    Just wanted to add .. In Indian culture there is a tradition of giving names to children based on a Birth Charts .. It uses the significations of planets and the sounds associated with them to get the most out of individuals .. The idea is, if an individual keeps hearing a particular sound vibration they are invoking the corresponding planet and its significations. Usually it is the Lagna Lord or Moon Raasi Lord as they are auspicious. Sun is represented by the vowels , Moon represents ya, ra, la va se sha .. , Mars Ka Kha Ga Gha na, Venus cha, cha jha, jha .. etc, Mercury ta tha dha .. etc, Jupiter ta tha da dha .. etc , saturn pa, pha bha .. Primary focus is on sound vibration.

    That auricular difference between the gemini and the Virgo dissonant really allows knowledge to sink in, thank you for adding it,
    The "devil's note" used without scarcity by Bach also reflects the deep nature of Scorpio making it all make sense.
    The geometry of it is baffling, as per everything falls into an order, and there's nothing left to chance. Thank you so much for the lesson, we'll take it.

      oooo that is interesting! it would be fun to look at various composers chart and compare them with the intervals they seemed to enjoy using the most. Someone noted that the hardcore punk music I wrote really extensively used 4#. My moon is in Scorpio navamsha, and also my 8th house is the focal point of the chart (I wonder if it would be reliable to correlate that)

      @@VicDiCaraAstrology That's a great idea! I'll pull up some data and look a bit closer at those composers, you Sir, just gave me a great assignment :D Also, it doesn't take an astrology genius to know you're heavily 8th house rulled. I would suggest that you're one of what I call the spooky boy's clan (heavy cap and scorpio placements) but it's just a hunch 🤷 thank you for responding, really appreciate it.

    this is brilliant and beautifully timed!
    i've been internally inquiring around the idea of using the overlays of the astrological wheel and the musical intervals as sound therapy for years but have struggled as someone who is primarily a vocalist (who was able to intuitively grasp music theory through practice when i was immersed in it) to digest any western musical theory enough to actually be able to take action on it. and i've spent a lot of time wondering how it would work-i've contemplated how one would go about assigning tones to different planets and if the key signiture would change depending on a planet that would determine it (or the rising sign...all just contemplations i've been mulling over without the skill to explore them and not knowing where to start).
    it's such a relief to have a brief and powerful lesson into vedic music and feel the aliveness that is honored in the understanding of the scale as relational rather than static. that's something i lean into inner inquiry about often and feel resistance to, the idea tones are static. it's exciting to learn that you can even look up vedic music based on tonal relationships!
    i didn't realize how much i was overcomplicating the matter. referring back to sa and contextualizing the medicinal tone in that as a tonal titration is what i've been internally sensing is possible and powerful medicine but not knowing how to go about assigning anything.
    with a few more times with this video, this practice is something i'm going to be able to integrate into client work so quickly. thank you for distilling this and sharing this integration of your skills and interests! rich, rich teaching.

My son, Scorpio 🌞 Aquarius 🌙 Gemini ⬆️, writes and sings rock music 🎶 that would be considered a spin on grunge genre with a heavy focus on social justice ⚖️ issues. The more I learn about astrology I'm becoming more and more convinced that Astrology IS THE parenting manual that many people say children aren't born with yet wish they were 😂. Certainly explains why I'm drawn to the various types of music and tones that I'm drawn to as well as a Cancer 🌞 Aquarius 🌙 Libra ⬆️ along with fully supporting my sons work, especially enjoying their pieces in regards to social justice and lifting humanity despite not necessarily caring for the screaming components in their music due to sending my central nervous system into orbit 😂 yet can appreciatewhy it appeals to others 👍.
    I'm incredibly interested to see 👀 what you do with all of this beautiful soul. Again, sharing this series with my son in case he may be interested in utilizing some of these concepts and tones albeit I'm sure with a western twist.

    I love this.
    Are you familiar with the Western theories of temperament? Especially 12-tome equal temperament and the distinction between that and Just Intonation?
    I have mostly understood the swaras using the Western concept of ratios, e.g. sa is 1/1, pancham 3/2, madhyam 4/3, etc.
    A man named dr vidyadhar oke has explained the 22 srutis with reference to this. Basically, except sa and pa, each swara has a version based only on the prime number 3, and one based only on either just the prime 5, or a combination of 3 and 5.
    Also, concerning shadja: monier-williams says it means born of 6 (organs of the vocal tract), which makes sense by analogy with, for example, atmaja-born of self. At the same time, saying that it gives birth to the other six shuddha notes makes sense...I'm just curious about it from a linguistic perspective.
    Also, a thought about how to use this. Teach the person how to sing the note. Have them download a tanpura app, and they can sing the note with the tanpura as a meditation.

