Finally an unbiased review that isnt done by someone who either hates hondas or (like me) is obsessed with them 😂
I'm a DC5cal guy. Cheers bro!!!!! Honda por VIDA!
Yessir, Honda for life
That standard exhaust has had its day 🤣
Exhaust is fine- just needs a standard cat refitting
Whats wrong with it?

I had the pleasure of a 1999 DC2 here in Melbourne (Australia).... in which I clocked up 165,000 kms (from new) & enjoyed 13 track days during my 5.5 years of ownership. I was utterly addicted to the VTEC scream of the B18C engine, the wonderfully slick gearbox, dynamic handling & complete marvel of Honda engineering. Even 17 years on & after driving higher spec cars, the memories of the DC2 remain as some of my best driving experiences ==> I would buy another one anytime, for future track fun!
If you want to buy one again, I've got a CW DC2R all original. Sydney based, hit me up if you're ever looking. No rush as I love it ☺️
LJK Setright was right about Hondas of this time; delicate, poised and with brilliant engines/engineering. The thinking person's performance cars.
I think he had already died when this car came out. He loved his Preludes, my Mum had 6 of them it was a nice car to borrow when I was under 20 years old.
@@r7coo Yes I think you're right. I used to buy Car magazine every month when the columnists were Richard Bremner, Russel Bulgin, Phil 'somebody' and LJK Setright. He was eccentric in a way but judged cars on engineering merit and was certainly qualified himself. I know he loved the Prelude especially with 4ws and am sure he was a honda motorcycle rider.
Ok so I’ve had hundreds of cars, mostly BMW’s and Alfa’s, but a number of Hondas including 5 x Accord Type R’s, two Prelude 2.2’s, and two DC2 Type R’s.
In all the cars I’ve owned, the best chassis by far was the DC2. Without doubt. It’s the most rewarding car I’ve ever, ever driven. As a standard car on 15” wheels, they’re literally unbelievable, just like a race car. So utterly raw.
The worst thing I did to my second Milano Red one was modify it. After Tein Type flex coilovers, whiteline roll bars, bracing everywhere and 16” team dynamics, it was literally ruined, fidgety and prone to understeer.
The best thing I did was a buddy club shirt shift, Tegiwa manifold and decat, and Spoon N1. Crazy, crazy VTEC.
Painted the car twice, then it got exported to Holland. Ended up spending £26000 on it over 4 years, including two resprays and two sets of Honda decals. I stuck a carbon bonnet on in the end as they’re so heavy and rust badly on the leading edge. It started rotting badly under the inner rear arches, so much so that it needed significant welding in Holland. Shame. Rot boxes they are.
Fabulous, fabulous car, as is the Accord Type R.
"rot boxes"? Maybe in the UK. I have 2 of them here in New Zealand - 1 a race car. No sign of rust. They were galvanised except for the roof apparently.
@@Audidude mate they are rotten in the U.K.
@@Audidudebro they rust horribly… I’ve got holes in the trunk of mine because water seeps in through the taillight seals and fills up the trunk if it sits outside… I’ve also got two holes in both quarter panel from rust.
I had a UK dc2. I loved it very much. Mine was special as it was the car photographed for the top trumps playing cards. I went on too a civic ep3 and then a Renault sport Mégane. I now have a BMW m135i and the fact is.....none of them have the dc2s magic.
Not sure if it was the modified exhaust or the microphone, but when these engines enter V-tec zone, they sound like F1s and not the tinny noise heard here. The gear change are one of the best even to these day.
Fab, glad to see you finally got behind the wheel of one. I will NEVER sell my DC2
Haha same for me, have you got any mods ?
@@JohnDoeAnonyme small ones. Interior and exterior are stock. Front brakes, disks pads and hoses are upgraded. Decat and a skunk 2 manifold. Just refreshed the suspension all round. Gearbox has carbon syncos fitted and a lightened flywheel. Run the standard 15" wheels as it rides better. I run R888 on it all the time as it's by no way a daily. Only does about 1k a year. It's a UKDM car is Starlight black. I'm 2nd owner and has only done 71k miles :)
Sell me your dc2.... Let the new generation experience the glory of old school vtec!!!
