    You really DO need a vapour barrier if your going to cold ( ish )climates ! That is why you have seen rust forming on the inside of the bottom of the sill's. Thats condensation that has formed and accumilated sat and started rusting. If you want to keep the van for many years rust free. This is really needed. If your putting in insulation then a vapour barrier needs to go over the top of the insulation. This helps to keep the insulation dry and also reduces the amount of condensation building up in the van. without the vapour barrier you will end up with a load more condensation forming even with good venilation. Not good. it isnt that difficult to put in over the top. Just use foil backed bubblewrap and seal the edges with alloy sticky tape. I'm sure you know the process. Good Luck ! from Mr Anal

      @@theexPAWers Everything John has said I would strongly concur. The rust in the bottom is definitely due to condensation running down the inside of the walls. Simply Hammeriting it isn't going to stop the problem. You need to remove the paint to expose all the rust and treat it with rust converter, which will chemically convert it back to metal and inhibit rust in the future. Unfortunately, once its taken hold, it will come back so you need to keep an eye on it or it will become VERY expensive. You're probably going to be pretty ok if you're staying in warm climates, but as you spend quite a bit of time in Northern climes, I'd do it properly. 😁😁😁

      Problem with a lot of secondhand van that have been used commercially like delivering fish meat. They get washed out with a hose pipe and the floor and the lower sills, fill up with water and never dry out. That’ll be where the rush has come from.. the air is a lot dryer down there Spain and Portugal, the sunny place you normally go so you shouldn’t have a problem with damp.

      If you have a wood burner you don't get condensation and that hideous toilet come shower is a real obstacle which can be reduced right down by following Ame and her parents vans. Her Mum and Dad's shower design and function is nothing short of brilliance. MidlifeVanlife. Top people.

      Hi Nic & Sahra , loving watching your van build series you are obviously very intelligent and talented people and whatever you do with your van l'm sure it will all work out fine . I know how you both love colour , and one way of making your van full of colour and also making it lighter , l have noticed you have thick solid doors on your cupboards , have you thought of cutting the centre out leaving a frame and stapling fabric onto the back giving you your own bespoke cupboard doors . Happy Van Building ! 🥳🤙

    👍🏻 self imposed deadlines are okay. Social media opinion deadlines are not, ignore them. You’ve taken on a large multi-dimensional task, it takes A Lot to get it right. I say, slow down, breathe, think, measure again, then go for it.
    You are right when you say there’s a million decisions, everyday, and they affect everything down the line. Using a layout is smart. stand in it. move in it. how does it feel & flow ? When I did mine I put the layout on the floor with painters tape, before building & installing the cabinets, it helped in several re-considerations.
    Remember ……It doesn’t need to be perfect, it just needs to feel right. You got this ! 🙏😄
    Don’t forget to …..Enjoy the process. 👍🏻❤️👍🏻😁

    Easiest decision you will have to make. Ventilation is your friend while you have two dogs in the new van - you don't need a vapour barrier. The van has done 12 years in northern Europe without one, much of that time as a fish van and you can see how it is.

    Hey guys! Great idea to toss the bulkhead! I was hoping you'd reconsider. I like the layout except for the bathroom, which I would locate next to the closet and right at the back door, floor to ceiling. Every build that I've seen with 1/2 bath that converts to shower gets so old so fast. Think back to how great it felt to use a proper toilet when you first got the van. And unless the wheel wells are in the way, you can use the bottom of the closet to slide the toilet into. OR....locate the bath next to the closet but forward of it, then the sink, then the couch. You can add a flip up extension to the sink for the extra counter space you mentioned.

    • @theexPAWers
      @theexPAWers  4 місяці тому +3

      We’ll play around with the layout again tomorrow, it was nice having a proper loo room for sure! Not sure if we can move the bathroom though as the water tank is under the sink area/back left of the van🫣

    Sarah, Nick, I perhaps would have elaborated a tad more on the what you can do with Waxoyl.
    The sills you are currently treating, it would be advantageous to spray or brush a healthy coating inside those repaired sills, once waxoyl’d they will not give you any further issues. Vehicles flex, rain/water gets in places it shouldn’t, & does its worst, ie the rust you see. As you say, it’s great for the underside also, in the box sections, wipe a healthy coat over your springs & spring assisters, if you still intend to fit said items. Just coat everything likely to get rain on it! Just not on your brake discs or, she’s stop like a supertanker 😢

    Bye Bye bulkhead, hurray 🎉🥳👏. Well done for treating the rust in the side panels. You understand the rust has formed due to the vapour generated inside the body condensing on the colder skin of the van and running down into the well of the Sill. This will happen in most European environments, so you either need to fit a vapour barrier ( see Greg Virgo's video on this), or do a really good job of painting the inside of the sill, and provide an effective drain to let the gathered water out; but this brings additional problems with insects finding a great place to shack up and get free transport across the continent, so don't leave the bungs and grommets out of the Sills. Just poke a hole in the grommets to allow the moisture to seep out. Either way, it's a great video, and very entertaining, cheers. 👋

