Dave, I’m in Southern California and it comes up as $8-$9 to ship a 1lb item ground advantage. I think that’s the norm after USPS put prices up in January.
Blows my mind that people do not understand all "Free Shipping" means is that you include the shipping into the price so therefore you are not losing money like so many believe. Free shipping seems to increase sells and the only money you lose is the money people are overcharging people to ship their item. Meaning the customer pays $15 to ship and it only cost you $10 to ship so now you pocket an extra $5.
Free shipping has never worked out for me, personally. When I figured in the costs and raise the selling price, all that did was increase the amount of lowball offers, and if I decided not to allow offers, then my prices sat higher than others that have the LOWER PRICE (plus shipping). And then there is physical media, which, granted, isn't a huge margin market to begin with, but folks are selling these at seemingly a loss. $5 free shipping is a loss after fees and supplies, unless someone is paying you to sell it. But, it wouldn't surprise me that some sellers are willing to take a loss on the individual penny-ante items.
I mentioned this in one of your previous videos but there is a setting in eBay that lets you pass the savings on to the customer for shipping. If you go in and enable it it will give the buyer the commercial rate and not charge them any extra
I use the setting to give the commercial rate to customers. BUT I also add a handling fee to it to cover the expense of the shipping supplies. It allows for flexibility on my side with costs, while also giving the buyers a lower rate that is better and more enticing than retail. I'm usually getting a little back.
I switched to flate rate shipping last year, and made a world of difference. I use a tiered system starting at $5.95 - $7.95 for anything less than a pound. Goes up from there based on size and weight. Golf irons, putters and woods are $15.95 and $24.95 for drivers. Its ok to make money on the shipping.
I've been knocking down the weight on packages when listing. You still make a little to cover fees-on-shipping, but it charges the customer less to make your listing more appealing. Sale today on a 2lb package: Had listed for 1lb, $8.40 shipping paid. Cost me $7.40ish to ship the 2 pound package.
I don't know if eBay has this, but on Pirate Ship, I was able to take a look at my shipping costs over the year and it allowed me to setup a rough pricing strategy for flat-rate shipping. For most items, charging $5.99 - $9.99 shipping depending on the size/weight of the object is the way to go for me and as of right now, my average shipping cost within pirate ship for all items I've shipped is sitting at $7.98. It's pretty rare that I overpay for shipping. I actually just looked at my total charged for shipping vs my total shipping costs from Pirate Ship and I overcharged by about 10% on shipping by doing this.
Love it Dave, reminds me of when I used to work for a Sporting Goods company and we locked up all the Knives (same reason they could be a weapon), but we had machetes just hanging on the wall in bulk for any customer to grab. My guess is the CEO of that Sporting Goods company went to go work for Mercari lol. Have a great day, I'm going to go buy Scissors off Mercari.
I do calculated buyer pays shipping but I've always given my buyers my shipping discount so that saves them some money. I did recently add $1.00 handling to all my calculated business policies to cover any slight overages if I have to use a bigger box or a package ends up weighing more than I anticipated.
I had trouble trying to figure out shipping too. I decided to do the flat rate and most of the time I can hit it pretty close. I do put free shipping on media items.
Dave as a buyer when searching for an item I use the eBay filter to search for lowest priced item which takes in consideration shipping, so it really doesn’t matter what it says about shipping I just buy the lowest priced item
Hey Dave, I have pass the shipping discount along to the buyer turned on, but recently if the box size is wrong from when I originally listed the item and the actual box is bigger I got charged more then the buyer paid, so Pro tip make sure when your listing the box size is bigger then you think you need. Ebay changed to cubic rate
I use a flat weight system for shipping. Every item kind of falls into a certain weight category for me. I believe the reason why buyers may be overpaying for shipping is because of dimensions. So I don't really have this problem because over the years I've come to the realization that all the items I pick up fit into certain size boxes so those are the only boxes I have. There is the occasional one-off and I will shape a box to size. For the most part my buyers will pay up to $3 more for shipping but that's because of my flat weight system. We are always learning I didn't even know there was an option to change how buyers are charged for shipping be it discounted or standard and I've been doing this for 25 years.