    • @VicDiCaraAstrology
      @VicDiCaraAstrology  7 місяців тому

      I am not well studied about this, but it seems to me that both just and equal are mathematically based, inspired by Pythagorean theory. Bharata came at it from a completely different perspective. He didn't come with a calculator, he came with his glorious ears and heart. I think when you take a ruler to what he came up with it will make sense, mathematically (as Oke explained). I am not sure if Monier's explanation is acceptable. Are the tones sa and ri so far apart that they require different physical components? It is rather because sa produces and is defined by the other six notes, that it is called ṣaḍja. Finally, your idea about having a person sing IS VERY VERY GOOD.

    • @JohnColeSitar
      @JohnColeSitar 7 місяців тому

      There has been A LOT of speculation in regards to the tuning of the shruti. Sadly Bharat assumes the reader knows them already, for example, he describes tuning the string tuned to Pa on his harp (the instrument called a "vina" during his time was a harp, not the lute instrument that carries the name today) down by one shruti. This has led to many attempts at trying to "reverse engineer" them.

    • @JohnColeSitar
      @JohnColeSitar 7 місяців тому

      That all being said, there is consensus for shudah Pa being 3:2 and one of the Ma's being 4:3. Beyond that is where things get dicey. Some hold that it's purely a 3-limit JI (just intonation), others that it's a 5-limit JI, etc. There are even some who hold that his system was actually a 22TET (equal temperament) - an opinion I reject for various reasons.

    • @JohnColeSitar

    • @joshhumanhaven
      @joshhumanhaven 7 місяців тому

      @@VicDiCaraAstrology yes I think the ruler analogy is good. I studied viola when younger but could never play "in tune" because my ears can't make sense of 12tet, so learning about just intonation was life changing. In the west, Indian music is usually described as being in JI, indicated by ratios, that being the ruler. I would love to learn singing with a tanpura, e.g., dhrupad, and experience the Indian perspective of sound. I forgot the bit about Pythagoras: he liked the number 3 so he based a tuning system on the number 3, not on sound...and I suppose that has messed with us all down the line, privileging numbers over sound.

  • @JohnColeSitar
    @JohnColeSitar 7 місяців тому

    @VicDiCaraAstrology Question: I asked this a few months ago in a Q&A, but since you have been diving deeper into the topic of music I feel it is appropriate to ask again - especially since I can ask it differently......
    Is there anything astrological significant with the number 22?
    As you pointed out in this video the seven svaras can correspond to the seven planets, the twelve "chromatic notes" with the twelve zodiac signs.
    So what astrologically can correspond with the 22 shruti?

      AFAIK, no, there is nothing - therefore some students of bharata muni become uncomfortable with the concept and try to adjust it to 24. AFAIK It is simply that he heard 22 identifiable tones between any octave.

      @@VicDiCaraAstrology Thanks for the reply. Part of my research is trying to find out why the number 22 was selected. Since some attribute there being 7 "main" pitches due to there being 7 planets, and some like to link the 12 "chromatic" pitches to the 12 zodiac signs; I was wondering if there was such a thing for the 22 shruti and something astrological.
      In Western music there's a system of 19-tones per octave, and of course there are 19 divisions in the metonic lunar cycle (whose partitioning , interestingly, is lined up with a diatonic scale).
      Even though your expertise is in Vedic Astrology, I'm sure you know quite a bit about Hellenistic as well. Do you know of anything the Hellenistic system that might offer some clues?

      I dont think the "number was selected." That is a pythagorean way of looking at this. Phythagoras assumed that numbers were at the root of reality. Bharata did not. In Vedic thinking, numbers can DESCRIBE reality, but they are not at the root of it (brahman - consciousness - is at the root of it). Bharata didnt select 22 or even care that the number was 22. He just *listened.* Listening, he noticed 22 distinct pitches. If we ask "why" we will probably figure something out about the physical limitations of the human ear.

