That cape malay curry is one of my all time favourite dishes! As a South African it has a special place in my heart! Thanks for sharing this one.
it's a super special dish 😋
The principle is the same for German Brathering, which is pickled fried whole herring; you can buy a tin in most German supermarkets, super delicious Summer meal simply served with potatoes.
It's not called cape Malay fish(that's its origin), In cape town its called pickle fish which we eat predominantly around Good Friday(this coming from an actual Cape Malay).
@@WoogieWP So what name would give me the best results for a recipe?
@@WoogieWPYou forgot the Hot Cross buns in the proper consumption of this special dish.
Every time I'm impressed by how little the boys listen to all the hints Ben drops. The insistence on chutney and tamarind in the first dish seemed like such gimmes.
Ebbers does call non indian jammy stuff chutney, quite often so it can be deceptive/
I love you guys so much, thank you for listening to us in the comments and making it 3 points! I mean, everything else about your content is amazing too. But thank you for taking feedback.
You're welcome! Thanks for providing the feedback too :)
You could make it 3k points and would Barry get it?! 😂
@@SortedFood This format needs some stakes for winning. Maybe loser has to eat something from the extreme spicy/sour/stinky/salty/bitter box?
P.S. Anyone else miss Fridge Cam?
@duriankia your right maybe take the points away and just do lowest total distance away. Its not swingy enuff
@@dolan-duk butt first 😂😂
Ohhh, that pickled fish is very traditional in South Africa during Easter weekend. But it is also enjoyed through the year. Recognized it immediately !!!
It's so delicious too!
You'd think after everything we've eaten around the world we'd of been way better at this 🤪
Thanks for having us lads, always a pleasure to be in the studio!
Bravo, boys!
What was the purpose of the blind fold? lol
Nah, the world is a big place and the amount of variation in food is almost endless. You never stand a chance.

Bit disappointed they didn't rename this series based on the suggestion of the last guest: "PLACE THE TASTE" just works so well. Besides that, another cracking and enjoyable video. can't wait for more!
If Beryl Shereshewsky is in town at any point, it would be fantastic to get her on this game!!!
Yeah, I bet she’d enjoy this! I actually already knew about the son-in-law eggs from her channel
Is that the actor that played Sherlock?
@@benhunt9303 nah you got her confused with Bubblegum Cucumberpatch 😂
@SortedFood @BerylShereshewsky
I would love to see Kush and the team planning and making these dishes (perhaps in a separate video). Some of them look amazing and I would love to see Sorted's take on making them.
Pickled fish - SA 🇿🇦 represent! Was so much fun watching the guys explain where they thought it was from 😂 many people forget the beautiful Malay influences in our country. Bobotie is another one that is iconic! And yes it also has bay leaves 😂
This show is so wholesome, educational, and just lovely to watch, from the US to the across the pond, thanks for making engaging and fun food content guys!
8:28 oh my word!!! What you called Cape Malay we call just plain ol' Pickled Fish and its on Sorted. Ah my dad loved that! My heart. Thank you. It's made in Cape Town especially around Easter and it is definitely all about the Curry. Enjoyed Cold and also copious amounts of Hot Cross Buns. So special.
So happy to see Pickled fish!! One of my favourite dishes and mostly eaten around easter in South Africa. 🙃
Thai basil is definitely not a typical topping for ไข่ลูกเขย here in Thailand. Coriander or sawtooth coriander only.
and they're not supposed to be spicy, right?
@@littlefirecracker1289They can be prepared spicy. Depends on the region. The south for example you'll find them mostly with chillies.
Bit about Farinata: very common in Argentina due to the huge Italian immigration. We know it as fainá and it's traditionally served with pizza (you put the fainá on top of the pizza). The key to make a tasty fainá is to use obscene amounts of olive oil and fry it in a really hot oven. It's usually served room temperature but on top of hot pizza
Food, the universal equalizer. World peace would be easily achieved if we all sat down together for an epic buffet with dishes from all around the world.
