Ex-framer here, I built plenty of curved walls in the late 90's. We cut the top and bottom plates from ¾" plywood, doubled up. Then wood or steel studs 12"o/c or 6" o/c if it was a tight radius.

I bought a condo with curved walls a few years ago. Always was curious about how they were made. This has certainly satisfied my curiosity, although our walls are _slanted_ on top of being curved, so I'm assuming they had to cut the edges at an angle to fit the geometry. The part about most problems being already solved when it comes to walls (and home improvement in general), is really true. This is something we observe in software engineering too. Outside of bleeding edge tech, there's rarely a problem that wasn't already solved. You can try and solve it by yourself to exercise your brain, but if you need it done quickly, it's always faster to just go look for a precedent.

Tip 1: Most trim is not going to stay with nails in the drywall only. You'd want nails into wood studs or screws into steel studs to keep it in place. Alternatively, install it with construction adhesive. Tip 2: To mark a perfect curve: Hammer a nail into the floor, attach a string and tie it to a pencil/marker at the desired length. Mark a partial circle on the floor.

Jeff, how do I tape that top joint to the ceiling?

    • @huuamai8151
      @huuamai8151 4 роки тому +1

Hmm... i've never tried a curved joint, but how about this:
You know how the tape wrinkles if you would try to bend it into a curve because you are forcing the paper to fold?
Cut a line on the wrinkle (preferably the end that goes to the ceiling). That way, you are not forcing the paper- but rather overlapping one end of the cut over the other.
This way, you can run the tape neatly along the wall part of the joint and then the ceiling part will only have a few cuts along the curve.
I would imagine it would work better with mesh tape.
I don't know if I'm explaining this right, though.

We’re those self tapping screws? I’ve had trouble with those screws on light gauge framing.

I have used a 1/4 inch drywall for a curved ceiling but, I can not sink the 1-inch Drywall screws into the drywall. I am using metal studs. What should I do or do you recommend any screws for 1/4 inch drywall? The head of the screws are out of the dry wall.
    Thank you

check to make sure you are using fine thread screws and not the course thread version.

So should you do the floor before you put up the drywall?

On the subject of the screws, what brand are you using? Also wondering what type of bits for Phillips, Torx, etc.. you find to be the longest lasting, etc.. ? Inquiring minds want to know 🙃

When you have a larger curved wall that's too large for one continuous horizontal piece, how do you float the vertical seams? We're on a job right now with a large spiral staircase and I've had to do some patching and the vertical seams are the worst

Awe man. Why didn't you tell me this 12 years ago. It would have saved me hours and hours. I built my own house with a basement and upper story curved staircase. I built a curved wall along one side of it. You dont want to know how I did it, but in the end it came out perfect. But oh the hours of work. 😁

How are you nailing trim on the bottom straight into that metal track?🤨
