this video has me in tears..of happy memories...i am only half american...my mother and abuela are both now dead...i grew up watching my mom and grandma cook like this and have fun in the kitchen and always speaking in spanish so "the kids cant understand" I always understoond...because I was nosey and spied and always wanted to know what they were up to and i loved to eat and watch them cook. My entire spanish (grew up in los angeles so we adopted mexican culture/food as immigrating from spain at age 8 mom didnt have other spanairds to grow up with....grandma didnt have any spainard women either) side of my family...all of my hispanic heritage is gone....i wanted to learn to make this...and while i got the exact recipe they used watching this...i got SO much more out of this!! thank you ....I love you and your granny!! well done ladies....your both adorable and I will follow you and spy on YOUR kitchen now haha! Blessed Be!! )o(

pinkspeeder HUGS to you, I understand completely, my parents also had that hidden other language, I hated that they wouldn't teach me. They wanted to Americanize me because neither parent spoke English until they started school. Looking back I lost out too. Now my folks are gone and I am old. But I understand they meant well. I love these videos too.

Just found this site, you are very smart to have these videos of your abuela cooking. I watched my grandma & wrote down her instructions as she cooked. No way to record her cooking back in the 1970's. There is nothing as wonderful as the sight & smells of a gifted cook in her element, and IMO the Latino (Mexican) kitchen smells THE BEST. My favorite.

Just a suggestion- it's something my wife and I do for any dish where you have to peel the skin. You just coat the outside of the rellano pepper with oil and bake it at 450 degrees fahrenheit for 25-30 min. Take it out and let it cool for 5 min. The peel completely separates from the vegetable on it's own.

That sounds like a really great idea! It really does, but just a note for Authentic mexican chiles reyenos, the way this abuelita does it is the Traditional mexican way to do it. This is how my entire family does it too. Dont loose sight of that my friend.

I'm also, to be honest, someone without 'old' recipes, my grandmother died when I was 2, my mom is a good cook, but all our recipes are at best one generation old, not the OLD stuff like you get when you have family with you throughout your life. I like old recipes, because, to me, good food, good meals, time spent working on it, is an act of love and appreciation to your family, so, those old recipes that stand for generations-- they're awesome.

Just a little tip: place a hot roasted chile in between a paper towel and pull from the stem. The burnt, chard skin will fall off. You will not get burnt and it is faster and cleaner to peel chile's. I love watching the videos. Thank you for continuing traditional mexican cooking.

Abuelita cooking is ALWAYS the best. I want to go to my grandma's house right now to see what she's cooking!
Every now and then she asks me to do some work in her yard (a huge 5 acre ranch) and she offers to pay me. I tell her, "No ama, you don't have to pay me. But I would appreciate a good meal!" and she hooks it up! Pozole, gorditas, enchiladas, tacos al pastor and asada, and my personal favorite, chiles rellenos with a side of sopa de arroz, refried beans, and any tortillas she's happen to have or make (her flour and corn tortillas are so good you cry from happiness while eating it).
She starts off making food for 2-3 people, but she ends up with enough food to feed an army. Then everyone in the family benefits, because they come over to grab a bite.

i learned how to make this watching your video and i have been making them for a little over a year for family and friends. We live in AZ, and have plenty of Hispanic people that I cook for and good Mexican restaurants around and I am told my (your) chile rellenos are the best they have had. THANKS !! I love watching you two interact, feels like I am in your kitchen.
