  • In this video we follow the progress of the climbing rose from our Climbing Rose Pruning Video. You may notice some spent blooms on the vine, these can be pruned out so that the new blooms look better. After this first flush of bloom (because this is a repeat blooming rose-it will push new growth and have another bloom cycle) prune all the stems that have finished flowering down to two nodes. Thanks for watching! -mary

I've been growing roses for 50 years, but I had no idea how to prune climbing roses. Using what I've learned here I'm sure I'll get great spring booms and repeat blooms all season long.

How long did it take for them to bloom once you planted them?

Thank you for posting Shani. Most young roses will bloom their first year but depending upon how many stems they have the blooms will not be as prolific as when the rose is older with more stems. The key with a climbing rose is to allow new, well placed, stems to grow instead of cutting them all off like I see sometimes. And gently bending those leaders will get you even more blooms. If you let it grow straight up they tend to bloom only at the tips. Let us know how it goes! -mary

It would have been helpful to see you actually cut the rose so I knew what you were speaking about. Its the point of videos really. The noise was not optimal either. As a novice rose gardener I am finding it extremely frustrating to find videos that are asking me to use knowledge I don't have yet to understand.. Something to bear in mind if you are providing a tutorial perhaps.

P.S. It would help the novice gardener most to start by watching The Gardening Tutor video: How to make healthy pruning cuts ua-cam.com/video/6gYlVP6Qm3Y/v-deo.html and then watch the 3 part How to prune a hybrid tea rose: ua-cam.com/video/F59VqjFMkkQ/v-deo.html All the information will build your confidence for pruning roses. -mary