@@trick_show9469 my son has already said " when you're dead, it belongs to me!"
@@Griphook1 damn!!! I'm in love with hondas, and it's a shame that there isn't a lot of the old school type R's about. I've looked at the DC2, and they are hard to come by. And I understand there is something special about old school VTEC, before it was refined to what it has become today. I mean I have an I-VTEC and that is what made me fall in love with hondas, it's probably hondas weakest engine in terms of power (99bhp) but it's a joy to drive
I agree with your comments on FWD cars, I used to ignore them before, and boy, I missed the point completely.
I remember the first time I went in one of these, I was probably 10 or 11 and my father was replacing the cam belt on it for a friends daughter. I will never forget the rev counter around at 8 thousand rpm, something I had never heard experienced before!
Now that you have driven so many great cars. I would like to see a shortlist of all the best useable cars for a given budget, such as £10K.
This, maybe towards the end of the year we could get a recap of your best drives.
This months top gear mag has a feature on just that.
Excellent idea
I don't know how this has only 7000 views, this has the production value of a top gear episode. Keep going bro
He has great production value. Im watching this at 1 week old and it's got 18k views
Jay. I loved the camera angle that you did for the Integrale where it was a POV view from the drivers perspective. How to immerse viewers in the video 101. Can you include it in all videos from now on?
Jay, I love the videos but you need to find some way of recording the intake noise a bit better, I don't think I'm alone in saying I don't really care what the exhaust of this car sounds like and that extends (at least for me) to most of the other cars. Been a long-time viewer and I love the format of everything and how it has evolved, but you absolutely need to find a way to get better intake sound noise even if that means better cabin mics or placing a mic by the air filter or something. Especially true with a car like this where intake noise is a sizeable part of the experience! Cheers
x100
Interesting fetish. The new Dyson will rock your world!
Absolutely. I've never understood why people would think that crap sound from the exhaust is worthy to put in a video let alone record it in the first place, intake noise is the only sound you want to hear from a Honda.
@@HashDogg06 Look on the bright side, it could have been the sound of a rotary...
Good point. When recording exhaust tones, I've found that a Tascam works pretty good when doing higher level productions. Other than that, I use the Rode mounted to GoPro.
08:56 ... LOVE how you can actually hear and then see V-TEC kicking in ... Great review keep them coming Jay 👍
Something you dont notice on modern Hondas
@@chrissyboy7047 Because they have continuously variable valve timing which is better for power and efficiency across the rev range and varying with load demand. I would prefer V-TEC but unfortunately it can't really be justified now from an engineering point of view. Maybe in the case of modern sports cars it would be nice to have auto sport mode, where it kicks in over a certain RPM and then you get a sudden switch in valve, spark, fuel timing.
I've always said: I would do horrible things to own this car
Been waiting for you to do one of these! Miss my old one dearly. They are amazingly engineered for this price point. Can't imagine how good they felt back in 1996.
I'm guessing JDMs must be different from European or USDM Honda's with regards to corrosion. I had a USDM Civic Coupe, 20 years old and the only rust was on the coil springs and that was it!
@@psions555 The cars weren't particular different with regards to corrosion resistance irrc it was more the fact that the Japanese don't use salt on their roads.
@@robbanjac5553 really coastal climate though can't help surely?
Listening to that engine above 8k rpm has just made me want a 911 GT3 the noise is immense!
Super road test again - I'd love to own it for a couple of weeks just to give it a massive clean up!. Part of owning motors like this is the actual taking care of a 4 wheeled legend. I'd be tinkering with it forever. 😊
a lot of people see this as a downside but its part of the fun and why these are enthusiast cars
Ah the 96 spec teg😍 dream car the lighter one and still pure driver focused perfection
98 spec is better in every way possible
Driven ferraris, supras, nissan gtrs, bmws etc.. this car sticks to mind as one of the great performance driving cars
had one 14 years ago...Great car!
Had one for 16 years and agree it was a great car. Great banter on the dc2 forum too
Yep, longest time I owned a car the DC2, wonderful.
That exhaust sound........YIKES!
Bloody loved my DC2!!
Not experienced a DC2 yet, but would love to see you review a DC5. Had mine for 5 years of fun hassle free driving so far.
