    I had a friend who was a professional dog trainer. Her favorite breed was the giant schnauzer. She had two of them at the same time. She loved dogs that were very hard to train. RIP, Kim, I really miss you.

    Our Riesenschnauzer-girl challenges me every day. She is the most loving, forgiving and protective dog for our kids. But at the same time she reflects your mental state in training. If you perform poorly; she does. And vise versa.

      Giant Schnauzers and Bouviers are both outstanding powerful guardians that don’t get near enough attention but they can be a bit aloof. Personally I love their that quality because they won’t just run over to anyone who calls them or except food from anyone one with a treat: they know who THIER people are and act accordingly.

    • @1packatak
      @1packatak 5 місяців тому +2

      It’s a good thing!! They are not nearly as popular. Which keeps the puppy mills and back yard breeders from messing them up! Trust me you do not want that to happen. The three breeds you listed, along with many others have been destroyed because of PM and BYB.

    Lol I loved grooming my dog, Since he was a puppy, I would brush him every second day. Not sure how that is something negative. I would get it professionally groomed once in a while and then just keep trimming a little myself every weekend so I won't need professional grooming too often. If you love your dog, you would love doing all these things with and for them. Like dogs are not a painting to be acquired and just hung on the wall.

    Grooming can be done far less often if we are talking about cutting hair.
    I'd say every three months is good.
    The advantage is they don't really shed so all the hair comes off at one time. Rather than tumble weeds of fluff all over the house.
    Brushing several times a week is definitely required though.
    As far as stubborn and strong, those are relative. I'd say my 'most' stubborn dog is my German shepherd. Then my Australian shepherd. My giant is more cautious, he is more likely to 'frezz or halt' when he is unsure of direction. He often times stops or backs up, sits and looks at me for more direction.
    I think often times this is confused with stubborn. I believe this is his cautious, guarding instincts.
    My German shepherds and Australian shepherd are always moving forward. If they make a mistake you have to walk them back around or have them circle back. My giant will actually reverse which is odd.
    My giant definitely doesn't have the OCD prey drive that the shepherds have. He's goofy, friendly, cuddly, inquisitive and lacks the obsessiveness of my other pups.
    I think it makes him an outstanding companion and watch dog.

    • @porshajones5869
      @porshajones5869 5 місяців тому +1

      Seeing your comment gave me reassurance. I am researching the giant a lot. I really want one and plan to take several professional training classes.

    • @jonathanpark7658
      @jonathanpark7658 5 місяців тому

      @@porshajones5869 I can't say it any better than I think my Giant is my ideal dog.
      I love my other dogs but my German shepherd, at 13 barely lets me pet him. He requires that I gently toss the ball so he can chase it. Even In his old age he routinely plays too rough.
      If my giant gets a little rough, I gently say No, he is quite literally devastated.
      When I give him a command, he does it so fast that I've had trainers complement it. Funny thing is, it's not me. It's the dog. He wants with all his little heart to do whatever I ask.
      Just work with a trainer than Is gentle but firm. Trying to force a giant to do things is a dumb way to think about it. They stop and assess the situation because that's what guard dogs do.
      My shepherds charge in because they were breed to herd sheep and guard the flock. Neither of those things benefit from a dog standing still.
      Guarding a home, person or brewery though, you don't want them running off.
      I just think people forget what kind of dog they are trying to train.
      The grooming is a lot, but it's no more time dedication than properly grooming my German shepherd. The difference is that the shepherds is a little all the time. When a Giant you end up spending that same amount of time but all in one day, if you groom them yourself.
      If you pay someone, then it's even easier, though more costly.
      If you groom yourself, buy some really nice clippers meant for thick hair and it will be a lot faster.
      My first time took 4 or 5 hours.
      Now I can do it in under an hour.

      If you want a fancy haircut it costs 2-3 hundred. If you just want a shave, it's roughly 1-2 hundred.
      I either cut or have my Giants hair cut every 3 months or so. Though I brush him for 5 ish minutes a day.
      I actually find it preferable to the shedding of my other dogs. As I don't need anymore tumble weeds of fluff.
      As far as food costs go, it's the most expensive part.
      This big pup costs more money in food than in healthcare, insurance, grooming and the rest combined. Even buying him initially was soon eclipsed by feeding him.

    100% agree with #1 which is what I said under your Top.3 reasons for getting this dog - how stubborn and strong-willed they are. I once had a client who had a Schnoodle, which was even worse because of the poodle mix with a schnauzer. The dog looked horrible because they couldn't take him to a groomer because they babied him and he became aggressive. As their dog walker, I was the only one he trusted and I actually was able to convince a friend who was a groomer to at least shave off all the mats and long hair that he had with me holding him and having him muzzled. It took us an hour and a 1/2 just to do that but he looked amazing and felt so much better. I was the only one who could ever clip his nails as well because he knew I was in charge and he trusted me.

