This is a common issue with all Contax TVS cameras. If you have one, it's living on borrowed time sadly. The part number is COPAL AEL-1011 and can be found on eBay. As specified in the repair manual, it was recommended that service providers replace the entire lens unit (so much so that only the attachment point of the flex cable to the body is even drawn in the guide. The rest of the cable is non existent). This is why if you contact Nippon Photoclinic in NYC, they'll charge $200 for their base fee and $300 for the lens unit part. To fix the cable yourself, you must desolder the original cable from the lens unit, and solder the new one on. If anyone can successfully repair this issue, please let me know. I'm going to give my shot at it, and if successful, will make it incredibly public as I don't want to see these cameras die. Thanks.

I was about to buy a TVS ii when I started reading about these cables and it has turned me off of the camera. They look awesome, but I'd hate to spend $700 on a camera for it just to break in 3 months lol. I'm going to subscribe to your channel. I hope you make a video of your repair.
I thought the same.. but some effort into deep research usually helps. I would recommend you check out PPP camera repairs based in the UK. There is also some young dude in Russia who runs his business through facebook. These are the two strongest leads I have whom I have contacted and confirmed that they've repaired several well known premium p&shoots and still offer the service. Of course, don't bother asking if you have a problem paying well for the service.. these are really difficult to fix. Do drop them an inquiry before buying the camera if you're concerned.
i haven't even touched the zoom ever since I got the tvs out of fear :) Using as 28mm prime.

Yeah it also happened to me after 3 months of use. In my case, the display always went off if I use slow shutter speed below 60. Whats is the update of your TVS? do you repair it by yourself?

Hey Jack, im looking for some advice. I've bought a Contaxt TVS and everything looks ok other then I can't hear the autofocus. How would I tell that the autofocus is working without having to put a film through the camera?
Teivel Yes. Look through the manual and you should be able to find a section in the custom functions that tell you have to have the lens pre focus then you press down the shutter

I do have the same issue but it only happens sometimes like 1 or 2 times on a 36 roll and works perfectly fine after.
damn mine has exactly the same issue。。。now im happy to know the issue and sad to know mine is beyond repairable

@@jackwiegmann hey Jack! Sorry somehow i missed your message until someone else "liked" my comment yesterday 😅😅. Here in Japan there's a company specialized in fixing contax cameras. I reached out to them for a quotation, and it was around 350 US dollars + minimum 6-month waiting in queue..... that's more than I can take so I waved goodbye to my tvs 🥲🥲

Already fix mine,
Although the problem was a loose spring on the lens, but nevertheless I had to disassemble the whole thing.

Tip: put some lacquer thiner on the shooter assy thread to soften the glue.
And remember to discharge the flash capacitor.