I see my buying addiction in you Dave. I have learned to source items that I would keep for myself if I eventually decide to keep the item. And I don't source much clothes but when I do, I buy what I would wear in case I wind up keeping it or it just wouldn't sell for whatever reason. As for the knives, I saw you looking at them and thought it would be too risky to sell them on eBay. One of the "other" platforms has no problems with people listing weapons of mass destruction such as a "pocket knife" LOL
agree with kevin, i just do flat charge for shipping on all my items, as a long to reseller I know what stuff is going to cost, and the times I under charge balances with the shipping costs that I make a few bucks.
Yes Dave, the best way to combat the high shipping cost is too pass the ebay saving on too the buyer. As long as you put in correct weight and put dimensions in correctly or at 12x12x12 to start (because ebay now has cubic rates) it will never under charge the buyer. I did it for a year and never was under charged. I actually switched back here recently tho and I am just discounting the standard rated by 15% because I like to try to get the fees on the shipping covered at well. Working ok so far but it has not been a full week yet since this change.
I've been using the way you eventually set up (pass savings to customer) and it works great but you absolutely need to get your weight and measurements correct when listing which can be tricky when you don't know what box you're going to use. Just overestimate and should be fine. Also you can add a surcharge to all prices (I have mine set at 50 cents) to cover cost of box/bag/packing.
Dave - thoughts are with you. I sold £4k of goods in 6 months but had to cancel a bunch of stuff as my dad had died. Ebay had absolutely no compassion. I wish there was somewhere else to sell.
Our phones do listen, you know, tablets, too. I have said v to my husband that we really needed something, and immediately when I opened google, the top search line was for that item.
For prices, yard sales are definitely the way to go. And I look forward to warmer months when I can go to them. But I love going to estate sales more. Pay up compared to yard sales, but it's a better way, at least for me, to find a variety of items in bulk in one place that I really like to sell. And I like to infer what life was like for the people who owned the stuff as I go through their estate.
Hey, Scott Kilmer of Resellers. Remember if you pass on the shipping savings to the buyer, YOU pay the 15% seller fee on that shipping AND pay for packing materials. If you are selling things around $15 you need a huge profit margin AND volume to make good money. Oh, and probably, a stock boy in the cereal aisle.
Ebay charged $15.70 calculated for ground advantage (from NY to the West Coast), on two different items I sold last week. Both items were slightly over a pound, and each item cost me under $10 to ship. That has to have a negative effect on sales. I am going to set up a mid range flat rate price because many of my items fall in that range. New issue since the postal service rate change last week.
I clicked on the video early because of the title. No chance ebay hears the case of the bad photos. She not even a customer of yours. You should tell her to buy something or get to stepping.
I’m in south Florida and I do calculated shipping. It’s outrageous what eBay charges the buyer to ship sometimes. I’ve considered doing flat rate but I’m not sure. What I do is I just give them the best shipping for what they pay. So if they pay 8 9 for ground advantage but it only costs me 8 for priority then I send it priority. Hope that makes sense. But I do feel calculated hinders my sales
Flat rate is a waste, you don't get the benefit of calculated or free shipping. For free shipping when you list something and are going off comps and see the item is selling for about $50 total that is the price you have to meet, no matter how you go about shipping. I have everything listed with either GA or Media and that allows me to pick whatever service I want when I go to ship because I will be choosing an equal service (UPS, Fedex) or superior service (priority).
I know lost usps packages happens but it has never happened to me. The tracking just stopped updating and item was in the town of buyer. Buyer opens case for item not received. Messages to buyer go unanswered. eBay closed the case in favor of buyer and issued a refund. This is crazy and I really think buyer got the item at the post office and the clerk just didn’t scan it as delivered.
Had Mercari pull down a knife listing I'd done within 12 hrs but had a Spyderco listed just a week previously for a few days which sold. I think that policy is so broad it borders on stupidity.
I dont know if youre aware of this but you can set your account up so the customer sees your discounted cost of postage. That way its let likely to scare customers away.
@@WellnessWizdom I've had my account set up that way a long time and haven't had a problem. Also I live in Maine. So no lower rates because I live in the middle of the country.

standard shipping for ebay price you have fees that come out of the shipping and you loose money on shipping. you will get burnt. i lost on average .75 cents on shipping on 10 dollars or less. The more shipping is the higher the fees from ebay
If sales are up you might be doing well as Craigslist Hunter stated in his last video, sales were down online and in store 25% last year and continued to be so this year, so hey, there you go.