Wouldn't that be amazing?
There's so many different food restrictions that coordinating something like that would be a nightmare.
@@rayden54 That's the beauty of international foods. No meat, no problem, there are whole cuisines that are veg based and vegan friendly. No gluten....got your back with the rice noodles, rice etc. No diary, no problemo, soy milk on tap. As a traveller with insane food restrictions, I can say that when travelling around the globe, food restrictions do not have the same stigma that is unfortunately tagged to it by certain nations and/or peoples who choose not to be flexible and understanding 🤷🏽♀️
2:05 Kush is such a mood! I also always laugh! 😂😂😂😂😂😂
I want to know why they never take that as a cue. Kush laughs at them when they're very wrong.

Its ok bro. We both did terribly.
Hearthwarming and hilarious! We NEED more of Barry and Jesse! 😊😊😊😊😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
They're such a good duo.

Pickled fish…where is the hot cross buns 🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦
I can't believe they did dahi bhallay/dahi vada. I love dahi bhallay so muchhh.
3:27 I feel represented and also something I didn’t think people didn’t know lol
This was a great episode! The guest is personable and charismatic and the food looked delicious! Awesome! 😊
Similar to the last dish, in Nice in France you can buy Socca which is also only made with chickpea flour, water, salt and oil. It is absolutely delicious and i really recommend it !
I agree, it's one of my favorite snacks
Can't believe I got the pickled fish and farinata spot on. Perks of living in South Africa with Italian friends!
The pickled fish is commonly served in South Africa on Good Friday
My mother cooks Cape Malay fish every Easter (we just call it pickle fish).
She makes it a few days beforehand, and then we eat it on Good Friday. We like eating it with hot cross buns too
(tbh, I don't really like it because it's too vinegary for me. but the rest of the family loves it)
Add more sugar! Or apricot jam.
@@lynnettejohns4733 Oh, will try that next time
The Italian dish with the chickpeas reminds me of fava! Also if you did a desserts around the world then the Greek desert Ekmek would be an interesting option
I was convinced it was cheela - an Indian savoury pancake which is made of only chickpea flour and water. For a moment, I thought Jesse won that one.
I though Socca (french chickpea flatbread, very similar to farinata but baked instead of fried).
I thought it was something closer to Turkey or Greece.
Italy kinda makes sense though.
@@Flying-BunnyYou're completely correct to think it was socca. As farinata and socca (also called cecina in Tuscany and Fainè in Sardinia) are the exact same thing. The sorted guys got it slightly wrong when they said it was fried. It's almost always baked in very hot ovens.
@@evanthomas3778 yeah, cecina, in a black iron pan started on the stove top very hot with lots of oil, and then into the oven... ours is a little more thick and bread-y, with LOTS of stuff cooked INTO it - tomatoes, onions, peppers, meat, cheese, potato - mostly pre-cooked leftovers chopped up small, to make a second easy meal.
So good to see them enjoying Dahi Vada ;) And the 4th dish is also very similar to an Indian dish "Chilla" which is also a chickpea flour pancake but a bit thinner than this.
Do you know what bara is? If so is the lentill dough balls in this video that or is it different?
@gigian1000 Bara is the dough ball made from either chickpea flour or lentil flour. They are mixed with water, oil and spices and made into balls then fried till they are golden. Afterwards they are soaked in water to soften them up and then soaked in the yoghurt sauce so they get super oozy and moreish. Very good for vegans and very filling. Dahi Bara is very popular in Pakistan and the rest of South Asia.
Yeah it's similar to the one I know, we usually don't eat it like that tho just
@@gigian1000 Bara is VADA ...i think it means round or ball. Vada-Pav. Dahi-Vada. etc
I felt it was a thick chilla 😂
the farinata makes a fantastic pizza base for gluten free folks. i used to make it for a friend in a cast iron skillet and she was thrilled to be able to have something pizza like once again.
