Perp walking an 11-year-old boy? That’s not acceptable here. Just like you mentioned, an 11-year-old boy does not have the same mental capabilities as a 16 or 17-year-old. I also vote pretty conservative most of the time, but I don’t believe this is right.
I can't believe I missed your comment! Absolutely agree. I don't generally have a soft approach, there is an age where you have to take a different approach. You can't treat an elementary school kid like a senior in high school. This kid made some mistakes but how many failures around him led to this? This kid still has the opportunity to turn things around. While I don't know, I suspect the thought process involved was not well developed in this case. I have a strong feeling this was for shock value, playing on what was in the news without much thought about consequences. Rarely do 11-year-olds formulate detailed plans. Can they do wrong? Absolutely but let's get real. A 5th/6th grader isn't a criminal mastermind. This needed intervention, assessment, monitoring and restitution...Not a public hanging.
The problem is middle school, which was a bad idea as an institution. I favor a continental model of K-6 in elementary school followed by 7-12 in high school.
Similar to the way they do things in other countries. I don't know what the best option is. I know kids are being exposed to things they truly don't have a full grasp of at younger ages these days. So much of this is drawing likes, drawing social media followings...It's addicting to young children. From birth these days kids are given gadgets in the United States....The addiction is very real, kids have melt down when they get their phones taken way...On a nuclear level.....Also kids will freak out if no one likes their shorts. This likely played a role in this kids decision.
In the UK ,26 September 2024, two boys aged 12 were convicted of killing a 19-year-old. If you're old enough to commit the crime you're old enough to do the time. The fact is, children nowadays ARE maturing MUCH faster than we did 60 years ago. They have sex much earlier, they get into crime and drugs much earlier, but they have absent parents = they grow up much faster than my generation, and with all that comes consequences.
THEY ARE MINORS!!!. Kids deal with bullies all the time. Many violent kids are the result of past bullying. The Sheriff is an Adult Bully public shaming minors. WRONG in every way possible. Shame on him. Leave these kids to the court system for rehabilitation.
It's about time these criminal-minded kids' identification and actions are no longer protected. They want to act like adults, let them face the music like adults. Their parents want to ignore them and pamper them and pretend little Johnny and little Bobby-sue are innocent because everyone else has issues but not their kids, then let the parents endor the embarrassment along side them.
Presumed innocent until proven guilty in the court of law. Whether the 11 year old is guilty or not, people have already presumed his guilt on social media. We don't have the evidence. We don't have a trial. He has a right to a defense and due process. Social media has already decided which calls into question a bias. We are outsiders. Yes, there are reports he admitted to making the threats, at least he is willing to take personal accountability and attempt to right a wrong it seems if true. We don't get to tar and feather someone especially a 11 year old. We still have a process to follow, and that process must be followed for each and every person. That is not left or right opinion, it's about the faith in our judicial system. Other countries, our peers, do not release even the name of pre-detention inmates because of this. Germany being one of them.... Even if a DA has a 98% Conviction rate, the 2% who are found innocent...There is a reason why pre-trial detention has differences being post-conviction.
The actual problem is not the age of the suspects BUT THE PRESUMPTION THAT THEY ARE GUILTY. THE SHERIFF IS DESCRIBING THIS AS PUNISHMENT OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE NOT YET BEEN CONVICTED OF A CRIME. PUNISHMENT FOR CRIMES IS THE JOB OF THE COURTS AFTER CONVICTION.
An arrest does not decide guilt or innocence. Nor does evidence that has not been reviewed by a jury. We only use the probable cause that a crime has committed to hold someone in jail, even then a judge as to read the probable cause affidavit…Get it wrong, even for a serious case and you walk out. Anything more than that is decided by the judicial process. It does not define their guilt or innocence. Due process and Constitutional rights and the presumption of innocence are still protections provided to the accused.
@@messrsandersonco5985 Are you aware that there is a Supreme Court decision that says you can legally be ruled out as a cop if you are too smart, but does not address a lower limit?
Do you lock up your kitchen knives from your kids? The access is the same. He was also provided access to those by a parent. You can't buy them under 18. Under the law, juveniles have always been treated differently than legal adults. They will be seen by a juvenile court, only transferring if charged with absolutely heinous crimes and of a certain age. This about finding the appropriate punishment and understanding they do not have the same rational thinking as an adult. They don't, there is no debate there. There is developmental differences between a adult, teen, and child. Holding them to the same standards is not okay. We have to accept we administer sentencing appropriately. He is also not convicted, this is pre-trial detention.
It's NOT Illegal for people under 18 to have those items, they just have to purchased by the Parent. Hell when I was growing up were allowed to bring Rifles to our Middle School when Hunting Season began. People have become too soft and more concerned with 'Feelings" over actions..
@@UniversitySecurity There is no line. If nothing else these parents are accountable. If your little shit pulls the fire alarm, the authorities are on your door step. @@UniversitySecurity I know he wasn't the shooter. I take it your security. Any disruption by any snot nosed kid affects daily life. This is way outside the norm for juvenile offenders at 11 years old. I think you know that. This is not making excuses or degrading the seriousness threats, it’s the recognition it’s a child, not even a teenager. I addressed placing him in victim impact and setting up restitution, along with monitoring and removing all weapons from his possession. I also discussed possible placing him in a correctional facility…I think that depends on how advanced his plans were….Thats reasonable for this age group. No where did I say a sorry was enough, but there is a clear difference between adult, teen, and child offenders…there always has been in the US system. You don’t get to take that away. Because you are annoyed. This is not a soft approach, it’s a measured one with understanding that we have a legal responsibility to protect due process and juveniles are different especially this young. You want to parade a 17 year old shooter, arsonist, child predator…you’re going to see a completely different opinion from me. 11 and the bias that is being shown for digital threats…it’s way too young.

Sheriff's statement and proposal belies the "innocent until proven guilty" rhetoric we've all been taught.

Public shaming works. Parents should take responsibility.

Yes, it’s pre conviction. I highlighted this as well.
I disagree. There absolutely MUST be evidence of a crime. No policeman is stupid enough to accuse an 11-year-old without evidence!
