    Ireland has got a tough draw. Playing Aus and Sam Kerr first at their home, and then a dangerous Canada team. The USA is obviously the favorite, but they ARE vulnerable with some significant injuries. They are also the deepest player pool in the world and 4 stars on their kit. Interesting to see how it plays out with Vlatko's squad.

      I remember in 2019 a lot of people outside of the US knew our players individually along with the team of course, we had built a core group for many years. This year we’re bringing in 14 new players so to speak and the European media is more focus on their players who they see often. As a U.S. fan I don’t really follow European Women club soccer players but know people like Kerr and some of the other top players who we’ve encountered in the past. I know more French, German, English, Swedish, Dutch, Australian players than say Spain, Denmark, Norway, Italian, etc.
      I can see why they’ll be high on their players who they see far often and that level of competition. Sophia smith wasn’t even considered by FIFA as a top player, which is ridiculous but they just don’t know I guess.

       @bluecalix That's my whole point, nobody's clocking Brazil properly. Yet you just have to take the time to watch the players they have got playing in the top leagues of Europe and the USA to see how influential they are.
      Kerolin and Debinha (alongside Sophia Smith) are the most skilled, stand-out players in the American NWSL. Not forgetting Adriana and Marta at Orlando Pride and 21-year-old Bruninha at New York Gotham FC. In Europe, you have Geyse at Barcelona, Rafaelle at Arsenal and Kathellen at Real Madrid.
      Whether you are familiar with them or not, all these players regularly register standout performances at their respective clubs. Whenever you see them play you are quickly reminded why it is that Brazil produces so many of the fastest, most skillful players in world football. In other words, you are reminded that Brazil are the most celebrated football nation for good reason.
      In their recent away victory over Germany (who surprisingly they had only beaten once before), Brazil was dominant and dominant in the way you would expect of a talented Brazilian team.
      So I repeat, Spain does not have better players, and neither do the bookie's favorites England, Germany, or the USA. Its easy not to see how strong Brazilian teams are (and have always been) when they consistently fail to win anything. It's only when the Brazil women starts winning major tournaments (like the men have done) that people and pundits are going to be reawakened to the facts I have highlighted here.

      Two years is a long time, and we see how there is a need to evolve and adapt. Williamson, if fit, is in the team all day long, absolutely.

    Brazil are favourites for me. Defensively so good. Second half against England they technically adapted superbly. I don’t think England can win it without Mead, Kirby and Williamson sadly and I think teams have worked out Keira Walsh bossing our midfield alone. Sarina doesn’t seem to rate Kelly as a starter which is a shame imho. I fancied Germany but pre tournament been a bit underwhelmed. Their keeper is the best in the world imho. Spain could win it but I don’t want them to for the awful coach. USA don’t really fancy this time though Smith is a baller. Australia have a good chance but not impressed with Arnold in goal against France, flappy.

    • @martinladley
      @martinladley 10 місяців тому +1

      Definitely Brazil are improving at a faster rate than other top teams. Germany over Spain as the Spanish seem to lack the clinical finish. Without Williamson, particularly, England are weaker.
      I agree that Kelly should be a starter, although we have to recognise the nature of the game as being a genuine squad game.
      Just can't bear the thought of the Yanks making it a treble, which is why I think England will win a dream final against the USA, as they will be so motivated for that match. And the Aussies, well, as hosts with Kerr , they can go far just on that vibe alone.
      What would be your starting XI, with options ? Daly's resurgence has been amazing, she is such a legend, already. Hemp has got some great natural ability which has yet to fully bloom, but with an array of great technical, attacking, talents; James, Russo, Toone, Kelly, there is much optimism for this Mother of all Tournaments.
      Can't wait. Last one was something else, let's hope we get this one over the line. Epic, which ever way it goes. Great to see the game and the World Cup, especially, just grow so well.

      @@martinladley really not sure! Biggest issues are left back and 10. Any of the 9s work for me but I think Tooney is out of form. I would prefer Earps, Bronze, Charles or Carter, Bright, Greenwood, Walsh, Stanway, Hemp, Kelly, James at 10 possibly and Daly. I’d keep Toone and Russo for impact. OR Toone and Russo with James on the right side and Kelly as impact sub with Russo at 9. OR I’d play Stanway at 10 and Zelem or Nobbs with Walsh 😃

    • @martinladley
      @martinladley 10 місяців тому

      @@jophillips8230 Same. Lots of options, that is for sure. From the quarter finals on ( surely we will get there at least) we will see the team develop. Is there enough genuine fluidity within the ranks ? Toone out of form , but could easily spark once the big games come.
      You definitely know more than me about the current form of the squad. Glad to see Knobbs in there. I'd have Greenwood at L/B, with Charles or Carter at C/B. But then I'd could envisage all five at the back with Bronze and G'wood on the flanks ?
      Zelem deserves her chance to shine, but I'm a big fan of Charles and reckon she's a bit like Daly when she was considered a utility player; Charles could play in multiple positions and I'd love to see her challenge Walsh. That's just my take.
      We could definitely see the boss starting Hemp, Kelly, Daly, James and Russo against Haiti ?
      It's a greater challenge than the Euros, no doubt, but our recent record in World Cups tells me we are still getting better, although the 2019 semi was one of the greatest games ever,
      Belief and humility will be accompanying us on this great Aussie show.

      I think there was a similar hype around Lauren Hemp before the Euro, and whilst she played okay during the tournament, she certainly didn't have the output many expected her to have. I think it was a combination of players banking up against her, and also her being young and inexperienced in big tournaments. The only positive is that when players bank up against one player, it leaves space for others players, so even if the same thing happens to Lauren James, it could leave space for players like Russo, Toone, and Daly to capitalise. So this was your chance to be the leader one stop spot for WWC Previews and talk but you blew it. It’s very scatter brained and not organized. Go Group by Group like they would with the Men and preview each team and who you think you will make it through each group and why then preview the knockout stages until you each pick a winner. Everyone keeps talking about the USWNT, England, Spain, and Germany as favorites to win the world cup and that might be the case, but when the WC kicks off on the 20th of July, none of the 32 teams will be able to field a better, more skillful crop of players than Brazil. In that regards it's business as usual. Brazil even in the women's game still produces the best players.
    If they get the bit between the teeth they will even remind the likes of Spain just who the real ballers of the beautiful game are.
    For some strange reason, they have never won a major title because they never seem to be able to get it together on the biggest stage as the men have done. But the skill and ability is there and has always been there.
    Mark my words, if former USWNT manager Pia Sundhage can get it into the Brazilian player's heads that it is their name on the trophy, they will be the winners of the biggest-ever women's international sporting event. In fact, no other major women's event (sporting or otherwise) will have come anywhere close to receiving the level of interest, publicity, and promotion that the coming 2023 WWC is about to receive.

It's never because they don't have the strength in depth to go deep like a lot of the other teams that are not really expected to go on and win the competition. In other words, Brazil always turns up with the requisite talent pool of quick, highly gifted individuals that we have come to expect from them, they just have yet to figure out how to put it all together.
      If the Swedish-born Brazilian and former USWNT manager Pia Sundhaguer can figure out how to find and then flick that particular switch on, then it's lights out for the rest, because Brazil have the players to do it and more to my point, they have always had the players to do it, they just DONT!!... for some inexplicable reason.
