Well done Jon you did great and your dad is such a good teacher full of advice and nurturing as well like the lads I worked with at Mercedes I remember those oil suckers well Mercedes have had them for years and the oil filter looked a micro version of a Merc one! Took me back many years! Your enthusiasm will help you learn and develop your skills keep up good work Daniel
Cat litter for oil spills, works a treat. Nice to see your old fella checking for the forbidden glitter too... Don't prime oil filters.. that's an easy way to introduce foreign bodies past the filter 😁👍
I've been late to watch ,Jon as I've been under my own 450 swapping the sump.out 😁...that sump plug makes a big difference , I was thinking of putting a magnetic plug in don't know really 🤔.... but yes you made it look easy i struggled just to get under the thing 😂 .... great to watch enjoyed it take care matey 👍 nice one
Jon, this is an easy enough job for you to be starting off with. The only thing I'd do differently is to check the oil level before starting the engine. It isn't strictly necessary to replace the sump plug unless it is damaged or otherwise unable to seal properly. 25Nm seems to be the default torque setting for those plastic oil filter housings.
Nicely done mate. A straight forward job but an important one. Found the channel by sheer chance and glad I did, I've been hooked on the '75 progress. You and your dad are a pleasure to watch.
Getting rid of oil stains; make some paste of washing powder and a wee bit of water. Apply it to the stains. Rub it gently and let it dry and ideally get wet with rain after it. Next time please don’t stick the brush into the filter aperature after you’ve brushed the outside. Cleanliness is key.😊
Good job, you made less mess than my first attempt 😂 our Dads made it look so easy😀 Can’t get my head around engines with no sump plug seems unnatural.
Good video Jon! I’ve done 4 videos of myself tinkering on (to be released soon!) and I only semi know what I’m doing so to be a complete novice and film yourself learning as you go is admirable. Keep it up! See you in a few weeks at Rustival😊
Great job, Very satisfying job. I am not keen on those plastic oil filter casings, your Proton’s will be far easier, with bullet proof metal canister type filter. I saw a YT Vid of a Honda jazz oil change, they ‘ tried ‘ to drain it into a carrier bag, I kid you not, failed miserably
No 450 left the factory with a sump plug, all were designed for suction oil changes - some of the sumps with plugs are rubbish quality, yours looks ok. And I'd be changing the oil at 6 months, 5k rather than the year.
@JonCoupland yep I served an apprenticeship on trucks and the older mechanic would always tell me off, I like the clicks if youre in the market for torque wrenches the halfords ones are brilliant and lifetime warranty I have 50 year old Britools but I bought a set of halfords ones 5 years ago.
so, what can i do to avoid that engine failure? i only drive my 450 in the summer, and i change the oil at least twice during that time, but what ELSE can i do... it's a CDI (they only sold CDI in Canada, not sure why)... i have to suck the oil out too, haven't gotten around to dropping the oil pan and putting a plug in. did buy an adapter so i can use spin on filters.
@@JonCoupland any idea if there is a 'map' of where the grease zerks are? i know where they are - well SHOULD have been - in my ford expedition (nothing that some after market parts didn't fix)... obviously everything that has a bearing should be greased, but what else? i'm going to have to bite the bullet and put new struts and shocks in this spring - OUCH. with the prices, it literally is cheaper to buy a non running one and tear it to pieces for parts!
I had that Omicron version of Covid , Not been jabbed against Covid but weird thing is i never seem to get it as bad as my Uncle who has all 3 jabs ? anyway the most disgusting part of Covid is the green stuff from the nose , Like something out of a horror movie haha , Hope you recover from it too soon Jon , Also i think some mechanics take the mickey as my local one wants £110 to do an oil and filter change but 5 litres of oil like like £30 and a filter is £7 so how can they defend charging £73 labour for a job that takes like 30 minutes at most ?
@@JonCoupland Yeah 👍 I remember when oil and filter change was only £40 and that wasn't a long time back only like 8 years ago but since COVID 2020 all the prices have shot up sadly

Dads got good hard standing to work on
He absolutely has
We all started somewhere in a few years you will have a engine on the kitchin table, subject to Mrs Couplands approval 😊
😂😂 I can see it happening
Or welding the protons up on the front drive

@JonCoupland It didn't go well, Jon ,but I got there a few snaps bolts later 🫣😂👍

Job done well! I change the oil in my 450 every 5000 kms.. using the oil sucker
The oil sucker seems ... Terrible to me
@@JonCoupland oh, I don't mind it.. means you can walk away and check it once it's done - and it's already measured in litres in the collector
@@classicandclunker a good point
Just sent my hubby the link to your channel Jon. 😊 I know he’ll find your videos interesting.
Thanks Caroline 😁
Proper treacle. You did well.
Definitely needed doing eh :) at least I didn't waste my time
There is one of these here in Guisborough - decals across the rear bumper read SMART - arse ............... truthful at leasr
That was on mine when I bought it. Came straight off 😂
Nice bit of tinkering matey 👍
Cheers 😊

Oh wow
You did well I think! My Range Rover has no sump plug, so the only way would be to use a suction pump...
Thanks 😊
Jon,next time might i suggest crushed kitty litter or salt asap to soak spilt oil rather than rubbing it.
Great advice. Thank you

Ah that's interesting. I didn't realise it had an upgraded sump. Learn something new every day
Well done darling 😂
Thanks Hun
@@JonCoupland lol
I Could be wrong, but isn't it supposed to be a copper washer instead of a rubber washer on oil sump plug. 9:48
I normally would agree! Although looking at some online, some have the copper washer, some rubber. Maybe a bit much of a muchness? 😂
You only want to click youre torque wrench once 😮
Remember - learning ;)

Does sound like you are doing everything right 👍 - maintenance is key with the engines. The diesel engine is much more reliable by the way ☺️