Weren't the DC5s grey imports?
@@chrispalmer3096 yep that's correct. A company imported mine from Japan to the UK
DC5 chassis compromised by substitution of McPherson struts for the double wishbones of the DC2 - tragic because the DC2 is so good. Friends who race them constantly complain they can't tame the front end like you can with the DC2.
I have an Integra DC2 as well! I just finished putting in my built B18 and it is so much fun to rip on. You can rip through all the gears without breaking too many laws 😂
The Honda Integra Type R DC2 is a great fun family car.
Been waiting for this review for the longest and I missed when you uploaded it which was on my birthday😳 great cars, owned mine for about 3 years, onto a DC5 now but would definitely own one again.
I wouldn't say the "final word", later came the dc5 and then the fd2, both FWD, 8400rpm redline, higher compression, a refined VTEC and larger displacement at the expense of some weight increase (60kg with the DC5) and nicer interiors. I own a DC5 but I would say the DC2 would make me happier on track days.
I want to add an FD2R to go with my DC2R
I remember driving one of these and the Accord TypeR. Both were excellent and I so wish I could have convinced the company I was working for it could work as a company car. Had to go for something far more mundane.
Japan had also released some 4dr Teg's. The front still the same but the rear end is a bit different. it will also be a perfect company car
Absolute legend of a car. Most fun I've had in a car.
Sounded like a can of angry hornets when you let it rip.

Dc2r, one of my favourite care of all time, genuinely fun, feels special, super reliable (beat on a few of them for years with nothing every going wrong ) no car will give you this amount fun reliably until you get into the Porsche world
Miss my old 98 dc2!
Fuck, I had written the DC2 off as unobtainable and just a silly old pipe dream already and now you have to make a video on one. Now I want it again...
Get one soon before USA drives prices up in 2021
You can pretty much replace the Integra with any Type R from the late 90's to 2005 and the review would be pretty much identical. All we're so nice to drive. The FN was only let down with its rear suspension and being a bit fat. Unfortunately they carried on that trend with the FK, which in my opinion is the best looking Civic.
I've had a few Type's over the years. Going through another lonely period where I'm missing VTEC a lot. Found this vid and hoped Jay would put me off. He didn't.
Always wanted one of these but the rust has put me off, once you see one that looks ok from the outside being cut open to reveal masses of corrosion that's enough to scare you.
100% especially as everyone is asking for over 10k for one of these now, sure a clean one fine but people with cars way over 100k miles that have been kept outside are asking for 10k which is a hell of a lot for a car that has or will rust badly. Especially when you consider that in the current market the S2000 is actually cheaper than the dc2 for a better car in better condition!!
Gotta buy JDM ... nearly had my fingers burnt with a UKDM in the past.
@@scwarzewaffe85 JDM can be just as bad unless fresh off the boat. Though the Euro spec ones had rear wheelwell covers which actually made the rust more likely. One major issue is that a joint where the inner wheelarch joins the sills is open when it should have been sealed. Water gets in and the next thing you know are small bubbles on outside, large rot on the inside and big bills. This fault seems to be only on the R's as I noticed JDM Integras in the rest of the range have closed seams there.
I've always been paranoid about the tinworm and growing up having relatives who are into classics increased this. When I got my Type R I flooded the sills and everywhere else I could with waxoyl and latterly bilt hamber wax and examine and top it up once a year. At this stage I've probably added the same weight in wax that Honda took out in weight saving. 😄 Though 15 years on, daily driver, parked outside in all weathers and zero rust.
@@MrGrentch so simple yet so effective. surprised why manufacturers didn't just waxoyl the whole chassis during production would have added pennies to the cost of each car.
@@kenzohkw At the time Honda sent their dealers instructions on how to do just that with all their models(I found a copy on ebay), but it seems customers didn't go for it for some reason? Though when new they had IIRC a 5 year anti (visible)corrosion warranty. The visible part is the thing. On the Tegs anyway, by the time you see a coin sized area of bubbles on a rear wheelarch, it's usually a horror story below.
I had a Japan import 2000 DC2 Type R-x on Ohlins suspension. That car handled so good.
