Autel Evo 2 Pro vs DJI Mavic 2 Pro - Drone Video Comparison - 4K DLOG 10bit 30fps ND8

  • This is a Drone Video Comparison test between my brand new Autel Evo 2 Pro and the DJI Mavic 2 Pro. Although the Evo 2 Pro can shoot 4K 60fps as well as 6K 30fps, this test is using 4K DLOG 10 bit 30fps to keep it fair for the DJI Mavic 2 Pro as this is the maximum the DJI can record in.
    It was a very windy, overcast day at Westgate Park in Melbourne. I manually set the camera on both drones to 4K 30fps DLOG, ISO 100, 30fps, shutter 1/60 and I adjusted the EV on both to fine tune exposure (used ND8 filter on both). I used manual focus on the Mavic 2 Pro since autofocus doesn't work properly however on the Evo 2 Pro I left autofocus on.
    I used Davinci Resolve to make this video and I used the DJI and Autel supplied DLOG LUTs and the same minor colour and contrast changes on both. The DJI DLOG footage required the usual distortion correction setting in Davinci Resolve and it was nice that I didn't need to fix distortion in the Autel footage. I set the Project settings to 3840 x 2160 30fps as the Autel records in 30fps. The DJI records in 29.97fps so there may be a slight issue with the DJI smoothness due to the differences in frame rate. The final edit was rendered in 4K H.264 for use in UA-cam.
    Overall I think the Autel had the clearest footage and the colours popped even though it was a dull, overcast day. However I think I should have picked a better white balance on the Evo. I will fix it on my next video.
    I did notice that the Mavic 2 Pro horizon level was affected by the strong wind whereas the Autel Evo 2 Pro didn't appear to have the same issue or not as much. Probably because the Autel is a bigger, heavier drone.
    My initial reaction is that the Autel Evo 2 Pro is superior to Mavic 2 Pro due to being a bigger drone, longer flight time, better crash avoidance features and a better camera. I also prefer the Autel controller/phone setup and its colour display is a nice touch. However the Mavic 2 Pro seems to be more stable during flight as the Evo sometimes moves a little bit by itself. Autel forums say Autel are improving the software for compass calibration.
    UPDATE 1: one day later and I have now updated the Evo software in the drone, controller and Android app to the latest Beta version from the Evo website and followed the new compass calibration method and the Evo stability is now great. I flew it tonight in strong winds and it was 100% stable and consistent with no unexpected movements.
    UPDATE 2: On the following day I flew in strong cross winds and I noticed that it would drift ever so slightly with the wind. It doesn't impact flying but it does impact the camera. Hopefully they will fix it in a future update as it is almost there.
    I will cautiously fly the Autel until I know everything about it. I just hope that it can be as reliable and predictable as the DJI Mavic 2 Pro. Technology always gets better and I am looking forward to DJI releasing a new drone that is even better than the Mavic 2 Pro and Evo 2 Pro.
    In the meantime here are the links to the best pro-consumer drones available today (in my opinion):

    Safety: Please note that I flew safely and within the drone flight rules. I check for other aircraft and stay low (tree top height) or land if there are low aircraft nearby, otherwise no higher than 120m and no closer than 5.5km to a controlled airport, no closer than 30m to people, no flights over people or crowds, keep the drone in line of site and controlled safely, no flights at night. Both drones produce excellent images. However, I think that the EVO II Pro shots have better dynamic range, color and detail. However, the EVO II Pro images are a bit over sharpened. Thankfully, sharpness can be dialed down in the Style menu. Thanks for making and posting this comparison.

      Thanks so much, I agree with you. I actually had -1 sharpness in the Evo settings as I saw a video suggesting it. I am so used to seeing Mavic 2 Pro footage it has been a shock to see the Evo footage. It is so much clearer. Happy flying :)

    Hi Gizmo, a very nice test and video compare video. I really like to watch this kind of video, but I find it difficult to make a good comparison when the videos from both drones are shown consecutively. With the right video program, the image can often be split into two screens so that the recordings can be compared directly with each other. Maybe a tip for future "compare" videos. Thanks for sharing. Greetings from the Netherlands.