Suggestion for German street food: "Kesselsknall", which roughly translates to "kettle bang". The dish is an autumn dish that is mainly known in the Rhineland and is sold there, for example, at fairs. It used to be a poor man's meal for St. Martin's festival. It is made from potatoes, onions and smoked bacon and is traditionally eaten with applesauce.
We finally get to see Barry's brother!
😂 they do look very similar!
Hi boys! Not sure you've heard of it but there's a compamy called 'MOTATOS' which sells products that don't make it to supermarket shelves (due to packaging faults, over production, change in demand ETC) at a reduced price to help food waste and sustainability. As a challenge, could you do a 'pass it on' or 'chefs VS normals mystery box' challenge with random products from the site? They have a wide range of branded products from chocolates to passata so i think it could be a very interesting and fun way to promote sustainable shopping (non-spon). Love your content, can't wait for the wild weekender! 💜
This sounds super interesting! Thanks so much for letting us know and will we check it out :)
It's refreshing take on dahi vada being called khus-khus meatballs. Would never imagine it that way due to its connection to india.
Got the Cape Malay Fish immediately! Well done, looks perfect, and yes, it's a delicious dish
You guys are the best! Haven't missed a single video since 2013. Love from India!
Oh wow, that's super impressive! Thank you so much for your support 😁
@@SortedFoodYou guys deserve it!❤❤❤❤❤
That last one blew my mind. I had no idea. 😂
I have been eating son-in-law eggs since I was a kid and I have never seen it's served with fresh Thai basil before in Thailand. Normally it's served with fried challot and dried chille with cilantro as garnish. If you are going to use Thai basil in this dish, I suggest you try deep frying it first and it should go with this dish better than the fresh one.
We love curried fish in South Africa❤, finally something from SA on the show again!
I always love seeing South African dishes featured here!
Jesse saying the Italian dish was maybe Dutch just made me go "dude what, how??" 😂
extremely similar to the final dish, sicily has a street food called “panelle” which are chickpea patties, usually in rectangles, eaten on a roll with salt and lemon!! so good
It also reminded me of Cecina from Tuscany
I was convinced it was cheela - an Indian savoury pancake which is made of only chickpea flour and water. For a moment, I thought Jesse won that one.
@@giulia5184 It's the same dish according to wikipedia
@@ankaarneOh, that makes sense then. I've made it many times because it's so easy.

Always love to see South Africa represented, but I'm on the east coast in Durban. Local dishes would definitely have an Indian influence 🙂
I used to work with an Indian Aunty (born and grew up in India) who used to refer to Durban as the capital of India 😂
Oh that was slightly scary almost B1 and B2 😂😂😂 Barry 1, Barry 2. Thinking the same and looking a bit the same.
Thanks for another gem guys
I'd say it'd be cool if points were 3points for exact, 2 for bordering country, and 1 for just being closest
Love the change to 3 points for an exact answer! Keeps the competition a bit more interesting. If you wanted to add another layer, you could award those bonus 2 points if they happen to know the name of the dish as well?
Would love to see you guys try Ployes, its an Acadian dish originating in East Canada. Their amazing with a bit of butter and brown sugar or creton if you have it
The dutch influence on the pickled fish dish made so much sense to me since we Swedes have a very similar traditional dish served on Christmas eve. Always fun to learn about food that sometimes, when it comes to some countries, get overshadowed by "the big ones" that's always talked about and it just makes me happy for some reason.
You guys always make me happy 😊😊😊🥹🥹🥹🥹
i always love these videos bc i’m always so confident in my guess and then i’m extremely wrong
It would be amazing to see the boys try a german Mettbrötchen! I wonder how you would react to the cold raw pork spread with raw onions on a crusty white Brötchen (bun)... a german classic!
Pork in the UK isn’t safe enough I don’t think.