    • @alanhat5252
      @alanhat5252 4 місяці тому

      Thanks for the message Geoff.. We think the gutters were rusty from
      It being a fish transport van up in Sweden for 10 years before F&E took it over rather than condensation running down the walls, anyway, we’ve got some waxoyl on the way to treat it with that aswell as what we’ve used already! 😅

    2:44 rust!!
    Deal with it now while you can get to it!
    Hammerite is an excellent sealer & topcoat but it's *_not_* a _cure_ for rust!
    My favourite is phosphoric acid (1 part acid in 9 or 10 parts soapy water), brush it on & keep it wet with your brush till you're thoroughly bored then rinse it off & dry thoroughly (hairdryer maybe to finish), then zinc chromate & zinc phosphate primer (as used in the factory), *then* your Hammerite.
    Also, that looks like puddles so you should consider putting drains through. Drill holes, rust-proof, then drop in something that's going to rattle around a bit to keep the hole clear - plastic cable tidy, split-pin, anything that will last & not fall through.

    • @alanhat5252
      @alanhat5252 4 місяці тому

      7:56 Curust (cure-rust) is good, it's got phosphoric acid in it.
      (If it's not thoroughly dry when you put the topcoat on you'll get interesting black patterns on the surface).

    • @alanhat5252
      @alanhat5252 4 місяці тому

      When vehicles are made they dip the whole bodyshell in paint, the bungs are to let excess paint out but they're almost certainly also in the right place to let out the condensation that's been trapped in there before (no vapour barrier) & rusted the panels.
      Just make sure you put anti-spray mudflaps on all 4 wheels so nothing comes up from below, you can find them on the side of the road where they've fallen off lorries. A lorry one is big enough to cut into 4 to fit yours.

    • @alanhat5252
      @alanhat5252 4 місяці тому

      if you can't find proper anti-spray mudflaps 2 Astroturf doormats cut in half will last till you find one, they _are_ available in black if you look around.

Ill send you some pics of my mwb peugeot ive been living in for 4 years. Although you have an idea of your layout now im pretty certain my layout would suit you both better. But thats my opinion. Ide love to have your sized van. Maybe this year I'll upgrade. Much love x

    Weight, there is a specification for axle's front and rear, nothing to do with guns n roses ok, you will have to find a public weigh bridge, its cheap. camera man its called team work, setting a time frame is good, but dont break yourself's . its a guide, not set in stone, thing happen. Take care you two...

    Hi Nick and Sarah, I've just seen your latest vlog👍 well done, I do understand that nothing ever goes quickly, just the simplest of things like shopping for building supplies and they haven't got it in😫
    Brilliant idea to leave the holes where the rushed had gathered you don't need those rubbers totally agree with what you've done👍 I'm sure it's going to be amazing when finished. I'm looking forward to next Thursday👍 love you guys, keep up the good work, guys. Cheers Steve from wet Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 🌧 but getting dryer but cold🥶

      I'm disappointed. I know Nick and he's super positive. So why have a thumbnail with "Is this even possible" and nail biting. I know UA-cam advises you to go for clickbait as it's proven to get more hits. Sod them. A positive outlook would be a thumbnail with "We're going to smash this. Happy days here we come" and the two of them giving thumbs up.

I cant wait to see the finish. Im not qualified to give building advice, but l remember you being excited about the shower and toilet you put in, maybe have a think about that again. It's probably too late, but you really should thing about the vapor barrier. The condensation running down the walls is likely contributing to your rust problem.

    • @theexPAWers
      @theexPAWers  4 місяці тому +1

      The rust in the gutters is from when the van was a fish transport van we think more so.. No one has really lived in this van fulltime to cause that much rust from condensation 😅

    good luck - take your time - vapour barrier & ventilation for the win - don't forget to tip some waxoyl or some such in that cavity you just rust treated - also stuff some insulation in the pillars and frame cavities. Good stuff keep it coming 👍

    You could cover the walls with plastic sheets if that available there, if you are able to seal every crack, it will also work as a vapor barrier.
    And you can cover the plastic with wallpaper, which you also can do with the plywood.
    If you change the thick doors on the cupboards to thin sliding doors, you will be able to make it even lighter, then you can use fabric or plastic drawers for keeping stuff in their place.
    Looking forward to see how it turns out.
    I love that you are doing a different layout than others, by obstructing the view, yes it seems "smaller", but you also gain the feeling of having several different rooms, which again makes it feel bigger.
    I was thinking, with the old layout, you could have used the door to block the walkway, by doing so, also gain a bigger bathroom while in use.
    If you can imagine what I'm portraying. 😊
    If you ever get some land, you can pension Vinster there as a "house" until you get something built, and then as a guesthouse.
    He can still do a great job, without going down roads.. 😉

      Thanks so much for the feedback and yes, that’s what we thought with Vinny, just need him to last long enough for us to find the right plot of land!! 😅.. Hlad you like the layout we’re thinking x