That exhaust is crying out for retirement
I think JayEmm on Cars has driven almost all type-Rs. He should put video with ranking of them all :) As a owner of DC2 and EP3, I am curious how they compare.
What would you rank them?
@@patrickbateman7122 :) EP3 is my daily and I rank it higher as a daily. But I rank DC2 as better 2nd car for track days and weekends. I own EP3 for 15 years now, and I bought DC2 later 8th years ago. I don't think I would buy EP3 as a daily, if I owned dc2 first. If I had to own just 1 car, it would be EP3, but If I had to replace one of them, I can see better daily cars as EP3 that I can afford. So looks like DC2 on top for me. But they are similar and I love them both, and at least for now I am not planning to sell any of them.
@@pirotehs interesting. I've never driven either. I've got a BRZ and i bet a DC2 would be a much better raw drivers car. My old clio Williams was so much more fun than my BRZ..
Seriously huge props to you James for finding a JDM import instead of a Euro one.
Yes the JDMs are amazing compared to an EUDM🤷🏼♂️😂
I'd love you to list the differences and the actual amount of difference in performance over the UK cars that the JDM has......
There's a lot of mythical BS spouted about the JDM models.
This particular model being driven above has WORSE brakes in comparison to a UKDM for starters. 260mm diameter front and 240mm diameter rear for the 'superior JDM' vs 280mm front and 260mm rear. So the UKDM has better brakes.
So glad you did this review, my dad used to own one. Fabulous cars.
Awesome video and bang on with the description. Loved mine and should never of sold it.
This gets a thumbs up just for the 8.5k soundtrack.. Great little cars and a bonkers and utterly extreme engine..
The garage I use for repairs has got one which has been mapped to about 250bhp it's an awesome car sounds amazing
I've got a em2 coupe, with a k20a2 engine and gearbox from the ep3 type r, wich is an evolution of the b18c series engine,
Mine has been tuned to 249 Whp and like you say, its an amazingly fun ride...
The feeling you get when the v-tec come's in , hitting the limiter at 8.500 rpm ... it's really heavenly stuff 😅🥳
What a treat to stumble onto your channel.
Everytime a drive by comes on screen my brain just starts playing the NFSU soundtrack :)
Bada dum dum dum😂😂😂
This dc2 is in need of some good oem tlc, great thing about them is that they will go as if they were fresh out of the dealership.
Was once a passenger in one of these on a far too fast run from Southampton down to Lyndhurst. I was glad of those seats. Simple lovely bit of kit.
Great review, Jay, thank you. A DC5 on the cards for comparison?
There’s no possible comparison between Dc5 and Dc2.
@@F355Driv3r I don't understand your comment. You can compare literally any 2 cars to one another, which includes a DC5 to a DC2. I think what he's asking for is a completely reasonable thing to request and want to see, myself included.

Knew of a Scott years back who owned one in Warrington. Not sure if this is him. Well, he was more of my sister's friend. But I knew of him, he owned a type R. So few of them about even then such that whenever I spotted one it was him! Recall they had less sound deadening to save weight, inc. a lighter windscreen. Good to hear they hold up to being a GT car, did not expect that.
Only car I regret selling! Truly fantastic, if space and bank balance allowed I would have another. What a car! On the e46 m3 front you have been unlucky as this is the car I have owned the longest!!!
I’m a tad late to the party but this particular review reminds me of my first Honda; a great car. The engine, the drive, handling, and accessibility to replace anything is amazing. Honda really makes you feel great behind the wheel.
Used to own a UKDM Milano Red DC2 about 10 years ago, only had 50k miles on the clock. Bought it for £4600 and sold it a year later for £6k. The only thing I found was with the standard 15" wheels the tyres would roll quite a lot on the rim due to large side wall area. The JDM DC2's from memory had a standard 16" wheel. Non the less great cars.
Milano red! So awesome. 96 97 JDM had 15” where 98 + got the 16”. I run 15s on track because I love how cheap they are to replace. RE71R
In the US the Acura Integra DC2 Type-R is incredibly sought after and prices are now often over $50,000 for an all-original clean example. They also are notorious for being stolen.
