My clinical instructor who is old enough to be my grandmother makes me dread clinical days. I thought I was going to be shadowing some nurses on the floor and just observing, but from day one my clinical instructor threw me a file and said here's your file, there's your patient, good luck. I had absolutely no idea what I was supposed to be doing and 1/2 of the stuff she expected me to do I didn't even learn in lab yet on a dummy. Then she gives me pop quizzes in front of the patients and makes me feel stupid when I don't know stuff. I am only halfway through my 1st semester. She's also super nice to the clients, but really harsh with us. If it wasn't for the fact that I worked so hard to get into this program I would have quit already just because of her. I feel like she's trying to break us instead of building us up. I'm not a wimp, but if I wanted a drill Sargent I would have joined the military instead.

As a complex illness patient, I am sorry that you're being treated this way. To this day I've never said no to a student being involved in my care...what I always tell them is that they have to learn sometime, every nurse has been there (a student).
Also, this type of situation that you are describing is terribly uncomfortable for the patient who has to witness it. So she is most likely making her/your "client" or patient, uncomfortable and embarrassed for you.
Thank you for commenting! This is helping me learn how I as the patient can advocate for you and call out situations like this. Ill pray for you as you go through clinicals. You sound like a great student with the ability to be a great nurse!

I am a clinical instructor, I so agree with what you are saying.I feel as if at sometimes the staff see my students as scab labor. I agree we are there to learn and practice nursing!

I have been trying to explain this to my instructor, I’m in Med Surg II and she still has us doing CNA work . I feel like we should get the vitals and accuchecks on the pt(s) we have been assigned to not the entire floor . I already work as a PCT II, I’m tired of taking vitals .

Many times for the nurses to more accepting of students …they want you to do the whole floor to help out. It’s not a problem of helping out but should not be your entire focus.

This meant a lot to me because my clinical instructor is really great and always shapes our days around what we learned in class. But, I am dealing with two unit nurses who keep telling other classes that come on opposite days that “we don’t do anything” because they want us to do their VS, I&O, bed baths, 8am & 12pm med passes (reassessments) and so on. Their gossip got so bad that it got back to the director of our program and they asked me what was going on our Fridays.
Instead, our clinical instructor shapes our experience around whatever we have been learning every week in class. It’s so discouraging because those 2 nurses are so hard to deal with on our clinical day. They are short with us, rude, messy. I actually get a stomach ache before clinical because of so much toxic stuff I've heard them say about us from other students whose clinical instructor lets them do everything the 2 nurses want. Last Friday, I had to ask where a specific kind of tubing was and the nurse said to me, "You mean you're actually doing something?" it's just so weird. I was worried that clinical would be a hostile environment and I guess it came true for me but I'm hoping that healthcare isn't like this mostly and that I get to work on good units with good nurses, too. I am proud of my clinical instructor for not paying attention to them and teaching us even though they are also rude to her. Thank you.

My ADN program did the same thing. We were never partnered with floor nurses ,like you our instructors were with us every step of the way. I learned so much. I think it’s great that you do this as well. You are a great instructor.

I’m happy you came across my timeline. This upcoming summer term, I will be in Adult Health/Clinical’s on the Med/Sur floor. This gave me insight. Many have told me this segment of learning is when theory and skills will click. Thanks.

Love❤️ your video! I am currently an LVN student and will be starting clinicals in two weeks, and I am extremely nervous. Speaking as a black nursing student, being able to see someone I can identify with that can understand how to reach me or make things clearer helps with making my goals obtainable. I absolutely love all of my instructors, and two of my instructors are African American women. Thank you so much for giving me an idea as to how to prepare myself for clinical and you are definitely inspirational.

Thank you so much! Let me just say that this is my way and if they do something different it is not necessarily wrong. Teaching nursing students is not easy and we all have strategies to help convey what needs to be learned. With all that being said there are instructors who do whatever the unit needs without regard what the needs of the students are. Just be mindful!! Best Wishes!!!

I completely agree! It is really hard to find great resources to help become a better nursing instructor in the class or clinical setting. Especially classroom management and things that may not come as natural for an experienced nurse from the floor.
Thank you for your video! It was really helpful.

Hey there!! Well first of all you are hilarious! I found you because I am preparing to be a clinical instructor. I completely agree with you on this. First of all, why do working nurses forget how they became a nurse? We ALL did clinical rotations. The hospital hosting the nursing students should have clear rules on what the nursing students do, actually posted on the board in the core hallways of the unit and notify staff via email. I work in a psychiatric hospital in Los Angeles, and we actually just have the nursing students observe what we do. The nursing students are allowed to speak with a patient to try and due their mental status examination, accompanied by other staff. They are not even allowed to pass meds like on the med surg units.. They accompany us to the pyxis machine and watch us get the meds. And we are supposed to be explaining the meds or asking the nursing student what the meds are, etc. It seems that some nurses have short memories. We are teaching the new nurses how to be better than we are. I love the way you explained this. I totally get it. Btw you look sooo super cute. Love your hair!! Get it sis!!!

You did a great job with this video. I've seen a lot of students speak on their experience but not from a 1-on-1 teacher that teaches and what to expected during clinical for a specific class. And you're right look it up! The reason why I say that to is because I am a picture hands on type and it gives me a better memory. And giving the right way to do it from the beginning. However, I may come to your youtube page and asked some questions that may seem kind of ridiculous but I'll still ask John 14:6. Thank you💖

Why dont they know...they werent born as nurses? They had to go through nursing school too...am I right? What's the confusion again? I understand there are different stages and ages of nurses who learned the way they learned...but the operative word is Nursing "STUDENT"....all I can say is wow! How selfish.
