Get it through your thick skull. Russia is NOT occupying Crimea. They BEGGED Russia to protect them. They voted to leave Ukraine and the vote WAS certified by the UN observers, the western leaders just refused to acknowledge it as legitimate.

Hey, just to say I specifically came here to use your referal link, appreciate the great content Simon!
I live next to their naval base in Greece. I assure you once one of these vessels leaves the port her noise easily conceals the urban noises of a 100.00 population city (one hundred thousands).

Fascinating fact...the only remaining commercial hovercraft in the world is in Portsmouth UK. This still runs services to the Isle of Wight every thirty minutes at peak times. It is capable of 45 knots and has been providing a reliable service since 1965.
Playing fast and loose with the word "fascinating".
Thank you for the very James May fact!
Went on that a few times when i was a kid, cool way to travel.
my town fire department has a hovercraft. They had to get one after some lady fell through the ice in the local lake and they couldn't get out to her to save her. Before there was a bridge here there used to be a hovercraft ferry. Disappeared a long time ago though
@@jamesjross Lol, I like the fact, but had to like this comment because it's so savage.
I think large numbers of French EDA-R landing craft would be a better solution. Speed is still pretty good. Range is good. Can adjust draft and landing ramps depending on conditions. Gives much of the advantages of hovercraft without the drawbacks. Also spreads assets among more vessels, reducing vulnerability to incoming strikes.
Those look pretty cool, but the point of a LCAC is they can access 80% of the world's beaches, vs. a normal landing craft, which is around 17%. This falls in the latter category.
EDA-R has half the speed of Zubr - a pretty important property when it comes to hovercraft-based landing operations.
They're so loud and can be heard from such a distance that we could probably debate conscription in parliament then initiate it before this reached our shore.
Hovercraft shows up. Entire US military there to meet them guns aimed at the craft. Some taking pictures.
Admittedly, the din from that hovercraft would be preferred over the din from Parliament.

I'm love this!! Hovercraft are the coolest vehicle in the entire military, other than jets
You stated that the AK-630 fired 165mm rounds, this would make each barrel bigger that a main battle tank gun, in fact its a 6 barrel 30mm gun which is where the 630 in the name comes from

They should make a Gatling howitzer or something though.120-155mm or whatever . Just imagine hitting something direct or as artillery with such a high rate and caliber.

The cannon is NOT 165mm diameter. The diameter of the cannon is 30mm. Not sure why Simon put the length of the round rather than the diameter.

I've been seeing pictures of these things on Facebook & Twitter for years, I didn't actually think they were real.

If this thing is actually nitrous injected, that is fucking nuts and i like it.
Isn't this smaller than the old cross channel ferry between UK and France?
Nitrous oxide superchargers??? That makes no sense at all, you must have gotten that wrong. It has gas turbine engines.
Simon, do Fritz Klenner on Casual Criminalist. Your CC channel is the only one I feel that could do it justice. It's truly an example of truth being greater than fiction. I can assure you it happened here. His father was our family physician and good ol' Fritz filled in from time to time and loved talking about military weapons. You can prepare by reading Jerry Bledsoe's famous book "Bitter Blood". Make sure you have time to read it cause you won't want to put it down. After the book was released there was truly an outbreak of people laying out of work to read it. They also made a tv movie about it called, "In the Best of Families" starring Harry Hamlin, Kelly McGillis and Keith Carradine. The book Bitter Blood is much better. It's over 900 pages but that won't matter once you open it.
A nitrous oxide supercharger eh???
200 tons isn’t that much capacity. A couple of tank and their support.
The Soviets could have did some digging. Also, smaller amphibious landing ships would have been more maneuverable.

Largest ever air cushion vehicle? Really? I mean the SRN-4 looks a bit bigger to me (OK that's a civilian not military hovercraft and so undoubtedly a lot lighter but those things were absolutely massive. I used to work around the East Kent coast back in the early 80s and they were a common sight operating on the Dover to Calais route. They were damned impressive but I guess the channel tunnel killed them off in the end. A shame really as they were superb examples of old-school British engineering.
Yup they built everything bigger. But after they build anything they never spend any money taking care of it so it all just falls apart.

Tsar tank was built for the Russian empire in 1914-1915
Foundation of USSR was in 1922
Great video Simon! Another absurd and rash Russian design in an enormous historical list, to start with for instance the 1914 Tsar Tank. But it's only in favour of the rest of the world the Russians throw money at absurd inefficient projects all the time. And in the end making your crew completely crazy with noise and vibrations 😆That's sounds like the Concordski....
Russia did not occupy Crimea. Crimea residents moved to Russia with their belongings and also with their land. Remember...

Sounds and looks nice in theory, but in reality the sound of it alone would make it an easy target for anyone. I'd imagine it being much more loud than a fleet of old propeller airplanes starting up or flying across in low altitude.
What about commercial use?
@@TheCaptainSplatter Still too loud and most likely not economic compared to other options.
And exactly how many L-class ships can hold a Zubr in the well deck? Hint: rhymes with "hero." Or "nun."

The US navy loves their hovercraft, but there is definitely an upper limit when they just stop being useful. Though to be fair, had just about anyone BUT the russian's built this behemoth, it would likely have been far more successful.

