Thank you Gary, love your shortcut tips videos. I’d add a file rename step like Hazel. Much appreciated.
I've used Hazel for years to automate file management. It's just a front end to Folder Actions but is a nice utility. I love the way you focus on features that come with the OS and not dozens of commercial utilities.
Hazel actions do a really nice job of keeping my files organized but it is nice to know there is this option also.
Quick question. May I know what Hazel is? Is it better than the above shortcut?

Shortcuts is foundational Apple tech, so becoming more comfortable with it will help with automation skills across all your Apple devices. Think of Shortcuts as being way more flexible and powerful overall than Hazel. Shortcuts is free with your Apple devices.
Hazel is a tool that does a few things very well. It can assist with application uninstallation, Trash management, and file organization/processing. It is a commercial product, currently $42 US for a license. The developer is first rate and responsive. With Hazel, one creates a rule set for a folder. You then create conditions for actions based on extensions, file types, name, date, color label, comment, size, etc to trigger various direct actions on the files, up to more advanced options like running AppleScripts, Javascript, etc. Hazel can also sync rule sets across multiple Macs if you need.

Pretty fun. I was hoping to see shortcuts used with Folder Actions. I'm currently doing this with Automator, but would like to see it in Shortcuts.
Folder Actions are only in Automator. There's nothing like that in Shortcuts.
I wish you would have demonstrated what the shortcut does so that when you showed how to build the SC, I could see what the finished product would do. Maybe I need to go back to Basic Shortcuts. Thanks for the videos.

Very interesting and useful. I'm guessing that Shortcuts has its basis in AppleScript or Automator. Some of these things seem familiar to me. I will be building that latest item in Downloads. That one is an outstanding item. Doubt I would have figured that one on my own. Cool.
It actually came from a separate company who built it for the iPhone, then Apple bought them, then expanded it to the Mac too.
Great video learnt a lot. I’ve been trying to build a similar workflow with Automator and apple scripts.
Is there a way to pre fill a list of client folders in Google drive and then move the files there automatically in finder?
Would be annoying to update the shortcut each time you get a new client folder as a new destination.
Can’t wait until MacOS can automatically suggest where to move files.
I suppose you can built a prompt into the Shortcut to ask for a folder, yes.
@@macmost I used an "other" option in the "Choose from menu" to use File with "ask each time enabled" kinda works.
If anyone knows how to make this with less clicks I'd appreciate the knowledge.

I am, however, unable to figure out the following:
I have a folder with files of type images downloaded from a camera into a folder on the desktop.
Each file imported into the folder on the desktop is in two formats, ARW and JPEG.
I would like my Shortcut to process all the selected files by first, inside the folder where all imported files are, create one folder called "arw", and one folder called "jpeg", and then move all files ending with .arw to the arw folder and .jpeg to the jpeg folder.
How would I accomplish this?
It will take lots of steps. Break it down and work to build the actions needed for each step. First make sure you get a list of the selected files as input. Then, work to have it create the two new folders. Then have it loop through the list of files and move them using an IF action to divide the actions according to the file extension. It will take a lot of work, and how hard it is depends on whether you have previous programming experience and previous Shortcuts experience.
Hey Gary, I've recently used Automator to simplify copying files which I do regularly from and to the same locations. Pros & cons of Shortcuts v Automator?
Automator is much older and is Mac-only. Shortcuts is newer and is Mac, iPhone, iPad, even Vision Pro. You can access Shortcuts on the Apple Watch as well. There are a few things Automator does that Shortcuts does not (Folder Actions, for instance). But Shortcuts is likely the future and Automator may or may not continue to be supported in years to come. Shortcuts is also probably easier to use for most people.
Sometimes I click on a link on a website an it automatically downloads a PDF file rather than just letting me view it in the browser. That's super annoying. Thinking maybe I can do a shortcut to send those right to the trash except sometimes I actually want to download the file. As always, I learned new things on your videos so thanks.
It’s so complicated for a no-code system. Great video, but it’s easier for me to move files manually as I don’t need too much automation
Best presentation of Quick Commands I have seen. I will wrestle with the problem of taking copies of my Filemaker FM12 files to iPhone and iPad. Generally I use AirDrop, but AirDrop in my MAC OS machine will send them to "Files" and from "Files" I use the Share arrow to send each file to its respective device (eg Contacts.fm12 to Contacts.FM12 to Files in iPhone then Contacts to Contacts in iPad). Presumably OS share ^Files^ with the devices, and I could send the files to that Folder but I'm not sure where to find the Files App on the OS machine. Am I being terribly thick-headed? In earlier versions of Filemaker an FM file flew directly to the iPhone, etc., but after some update or other, the copy had to go through Files then be sent on to each device.
The Files app on an iPhone is how you access your files. On a Mac you use the Finder to access your files. Anything you put on iCloud Drive would appear in both Files and the Finder across your own devices without needing AirDrop.
Thank you for your suggestions about getting Filemaker files to iCloud drive without using Air Drop, hence to the "Files" Ap from computer to iPhone. Filemaker wants me to make a copy and send it. I do so, but it doesn't seem to appear in Files. What am I doing wrong?
@@philiprand3720 Sorry, I can't really help more because I just don't use that app. I don't know what you are seeing and what it may be doing. I'd contact the app developer for support with this.
Infinite thanks. Claris Filemaker - they suggest Air Drop, and that does work. I think I am being thick headed about getting files of whatever type into Files (here in Italy it is called "File"). (For their reasons, they want you to make a copy, and that's not my problem). Until I get more experienced (at age 84 that's a bit difficult) I'll just use Air Drop.
I couldn't get Move Files based on menu choice working on my iPhone, sadly, and have to stick with Ask Each Time.
On the iPhone you don't have the Finder. You have the Files app. So may be a difference because of that.
Is “The Last Modified” date always the same as the Date and Time it was downloaded, or is it the Date and Time it was last modified by the person who uploaded it to the server where you downloaded it from?
I think it depends on the "server" and other factors. It can also be tricky to know if the file was actually created by someone or if it is being generated at the time of download.

What if I just need to move selected files but Move action does not have "Ask where to" option?

I think it will work there. You have the basic Move Files action there too.
Whatever I'm doing wrong, I can't get the destination file to work. I don't get the file path, just the name, and won't stick if I close and reopen the shortcut. Any idea why?
Impossible for me to guess since I can't see what you are doing. All I can suggest is trying it again, following along closely with what I am doing.

This looks similar to HyperScript. I do miss HyperCard. I wish Apple would bring it back. Even SuperCard won't run on newer Macs.
Sometimes Keynote can feel a lot like Hypercard. Just the addition of some basic scripting and it could be mostly there.
gary , why don't you create a udemy course about the shortcuts app that explains all the functions in it by your creative and enjoyable and practical ways.

It doesn't explain all the functions though. It is just a beginner course. A comprehensive one would be big (and expensive) and still wouldn't cover everyone's needs as you can do so much.

This sound pretty awesome ....but Apple can't even handle rules, in Mail, properly... I hate to think where my stuff would go if they get power over my documents. 😂😲
These aren't "rules." These are mini-apps you are creating.

@@macforme Right. But you were saying that Apple can't handle rules in Mail properly, so you were worried that what I am showing in this video would have the same issue. I was pointing out that what I show in this video is not the same thing as "rules" such as the rules in the Mail app.
