    Beautiful portrait of authentic Christian faith of the holy people of Alaska. I appreciate it as a timepiece of the Alaskan Church in the 1980s.

    Peaceful, inspiring documentary. Orthodoxy ia the medicine for all the nations and races of the world.

    Thank you! You have filled with great hope and love. It's so special to hear services in our own language. Christ is Risen!

    I have respect for Eastern Orthodoxy, and I am Lutheran, they kept with the way unlike Rome. I do not think the Reformation would have needed to happen, if the pope would have not had too much power in the west, and if people could have the Scriptures in their own language.

      Dakota Neuman Exactly. Right before I converted to Orthodoxy from Lutheranism, my father asked me "So for the Orthodox the Reformation never happened?" My response: "It didn't have to."

      Geography is one reason every Church is over a hundred miles away, that and I still have
      a few doctrinal questions.

      There were problems with the Roman Catholic Church, to be sure. The "reformation" did not need to happen, I agree. And most people could barely read and the Bible translations were corrupt. Catholics were trying to protect the Scriptures. I am Roman Catholic and I love Eastern Orthodoxy! Lutheranism is boring. Yawn, too worldly and bland. Sorry.

      The reformation was a direct consequence of the Scholastic philosophy of Anslem, Aquinas, etc. Given the theological developments of the 12th through 14th centuries in the west, the reorienting of Christian philosophy from Platonism to Aristotelianism, I don't see how the reformation could have been avoided. The reformers were just building on this and taking it to its logical conclusion.

    Did the orthodox church in Alaska also run residential schools for natives there? If they did so , were they run similar to the ones done by Catholics, with the abuses and all that?

    Kudos to University of Fairbanks (which has a very interesting museum!) for accuracy which is often missing in the lower States. I visited Fairbanks (family) and made a pilgrimage to Sitka. The other connection in California is Fort Ross (Russian) and the Russian Cathedral in San Francisco not far from where Aleut St. Peter of Alaska was killed.

    I hope Orthodox Alaska will continue to resist all the renovation and corruption occurring within the rest of the OCA today.

    Why do they use church slavonic instead of english/their own native american language?
    Greetings from Romania, where we got read of slavonic some centuries ago and use our own language in the orthodox church!

      They use the local native language and church slavonic. In Sitka they use Tlingt, Church Slavonic, English and Yup'ik. This reflects tradition and demographics .

    Orthodox church allow to eat pork for people ?

    • @TheDoomCamel
      @TheDoomCamel Рік тому +3

      Of course, they eat, because in the book of the Acts of the Apostles (15: 28-29) in the New Testament it is said that the Old Testament prohibitions have been lifted (including circumcision).
      In the New Testament, there is a ban on only three types of food: food offered to idols, blood, and meat from slaughtered animals.