      I found some information about this in a book called "Science of Melody" - and that author is directly referencing some text, I am not exactly clear what - the devanagari typesetting is terrible and I am a little lazy. But he says 22 nadi cross the ida/pingala nadya, and this is a basis for humans being able to distinguish 22 sounds in an octave. He also said some other things that are interesting, correlatting "4,3,2,4,4,3,2" to several other things and making it all link. Link most English books written by Indians in India, the presentation is in extreme need of a very very thorough editing, and very difficult to access, but the content is superb. "Science of Melody" is the title. The section begans about halfway through the book ("Section 2: Nada, Sruti, Svara")

    You said you deviated from the 2nd being in Aquarius and instead you put it in Capricorn. But since the flat 2nd is so disharmonious, wouldn't it be better to assign that to the sign opposite Leo - Capricorn, and put the 2nd in Aquarius? Where did the Indian guy you like out the flat 2nd?

      i put all the shuddha svara on the first placements. Opposite from Leo is aquarius, this suddha-ri (pure second). The modified second (flat) is on the other saturn-owned sign, Capricorn. Vasumtira Ji put it the other way around, he puts flat 2nd in aquarius and pure 2nd in capricorn.

      there is an esoteric idea out there that a fretboard has analogy to the spinal column. I have not explored it and so dont have an opinion on it. some say it is particularly the vina, and particularly the rudra vina fretboard. what i DO know for sure is that the musical "intrument" merges with the body "instruments" (aka indriyā, aka "senses") so that it becomes a natural part of the musicians body. Unless that happens the musician is very poor in the art.

    I'm curious where do Rahu and Ketu fit in the musical scale. Since they are not physical grahas, maybe R and K are the modes/ragas which capture the mood of actual notes?! Or are they the microtonal notes in between the whole/half notes?!

    • @VicDiCaraAstrology
      @VicDiCaraAstrology  7 місяців тому +3

      For a few centuries, people have been trying to stick Rāhu and Ketu everywhere and anywhere. Instead, they just dont belong sometimes. However, in musical theory, Rāhu is the *arohana* (ascending progression) of the rāga, and Ketu is the *avarohana* (descending progression). Also, we can feel Rāhu and Ketu in the *dynamics* of the music. Crescendos express Rāhu, Decrescendos express Ketu. Also stacatto wil bring out the presence of nodes. Also rāgas that have fewer notes and longer gaps between the notes accenturate nodes.

    Maybe you didn't get the chance to read all my comments before you deleted your original video (correcting the svaras), the shruti partitioning is still incorrect - at least from the system of Bharat.
    The Natyasastra states that from Sa to Re is 3, Re to Ga is 2, Ga to Ma is 4, Ma to Pa is 4, Pa to Dha is 3, Dha to Ni is 2, Ni to Sa is 4.
    This makes his Ga equivalent to the modern komal Ga, and his Ni equivalent to the modern komal Ni.
    Of course there is nothing wrong with using the modern system, but how you presented it makes it sound like you are stating it's Bharat's system.

    • @VicDiCaraAstrology
      @VicDiCaraAstrology  7 місяців тому +1

      on what basis are you stating this? I do not find support for it in this sloka (maybe you have another reference?):
      चतुश्चतुश्चतुश्चैव षड्जमध्यमपञ्चमाः द्वे द्वे निषादगान्धारौ त्रिस्त्री ऋषभधैवतौ
      catuś catuś catuś caiva
      ṣaḍja madhyama pañcamāḥ
      dve dve niṣāda gāndhārau
      tris trī ṛṣabha dhaivatau
      to get the meaning you suggest, one would need the fifth declension case, "ablative". Nothing in this statement is in ablative, it is all nominative.