I offer the discounted rate and it really helps. It is off where they undercharge the customer a little bit I have noticed but if you was doing free shipping it shouldn't matter. As far as Mecari the only knives you can sell is kitchen knives which is usually what people stab others with. 😆 but those are just fine. Go figure.
You could be like Philly Plip and say your items are in Pennsylvania. Don't know if he does it on purpose for cheaper shipping or not, but I guess he hasn't been caught in a year. :)
Free shipping is the way to go. I've seen items with the "great price" blue tag + shipping, which is not true. For example, eBay advertises an item that's listed for $50 + 13.59 shipping as a "great price" vs a $59 99 free shipping item, when in fact the free shipping item is cheaper.
Maybe it’s the length of the blade? I was given a huge bag of vintage camel cigarette fishing pocket knives a few years ago. I made about $500 on them all but for some reason I feel the blade length might be your problem. I might be totally wrong too. I like thrift stores but the reason why is I live in an odd area where a lot of rich folks have second homes. The rest of the population is poor and the majority of things I have found at yard sales are so low value that they are not worth reselling. My thrift stores get a lot from the second home people and they make me money.
I actually found a setting in there that allows a percentage of the shipping discount to be given to the customers. It's under your Shipping discount settings. Go to Selling Preferences, then Shipping Preferences, then near the bottom of that page there's Shipping discount settings and you can change things there.
I thought maybe it was a glitch with eBay. We live in Ohio and it’s the same thing here $8-9 for everything at 13oz to 1lb. My sales have tanked since this change. Might have to rethink how I do shipping going forward.
Dave your awesome love the videos haven’t bought anything wish I could poor. eBay store sells one item about every three days started November 2022. Lol got almost 500 items in my store. Granny’s-41 keep up the great work. Also you have a very nice family.
I give my buyers 15% off retail rate and it still leaves enough for my box and supplies once I go over 1lb. If it's under one pound it usually charges the customer just a few cents higher than what I actually pay for the label. But you have to be careful if you use media rates because we pay retail for those also so I don't discount those. I set up media as flat rate. I just don't like flat rate for ground advantage or priority. I don't think it's fair to your customers who live closer to you. As for your bear lady, if she did manage to cause you to take it down I would put it on What Not and then tell her since she didn't want you to sell it on Ebay, you sold it on another platform at auction and it only brought (a low amount dollar). She needs to chill. I'm an artist and have sold quite a bit of my work. But once I've sold it, it's no longer my business what someone does with it. I'll probably find some of it at Goodwill one day. 🤣
21:50 The majority of your flea market sellers know what they have and even though they sell it cheaper they’re getting cash right away while you tie it down and wait for someone to purchase on ebay for a higher price. I’d rather tie down a dollar or two, when I buy at a yardsale, than 10-20 if I buy at the flea market. For this reason I rather go to yardsales.
Dave instead of doing the cheaper shipping try dropping the price a couple of dollars to make up for the discount you get. I always do free shipping for small items and anything large over 1kg I do calculated shipping.
Not only does charging shipping create a lower perceived price, it also helps in sending and receiving offers, way less low ballers when the shipping is covered. Publix manager?? Hahaha they’d start you bringing in carts or stocking shelves if you’re lucky. Most managers worked for years in other positions.
Yea, they took 2 collectable pocketknives off my site as well . Said it can be used as a weapon? I wanted to respond by saying “ did you see John Wick? He killed 3 guys in a bar with a pencil.”😂
Bear lady isn't the customer, the should not side with her. My mother bludgeoned someone with a lamp. A 13 yo I watch has a golf club in her room. I have a baseball bat in my living room. Flea markets you get caught up in the atmosphere and buy, I have that problem at some estate sales too.
A few months ago I got a message from ebay saying they removed my listing because it was racist/vulgar etc, I thought "OMG, what did I post" NEVER would I post anything like that. To my surprise it was a DR SUESS book of all things, completely stupid but I can list a Playboy book etc and they're fine LOL
Why don’t you test your shipping theory by using the eBay shipping calculator or USPS shipping calculator or Pirate Ship. Instead of guessing. By the way it costs me the same thing 1lb or less it cost $7.80 to ship Ground Advantage and I’m in NJ
Anything can be used as a weapon...even paper. I think they were probably basing it on blade length...as some states make it illegal to carry a switchblade that is past 3 fingers long. I hope you find a workaround for the bear lady. She must be really lonely to make her life mission to harass peeps over first impressions of "her" bear.
