you need more off-highway electrification content. This was great!

CAT's a great company, just wish they would embrace the Right2Repair philosophy unlike John-Deere. ;)
@@BillAnt So TRUE
I agree !
I love a person who knows what they're selling. I can't tell you how many times I went to an event and the salespeople were just repeating what was on the sign.
This was super great! John was knowledgeable and overall a super great guy who is in the right place.
i really wanted to know why he made that face when kyle said we can have that kind of charging in trucks aswell. What is the degradation looking like on those battries?
I don't know what "face" are you referring to. Could you point out time of the vid so I can look? I'm not sure which part you have in mind.
@@patriksteffan2060 face at 21:50. context starting at 21:34
@@a-don13 When I saw it I didn't think of it as anything strange. Just face of something like: "Yeah other can too if they manage to build something like that- nothing really stops them"
Degradation doesn't maybe know even them bc it's new. I think the high performance is possible bc of : High voltage, high cobalt for cathode and silicon for anode - I heard those have a positive impact on fast charging, great cooling - industrial machinery so that would explain too.
John was amazing! So much knowledge and he can present it so elloquently.
Wow this guy is a great communicator and professional and knowledgeable salesman. Every possible negative was dealt with a professional and reasonable touch. With people like him I'm confident that CAT will grow as things change. Great stuff CAT!
It was bring your mom and daughter to work day. 22:00
This was great! You can understand that Cat had a head start with using large electric motors in their mining trucks, but this demonstrates that they didn’t stop with diesel power. Good show, Kyle/Alyssa! Congrats on 200k subs!
Definitely go to the Cat proving ground. John is a great communicator.
Excellent report.
John sure knows his EV stuff.
Had no idea CAT was doing any of this.
Thanks!
Yes, please do more of this content. This is awesome.
In other words, the diesel machines run all day but are only operating for half that time, so 4-6 operational hours does the job. This sort of pragmatic and practical analysis is how many businesses are assessing electrification I imagine. Brilliant
exactly, so many arguments delivered especially for the crowd that thinks electrification really needs 1:1 Diesel/batteries. I'm certain they or other major producers also involved in agriculture will deliver solutions so that a harvester can run 16h a day with a couple of standardized HVDC powerpacks being swapped next to the field (either rented or for universal use around the farm optimizing the use of peak PV production.
Really cool to see what's going on with the construction/earth-moving side of things. Thanks to John and Out of Spec!
Fantastic!!! Would love to see more content with this gentleman, CAT, and heavy equipment!!
This video was great, thanks for showing us some of the less seen battery technologies out there! Love what CAT is doing, and John was so much fun to listen to, I could listen to him explain these systems for hours. Thanks much!
Excellent interview with John on the CAT products in electrification and love it. We need more of this. Look at the size of the 64Kwh battery pack? That can easily be used in conjunction with an inverter to power your home for days with a nice form factor. Thanks Kyle for sharing this.
Great show. Thought I would share a story that is related and involving giant EV equipment from Europe that I saw about a year ago. There is a mining operation in Switzerland which uses the biggest earth mover in the world (at that time at least) that will only need to be charged once and will work like the perpetual motion machine. They Charged it up at the base of a mountain, and drove it up empty to be loaded with rock or marble at the top. The earth mover then brings the load down the mountain to be unloaded and process or loaded to trucks. The regeneration breaking coming down is more that the energy needed to go back up the mountain empty, and thus on one charge, the equipment will continue to work without further charging. Reminds me of my Dad's story of walking uphill in the snow to school in the snow and uphill home. Only this one is true. Take care and keep the information coming. Thanks
Great Job Kyle. As CAT engineer I was so happy to see some solid CAT content on the channel! We have a lot going on in the electrification space.
Go CAT!!! Yes to more CAT content!!!
One of the best if not the best presentation/ interview you’ve done, Kyle.
Used to work for CAT and I remember the talkings of this process starting around 2017. Pretty cool to see it finally happening. Super interesting video, thanks
The Peoria Proving Grounds is just about an hour down the road from the Rivian factory in Normal. They also have one in Tucson - probably doing testing for these in both places :)
Great video, love to see coverage of these EV adjacent areas including heavy duty trucking!
A machine you have to add many tons of counterweights to anyway was basically the perfect use case for battery power, it's amazing it took this long.
I think a video of all that stuff in action would be really cool, and if you can get a ride in one of those mining trucks the size of a cathedral that would be double points.
This is was awesome! Thanks John for the wonderful showings and I would definitely like to see more of this
This was really interesting and I'd love to see more videos and info on what CAT and others are doing including demo videos of the equipment running.
