Jelena dresses funny and she makes funny faces but she is very serious once the ball is served. I'm very impressed on how accurate her shots are from awkward places.
I agree. But even if she leads and everything goes right for her she still sees balls from opponent close the line as out and hers in. This is the thing I really don’t appreciate from her. She doesn’t want to accept the reality she wants her reality to exist.

Ostapenko has the ability to upset any player including the top 10. Her ability to make weird shots work and very good defense gives her an upper hand; also when she gets her emotions in check and focus, she is dangerous!
She always beat Iga. A killer of #1 seed.
I feel like Penko's best defense is her ability to be aggressive; she's always looking to land that big shot and play first strike tennis.

She's a very streaky player. She can turn on God mode anytime she wants.

It might not be visible from the scoreline, but dang this Kasatkina is a much-improved version compared to the slicer-crafty version because not only she's still crafty, but she added that extra power to both wings. The serve is a work in progress (it's very rare to see Dasha hit 175+ tho but she did it several time in this match) but it's improving too
And of course, Jelena proving to everyone that she is a fixture in the Top 30s, not just 1-year-wonder
She's always been a good player and power hitter but needs to work on the mental aspect to pull thru these clutch matches.
She’s improved. Actually i think Dasha did not fight yesterday and make an effort. She just gave up easily. She will show her best games in 2024, i know🎉
Never seen so many drop shots and touch shots from Ostapenko, she's put in the work to improve her game.
She's getting to the ball a little quicker it seems, giving herself more options.
I loved how Ostapenko hugged Kasatkina at the net. Ostapenko during the trophy presentation even admitted that she's good friends with Kasatkina.
Nice to see. Everyone likes Kasatkina. She always plays in good spirit.
Yeah if you watch Kastkina UA-cam vlogs which is also translated in English you will see the behind the scenes and I've seen her and Ostapenko just hanging out and chilling
These scene can be seen only when she wins the match... But not the other way... That makes the difference between oth of them

Jelena is the most naturally gifted player on tour. Can she go deep in Aus Op.? Swiatek will be very concerned 4-0. I pray for this match to happen. Ostepenko is great for tennis love her or hate.❤❤❤
Penko is now 7-1 in 2024. Great start to the season, and a nice way to carry momentum into the AO. She looks like she's worked on her fitness, and seems to be moving better than last year.
I'm DYING for Penko to go deep into the Aus Open. This could be a good year for her. And French next!

Kasatkina has improved her backhand so much and finally learned to flatten out the forehand. If only she could work on that serve...

@@vbw4501 isolated case im tallking about the 100s of different ones whether she is right or wrong you can not change whats happened and it just seems to distract her I just think if she concentrated more on the match rather than the dramas she through racquet that almost hit ball boy ---- I like her just think without dramas would be a better player

In this tournament she proved how great tennis player she really is. She was consistent when it mattered the most and didn't give to her opponents hopes on winning. She played great, smart and powerfully. Congratulations to Ostapenko on winning this tournament. 7th tittle and first tittle in Australia. With this form Ostapenko can go far in this tournament.

What I admire about Osta is that she's always played her own high risk game and never allowed anybody to talk her out of it. I wish Raducanu had done the same.
Her strokes are hard and not a lot of top spin... I love it. I wish more players would do the same, both men and women.
Dasha imroved so much in the off season, wow. I don't know why just now and not in the last couple years, especially that serve. Who knows. Congrats to Jelena though, cool to see her string those performances together for a 500 title.

kmon , we all loved her from the begining, it was her antiks that annoyed a lot of ppl. The respect has to be earned no? Remember the HUGE RESPECT Kirgios had? what got ppl to have less of that? his antiks AND his LACK OF RESPECT for players , public and officials...
we all know her potential but what impresses me most about this tournament win is the run of players she's had to play. Now if she were more consistent, she'd make the top 5 very interesting

Ostapenko has really developed as a player.
she has always had a palette of big shots and takes the very early, often /ridiculously early/ - taking a lot of time away from her opponent.
yet she has surprisingly soft hands and play dinks, dropshots, heavy slice, change the pace /trajectory, improvise …. that is a sign of very talented player. i hope that she can keep everything together and challenge for more slams.

