Headstock, tailstock, carriage apron are manufactured from aluminum now not cast iron. The spindle diameter for the bearings is too small allowing for a few play in the spindle so I am using some blue Loctite to take out the play.

I've had a HF 34706 for a little over nine years. On average I'll turn 10-12 candle lights and vases, 8-10 bowls, and 5-6 desk/table lamps (minimum) every month with it. I've found it to be reliable, easy to use, and mechanically sound IF you take care of it. At 3/4 HP it is somewhat underpowered for a lathe its size so don't try and overload it. I've turned 10"(D) x 18"(L) pieces of wood on it but I've made sure they were balanced enough to take strain off the motor. When advancing the speed-control handle do it gradually so as allow the belt-drive system to ease up to speed. And make sure you do so likewise every time you want to shut off the lathe; ease the control handle back to its lowest setting. I use a large Wood River chuck and the 34706 handles it without problem. My 4"-6"-8" faceplates are no problem either. I've added other 1"x 8TPI and MT#2 accessories and they've made the 34706 even more versatile in what I can do. I took advantage of the stand's ability to install a shelf below the lathe bed; on the shelf I have 300-lbs. of sandbags that anchor the lathe solidly in place and prevent a lot a of vibration and wandering. For the money there is not a better lathe on the market, in my opinion. I started on a 34706 and have stayed with it despite advanced woodturning abilities and the ability to buy a more expensive one. It works for me but I take care of it. It will work for you if you take care of it. Regular cleaning, lubrication, an overall "easy' approach to using it will go a long way. It's gone nine years for me.
I've had my HF lathe three years now. I've turned over 300 bowls not counting the vases, wine glasses, mushrooms. I found a way to save a lot of money, and that is using carbide tools. I sharpen my own carbide tips. I've been using the same ones for 6 months now. They are now becoming pretty worn. All I have to do is loosen a screw and replace them with a new one and I'm ready for another 6 months.

Jake, as you know, I turn with the same lathe. I have not had any problems. For what it is, it is a horse. My lathe is anchored to the floor. That takes care of the lathe walking. Gr8 review!!

I actually took mine off the base and when I need to use it, I just put it up on my workbench. I never had any issues with it on the stand, but I like it better on the bench. The bench does NOT move no matter what I am doing and I can even clamp the lathe down to the edge of the bench.
Now the next thing is the DC motor modification.Then you get the slower and faster speed thing taken care of as well.
I solved the weight "issue" by building a shelf along the lower brace with some 1/2 plywood I had lying around and just put a bag of concrete or two when I need the extra stability. Great review, I got mine used too and you provided excellent information for anyone who has inherited one of these machines.

I ‘discovered’ this back in the early 90s when my Delta ‘34-series’ (smallest cast iron top tablesaw they offered) got modified for a router table and 60” custom fence that I built. The sheet steel stand and base got ditched for a spruce 2x4 base with plywood panels, and the unintended storage area absorbed a few hundred pounds of tools.
That completely changed the saw! I wasn’t unhappy with it before but it instantly became butter smooth and stable with a braced base and weight.
3/4” MDF glued and screwed inside 12- and 14” bandsaw cabinets transforms them as well.

I have one of these. I love it. Its a work horse. I started with the HF 5 speed table top lathe, used it for 5 years before getting the big one. Been using this one almost 3 years. I use it more than my jet lathe. I definitely recommend it. As for the stand, i found it a little low for my comfort, so i added 4x4 blocks under it. Since then, I mounted it on my work bench. I love it

A little over seven months ago I posted on this channel about my nine-plus years of experience with the 34706, and gave my opinion that it was the best lathe, for the money, on the market. That's still my opinion. However, I must have jinxed myself with that post because just a month later the motor on my 34706 stopped working. Toasted. Fried. Not-gonna-run-again. Windings were shot, capacitor conked out. I figured, conservatively, that I'd gotten around 5,000-hours out of that motor so I definitely got my money's worth. BUT, all was not lost. A few phone calls and emails to Harbor Freight and for a little over $150 I received a new motor and some associated installation parts like springs and c-rings. In less than an hour I had the pulleys re-installed on the shaft, motor mounted, and electrical connections done and I was back in business. Harbor Freight Parts Dept. was great! Just wanted everyone to know that the 34706 is a tough unit, 9-years and 5,000-hours (if you take care of it), and Harbor Freight's parts folks are there when you need them. If you're looking for a lathe and the 34706 is a consideration, go for it. You wont be sorry.

