By 1980, the band needed a rest. So many passed away that year: John Bonham, Keith Moon...Bon Scott. The touring had taken a hard toll on the majority of 70's touring acts, the decade even killed Elvis. The drugs within the music industry were ridiculous. Peter was lucky, he went to rehab and got himself together, eventually rejoining Kiss in 1996 for their Reunion tour.

Spot On. It was a time of excess. Studio 54. Cocaine was cool. Lynyrd Skynyrd was out of control before their crash. Peter Frampton couldn’t continue on. Disco was pure excess. The Bee Gees, Andy Gibb, Donna Summer, KC and the Sunshine Band, The Village People: just a whole lot of excess. Much nose candy. That Smell as Ronnie Van Zant sang. Blondie was another group that suffered from excess. And on and on. Groups would tour relentlessly. Excessively. Too much touring. Too much of the road. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. It was the late 70’s rolling into the early 80’s. Often romanticized, yet, the reality of it all was something much different. It’s a wonder more musicians didn’t suffer a similar fate.

Seriously. I spent the first three minutes of this story trying to figure out but this was actually Paul.. (forgot his last name), cause I don't know very much about KISS.
But from three other comments I've accepted it is him. Not what I expected at all, though I'm not sure exactly what I did expect. Only other time I saw any of these guys talk was an interview with Simmons and .. Paul where Gene was telling him to stop contradicting everything he said. It was funny cause you could tell Paul didn't give af.

I was friends with someone who worked for Kiss for decades so I have met them and heard stories and met both Peter and Ace on solo tours. They were both still wasted when I met them.
I know there are people who think..rock band..they all had to have drunk or did drugs. I'm in my 50s now..rock fan..and nope..never drank or did drugs. And Gene never has and Paul occasionally drinks. So when you don't and your are constantly around someone who is, it gets hard to be around them. And Paul and Gene were and still are businessmen. They were running a business and having musicians who are always drunk or high wasn't working. They didn't want help at the time. And you can't make people get help if they don't want it.

Peter had also regularly on the Dynasty Tour been pretending to forget the words to Beth. And if you read his book, in his own words he said he put his hands on Gene and knew the second he did it that he was out. Ace told him, “I’m sorry Catman but you were out of control.” Then the other 3 felt guilty and gave him an audition to see if they could work it out. Again in the book by Peter’s own admission he sabotaged it, being sarcastic and trying to make a point. He was playing too slow and saying, Is this good enough?! Am I doing it right?! They said, OK we tried but we can’t do this anymore.

I vividly remember when Peter left KISS. I was 5 and all I knew was that the Catman from my favourite band had gone. I was finishing some leftover cookies from my school lunch, crying, then choking on cookie crumbs, then having more cookies, more crying, more choking. I finished my cookie though.

Peter (and Ace) thought that KISS was supposed to be a heavy metal band. It was Paul and Gene's decision to put out Dynasty, Unmasked and Music from the Elder. Instead of owning up to his bad decisions, Paul would rather blame Peter and Ace for the fact that nobody listened to KISS in the 1980s.

"it was the end of something... but WAT?" well it was the end of the band really. i loved them as a little kid, but after they lost one i never listened again. it was a 'thing' for me. they were the four of them, when they weren't it was changing something immutable for me. the same since i was little, things like that - just seemed like they were forever. when they weren't.... well you know kids don't know how to take that stuff, because they've usually not seen it yet. i get being a grown up and having to make that call on a band-mate, but don't expect a kid fan to ever be able to conceptualize it. it was never the same for me after that.

Paul also mentions in his book that Peter already threatened the band in the early years. For example, "Hooligan" was originally planned with Gene on vocals. Peter said: "I'll sing "Hooligan", or I'm out!". I never respected him as a musician. I mean, listen to his boring drum solos. He needed dozens of takes to play the more complicated tunes. Ace is great, but the guitar players that also were on the albums (Bob Kulick, Bruce Kulick, Vinnie Vincent, Steve Farris, Mark St. John, Dick Wagner and so on) are way better.

well, i can hear in his voice, Paul's, that he is bitter, and i am trying to look at this from all sides instead of just listening to bits and clips on here, but Paul has some hang ups from his childhood as well as from his deformity that has left him with bitterness? or bitterness that can come out, intentional or unintentional, towards situations that he is uncomfortable with, i can not say for him on what to do, but i myself found that if you just let it go, you are better off for it, i understand that he had made it, rock star, lots of cash, but if you listen or read book, you can see what i am saying here and why he is why he is, yes he does sound like a whinny bitch, but looking at it form his point of view this was something, the band that he worked hard for and got it! but once more, it is better to let things go and not let it embitter you more so than what you already are, perhaps he can nto see that due to his bitterness that he harbors from his deformity, nothing to be ashamed of mind you,and his childhood which does not sound all that great. in closing, none of us are perfect, if we was , it sure as hell would be boring but perhaps Paul as well as the rest of us could try and rise above such things and maybe be a better person for it in the end. just a thought here that i wanted to share

Drug and or alcohol addictions have ruined so many careers, spousal and family relationships, and lives. Some below here say, you have to give them a chance. Truth is, numerous chances are given, until those around the addict realize he/she isn't trying to solve their problem, so the spouse, family member, friends, co-workers finally give up and cut the masochistic person loose. I know about this because a close family member has run out of chances with us. It's sad, it hurts, it's not our fault, he lies to himself, and won't change.

When I saw KISS in 2000 in their first farewell tour Peter was there. I'm a musician and I prayed everyone was in top form. Thankfully everyone was. It was an amazing show and I'm extremely thankful that it was.
