The brown m&m story is explained completely by David Lee Roth in a UA-cam video on his channel. You can look it up. It was about the safety of the road crew and band. If someone skipped the brown m&m clause, they would make them tear the stage back apart and to over everything with a fine toothed comb to ensure safety.

This! This is what I've heard in different ways, several times. It was an indicator for whether or not the local/in-venue team had taken all the right safety steps in the rider too.

I've shown it to a ton of people, as I work in contracts. Everybody loves that story. Proof Dave actually DOES have a conscience in there, somewhere. He's a smart guy, actually.

Agreed because of the size of the lighting rig and effects etc, there were very serious considerations when it came to the structure and supports for the stage. A very serious safety consideration indeed. So if the promoter failed to read the part of the contract about the brown m and ms that meant that they likely glossed over the aforementioned requirements.

    • @josephgus5638
      @josephgus5638 24 дні тому

I heard that it was to ensure that the lighting, p.a. System and things like that would be in order. Alex said that if the m&ms were in place then everything else was. Kind of makes sense

I read Geddy Lee's memoir My Effin Life and worried I might read some things that would change my lifelong love for Rush but the opposite happened. Enjoying the catalog even more now. A brilliant book that any Rush fan must take the time to read.

Agreed! It’s an actual BOOK and not a bunch of ghost-written crap wrapped around a deluge of pathetic whining á la Kiss. The one thing I found funny is that Geddy openly admits to carrying grudges against those that he feels have wronged him in his life. I find that VERY refreshing.

I just watched the Behind the Music doc on Eddie and Wolf Van Halen. You don’t want to watch that one without a box of Kleenex nearby. Quite an eye-opener learning just what Ed went though at the end. Wolf’s descriptions of the final days were utterly heartbreaking. They had the ultimate father/son relationship and I have so much more respect for Wolf after having seen this doc.

In Seattle, DLR came out wasted, raised a bottle of Jack Daniels over his head and fell over backwards unconscious. End of show before it even got started. They returned at the end of the tour and put on an extra long show, but still, we had to buy a second ticket as they didn't honor the first ticket. Not my only experience with VH, though. Loved all the other shows I saw.

I felt the same way when I read the Sammy Hagar autobiography "Red - My Uncensored Life" (I typically only read the "autos", not secondhand accounts). It didn't always paint Eddie in a great light. Sammy wasn't mean about it, but more of a sadness regarding Eddie's decline into addiction. He was also very critical of his own behavior, to be fair. A very good book, though.
Ozzy's autobiography "I am Ozzy" remains my favorite to this day. Funny, interesting, and real...and you can't help but read it in Ozzy's voice.
    Also very good:
Geddy Lee - My Effin' Life
    Dave Grohl - The Storyteller
Scott Ian - I'm the Man
    Rob Halford - Confess
Bruce Dickinson - What Does This Button Do?
Frank Bello - Fathers, Brothers, and Sons
Not an autobiography, but "Nothing But A Good Time" is an excellent firsthand account of the hair bands of the 80s, mostly through direct interviews. Really good read.

I was at Van Halens first concert tour with Van Halen as the opener, next Montrose with Sammy Hagar, and Journey as the headliner. The show was at the State Theater in Dec 1978. I was a young guitar player at the time and all I can say about Eddie is WOW! I was in the 2nd row. Van Halen stoled the show.

Your videos are so cool! You are a fantastic musician, teacher, historian and comedian ( I mean that respectfully!) all rolled into one! Thanks for all the effort you put into making these videos. I’ve learned a lot of music lessons, anecdotes and trivia from you! I have learned that musicians, actors, actresses and other entertainers are dual personalities. Which can be disappointing. I’ve had to realize that I must separate the two… otherwise there would be so many of my favorite songs and movies that I would have to cull from my favorite lists.😢 BTW, you are an amazing musician yourself!🙂

Understanding the madness that produces such amazing music is,... well we don't even understand. It was a different time, you could say it was a "better" time if you don't really have a grasp on what it all was. Misery and madness are apparently the sustenance that greatness requires, but it certainly doesn't always bear fruit. It's a rare result, but sometimes it results in something timeless and absolutely freaking wonderful. Their story is every bit as epic as their music, but we'll never truly know it. Those who do could never say enough. These glimpses are eye opening and only make me personally respect them even more. Thanks for the glimpse! I should really read that book, but I'm a little busy being crazy and learning the guitar on my own. More videos like this please! 🎸

I love the Dave era music just like everyone does, but in my mind their 2 biggest mistakes were firing Michael Anthony (who’s considered one of the nicest guys in rock & an amazing musician). And firing Sammy Hagar. Sammy was & is so talented. He wrote awesome lyrics for the band & he is a really good guitar player which I thought expanded the possibilities for what they could do especially live. He played guitar while Eddie played keyboard & played guitar with Eddie for some songs. Anyway, bottom line is that the golden years of Van Halen were over once Michael & Sammy were out of the band. As good as David Lee Roth was, his voice has not held up well, while Sammy Hagar’s has. Also, they had the benefit of playing some of Sammy’s greatest hits at live shows so it was like 2 concerts in one.

