This is a Lesney Matchbox Major Pack number 8 Mobilgas Petrol Tanker according to the box. According to the casting base, it is a Thorneycroft Tractor and Thornycroft 2400 Gallon Trailer Tanker. It was produced between 1961 and 1964 but it was not a popular model. It had few variations during this short run, the main one being the rare black plastic wheeled versions.
The cab casting is based on a Thornycroft truck of the 1950s, named in my sources as a Thornycroft Nippy. The Nippy was a short wheelbase vehicle that may have been lacking in power to tow a trailer of this size. I certainly could not find any images of the Nippy as a tractor cab as proof. Perhaps instead it might have been based on some of Thornycroft's larger offerings that came in a similar design. The company were in existence from 1896 until 1977 and were founded by famed shipbuilder Sir John Thornycroft.
My casting had shed its Mobilgas decals that were found on the sides of the tanker but it had rather miraculously retained most of its Mobil with pegasus logo attached to the rear. I sourced some reproduction decals and gave the entire casting, bases included, a coat of TS-8 Italian Red.