I've owned the same lathe since 2001. I agree with virtually everything that was said in this review. I bought a larger, better, lathe a couple of years after getting this one. I still use my HF lathe frequently. Mostly as a buffing station, but I like it for longer spindles. The HF is an excellent spindle lathe. For pens, pepper mills, lamp bases, etc., it's really all you need. As was noted in the review, the HF lathe struggles with bowls or anything that's out of balance. The legs are made from fairly thin sheet steel. There's too much flex for a turning something out of balance. (You can address this by mounting the lathe to a bench.)
For the same reason, you really don't want to turn the lathe's headstock to allow for off-board turning. The lathe really isn't stable enough to turn anything larger than its 12" swing. Even if you the blank was superbly balanced, you want to turn larger blanks at less than the lathe's minimum speed. Keep it centered between the ways and you'll do fine. If you do turn the lathe's headstock, get a double-ended morse taper to align the headstock with the tailstock. You stick one end in the tailstock, then swing the headstock back into position until the other end of the double-ended morse taper can be slid into the headstock's spindle. Then, lock down the headstock. It's easy and is super accurate.

bought that model lathe last summer. i went online and searched "harbor freight lathe coupon". its true that the regular coupons exclude central machinery. but you can find coupons just for this lathe. im happy with mine so far. i do wish the motor had a slower speed, but maybe i can rig something for that. it is pretty lightweight. im in the process of building a stand for mine that will raise it up 4 or 5 inches, and have retractable casters. ( i work in a garage, so the lathe has to be moveable) im building the bench/stand very heavy and solid. if i someday get a bigger, better lathe, ill still have a heavy workbench! good review jake (as always!). from watching your stuff, and seeing the other responses here, i can see that you really dont have to spend thousands for a lathe to turn! good job!

Thanks for doing a proper video on this lathe. This was the first lathe I owned, actually a gift from my sons. I turned a lot and learned a lot on it. It was a great way to get into turning. It doesn't take long to pick up tricks to improve the balance of blanks. Besides, chasing the lathe around the shop is great exercise.

I have added steel to various things to add weight. Not just the steel, but I’ve made boxed trays across the legs, for example, which stiffens it up but more importantly they hold sand. A fairly small and inexpensive boxed steel ‘shelf’ will hold 3-4 bags of sand adding 300lbs to a tool base. A couple diagonals and the tool has a lot of strength and weight. With a lathe, the oscillating shake stops making smoother cuts as well as it no longer walking around the shop (because it has better floor contact if it isn’t vibrating). I even have a small woodworking bench I made that is under 100# to transport, but is over 300# in use.
Just some thoughts. And by the way- unbalanced or otherwise vibrating tools are not cured by merely bolting them to the floor. Mass and diagonal dampening is the only fix with ‘cheap’ tools.

I have also purchased both the small lathe, just see if I could do it and like doing it. Cause, if I had not I wouldn't have a three hundred dollars tied up in something I didn't want. The big one I bought, with help from my sister, I use all the time. Now I need more time!

I bought mine for $279.00 about 2 years ago and have used the hell out of mine. I have turned bowls, pens and even table legs. I use Nova Chucks and really like them. And I really like the fact that the head stock rotates. Really the only thing I wish it had is a turning wheel where you insert the knockout bar. Thank you for doing the review. Turning is very relaxing to me.

I enjoyed my HFT 34706 for about three years then gave it to a deserving student. It was trouble free and did a lot of work for me. I recommend newbies read the owners manual at least five times to be very familiar with the machine and how engineers designed it.

I bought my 10x18 HF wood lathe years ago using a 25% coupon, and it still works fine. That little thing is all cast iron, and it doesn't jump around. It's all I need for pen turning.

Hi Jake! I also have this same Harbor Freight lathe and I have, and still am, enjoying it. It does everything I want it to do. I like how the headstock rotates 180 degrees, but I haven't turned anything that way as of yet. I just saw a beautiful old lathe on craigslist, just needs a motor, it has a 4 step cone pulley wheel in the headstock. They were asking $50 . You could buy a variable speed treadmill motor connect a belt to any 1 of the 4 pulley steps, and use the motor's speed control, and you would be on your way for very little money. I agree, hand turning can be explored for very little $.

I bought one a couple years ago, and while it has done a good job, for the most part, I’ve had a repeating problem with the speed not advancing, and the variable pulley not engaging the belt. At first, I just lubed the shaft of the variable pulley, but after a while, the gear connected to the speed control handle became fouled with dust and chips even though it’s contained within a cast housing. If Harbor Freight parts department is out of a part, they wait till they receive it from China, which could take months. I have set this lathe aside and purchase a Grizzly 14x20 variable speed reversing lathe. Speed is adjusted by a potentiometer, and an RPM display sits above the pot. I am exceptionally pleased with the Grizzly lathe.