    Well mate, I have to go with the Mavic. The picture was a lot more natural. The Evo seems to blow the colours out, the sky looked a little funky and the reds near the water were blown as well. Could pull some of that back in post I guess although I haven't played with the footage from the Evo. Nice raw comparison mate. The 2 cameras are chalk and cheese. Cheers Brett

    Interesting footage comparison. I found my Mavic 2 Pro to be washed out more, not because of the DLog, just overall the EVO II captures more vibrance IMO. Overall I find the EVO II Pro to be amazing at capturing vibrant colors, especially when de-fog is used. Chasing the fall colors in Colorado this year, I ended up using the EVO II Pro 90% of the time due to the amazingly vibrant colors it could capture. I am only keeping my M2P now for features like Landscape, Panoramic, and other automated features like hyperlapse w/tracking. Otherwise, the Autel EVO II Pro is a beast, the more updates they come out with the more this is becoming the "drone to own" IMO. I want to get the 8k gimbal and compare images.

      Thanks so much for your comment. I have come to the same conclusion. The Evo has really clear and colourful footage and I like it. I haven't flown my M2P since although I know I will eventually. I have just worked out how to edit the Evo's colours and I will upload a new video in a few hours. Basically use DLOG, use the Autel LUT, tweak white balance and contrast and that's it. I had to boost the M2P colours but not Evo. It is already colourful. I will check out your videos. Cheers

    I'd Love to see them both in 10-Bit D-Log and see if we can tell the difference? Autel has it's attraction for me because of it's freedom from DJI. If the 10 Bit is good, I'm in !!

    • @GizmoDrones
      @GizmoDrones  3 роки тому

      Actually I shot both in 10bit DLOG H265 and I used the Autel and DJI LUTS with just some minor improvements for both. I had to render in H264 for UA-cam. Evo doesn't have distortion like you do with the Mavic. The Mavic is slightly easier to control but it could be that the Evo is new to me. Autel are still tweaking their flight control. I am using their Beta software and it is better than their latest release. I like the digital zoom in the Evo and 2x zoom doesn't affect the 4K quality very much as it is a 6K camera. I have flown it a couple time since and will upload another video shortly which will include zoom footage. Cheers

    When you examine it in a large 4K TV, Evo blows DJI out of the water when it comes to capturing details, especially in the clouds (likely because dynamic range also plays into it). The only issue is that type of detail will only be appreciated with the right monitor/TV. It really depends on what device they are watching it in. One issue I noticed with Evo is that is creates strange pixelations that look like noise around tight spaces and edges, look closely at the edge of the flag. DJI seems to have some type of software noise reduction that gets rid of that. Outside of that, I think Evo is the superior drone for capturing a scene in full detail.

    The Autel Evo 2 Pro takes far better video, with superior colours and dynamic range.
    This is to be expected given the Mavic 2 Pro has always had a lineskipping (compression) issue when capturing 4K video, and is a known hardware fault with the Mavic 2 Pro.

      Thanks so much for your comments. This was my first Evo flight and I have since worked out how to get the best out of the Evo camera. From memory I did use ND filters on both but I may have overexposed the Evo a little bit based on my experience with the Mavic. The Evo is more light sensitive and needs to be dialed down a bit more. Please check one or two of my latest videos to see. Cheers

    • @GizmoDrones
      @GizmoDrones  3 роки тому

      I believe there are 2 Autel resellers in Australia but I chose to order from eBay and it came from the U.S. in around 2 weeks and I saved around $1000. I am a careful flyer so I hope I don't need to repair it. I haven't had to repair my DJI drones ever. I did notice that some spare parts like the case are orderable over the internet. But I do know what you mean and that is why I have kept my Mavic 2 Pro in case I need a backup drone (I have a Mini 1 and 2 plus other drones) , athough I haven't flown the Mavic since getting the Evo. I have bought an extra battery from Camzilla and eBay (4 batteries now) and ND filters from Camzilla. If you are not a regular flyer then I would stick with DJI as they have models for everyone. I was looking to go to the next level and I didn't want the Phantom. Cheers

    • @GizmoDrones
      @GizmoDrones  3 роки тому

      That's a great question. You are exactly right. My initial impression was that the M2P was much more stable as the E2P would drift or turn very slightly. However yesterday I installed the latest Beta software on the drone, controller and Android app and after that the Evo was 100% stable even in strong wind. I flew it for 1 hour last night in a very windy location and it was rock solid, just as stable as the Mavic. Of course time will tell but I was relieved after I installed the Beta software. The main difference is that the new software has a 3 axis compass calibration where the original software was 2 axis (same as Mavic). I found the Evo stability flying option (like tripod) was really good. I could do very fine control in strong winds. It was 100% predictable and I was really impressed considering the winds were at least 20-30Km/h or 12-19mph.

      Thanks so much, I agree with you. I am so used to seeing my Mavic 2 Pro footage it has been a shock to see the Evo footage. It is so much better. Happy flying :)