Oh don’t be a blowhard
Man, you just gave me a flashback to something I haven't remembered in years.
As a kid, we lived near Virginia Beach. When I was about 7 or 8, one of my dads coworkers kept bragging about this beach he found that never had people there. He went every few weeks with his family and never saw another person.
Him and my dad took a day off and took all us kids and some friends. We had to park at a strip mall and walk about a mile on this tiny path to get there. Not a single person was there. We spent several hours having a great day at the beach. Around lunch time, we started hearing this "buzz" in the distance that kept getting louder. Within a couple minutes, we just saw what looked like clouds coming at us on the water. When they got closer (and FAR louder) a couple LCAC's came up on the beach and started dropping Marines a couple hundred yards away.
After a few minutes of watching this, a Marine Captain walked up to us and asked what we were doing there. Turns out, we were on a beach owned by the Navy for amphibious training. There was supposed to be a fence that somehow disappeared where we came in.
Unfortunately, by the time that was all worked out, the LCAC's were back at sea so we didn't get to see them up close. But the Marines let us hang out a bit longer and watch them work. Though, when we tried to go back a few weeks later, there was a new fence with a lot of signs up.
That was a fun day.
Mt Trashmore represent!
Ive fueled LCACS in Florida. Pretty cool up close.
Heyyyyyyyyy that shit is what I’ve been doing
@Paul Laprad sounds like the 80s
At 7 or 8 that’s awesome, you think they knew you entered the space or train every day?
This feels like something out of an RTS game rather than real life
In the mid 2000 and ought's, Textron Marine walked into the Sail-Loft I work at and asked us if we could build a couple of prototypes for the new upgraded skirts of the LCAC's as we had a computer plotter for designing sails. Those skirts could have a whole engineering episode done on them about how they are designed and made. They are very complex inside with baffles facing and pointing in every direction and we sewed the whole thing together using KEVLAR thread. We had a Textron engineer stand over our shoulders as we cut and sewed this whole project together bird dogging us the entire time. I was never so happy to finish a government contract in my whole life. Glad I did it for the experience and take pride knowing my work stood up.
All than an yet hidden telegraph poles buried hidden like bamboo traps in Vietnam or somewhere an it would all end rather quickly!
I saw one of the Hellenic Navy ones last year, whilst I was sailing around the Saronic. It was a few miles away and even from that distance it made an unearthly loud noise. I could see the three drive engines through binoculars, and it took a bit of Googling to find out what the hell I was looking at.
I also had the same experience around Hydra
If the American engineering philosophy is to make things bigger till they work, the Soviet philosophy was to make things bigger until they did not work i.e. Zubr and or became highly dangerous I.e. RMBK reactor.
If a US Navy LCAC is insanely loud(1mile away only takes the edge off), I can only imagine the sound this thing makes.
Hate to break it to you but there's no way those AK-630's fire 165mm or whatever you said. They're 30mm auto-cannons and they have two per vessel.
Love the Zubr. Badassery of epic proportions.
This seems like something which would show up in a post-apocalypse movie or game. It would look very dramatic coming over the horizon and discharging an unbelievable number of troops.
Would definitely feel at home in the Final Fantasy VII universe!
The Division 2 would like a word.

Division has something like that.
This, as you said, showcases the Soviet's habit of building the biggest for the sake of building the biggest. Since this thing cannot operate in the open ocean it's hard to imagine where the Soviets planned on using it. Invading Nome, Alaska? Maybe...The Baltic?
This is a 'shock and awe' for use against dissident groups operating in the huge marsh regions of the old USSR.
@@gearjammer3688 That makes sense. But still, I gather from the videos that this beast of a machine was almost as hard on its operators as its targets.
It seems to be a some kind of irresistible psychological drive for autocratic regimes. Hitler had his absurd guns and tank projects, Saddam wanted the biggest gun and so on.
The sea of azov or the black sea?
@@nicholasbrassard3512 Might be a little risky at the moment.
Gosh, us Americans have been known to scorn Soviets, BUT man did they make some epic machines of wonderment and yeah, often with size! 🤤
Less often with quality, but that's a small corner to cut when you want to show off!
At the 2:15 mark you say the rotary cannon shoots 165mm rounds, I was artillery in the national guard and our ammunition was 155mm, so something in your notes is off, a 165mm round would be 6.4 inches wide there's no way that thing shoots 5,000 6.4" shells a minute. I even had the close captioning on just to be sure and it wrote out what I thought I heard.
Yeah he got quite a few of the military specs wrong. The rotary cannon is of course 30mm calibre.
I’m sorry…. How big and how fast are the AK-630 shells firing?
He said 5000, 165mm rounds per minute. That would likely be the the most interesting gun ever made. He should have said 5000, 30X165 mm rounds per minute.
As with so many Soviet era ideas: ambitious… but perhaps a little too ambitious.
Reminds me of the old SRN4s that I used to cross the English Channel in during the 80s and 90s. I remember they were quite noisy too.
I've missed the most important question: How many eels does it hold until it's full?

Hovercraft are, like Supersonic Airliners, utterly impractical contrivances which demonstrate - albeit in different fields ; the fact that simply because a Thing is inherently difficult and expensive to achieve or build and induce to operate as designed - does NOT mean that such a Thing is actually worthy of being done at all.
Concord/e and the Cross-Channel Hovercraft, like the Bristol Brabazon and the Saunders-Roe Princess are in the same class as Nukeyoulater Explosive Warheads...; in that one does indeed need to display a lot of sustained Cleverness in order to build one and get it to function as intended - but one would need to be insane or an idiot (or both) to WANT to possess such a thing and be responsible for the cost of it's upkeep and maintenance and operation.

I joined the Navy in 1970, knowing they were moving to GT's so I thought I'll be an MM cause they'll take people that know turbines and stuff and let them convert when they came up with the rate. Nope, they took the Engineman's and made them Gas Turbine Techs. I was told it was because they used the same fuel! Dumbest thing I think I heard!