@@parsnip1 hm yeah that would be a problem. Maybe pork from a trusted high quality butcher?
@@marcdieparty-karrotte692 I think you just can’t in the UK. Germany has much stricter rules. I suspect even high-quality pork still carries a significant health risk. I wouldn’t even eat it rare, let alone raw.
@@parsnip1 ok thats understandable. Too bad tho, i imagine their reaction would be quite hilarious. Ist such a weird (yet delicious) concept of a dish
A suggestion for a dish: sweet lokša, which are smeared with jam, rolled up like pancakes and sprinkled with poppy seeds, and sugar, sometimes also poured over melted butter or salty lokša which are spread with lard (preferably goose) or filled with sauerkraut or minced meat.
wow, at the start of the video I thought to myself, "Wow, they got two Barrys" cause they gave off the exact same energy, had similar facial hair and hairstyles... and then two guesses went by and I was like, "WOW, THEY GOT TWO BARRYS"
Love playing along at home, had a boring day of life admin so this is my prize for doing it all 😂
Excited for this!
I just saw the guys are in Dallas RIGHT NOW and I'm half tempted to drive down and just search the city for them (I'm an hour away). Cannot wait for the inevitable video(s) that come from this trip.
These are always so fun and interesting! Can't wait to relax with this video!
Love these videos!
Had a good giggle at Barry and Will getting the Pickled Fish wrong. It truly is a much beloved dish in Cape Town and was something my family ate as a part of our Good Friday meal. Special memories! Thanks for sharing it with the wider Sorted audience!
I was so sure that the 4th dish is from Central America, Guatemala or Honduras or Nicaragua. I would never have guessed Italy. Its a great game, and I like it when you have visitors.
I was convinced it was cheela - an Indian savoury pancake which is made of only chickpea flour and water. For a moment, I thought Jesse won that one.
@@sweetysavvy I was also thinking that this might be from India or Pakistan, because I had similar bread there before. But I thought - India was already a dish, and also Thailand, so it must be from another continent.
I hardly ever see the "son in law eggs" as a street food dish in Thailand. One of my favorites and my husband makes it for me. 😋
Love all your content guys! Havent miss a video in years! Much love abd support from Colombia! You should do a video in our cousine! 💛💙❤️
Would love to see a dessert version of this! (And then you could finally do canada🇨🇦)
My guesses were
Bangladesh
Thailand
Mozambique
Turkey
So either way not bad for me,.considering I've not travelled to any of those places hehe
Nice to see collabs on this fun format. Fun video!
I really enjoyed this video it really seems like the team dove deep into these countries cuisine i had never heard of any of these dishes or anything similar to them
in denmark we do put jam on pancakes yes but the batter is made with Wheat flour, egg, milk somtimes a bit of beer in there aswell. :)
that deep fried fish which is then made soggy in a pickle is also somewhat common in Poland, usually see it around winter holidays
Great episode, thank you folks :)
new guy! i guessed Sri Lanka. close., thailand. spot on. Brazil. just an ocean in the way. and got Italy! for the win!
Suggestion for a Challenge: Cooking well seasoned, bold flavors without using ANY type of Capsaicin . (the active component of chili peppers) No Scotch Bonnets, no poblanos, no chili flakes,no Shishito Pepper and no green bell peppers (Capsicums). I have a Capsaicin sensitivity. Which means that grocery store bottled MILD Salsa is too painful for me to eat more that two chips worth. Lately, when any item on a menu says bold flavors it means Capsaicin . A lot of places do not list whether or not there is Capsaicin in the dish. So many places have ruined my meal by not disclosing the one jalapeno in the whole batch that most people experience as flavor and I experience as pain. The more I am exposed to Capsaicin the more likely I am to developing an allergy. SO, could the guys cook up a series of meals that are just as awesome as the hot stuff without using Capsaicin?
Ok I am adopting Ben's pronunciation of Dahi Vada.. - Daivaada!