Long time listener, first time caller!😂 I get it, John, because I'm an old man too. I don't know that Kyle got it.
I own & operate a Terex PT50 (equivalent to a ASV RC50) compact skid steer loader, and it would be a FAR superior machine if it were battery electric. I'm currently burning 6 litres of diesel per hour in my Terex and it's very noisy in the cab. An electric motor driving each track would deliver a higher travel speed and greater torque, so I could drive this machine up slopes with a fully loaded bucket (all up around 4 tonnes) with no reduction in speed. Plus it would be quiet. I want one tomorrow!
Never gonna need these myself, but would be interesting to see in action!
I'd definitely love to see you look at Cat's stuff yearly to keep up with things we don't normally see. Also go out on a job site with an actual customer without Cat over your shoulder.
Looking at usage profiles / analytics to help determine your engineering choices. I love it when companies to this, rather than saying "this is the way we've always done things! Our machines must make big 'vroom-vroom noises' ". Thumbs up for CAT for that bit alone. 👍
Edit: excellent interview and subscribed because of this. Also my compliments to John. This is really the kind of knowledgable person you would want in your company for this kind of work. 10/10 would buy from him and CAT if I had a mining or construction business. 😆
This was your sexiest episode to date. I love large mining equipment due to a longtime mining connection.
Super excited to see this stuff going battery-electric so we don't have to haul those long heavy electric cables around.
For those not in the know, in many mines electric equipment is used for various reasons, and today those trail a huge cable.
Looking forward to seeing more of this content!
John was great. Personable and informative.
This is quite remarkable. The entire presentation was done in a single recording. Top notch!
This has got to be the best electrification content I’ve seen in ten years!
This is cool A lot of the time on a job site they will have a Spider Box which is Power Distribution Box: 120/240V AC, 30 A Amps, L14-30P, (4) L5-20R GFCI, 3 Poles, 4 Wires so they could easily hook up a portable charger to it with the appropriate cable adapters
Fantastic video, the electrification of mining is such an important area that needs to be covered. It is certainly a critical cog in the EV and renewable wheel and one that the naysayers keep throwing in our faces.
lol!!!! which naysayer?! diesel is literaly what makes everything possible from batteries to renewables to transportation(maritime, aviation, agriculture......) what are the useless EVs doing!? even to make roads, bridges, power stations, the grid, water supply......
Great content Kyle ! Greetings from Belgium.
Solid . 🎉thank you for this it was very eye opening
Great! Excellent conversation there.
Yo, I need that thing in my backyard!!!
Great video !!
Wow, very insightful video. John was great at explaining everything.
John was awesome, super exciteable and knowledageble, I liked seeing the other CAT employees at the end like "should we intervene?" and the other one was like "nah, let him cook, he's got this"
I think they might have listened in as not all the more casual enquries at the stand run as deep as the conversation we just heard
Excellent interview. More please!
Well done!
Great presentation.
Love it. Definitely give me more.
Wow . . . Cats really put forth the Right Guy to present their Product Lineup. Nice to see Cat's Rep has
a real handle on the Tech going on at his company. Super Presentation!
This is really fascinating. Thank you Kyle for covering non car EV content, hope to see more! Maybe look into electric Tractors, also v cool!
This was awesome!
CCS ( ISO15118 ) can be implemented for lower voltage(some chargers even do)! Even with this connector.
Most of the small equipment will never get used for actual work more than 6 hours a day. From a maintenance cost perspective alone it makes a whole lot of sense to have electric over a diesel.
Great job J.T.!!
great video
Cool to see these go electric. Less exhaust in the work area is always good.
Awesome!
This was fantastic. CAT is doing some incredible stuff.
an amazing video eye opening
Super interesting.
Love this content! More off-highway electrification videos pleaaaaaase!
This was great! CAT has always been pretty forward thinking and it's awesome to see they are going all in on electric.
Wow excellent content plz more like this
I would love to see some of these machines in action. Thanks for another great video!
Yes, more of this. For two reasons. 1) the sustainable energy transition is coming to construction and mining equipment too; and until quality EV tech channels start following & communicating advancements in these markets specifically, your EV automotive expertise will really do a great job to initiate coverage. 2) wrt SpaceX Mars missions & planetary explorations-which Starship is going to enable-neither Tesla nor SpaceX has not had the time/focus to develop these EV alternatives that will be required. No diesel or gasoline on Mars. Caterpillar already has the mining/excavating equipment experience! With Cat moving into EV tech now, CatEV equipment become instant starting points (with telerobotic or autonomous control, and non-air-cooled heating/cooling solutions) for the sorts of equipment that will be needed right away to operate in the low-pressure environment of Mars to support SpaceX early missions.
