  • Official Reggae History: Father Festus Coxsone Exclusive Interview UNCUT Live
Festus Coxsone starts to play in Jamaica at the age of thirteen, and for that reason, he has the proper knowledge of black music from R&B, Ska, Rocksteady, and Rubadub to the original roots of Reggae.
In 1963 he played alongside Lady May Sound System, in one of the most popular dancehall venues at the time, called Leath Hall in Saint Thomas and ran sessions around artists such as Prince Buster Sound System, Count Nick Sound System, and Canary Sound System.
On 17 April 65 came to England and just the day after he met Lloyd, and they started Lloyd the Mathador Sound System running until ’68, the same years of Legendary Sound as Duke Lee, Neville Musical, Enchanter, Duke Reid, Sir Fans-D. (Fatman), Gee from North.
September ‘68 Sir Coxsone Sound System started with 3 people where involved at the time: Glen Marshalleck, Loydie & Festus the original founders. First Clash ran in the same year 1968 in Alladise Hall of Acer Lane in Duces Street, with his special tune dubplate done and recorded on the same date and called “This is Sir Coxsone Speaking” voiced by Lloyd Coxsone.
In 1969 Festus ruled the dancehall all around, from England to all over the world and his sound revolutionized the concept of sound system culture, working with all kinds of artists like Bob Marley & , King Tubbys, Upsetters, Lee Perry, The Pioneers, The Ethiopians, the Chambers, Aswad, Dennis Brown, Junior Delgado, Horace Andy, Tappa Zuckie, I roy, Bunny Lee, Leroy Smart, John Holt, Barry Biggs, Gregory Isaacs, Sugar Minott, Cocoa Tea, Mykal Rose, Tony Rebel, Johnny Osbourne, U Roy, Max Romeo, Johnny Clarke, Mikey General, Turbulence, Sizzla, Devon Russel, Al Campbell, Trinity, Rodney Thomas, Frankie Paul, Wayne Wade, Dillinger, Junior Taminls, Macka B, Nicodemus, Chuckie Star, Junior Reid, Pinchers and many more. From day one, Festus was a friend of these artists and he used to go on tour with them opening the most significant concerts at the time. Festus for this artist was a mentor. Also in that year, there was the first Riot Rebellion in England.
In Seventy Coxsone was champion sound everywhere in England, cause most of the sound didn’t travel a lot, “Babylon by Truck” was the first mini-tour in the same period as Bob Marley’s “Babylon by Bus”: all the massive acclaimed his selection and most of them came to dancehall only to listen to two tunes: “Ehi Mr Music” & “Natural Mystic” by Bob Marley, cutted by Gussie Clarke.
Festus used to spread the message with his music for Nelson Mandela, and he used to campaign for A.N.C. (African Nation Congress) in London also Coxsone has a special by Mr Mandela. History Sound.
Sir Coxsone was the spearhead of the sound system when people were looking for their identity here in England, and Coxsone was the sound that was taking the messages to the people, up and down the country in England because there wasn’t Radio Station playing our music. Whatever you were at this time, Coxsone was coming to your city to keep the massive near the message.

I was born in the in the sixties and I can remember going up listening to sound system those days they have tube amps not the kind of amplifier they have now as a young kid I used to spend all day and night. Standing right next to the selector listening to the music watching his every move that was some memories I cherish those days now I have my own sound system

Festus, Blacker, Gappy Crucial… Those were my heroes coming up in Brixton in the 80's. I never once saw Lloydie play the sound until in the 2000's. It kind of made Lloyd look more powerful just coming in the dance with all the crew taking care of business, and just standing up silently in the corner. As youths we used to come to the dance and be guessing who would be playing the sound. Some of us wanted Blacker, and some wanted Festus. Some of us always felt it was time Gappy had his chance... Whoever it was we all wanted the long blue preamp! LOL. There was another preamp they used sometimes with the transformer on mounted on the back, which in my opinion wasn't as good.
Coxsone Sound was like a well drilled football team, where you had your favourite striker and manz on subs bench. Whoever played Coxsone sound, it was always about the music selection. You were always going to hear tune you never heard before, and sometimes tune that you would not hear again. Coxsone sound definitely played different to the other sounds, they would suddenly switch selection mid flow, and play something you wouldn't expect that would leave you scratching your head. As I got older I started to understand, that like Festus said, they were: "bussing new artists" That was Coxsone sound.
It's very sad to hear about the break up between Lloyd and Blacker, and now Lloyd and Festus. It must be hard to keep good relationships between close group over the decades without a falling out. I guess all good things must come to an end though. 100% respect for the upload. Proppa Tingz.

The Club Fada Festusa is referring to in the West End was called the 'Roaring Twenties' In them days, those that followed sound system was shocked beyond belief when we heard that a reggae sound was playing in the west end becasue the West End was a prestigious area at that time. Many years later the West End became a place to enjoy your weekend of reggae music and a club called the 'Angel' off Oxford Street was where the likes of Duke Reid and Neville Enchanter played on Fridays nights and after that a club called 'Gossips' emerged where Rodigan and others played - the West End was the boom!!!

I Remember the older crew ..Festus used to always play the main set ..and party nights in the West End LIoydie and Denzil would play ..them days you could hire Coxone for any occasion, as Lloydie, said some nights the sound would be playing 3 venues While I have nuff respect for Festus ..there is a reason why him and Coxsone fell out. So talk the truth or don't say anything..

All soundman have ego and selective memory because i've heard dennis rowe in an interview going on about saxon killed everyting as if we the audience wasn't there and another time chubba youth also says he kill every sound and even though Stereograph was my favourite sound i had to disagree with his comment but the bit that got me doubting festus is when he said Shaka put his hands on his head as in a sign of surrender and said he would never play him again

no point in adding fuel to the fire. It's a sad demise of a relationship. Black people need to learn what is lost when no one learns from envy jealousy and denial they can keep.accusing each other which has no destination. time to value what is left and give thanks to the impact even if they are both frightened to be honest because of egos...which blind

Something isn't right , about 4 years ago Festus came to Nottingham with Lloyd & played together with our sound fast forward to 2018 & Coxsone came to Nottingham again with Eek-O- mouse but this time no festus, my boss asked Lloyd where's Festus & he said they're not together no more because Festus is on coke , so that must of been around the time they had a fight . damn shame two pensioners fighting , I bet it was over all those dubs , because Blacker or Festus sold them to some white man . All those bad Half Pint etc tunes from the early 80s.

This guy just sounds like he talks a lot of B.S…… so it was all him he did everything……. He wasn’t no big selector that I have seen , that is all hype ….. I seen him play and he is just not very good he just seems to fumble his way through, I’m mystified as to why he would think he was a top selector - I just don’t see it I sorry to say.