This book was pretty dark due to the author. If you want to read a wonderful book about the origins of the band, read Greg Renoff's "Van Halen Rising." It is researched by an actual history professor. (I actually did the photo restorations for the book.) It covers Van Halen's origins all the way to the first tour. During the making of this book, Greg got close to Ted Templeman, Van Halen's producer. Ted wanted Greg to do his biography, so he also wrote "Ted Templeman: A Platinum Producer's Life in Music." It covers his time with the Doobie Brothers, Van Morrison, Nicolette Larsen, Van Halen, Aerosmith, etc. Both of Greg's books are extremely well-written and will give you a much better outlook on the band than Noel's book did.
Noel's book might have had some inside facts, but was very dour. It read like someone with an axe to grind. Greg's books were AMAZING! (I did photo restorations on the Ted book too.)

    • @MarkMay-cr6bv

Gee, researched by an historian vs. actually being there and living it first-hand. I'll take the latter (and yes, VHR was a great book, but still all anecdotal). You sound like one of those manyt people who worship the musician and don't want to hear anything negative about their heroes. There are mountains of evidence from all manner of musicians and others who worked with or around the Van Halen brothers and DLR that point to the accuracy of Noel's book.

Rock & Roll memoirs have been a major part of my recreational reading over the past couple decades or so. I'm currently making my way through John Corabi's memoir (Horseshoes and Hand Grenades: Tales from the Other Mötley Crüe Frontman and Journeys through a Life In and Out of Rock and Roll). Some of the major ones that I've definitely enjoyed and would love to hear your take on are ones by Joe Perry, Slash, and Sammy Hagar.

Yeah. I think that shows how the things that look spontaneous are actually just a part of the show. It is all rehearsed. It shows a lot of professionalism that isn't really part of this kind of rock band's public image. They want to make themselves look like rock stars who just party on stage. But in reality, it's not much different from theater. The only difference is that in theater, you know that the actors are acting.

Almost all of these are pretty commonly known stories (maybe not the Jehova's Witness part). There are tons of videos out on most of these topics. There was also this rag of a paperback I read in the '90s, which I think had been around since the '80s, that featured a bunch of this stuff (especially the Journey stories). As others have noted, Dave's interview (available on UA-cam) concerning the brown M&Ms is fascinating. Also, it should be noted that Neal Schon and EVH were good friends, and EVH really admired Perry, famously calling him up to propose they do a project together (Steve later regretted not doing it).

When I read Noel's book I also had some discomfort with the passage about Mike. I also told myself that it was due to immaturity. On the other hand, by reading Andrew Bennets' book which takes place in the 2000s, I understood that this contemptuous behavior continues. There was a lot of contempt and unkindness from Eddie. He is our idol, a musical genius, but we should not idolize him, he was not the best human being, he was like everyone else with his qualities and his faults.

The M&M's (and other trap clauses I'm sure) are a safety thing. A big rock show is a construction job, and if the band's instructions aren't followed, especially with wiring, band members and crew members can be injured or killed. A big bowl of M&M's with no brown ones is unlikely to be there as a coincidence. Its a way the band an easily check if the venue paid attention to their instructions. I think it was The Who that demanded that an ice cream sundae be placed in a stainless steel bowl to melt at the side of the stage. They started demanding this after someone got shocked by an improperly grounded mic. Got to make sure they read the rider, and if they didn't, the venue forfeits.

I have no problem with them taking writing credits from someone who didn’t write. If you look, Michael Anthony was worth over $50 million when they did it. So he got that much money because they let him have an equal share when he wasn’t writing. And I love Michael Anthony.

Van Halen Rising is the definitive book on early Van Halen. This book by Monk is considered a joke by most hard core fans. A lot of his stories have been proven wrong - with receipts - especially his claims about the band’s logo and his role in the band’s decisions. But Noel always fell back on, “were you there?” Nope. But I don’t think he was there either. As someone who had to research a lot of those receipts, I wouldn’t believe a single word of this book. Monk was not a good guy.