50,000? 😂 You can pick one up for £20k with around 50,000 miles in the UK
@@asifnoaman8978 They’re far more common and available in that market, and I’m specifically talking about the USDM Acura Type-R, not JDM imports.
@@mindspinn311 They're not so common in the UK or Europe anymore and Europeland got its own domestic market cars just like the US and Australia/NZ/Canada. Being RHD nations you'd generally only see direct JDM imports in the UK and Ireland. We had a big JDM scene here in Ireland and a few years back two grand would get an Integra Type R(Original Irish market cars were very rare). Markets differ of course and the US market has always been different and of late has gone a bit nuts on values of modern classics. Bring a trailer didn't help. Unless you're a seller of course. 🙂

Always nice reviews. I think yhe Toyota Altezza RS200 is a good car for a review by you as well. Happy to provide one for you.
Spent about 2 hrs terrorising the black wall tunnel in a DC2....back when you could pretty much go flat out through there. 3rd gear windows down, just shy of the redline. I preferred the twin projector lights though. Motorist moved over when those appear in their mirrors at night.😇
Honda is reviving the Integra, but whether it’ll be sold in the UK is yet to be confirmed.
Only 4 thousand i believe you might mention this later (currently only a minute in...). A female colleague at work had one and traded it towards a 350z convertible. I was devastated! This will escalate as more young ones discover how cool they are. And, unlike many others and like the Jordan civic, they are 😎 AND rare as hens teeth.
Being somewhat burned by your lukewarm view on my current car (M2C) I did worry how you would find one of my previously owned cars! Glad to see & hear you enjoyed. It remains the favourite car I’ve owned. I recall the way it settles into a bend but that is very dependent on tyres. The original fit bridgestones were better at masking this. I wouldn’t necessarily go back to one (mines was a 3 year old 6k miles when I bought it) but I’m glad I owned one!
Fair play mate! You see folks it's not about rwd is better than fwd or vice versa..it's how the car makes you feel. I'm on my 2nd GT86 and love rwd but it will never be as much fun as my clio Williams..
In my opinion the longer wheelbase compared to the Civic is not a bad thing..... less likely to do the 3 wheel cornering as so often seen with the shorter FF types.
197bhp is plenty enough....... and I can have fun with 140 *allegedly* in my old heap (awaiting parts 🤮).
Great review. Thanks James 👍
The Integra has a shorter wheelbase then the Civic. The overall body length is longer on the Integra vs. the Civic.
Loving the Integra, Here's hoping many nice example survive
On my second Canadian ITR. Love these cars!
Having driven many FWD cars. The DC2 was the best overall handling FWD hatch, although....! I found the Peugeot 205 Gti to be slightly better in the tight twisty sections.
Owned a UK DC2 a good few years ago, most fun car I've ever had. Mine had an aftermarket exhaust so it was unbearable on motorways as they rev so high (4k+RPM at 70)
Long time coming, this review. I've been out for a passenger ride in one of these. Sounds fantastic, didn't feel like much power. At the time I had my Clio Williams and would've loved to compare them but said owner wasn't up for a swap to compare.
So James, as you've had the chance to drive both. Which is best??
Grear review as ever, you can't beat the sound of a VTEC going bwaaah in the morning😂 J I love the way your preconceptions are being blown away by driving old JDM cars which on my big fan off. Integras are legendary front wheel drive cars on a par with it which I own in the Japanese car of the year was the Mitsubishi FTO another great more powerful front wheel drive car proved again that you only need 200 roughly horsepower and a good handling car have a naturally aspirated multi valve times engine to have fun, the power of a JDM guys got out of their Moses was very impressive showing you don't need a 3-litre or massive turbo to have have fun on British b roads.👍

That's how AMAZING thoses integras are(first name says it all basically stating 'above n beyond')models are truly exceptional in handling and their closest machine I've experienced to a full track non road car 200hp from a 1.8 non turbo unit all motor smh most companies today can't make that without a turbo.. @Simp Nation golf 1.8 turbos mk4 released sametime as integras made 150hp renault clio sports 2.0ltrs made 172 hp the later version 182 make exactly that compare to honda that's 20hp down dispite having a larger engine nothing wrong about truth if u don't believe look it up. All facts but it's upto u what u want to believe
@Simp Nation I recognise some of thoses companies the most appealing u mention being that bmw e46 m3 unit number code remember not all reached hondas level dispite being kinda simular that vtec icing on the cake honda smashed it best under 2ltr na engine avaliable you are correct I do understand as there is a few good units around but please take into consideration how many car companies around the globe there are let alone separate engine manufacturers that car makers do business with worldwide but yeh personally from my personal experience and I have alot honestly no shit, its honda all the way again it's just my personal experience so don't take a axe to my head ok lol (thump up)

Helical LSDs, good because they're smooth and progressive and have no clutches to wear out, bad because if one wheel loses ALL traction the LSD can't transfer any torque to the other wheel so it's no better than an open diff.