I have a delta 14-40 iron bed. It wasn't $300. It has a slow speed of 500. It walks all over the shop, the speed control is much harder to adjust than the one you demonstrate. I snapped my tool rest extension with a catch so I decided to not do any extended turning. Great review shows that you can turn wood on a budget. Don't have to but you can.

I've had mine about 6+ years now. i have no complaints. I've broke a few parts on it. repaired it and still use it. I added a piece of wood in the center and put 4 50lb bags of play sand which made it stop walking around the garage. Only thing I wish i could do would be a stronger motor. I don't know how to do that or it would of been done already
I did the say except put a 5 drawer toolbox on "shelf" of sorts. Great for storing face plates, drive centers, all kinds of stuff. Probably weighs around 100 lbs or so

I have the same lathe. I've had probably about 2 years. Those handles can strip out but that's no big deal. I've made some modifications to mine. I didn't use the legs. I made my own stand with casters. I modified a spindle lock. That comes in handy. I made it reverse but quit using it. You can get the speed control at harbor freight. That will actually slow it down to almost stopping, but it has no torque. It works for putting on the finish so it doesn't splatter everywhere. One problem I've had with mine is when you work between centers if you apply to much pressure with the tailstock it will tilt the headstock back. I put a spacer on the back side where the lock pin is. That seemed to help. I love it and plan to keep using it til it dies. TTFN Sid.

I have the same lathe. Got it July 2019. I', happy with it. Have the same cons you have, namely speed range. Also wish the motor could be run in reverse. Yep, had the 25% Coupon, which was great being on a fixed income. So far has done everything I've asked of it.

I wondered about that lathe. I buy things from Harbor Freight, but generally avoid things with moving parts. I have been tempted by the lathe for the reasons that you mentioned. I might just buy it wit a coupon.

I as told the tool rest should be elbow height for control and comfort while turning. The HR lathe tool rest sits at about 41 inch's off the floor, but because I'm 6'5" tall, I needed it to be about 47 inches. I picked up a 4X6x8 at HD for 10 bucks and built an "I" shaped riser bringing the tool rest, at center, to just under 47 inches. the weight of the 4X6 also helps keep the lathe in place when the material is out of balance. It also gave me a place to mount some retractable wheels as there is no perminent place for anything in my small workshop. Be well.

I appreciate your review on this particular lathe. I just started turning not long ago and I didn’t have much money to begin with for a lathe. I ended up buying a cheap foreign made model for I think around $89.00 at the time. It has served its purpose getting me started but when I bought it I really didn’t realize that I would end up needing so much more to go with it and the one I bought only has a 3/4”x8tpi center stock making it harder to get parts. Plus they don’t even make a tailstock with a exchangeable mandrel. You are stuck with a center point only. These things really limits the work that can be done. I had been wondering about this lathe. I still don’t have a lot of money, LOL. BUt I think it’s time to invest into something I can get serious with. Have a great day. Thanks again. God Bless.

Thank you, I have that exact model and have been considering purchasing different accessories for it. I wasn't sure of the sizes necessary for it. I also found mine to be too light, however I wanted it mobile. I mounted mine to a set of cabinets with locking casters. It has worked well for me.

Hey Jake......It's been a while since ive been on YT, so it's refreshing watching one of your videos 1st.......Harbor Freight DOES have alot of shit tools, but some of their stuff is actually made well, and is worth every penny you spend on them, including that lathe, and their smaller lathe........One thing i would do right off the bat with your lathe is, attach a pc of plywoos to the bottom of the base and either load it up with sand bags, or build a box and just fill it with sand.......That will stop the "walking around", alot of the flexing, and most importantly, make it turn A LOT smoother and acurate........that will make a HUGE difference for sure.....And welcome to the exciting world of turning!!

Hey Jake thanks for the review on H.F woodlathe its been a while now since i done some turning and after the completion of my new workshop the only thing missing is a new lathe,I found your review very interesting as i buy a lot of equipment from H.F. as for your lathe dancing around the shop floor with my old lathe i placed some rubber pads under each foot then bolted the lathe too the floor both movement at high speeds and vibration when turning was solved,once again thanks for the tips.

I've finally found "my" lathe. And by that I mean, this is a lathe that I already own, that I bought maybe 15 years ago? And now I "get it". It's the identical lathe, only blue in colour, and was sold under the "Mastercraft" brand from a company here in Canada called "Canadian Tire". You might have heard of them. Came with all the stuff you showed. And yes, it could go a bit slower for say, finishing. I did see a video where a fellow hooked up a rotisserie to his lathe for just that reason.
So apparently, there is one Chinese manufacturer that makes these and sticks various labels on them. All of the "Mastercraft" tools (and I use the term "tools" lightly) have that definite "made in China" feel to them.
It's a good enough lathe, and the bit about lining up the head and tailstock is something I hadn't thought of. So thanks for that, and the review in general. Put a plywood shelf on the brackets down below and throw a few bags of sand on, and it might not "walk" near as much. Carry on!