Yes this is Awesome! I love all those products, you are awesome!
Great camera work
Amazing! CAT has always been the best..and still the best going forward.
Thanks for a view on this part of transformation to an electric powered future.
Congratulations to CAT, a great company doing great things. Can't wait to see some big BEVs at the Proving Ground😃
Very cool video
Much more!!!
Those are great concepts. thanks for sharing.
one could even realize a true of grid construction. run it via solar and a big buffer battery.
or if the AC connection is weak. trickle charge it over night, when no one is working and you are set for the day.
thanks
Cool to see what other industries are doing in electrification.
Thank You for All that you are doing for our Planet Earth.. Peace.. Shalom.. Salam.. Namaste.. 🙏🏻 😊 🌈 ✌ ☮ ❤
Great presentation! I would like to see these machines in action, and get real-world comments from the workers to see its benefits.
Retired electrican and ran great CAT gen sets up to 2,000 KW. Nobody is supplying accurate running times for EV when its zero degree F outside and you have to provide heat & a defroster for the driver. Somebody did a U tube vidio on a EV truck pulling his maximum load of 11,000 #'s during cold weather and could not travel even 50% of rated battery distance without towing a load. Great ideal having air cooled on the 700 amp plug & cable.
Diesel electric has been around for decades. It's not hard to imagine the leap it will take to get to replacing the diesel with electric in some industries. Excellent interview.
That's awesome!! And of course we want to see this stuff in action! See if CAT can arrange something with you and a customer :)
Love the analogy to the EV space 10 years ago. Will be interesting to see some of these machines re-built from the ground up as a full "EV Rethink".
Also what is the min DC voltage for NACS?
Mind blown! Yes, go to CAT!
Great job K, when you said CAT is leading the way in electric equipment. I wondered about your due diligence on that comment or did you shoot from the hip like "brandon" did. This guy is the best darn speaker ive ever heard.
I can see this being good for mining, this can also eliminate the fumes that those workers are breathing in those mines from the diesel engines! Very cool indeed!
Exciting technology from Caterpillar!
Wonderful review, electric heavy equipment is well on its way. :)
That’s how we roll!
More!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not running ice under ground seems like a good thing.
11:50: There is a standard covering 50 to 1000V, it's called CHAdeMO. The plug also supports up to 400A.
CCS lowest voltage is 150V.
CAT is exactly who we would expect to do Electrification for Miners.
The mini excavator looks like it has an old arcade coin acceptor on the side. Pay as you go.
Funny thing - I was just looking at what it would take to migrate a CAT299D3 track-skidsteer with a blown engine to electric (umbilical). Replacing the 110HP diesel with a 100HP 3-phase 600VAC inverter duty motor, inverter, and step down transformer, cable reel, and step-up transformer (23kV - to 600V)... would cost about as much as a new machine. but would also work for other machines in the same basic power range (like a Cat317 excavator, etc...)
Why 23kV? Transmission (umbilical) cable weight versus length - figuring a 100kW end of wire load, 600VAC would need 166A of transmission, 23kV only needs 4.5A of transmission (much smaller gauge cable like 14AWG, about 3/4" diameter, so more length on a reel).
One complication is that with an umbilical is you either need to follow it back through a work site, or be able to rewind it and manully move it around obstacles (which if one used an intermediate cable closer to the work area, could mean 1-mile of working range). The former is easy with GPS navigation on-board, the latter easy with a 12-48V spool motor running from an on-board battery.
LOVE this. The average power consumption of some machines isn't that high. However....some construction machines have an average output of >500kW.
Interesting , Thank You . A fine example of developing the Equipment that Owners and Operators want and need. PLEASE Remember that EVEY thing MUST be Repairable in the FIELD , ALL PARTS MUST be avalble.
Fantastic video. Forwarding to my brother in law who sells Volvo equipment.
The last time I heard this amount of hormonal enthusiasm, I was at a girl's grade-school volley ball game.
Have at it teeners, just keep the CAT V-16 diesel genset handy to produce all of those electron gulping EVs
John needs a raise ASAP!!!!!!
Thanks. Deere, Volvo & Case have EV heavy equipment also. And others that I’m not thinking of. It’s a really interesting business segment.
Case CE has some really interesting products here for sure. Don’t know if that extends to IH or New Holland
Great video, thank you. Wonder how they deal with shock and vibration for the electronic assemblies, heard mining equipment has vibration that exceeds MIL STD 810H.
Keep it up CAT. I think Battery Swapping would overcome the production time hurdles.
Never seen you before but I love the dirt world