    • @JohnColeSitar
      @JohnColeSitar 7 місяців тому +1

      @@VicDiCaraAstrology So the following is from the 28th chapter.
      The text states in 28:24 "In the Sadja grama there are three sruti-s in the Rsabha, two in the Gandhara, four in the Madhyama, four in the Pancama, three in the Dhaivata, two in the Nisada, and four in the Sadja."
      (28:25 reports the same info, just starting from going to Sa)
      How this is understood is that going from Sa to Re there are 3, from Re to Ga is 2, from Ga to Ma is 4, from Ma to Pa is 4, from Pa to Dha is 3, from Dha to Ni is 2, and from Ni to Sa is 4.
      You might be thinking "when it says Re has 3 shruti it means from Re to Ga is 3."
      Well you have to look at the other passages where it goes into detail about the distances.....
      This is clarified by looking at an earlier passage (in the same chapter)
      "Now, Vivadi is where the svara-s are tweny sruti-s apart. For examle, Rsabha and Gandhara, Dhaivata and Nisada."
      So for there to be 20 (2) shrutis between Dha and Ni, there needs to be 4 shrutis between Ni and Sa; and for there to be 20 (2) shrutis between Re and Ga, there needs to be 4 shrutis between Ga and Ma.
      This is further clairifed later in the text it talks about modifying the Sadja grama into the Madhyama grama by tuning the Pa down by 1 shruti. Where it states "In the Madhyama grama Pancama should be made deficient in one sruti."
      It states later that the result of tuning Pa down 1 shruti is "Madhyama consists of four sruti-s, Pancama three, Dhaivata four...."
      Notice by lowering Pa the measurement of Ma did NOT get smaller, but instead the measurement of Pa got smaller and the measurement of Dha got larger.
      So the measurements being given are the "distance to get to the svara named from its lower neighbor", the "distance from the svara named to get its upper neighbor".
      I hope how I explained this in a UA-cam comment makes sense.

    • @VicDiCaraAstrology
      @VicDiCaraAstrology  7 місяців тому +1

      Who taught you this? It does not seem correct. As I explained regarding 28.25, it simply, literally, gramatically, *does not say* "from this to that is N śruti" It explicitly says "N śruti are in A, B, C".
      24 looks like a sutra version of 25.
      28, however is interesting, because it presents an alternative system. Maybe this is what you are thinking of?
      The complete idea in 24-28 seems to be this:
      - There are two systems for tuning
      - The main system is called "Sa-based"
      - The alternative sytem is called "Ma-based"
      The sa-based system is as I explained in the video. The ma-based system is modified so that "Madhyama consists of four Śrutis. Pañcama three, Dhaivata four, Niṣāda two, Ṣaḍja four, Ṛṣabha three and Gāndhāra two Śrutis"

    • @JohnColeSitar

      @@VicDiCaraAstrology So I guess you are going to ignore the fact that the way you are interpreting the partitioning causes the other information he gives (such as "Now, Vivadi is where the svara-s are twenty sruti-s apart. For example, Rsabha and Gandhara, Dhaivata and Nisada") make no sense, as the maths would no longer lines up.
      For example, how you are wanting to read it there would be 18 (4) srutis separating the svaras mentioned.
      "Who taught you this?" This is how it is understood by the musicologists who have study and taught on the topic:
      Daielou, Alain "Northern Indian Music Vol 1", page 44 "To the seven main notes were added, in ancient music, two accessory notes dividing the major tones Ni, Sa (modern Ni k., Sa; Bb, C) and Ga, Ma (modern Ga k., Ma; Eb F) into two half-tones."
      Strangways, A.H. Fox "Music of Hindostan", page 109 "Again he [Bharat] speaks of Sa (one of the svaras) as 'of' four srutis, meaning the interval from the note N to the note S."
      Meer, Wim van der "The Construction, Reconstruction, and Deconstruction of Shruti", page 675 (from a chart) "Sa 3 Re 2 Ga 4 Ma 4 Pa 3 Dha 2 Ni 4 Sa"
      Levy, Mark "Intonation in North Indian Music" page 7 "The consensus among the majority of scholars, however, such as Bake, Jairazbhoy, Deva, Powers, Clements, Danielou, and Sachs, is that Bharata's svaras are pitches, and that the given number of srutis lie immediately below the svara in question."
      Besides all these modern scholars, you have the text of Dattilam (which many date to either slightly before or slightly after Bharat) expresses it in even clearer terms.
      Dattilam, page 5 (from the Kalamulasastra Series, translation by Lath) "In the sadja grama, rsabha is the third higher sruti beginning with the sound accepted as the sadja. This is byond doubt. From rsabha, the second higher sruti is gandhara, and from gandhara the fourth is madhyama.......From dhaivata, nisada is higher by two srutis and from there the fourth is again the sadja."

      @JohnColeSitar 7 місяців тому +1

      And just as an aside (for what it is worth), since you asked me "who taught you this": I am fortunate to personally know both Meer and Levy, and have had many conversations with them where the point came up in regards to the ancient Saregama having a flat-3 and a flat-7 for its base. This is just something that is basically common knowledge for those in the field.