I’d heard the brown M&Ms story back then. The Beat It story was pretty popular. He didn’t want to even be credited for it. I saw them back when they were great and when they were trashed. DLR was great solo. M Anthony not being in VH later was total BS. love that guy. EVH was a bit ego driven, and he was convinced his ego was right by all the guitar community. My fav album will always be the first and the yardstick the others will be measured.

They treated Michael Anthony so shabbily, but didn’t take anything from a pop song that he didn’t put much effort into. I remember when I read it a few years ago, it made me cringe a lot. I don’t know, it’s sad reading stuff like this. Love the long form vids too.

Now clearly he was drinking and (other) but he was a pro- so he was able to pace himself typically where he could do his show.

Yeah Ed and Allen swapped instruments and so did Dime and Vinny I do believe, or at least Dime would stay home with a guitar and a 6 pack while Vinny would go out to party.
It doesn’t surprise me about Allex getting all the girls. Women love drummers for some reason ( I think they can relate to drummers erratic behavior) it’s always been the drummer who blew off practice to hang out with his girlfriend in my experience bass players don’t have friends or girlfriends they are the most dependable band members unless their mom needs something, they are always around and usually the least helpful lol I’m half way joking about bass players only lol

We all have an image of our idols. But we all have flaws and are human. Imagine being thrust into that Circus 🎪 & becomming megastars. How they treated Michael Anthony really sucked. But he's a happy & rich guy, so he's satisfied with Sammy. And none of it is on Wolf. Who wouldn't want to tour with their son & vica versa. It will be interesting to see how forthcoming Alex's book will be.

I just read this same book about 6 months ago. You missed the two most important things Noel did for the band: 1- He helped Van Halen get in a position where they could re-negotiate their contract with the record company. They were locked in to an absolutely abysmal deal, and Noel got them out of it. Van Halen may have never "made it" without Noel doing that and because of that he made each member of the band tens of millions of dollars that they would of lost out on with their old contract. He literally saved the band!!!! and 2- He helped Van Halen start their own merchandising company for t-shirts, memorabilia, etc. which again over time made each member of the band tens of millions of dollars on top of the new contract. Here's the part that broke my heart - After all Noel did for the band, when Van Halen finished the 1984 tour, they fired him (amidst the whole Roth leaving saga). Now, I can understand that bands sometime need to change management as they progress and circumstances change, but here's the kicker - They fired him and NEVER, and I mean NEVER talked to him again - NOT A SINGLE WORD - EVER! That's the sad truth that made me look at Van Halen as a band in a totally different light. Oh, and yes - they treated Michael Anthony with total disdain. I forget what album it was when they cut him out of ALL future royalties (he still had a share of the merchandising company though). By the time they did that to him he was already set for life as far as money is concerned, so I think that's why he still stayed on board. He just wanted to play, so he was the bigger man for it. Then, some years down the line, they fire him and replace him with Wolfgang. Now that's bad enough, but you know how Michael found out he was fired? - ON THE INTERNET! They didn't even have the guts to tell him to his face!

And whats even funnier is when hagars manager ed leffler came in he renegotiated their contracts and made them even more money than what noel did. I dont think sammy was bullshitting when he said he was surprised by how little money those guys were making when he came in the band. Yea that initial deal sucked, ed, al, and dave were open about that in a 2012 video, but at that same time those guys probably didnt start seeing decent money with noel till diver down or 1984 and even then it wasnt what they should’ve been making.
Then there’s that bullshit with the sparkomatic deal for the 1984 tour that noel fucked up, that’s actually a really funny part of the book.

I read an article back in the day where Eddie was asked about Michael Anthony. in so many words said "he does his job". it was clear he didn't see MA as his equal as a musician, and didn't respect him. it wasn't a surprise Wolfgang took his place.

    • @e.l.norton
      @e.l.norton 28 днів тому

Nobody was Ed's equal. I think Ed's frustration with Mike was that he didn't contribute any music. That's where the lack of respect came from. Even in a 1980 audio interview, he references showing Mike what to play. Not nastily. Just sort of matter of fact. But, I think that resentment continued to build because ALL of the music came from Ed. All of it. Al worked his ass off in creating his parts and helping shape the songs. But, that was all Ed and Al. In that interview from '80 you hear a bit of the burden of it on him. But, I also think you hear more disappointment in him that nobody else came up with music. Mike's greatest contribution were his background vocals. They became signature. But, an "equal" Mike never was.