So how do you spend more on resin than your lathe 🤷🏻♂️😂🤜🏻 I started with an older version of that lathe but broke the banjo trying to turn rough stock. I switched to an old craftsman tube style and man i tell ya getting a chuck made a WORLD of difference! Awesome as always and folks need to know how us common folk get stuff done without spending 100k to setup a shop 😆

I bought the HF 10" x 18" maybe 6 months ago just to try this whole wood turning thing out. Immediately wished I could turn larger pieces. I'm thinking about buying this one, but maybe I should be patient and try to find an estate sale or auction. I'm pretty sure HF is selling these larger ones for like twice as much now.
I agree with you.. I’m just now upgrading. If you know you like woodturning get the best one you can afford. 👍👍

Hi Jake, just found your channel and this is an awesome video! You answered A LOT of questions about wood lathes as I've been noodling over what lathe to buy. A friend has a "free" lathe in his shop and I've been "practicing" on his for a while. You convinced me that one of my options for a wood lathe is the Harbor Freight model. I'll admit I was a lil skeptical of a "cheap" lather, but from watching your video, I'll be putting one in my shop pretty soon......now where did I put that dang coupon.........

I can't wait! She is ready to rock now. What did you use to keep your lathe from running off? I've thought of drilling peg holes into my concrete floor. Also the jack with the foot lift brake.
You can anchor it to the floor or put weights on the legs.. lol I haven’t done anything yet. Just keep the speed down until it’s round.

Matt Berg it will chatter quite a bit if you are cutting agressively for sure. I don’t tend to use it like that much at all.

I would mount the whole thing to a 4x8 sheet of plywood. Me standing on that sheet while working would keep it from going anywhere. Cut an angle on the edges to keep me from stubbing my toe waling up on it.

_Thanks, this video help me to go and get this one. How about throwing some small rubber pieces under the feet, then throw a sandbag or two on the crossbars? I have done this with my drill presses and grinders on the metal stands. I need the mobility of these machines._

I took machine shop in high school. We used a metal lathe that had controls so precise that they would pretty much do the lathing for you.
My question is, how do you control a handheld chisel across a large item? Is it a feel thing? Or is there some sort of a stop attachment you can clamp on your chisels? Ive never used this style, so Im green.
Also, the swivel feature is an amazing idea. How large of a bowl (width and height) can you turn with it swiveled out?
Thank you Jason.. the tools are held against the tool rest because the workpiece is Turing towards you… I don’t use the swivel option because the lathe is so light it will not be stable.. other people weigh their lathes down or bolt them down.. here is a video to the tools I use ua-cam.com/video/UVWwigk1jBI/v-deo.html

@Jake Thompson or anyone who casts with resin, when is it more desirable to cast your molds under pressure versus in a vacuum? Are there any differences in the outcome of the product? Casting in a vacuum seems like it has the potential to get messy as the air escapes, and I'm not sure if, when doing something like stabilizing wood, i like the idea of the stabilizer or resin simply being allowed to flow into tight spaces, versus being forced into them by pressure.
Z B some prefer to use vacuum to release bubbles from the resin.. I use fast setting resin which doesn’t allow time to use the vacuum chamber... and I have a pressure pot.. so I have no mess like you mentioned.

hey boss, i just got this lathe. im having a problem locking the motor to the base. ive already stripped the lock down handle. i cant do anything until i can lock it down. its like i cant even turn the rod to tighten it down. something isnt right. i rigged the stripped handle enough to make it crank btw.
Did you buy it new or used.. I would take it apart and inspect if there’s something wrong.
Great overview. Someone, someday, is going to invent an adapter to mount a cordless drill to the end of headstock so you can run slow rpm’s for applying CA etc. and it will maybe get a lot of UA-cam hits. Hint hint. 😁

Goood wrench The face plate comes with it and the live and spurr centers.. there are plenty of cheaper chucks out there.. but you can cut wood as soon as you get it home.

I like the fact that the headstock swings outboard to turn larger items, but for something big you need the speed to be less than 100 rpms, not 600. Is there a speed reducer available?
I haven’t found one. The other thing is.. you need to have it bolted to the floor or weighted down.. the lathe is very light

Jake, I've got a lathe like yours and starting yesterday the fan inside the motor started hitting the sheet metal cover. Can't figure out what has happened to cause this. Any suggestions?