    The only experience I've had with Giant schnauzers are from a neighbor long ago. She had two. She also had an electrified fence and a front screen door open all day, every day. Any time anyone walked by the front yard, those dumb dogs would start barking like crazy, which would set off my neighbor something awful. She would start shouting, "SHUT! UP! SHUT UP SHUT UP SHUT UP!!!" This would go on many times a day. You knew when they were in the backyard because they would constantly run into the electrified fence and bark, which would then set off my neighbor, who would then start yelling, etc. All. Day. Every day. So I've never, ever liked schnauzers, giant or not.

    #1 Reason not to buy a Giant Schnauzer - you might think you are buying a Giant Schnauzer but ended up buying a Russian Black Terrier, which just multiplied all of your above mentioned problems by a factor of 10.

    Brush at least once or twice a week at minimum??
    Your using the crappiest kind of brush for this breed btw 🤦🏻‍♀️
    lol it costs so much because it’s going to be obviously matted if your only brushing once or twice at minimum with this kind of brush 🤣🤦🏻‍♀️

    I love Schnauzer's so much, they are so loveable and friendly and fantastic with kids .My miniture has a tendency to have a mind of his own at times which is actually fun. But he's 11 years old and has fathered over 70 pups so I let it slide 😂😂. The giants look amazing, I've only ever seen one here in Ireland, beautiful animals.

    Same apples to standard size. They're not a joke with their strength either. I had 2. Still have one and boy did they walk all over me 🙄. The only dogs I couldn't figure out. Not for everyone.

    I've got a 9 month old Giant Schnauzer and this is all true, but I work with him everyday and he's awesome. I love this breed but also being so big and high energy can be difficult with small children, especially as a puppy.

    You don't want to get knots down to their skin that virtually require shaving off and leaving bald spots, you brush thoroughly once a day if not more.

    I had a standard schnauzer and loved him . Somewhat hyper and originally I cut his hair but later once a month I had it done for $50 but that was over 10 years ago. Not hard to train to me but I grew up with dogs but did have stubborn streak and very intelligent . Also had a Doberman at same time and he was slightly more willing to please and therefore trainable . The giant seems slightly more energetic and is obviously bigger but otherwise if only dog I think as long as not first full sized dog and you are decently active and outdoorsy should be fine .

    What about the medium size Schnauzer? Are those also working line?

    • @Lazyspaceout
      @Lazyspaceout 5 місяців тому

      Those are actually called standard schnauzer and they were also original breed as protectors before gaint ones and mini were made

      Unless you are trying to do work, I wouldn't worry about working lines.
      They aren't popular enough to have the same health concerns as some other breeds where working lines are a prerequisite for healthy.
      Giants are the healthiest, followed by minis and then standards.
      They follow the same list in regards to ease of training as well.
      This is all from what I'm told and my limited experience.
      With that being said, I've had standards square their bodies and challenge me while I was visiting a friend. I was walking to the bathroom and had a rather bold 45 pound standard refuse to let me past lol
      Definitely talk with breeder, as different lines can have different personalities.
      I love my giant because he doesn't have the drive my shepherds do.

      I'd say male poodle or giant schnauzer, everything else is too small or too big (komodor). A male poodle from a useful line is a formidable dog, and a massively more alert watchdog than a giant schnauzer. The gs is the one you want to survive a riot though, but many of them won't tolerate strangers doing anything sudden or threatening. I've had many of both, same reasons you cited.
      These coats need to be shaved totally tight btw, poodle and gs traditional cuts are a useless tradition and disgusting seasonally. Just do it yourself

      I can't speak for all giants. Mine has the relaxed guard dog personality I've seen in Rottweilers.
      Gets tired after 15 minutes of chasing a ball.
      My shepherds can go for hours.
      My significant other was walking our giant one night. As they Walked up to the house, I came out from between our cars. My giant immediately got between us. Growled and barked. I was impressed, he immediately stopped once I said something and he realized who I was.
      He's a fantastic dog.

    • @OnkyoGrady

      @@Inothanks171 I love the black terriers. I consider them a +50lb giant schnauzer, and I'm (approvingly) suspicious that they are actively being crossed into gs lines to add diversity. I like it bc the giants schnauzers were almost a total wipe after the world wars. Besides weren't the terriers just appropriated gs' at first?
      I know nothing about the bouvies though, I've maybe seen one once.
