    Yeah I gotta call BS.
I was grandfathered in no skills teats and just the written part. And most of that was BS written up by lawyers and college idiots. Even back when the whole CDL crap was in stated you could go take the written test, find a company willing to let you use thier truck for the skills part and either a third party tester or state police to give you the test. I still remember the ICC running down the roads in station wagons with portable scale. I have ran 3 logbook at a time.
Back in the eighties walk ins were a thing with a hood with 60 inch sleepers. But drove a few hoods you had to crawl though a hole where the daycare glass goes into a roughly 40 inch sleeper. Crawled over dog houses into a sleeper too. He'll I doubt most if all new drivers are agile or small enough nowdays.

Oh, I thought he was old school. I’m thinking he had a chauffeur license. CDL? That went into affect in April 92’! I guess he’s old school for the new breed of steering wheel holders!

U don't know much, alot of company's and what few schools there were could give u The road tests. Hell the dmvs didn't require a driving school, just a truck to take the test. U also heard him say there was a driving test but from the school.
