. So for your son, I would get some of those little powder packs that has electrolytes in it for a sweet taste. Water is very heavy. This way you can lighten that load. Plus, you can tell your son that we are living off the land. Thank you Kristaps L for watching. I really appreciate it.
If the entire bag is submerged, won't bacteria or giardia get on the outside including the nozzle? Wouldn't that contaminate any water flowing from the nozzle?
Is it the 28mm thread on the cnoc bag that fits the filter without an adapter? Great, informative video by the way. Thanks Oh the clear hose for gravity feeding... is that 3/8 or 1/4
The filter fits the Cnoc bag without an adapter. The Sawyer filter connects by it's self. The inner diameter of the hose is 1/4. Thank you for watching Peter. I really appreciate it.
No. This dose not filter viruses. I was in Nepal ( Annapurna ) four or five years ago. Brought the water filter. But rarely used it. They sell bottle water all the way up, to right around Hill City. You don't have to worry about Viruses unless you are in town. The water run off is clear mountain snow melt. You are going to love Nepal. One of my favorite trips. I did a four part video of the trip.
Excellent as always. Here in eastern Nebraska I worry about agricultural chemical contamination, so I carry in my water, adds 7 lbs to my pack. How does Sawyer do in removing solutes like pesticides and herbicides? Would inline carbon filtration help? Thanks.
For cooking I need something that will filter more water. They make a bigger, liter size filter now but I have my heart set on the Sawyer Point One. Thanks again! I’m a new subscriber and am also interested in hammock camping so I’ll look through your previous posts for information and suggestions. So glad to have found your channel!
good show
Glad you enjoyed it. Thank you Paint Coach for watching. I really appreciate it.
Good video
Thank you Yesiutami for watching. I really appreciate it.
I'm one person I like this, I need a system for the house. Currently drink bottled water. What system do you recommend ? Afraid to drink city faucet water
I personally you a Brita water filter. And change the cartridges quite frequently. Thank you Susan for watching. I really appreciate it.
What a photo that would make 2:13 in. Standing by those rapids
Kevin, can you believe that waterfall is only 10 minutes from my house?
@@AdventureswiththeMarine Wow thats amazing
Great

“That’s a lot of nines” 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Thank you Albert for watching. I really appreciate it.
I have to get me a couple of those 3L bags Noah. Thank you for watching.

Best natural water I’ve ever had was while hiking in Patagonia, Chile. Drank straight from the streams. No filter needed. Best ever.
It sounds like it was spring feed. Which also make's it nice and cold. Thank you porridge57 for watching. I really appreciate it.
@@AdventureswiththeMarine It was indeed nice and cold. And I meant to say in my first comment…great video! I learned a lot!
Great information! Thanks!
Thank you for watching Richard. I really appreciate it.
Good 👍👍👍
Thank you Suryaginting for watching. I really appreciate it.
thanks Marine for your service and this good video..
Nice bro
Thank you Kidokidokidz for watching. I really appreciate it.
Great video. I couldn’t find the bootle adapter anywhere. Not even the company you mentioned. Please help
You can get them at REI. They are adaptors for the sawyer filter.
@@AdventureswiththeMarine thank you 🙏🏼
Nice

If you have a smartwater bottle with a sport cap, you don’t need anything else to back flush. The sport cap will fit directly on the Sawyer filter to back flush it.
Thank you Hiking to Change for sharing that. Good info.
Part of the reason I like my Gigerrig is because it's pressurised I just put the filter in like and blast all the water through it.
Thank you for sharing that Skyler Azzuolo. I really appreciate it.
Hey, Marine. Thanks for the tip about the garden hose screen, I'll try that out. I found that I have to backflush my filter with distilled water, prior to storing it over winter. The hard water where I live dried inside the filter and ruined it.
That is a great tip Poppy321. Thanks for sharing that sir.
No, The bag and the filter are separated when the bag is filled. Then the filter is attached to the bag.
The hose washer is a great idea. Do you notice any change in flow rate when it’s on? Great video!
Not at all. It flowed as if it were not on. I should have mention that. Thank you for watching Backpacking Adventures. I really appreciate it.

Is it the 28mm thread on the cnoc bag that fits the filter without an adapter? Great, informative video by the way. Thanks
Oh the clear hose for gravity feeding... is that 3/8 or 1/4
The filter fits the Cnoc bag without an adapter. The Sawyer filter connects by it's self. The inner diameter of the hose is 1/4.

SFMF! What about for international travel? I’m going hiking in Nepal next year. Will this filter viruses? Do I need to be concerned about that?
Thanks.
The basic Sawyer filters do NOT remove chemicals and heavy metals. Their bottle-based "Select" series has one level (S3) which claims to, though.
@@GrumpyGrunt thanks, will need to investigate that
