Mona Jarrahi: Development of terahertz devices opens doors for numerous applications

    Despite a wide range of potential applications, the terahertz field is not as well-known as the optical or microwave fields, explained University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), associate professor Mona Jarrahi during a recent tour of her lab.
    As a result, she said, terahertz researchers find they have to do more explaining about the technology's potential when discussing how it might contribute to solutions to other researchers' problems.
    The unique spectral signatures of many molecules when exposed to terahertz waves allow for identification of many chemicals and materials, so the technology lends itself to many potential applications.
    The SPIE Senior Member has been working in the terahertz domain for nearly a decade and knows from firsthand experience why the field has struggled to find wide acceptance:
    "The radiation power of sources is not very high, the detection sensitivity of detectors is not very high, and the available devices that show good performance often don't offer compact, low-cost platforms," Jarrahi said
    Dr. Jarrahi and her team at UCLA began working on creating terahertz sources and detectors that could help bridge these gaps.
    Based on accolades, their efforts seem to be working. Jarrahi has earned numerous awards for her research, including a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers in 2014. Just last year, she was one of five inaugural Moore Inventor Fellows named by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation.
    "We are trying to really pinpoint major challenges that we have on the device side." Jarrahi said. At the same time, "whenever we come up with better device performance, that motivates us to look at potential applications that were stopped up to this point because of lack of those functionalities. So we are also looking at a lot of applications."
    Focusing on just one application would be a challenge for the lab, which collaborates on work ranging from cancer detection to planetary gas sensing and other diverse areas.
    "We plan to continue expanding on our developments in developing better terahertz sources and detectors," Jarrahi said. "A technique that we use employing metallic nanostructures to enhance light-matter interaction to offer better efficiencies has a lot of potential. So far we have had technical challenges in terms of fabricating these kinds of structures, so there is a lot of room to improve functionalities of these devices.
    "Going specifically to the terahertz domain was mainly motivated because of the challenges," Jarrahi continued. "I was interested in challenging projects, hard problems. This is an excellent field with a lot of unsolved problems and challenges."
    Jarrahi is an author in three plasmonics technology applications presentations at SPIE Photonics West beginning later this month in San Francisco:
    Plasmonics-enhanced large-area terahertz detectors
    Large dynamic range terahertz spectrometers based on plasmonic photomixers
    Plasmonics-enhanced broadband graphene photodetector

    When asked about Terahertz wave experiments by the US government. Gary Nolan said he was not allowed to talk about it. Why is the government silencing people through threats regarding this subject of scientific experiments? The media needs to be questioning everyone on this subject.

      Experts usually explain it to grad students etc (people who will understand scientific language and technicality)
      If you want to understand it without learning more in depth stick to popsci

    As others have mentioned here, there is a device out there called IteraCare. There are multiple versions of this "blow dryer" that range in price from $430US for the classic to over $4,000US for the Pro version. I would REALLY appreciate your opinion on these devices. Such as... are these devices just a scam? (a blue light for aiming, a blow dryer for heat, and I have to assume some other part of the device responsible for producing the terahertz beam.) These devices range in power from 600 watts to 1500 watts, are hand held, and plug into a normal wall outlet.

    My question is: Will ITeracare will work accurately if the unit has a electrical input freq of 50Hz and will be plugged into 60Hz power supply? I have learned that mismatch of power supply with regards to cycles/freq will cause the machine to run faster or slower. Like in the case of quartz clock or atomic clock where they resonates thru its oscillator to produce the required clock frequency. In the same way Iteracare also utilizes quartz resonator to produce the necessary output optical freq of 100 GHz-- 10 TeraHz. Moreover the mismatch power supply could make the machine run faster and makes it to hot easily. Thus provide possible shorter life of the unit.

    What would you recommend for terahertz wand. Majority of them have .3 THz i’ve heard that another Iteracare has 2-17 therahertz. Please advise, thank you

    Is it possible to close operand, conjugate, and filter the source of the voice to auditory cortex API apk other packages and packets or symply the convectional wave that has been created over some form some sort of through the wire and wireless means to impose their voice skull application. At least limit who can if not take the whole conflation of unwanted signal or voice signal as well possibly other signal transmitting or émission to unknown received recipients that may not be easily be interested and who keep from making and living out lifestyle choice, but educational goals. Could changing a digitally configured baseband and or put filters limit the voice 2 skull effect to the network of groups imposing their mostly unwanted influence and opinions of my life of which has though have depossed or though similar about my body. It's all quite logistically possible just simply limit who can be able. I would like help in accomplishing such ends.

    Even after having a course in THz technology, I still believe this field does not have much potential, and advantage over the other (more explored) parts of the EM spectrum.

      Mathemagician guy, why do you say that the THz regime doesn't have much potential? Is it absorption spectra/current SNR limits or do you think the technological alternatives are better already?
      Would you use raman and nonlinear spectroscopies to access the information in the THz? Are you saying that the information in the THz band is not useful or that you think that it makes more sense to access it differently?