It's "Die Gone Ally" all over again
All of these dishes looked amazing! I agree with the change to the point system, makes it a closer game if someone guess the correct country
Always interesting watching the guys try to reason about a dish that you already know!
Bring it on lads!! Such a pleasure meeting the @topjaw guys Jesse and Will!
4:47 Burnt tang. Omg I have been waiting for this word for a while 😂
I would love to see you try some swedish dishes sometime, Like Raggmunk (A type of potato pancake eaten with pork) Or White Kroppkakor (Pork filled potato dumplings eaten with lingon and melted butter and a white sauce) Two very good dishes.
For the last round Jesse ain't wrong to be fair. There is an Indian crepe like dish called Chilla which can be made with Chickpea flour. It normally is served with chutney or stuffed with veggies.
When Jesse said, "That's so annoying," he sounded like Barry in pass it on
5:20 damn!- I’m on fire!- as soon as I saw those eggs, I thought “Thailand -“Son-in-law” eggs!”……….never tired them/ I just watch A LOT of Thai cooking videos lol (I also guessed India for the first dish due to ingredients………somethings going on this week- usually I suck at this game!🤷♀️🥰👍🏻😂
I had the Niçoise/Nissart version of farinata recently, they call it socca - massive chickpea pancakes traditionally cooked in a wood fired oven to get a nice char like a pizza crust
Another guest that brings great energy. He and Barry matched very well. Thank you for the farinata recipe - I am definitely going to try it out.
I've been loving all of these collabs! Would really love to see a more diverse group of guests in the future though!
So proud to have my country featured lol. Pickled fish is traditionally made at easter time
For the last one I guessed Italy because my family is Italian and we used to make something called “St. Joseph day cookies” and they were ground up chickpeas, Hersheys chocolate, black pepper, red wine and some other stuff I can’t remember, and then you stuff that mixture into a sweet dough and deep fry them, they were great lol and so unique
In india especially the south western region we have a sweet dish named Puran Poli which looks a lil similar to Farinata. It consists of split chickpea cooked till mush and then sweetened with sugar or jaggery along with some spices like cardomom, nutmeg n sometimes ginger. This feeling is then stuffed in dough of either whole wheat flour or all purpose flour whole wheat or a mix of both and then rolled out flat and roasted with lots of ghee and served hot. It's either eaten as it as or with more drizzle of ghee or some sweetened milk. It's an auspicious dish mainly made on festivals.
love the episode!!
I'm glad to see Pickled Fish made it on to the show! Great stuff that!
Barry and New Barry thinking exactly the same twice in a row is hilarious.
The South African dish resembles a Danish dish quite much. "Fried herring" is battered, fried, and brined with onion, just like this one.
Happy on all levels. As a Cape Townian fan of Sorted and Topjaw, it's great to see you collaborate AND guess a dish from Cape town! Great ep.
That Cape Malay reminds me on the German Dish „Brathering“. It is very similar with the ingredients.
The last one is also from Nice, France and is called Socca
The description of the dumplings in the Indian dish reminded me of vada, a deep-fried savory doughnut made with (probably) chickpea flour. I love chickpea flour but thought the vada was pointless.
Fortunately, I took leftovers home with me. The vada was in a container with a thin tamarind soup. The next day, I discovered that the vada had soaked up most of the soup and become a delicious vegetarian cutlet.
So be sure to soak your vada!
Love these
I'm confused what the blindfolds are for if they immediately take them off 😂
I’m guessing it’s to get that first reaction on camera.
Yes for dahi vada! One of my favorite dishes. In the South of India the yogurt is flavored with tempered chilis and lentils (same as the coconut chutney you made w/Karan) and served with the same sauces. The vadas are made purely with lentils (black gram).
Farinata is known in Uruguay as FAINÁ and it's VERY popular. You usually serve this and pizza
I have a Thai friend that cooked me those eggs. They are sublime.
