    Nicely done. First thing I saw, as the elk dropped, was the road in behind!
    Now that's "road hunting" walk all day and knock one down with access. Can't get any better

    I had 3 whitetails in my freezer for 2020, one of which was a huge 10 pointer. Two in 2019, again one was a huge 10 pointer. Meat is what it's all about. You can't eat antlers. I'll take a big bodied doe over a small bodied buck any day!

    I feel your pain on self filming a hunt man. I packed around my DSLR on a tripod all archery season. I got my only bow shot on camera and some other footage, but it is very tough to get good material and put it together. of course, the first and only day I rifle hunted this year, I tagged a nice 5 pt with my camera in the truck. congrats on the filled tag. I look forward to more videos from you.

    I grew up roaming the national forest solo tracking wildlife. I started hunting as soon as I was old enough. There are animal meats I like to eat that can't be bought in the store. But most of all, alone in the wilderness is where I feel most alive and close to God.

    No doubt about that first rifle shot tagging the bull, as waikarimoana noted. That elk was dead; he just didn't realize it yet. Still, I understand why you anchored him with another round.
    I also brought one out whole (almost) by myself in 1985. It was in Montana too, on Line Creek, south of Belfry. He was a fuzzy-horned spike, and my wool-gloved hands kept slipping off his antlers as I dragged him down toward camp. Frustrated, I finally cut his head off and tied it into the open abdomen. Having cut a length of aspen limb for a crossbar, I looped para-cord around the rib cage, brought it up between the forelimbs, and tied onto my aspen "handlebar." I trudged downslope dragging that elk behind me like a toboggan. When encountering uphill sections--thankfully, they were few and short--I had to face the carcass, dig my heels in and pull for all I was worth. The line snapped one of those times, and I tumbled 'ass over teakettle' backward through snow and rocks, marring the bluing of my slung Colt Sauer's barrel in the process.
    Darkness overtook about the time I reached the old jeep trail that accessed the canyon. I began seeing light slashing around the hillside, eventually hearing engine noise as well. I made it to within a couple hundred yards from my camp when two hunters in the vehicle caught up with me; but I gladly accepted their offer of an elk tow and a ride the rest of the way in. The guys told me they'd been amazed to come around a point and see a man on foot dragging a whole elk down the middle of the road. Said they'd been wondering up until then, because they could clearly see the drag marks in the snow, yet they couldn't make out the hoof tracks of the horse doing the dragging!

    quick question, how many elk are you able to harvest each year in Montana?

    • @willong1000
      @willong1000 6 років тому

      Guillermo Ramirez, a basic answer to your question is one elk on a general license. However, like most western states, a complete answer gets more complex every year due to special hunts, licenses, permits and tags. States usually post full hunting regulations online, in addition to the paper editions available in stores. You may find a fuller answer to your question for Montana here: fwp.mt.gov/hunting/licenses/all/

  • @williamchristy3063
    @williamchristy3063 3 роки тому

    He who hesitates is lost! Hunting is a good way to learn to stay alive in enemy territory, for a veteran. In enemy territory, if the game spot you before you get a shot at them, you're dead! Sometimes, it becomes more about filming yourself hunting than actually hunting. Just food for thought!

    • @willong1000
      @willong1000 6 років тому +1

      Hey Branden, that phenomenon is actually pretty common, though somewhat dependent upon atmospheric conditions and lighting. It shows up fairly frequently in hunting videos that feature shots at longer ranges. You likely won't see it very often on your own shots--at least not for normal hunting distances--because you are in recoil. Try long range target shooting with a friend. Cool weather (dense air) and high humidity will increase your chances.
      In the right light, one can sometimes actually see glint off a bullet, somewhat akin to firing a tracer round. From 1978 to 1988 I owned a gun and archery shop. I used to burn alot of powder back then. I can remember three different occasions when I was able to see most of the bullet's flight due to light glint. Two of the incidents were with jacketed bullets from a rifle; and one was 240-grain cast lead bullets out of a revolver. All three times the shooting was at extreme range. The copper jacketed bullet flights looked like gold arcs; the lead bullets like silver streaks, also arched of course.
      In eastern Montana, on a Mule deer hunt featured in an episode of his "Western Extreme" hunting show, Jim Burnworth puts a nice buck down with a single shot from his .338 Lapua at over 1000 yards. The bullet wake (which is actually a shock wave, think of a boat moving through water) on that lengthy shot showed up especially well. The arc of the flight and the time to impact was impressive.

    Nothing wrong with a good meat hunt every now and then. Reminds me of mine and my buddies hunt last year we hunted for a big mule deer for several days and after a couple missed opportunities we ended up shooting a spike on the last 15 minutes of his tag. Go to my channel and check it out if you want. Remi is the man, my favorite hunter.

    How many times have you been out mixing it up with some elk and see a legal bull and screw the whole thing up because you've unloaded your gun and are still in hot pursuit? Why not put your safety on and hunt while you hike? If I had to stop and load my gun Everytime I jumped something I would have alot less notches on my post, Please brother do yourself a favor load your gun when you step in the woods and leave it loaded be safe as you always are and your good I promise,good luck in all you do in the hunting world!