I wish Ostapenko acted like this all the time. I mean even when she thought the ball was way out she didn’t really get upset. Just put her arms up for a second and moved on. She NEVER let stuff like that go. I don’t think she’ll ever be pleasant but I hope she’s becoming more bearable lol
Maybe if you watched more than once in the last year. She's been very mature and composed on the court for a good while now. It's reflected in her improved results, with two titles since last summer and good results in much of the fall schedule.

Penko can taken the game out of anyone's hands
People often forget that Ostapenko is a grand slam champion. She can win any tournament at any time. Her only weakness is her second serve. If her serve was more formidable she'd be winning slams all the time.
and I think her attitude at times doesn’t help her…she uses a lot of energy & positive mind set ‘moaning’ if she just got on with her game, I think she’d be more focused

Jelena is my Fav to watch simply because of her shotmaking.
If Ostapenko performs to her highest level at the AO 24 she's a serious threat to win it all. None of the Big 3 in the WTA like playing her when she's on her game. The top half of the draw on the women's side at the AO is stacked with talent and that half of the draw is very difficult to predict. Going to be a fun year for the WTA! I'm hoping to see the Fruhvirtova sisters going deeper but due to their youth and inexperience going past the first 2 rounds will be a tough challenge as their service games are still developing. If Brenda can get to the second round she will make the top 100 and at least won't have to keep playing qualification rounds for the GS's. The AO 24 starts in 11 hours can't wait for the Fun Slam to get going!!
I feel that Ostapenko almost has the game to win slams..perhaps a better service game needed as her 2nd is weak but I honestly believe her overall biggest improvement required is her attitude throughout her game when things aren’t going her way. She uses so much energy on negativity..arguing, moaning etc..when she behaves in this way, it often lasts for a large portion of the match where she loses focus.
She won a slam. But she needs to win slamS like you said.

Kasatkina is a really fine player; currently top 15. But aside from a couple of nice holds, she was really only in this match as much as Ostapenko's 1st service % and unforced errors allowed her to be. Ostapenko got the expected breaks of serve she usually forces, and when hitting her 1st serve well, was in control.
She had the form to win this tourney, but the difference is whether or not you have the mentality to execute in the defining moments to win the title. Great job from Jelena and her team to come away with the victory here, and good showing from Daria. I had no idea they became good friends over the years XD

Ostapenko's very aggressive first strike tennis is more impressive then most of the men's game. She doesnt just keep the ball in play and wait for the Unforced errors like Djokovic and others.
I agree with most of what you said, but Djokovic and some others do not wait for an unforced error. They are setting up the play and sometimes it takes a few shots to do that.

If Ostapenko were to harness her serve -- make it flatter and more powerful -- and weaponized it against her opponents, she'd be #1. Remember Bartoli a decade ago? She had a weak serve until she developed it. Then she became the tour's best server.

well it's nice to see jelena ostapenko on the winning side again.but i hope she did not overworked her self playing all of these tournaments,being that the austrailian open is this week,but you know alot of these players are happy she played all these tournaments especially iga which she had not beat,and they are in the same draw.
It seemed like a game between professional and amateur... such was the difference in strength between the two. Jelena, along with Sabalenka, Iga and Rybakina are the most powerful players on the circuit. Jelena has the strength, makes the ball run absurdly, proposes the game, reduces the response time and pushes the opponent from one side to the other. On a good day, Jelena can beat any player.
Iga isn't powerful IMO.

Omg she needs a better serve so bad. But, she is so much like Monica Seles and she doesn't need footwork when you can hit a winner from anywhere on the court.