As a fellow dc2R owner & driver I thought I'd share this with peeple to see if its just mine or can other owners do this with their dc2R? Mine is stock - no mods MY'01.
One day i was on UA-cam watching a dc2 review from I think it was - Chicago Cars Direct when the presenter mentioned that manual Hondas have a "friction pt" as well as a "take-off pt" in the clutch travel. So one day as i pulled away from a green light i did the following,
1) pushed clutch all the way down,
2) pulled 1st into 2nd gear, at about 4000rpm (no need to hit vtec or redline),
3) let the clutch out about 1/4 of the way,
4) tapped the throttle all the way down (very quickly) before releasing,
5) then let the clutch up to about 1/2 way,
6) pushed the throttle pedal all the way down this time and kept it down.
I got an unbelievable rush of power that pushed me so hard into my recaro seats, it felt like they were gonna break. It was just an AMAZING rush of power i would say 10X more powerful than what u get from vtec. In fact compared to vtec, it makes vtec seem like nothing at all!
I dont know if the engineers intended it to do this but i do know it works & its UNBELIEVABLE!!!
Sadly, I've only managed to do it a handful of times it's hard to do just right)
Try this with your dc2, & then tell me if u experience the same? If so, it's time to let the secret out guys!
In Gran Turismo 2, the FTO was the best FWD car by a mile!
Why do these cars sound like they have a loose spring rattling about in the exhaust? I think your comment about modern performance cars is bang on, I can imagine they are completely frustrating as the only way to get the performance you paid for is to do a track day or use a disused airfield or some such thing. I want a car like that where you can thrash it to within an inch of its life and not be braking the speed limits .... too much! :)
Loved my JDM one, drove the wheels off it and embarrased alot of turbo cars of the era. Will always remember driving it and repeatedly taking the mick out of a Sapphire cozzy.

People are even selling bmws, at least those that aren't 100k plus miles and that don't have the rearsubframe made of cardboard issue, at silly prices.
I've been after an s14a/s15 for a number of years and every year i save i get no closer because the price of the cars just go up and up.
AutoTrader prices are really to scalp people, these regularly come up for sale between 4-10k
That front head actually looks better than the 4 circled lights. Wonder y they chose the circle lights over those in the u.s. market
ONLY £10k for a Type R??? Where? I’ll buy one right now! They are going for £18-24k + here in the US!
Why not ship one over from the UK when they're officially allowed to be?
Need to get a DC5 on next
What happened to DC3 and DC4?
Concentration implies resistance, whereas in attention there is no form of resistance. Resistance arises when there is fear. When you give attention, there is no entity who attends. When the brain is aware of how inattentive it is, then that very awareness of inattention becomes attention.
Great videos Jay!
Thanks!
Chassis wise it's quite well matched by the FTO GPX top of the range model, handles so so well but there's a little more excitement in the integra! Me and my step dad were lucky to have both between 2005/6.
I love this cars. Always wanted to add on to the collection but here in Europe they are rare to find and expensive. I have a lovely white CH1 Accord Type R that I just fininshed restoring.
James, made any comparisons to your S2000 yet? Like gearbox, steering, ride?
like the classic 80s theme on the end credits!

Don't know about the UK but here in the US you can't daily one because they get stolen so frequently. I knew a guy who went to have lunch at his dads work parked out front for 30mins and the car was gone when he came out, he also had lojack on the car and still they got away.