The bear lady's demeanor is a hair grizzly. Mercari is even weirder than eBay sometimes. Sure, you could use a cased knife as a weapon. People have used kitchen knives as weapons. Cain killed Abel with a rock. Shipping kills sales if it looks too high, but savvy buyers know it's being paid somehow and search best price including shipping. RE: flea markets. I have similar problems at estate sales. Gambled $40 on a jewelry bag. Better odds than a lottery ticket, but the ring I thought might be a home run turned out to be a bench rider. That said, the last time I bought another junk bag with a ring, it was 14k with a ruby and antique.
Yard sales people just want that stuff gone so they will probably take less for stuff. Flea markets that's a lot of people's business can probably have to pay to set up so they charge more and probably don't wanna go down on price unless they need it sold badly
eBay does not always side with the buyer. If you are a Top Rated Seller you only have to ever offer back 50% of the refund. eBay aways takes care of their top rated sellers and will side with you as a seller and protect you from things outside of your control. If you made sure you became one Dave you would save money on shipping get more of a boost in listings visibility and conversion and have 100 % feedback.
Does that 50% refund still apply even if the buyer selects it's broken, doesn't match the description, or some other reason that puts fault on the seller?
The bear lady just needs to get over the fact that her bear is being sold with photos that aren't to her liking. Otherwise people like Xavier Roberts cabbage patch inventors family who own rights to them, could harass every seller with dodgy cabbage pictures. Surely that's just not reasonable.

The rest of the population is poor and the majority of things I have found at yard sales are so low value that they are not worth reselling. My thrift stores get a lot from the second home people and they make me money.
I've heard people getting rocks shipped back but never rotten carrots....gross.....
I wish ebay would let you pass on 1/2 of the shipping discount. But until that happens I have flat rate that essentially accomplishes that.
I actually found a setting in there that allows a percentage of the shipping discount to be given to the customers. It's under your Shipping discount settings. Go to Selling Preferences, then Shipping Preferences, then near the bottom of that page there's Shipping discount settings and you can change things there.
You could in crease the shipping up to the next weight price to charge the customer a dollar or two more
I thought maybe it was a glitch with eBay. We live in Ohio and it’s the same thing here $8-9 for everything at 13oz to 1lb. My sales have tanked since this change. Might have to rethink how I do shipping going forward.
QUESTION: Isnt shipping lower because of eBay discounts?
I live in a small town 3,000 people and 20 years ago some one was killed with a screwdriver. No joke its a true story.
Oh wow 😯
Dave your awesome love the videos haven’t bought anything wish I could poor. eBay store sells one item about every three days started November 2022. Lol got almost 500 items in my store. Granny’s-41 keep up the great work. Also you have a very nice family.
Thanks for watching!!
Everyday 👍🏻
fees come out with the shippin cost when you do that
I give my buyers 15% off retail rate and it still leaves enough for my box and supplies once I go over 1lb.
I do $4.50 - $5 flat shipping on everything. Unless it's big and heavy. Then it's calculated.
Shopper Dave, would be a cool sticker, lol.....I'll take one
I swear you get into so many predicaments
Next time you list a pocket knife list it as a Case letter opener
Dave did you send Kevin a bag of carrots? Sounds like something you would do 😆
Lol I work at Publix. I'm a part time grocery clerk.
Do you keep track of your sourcing costs? Mileage, cost of items, etc. If you do, can you claim that on your taxes?
I offered the discounts for everything but ground advantage
True, true
Your postal system sounds so confusing.
Baby mama drama Dave in the house!
Hi Dave! Liking the videos.
Why don’t you test your shipping theory by using the eBay shipping calculator or USPS shipping calculator or Pirate Ship. Instead of guessing. By the way it costs me the same thing 1lb or less it cost $7.80 to ship Ground Advantage and I’m in NJ
I'd tell the artist to go ahead and make an offer and she can then Resell with the photos worthy of her art for the price she feels fit.
Flea markets are usually sort of procey, imo. Garage sales rule!😅
If ebay was spying on us I would have a lot more sales 😢 been doing crazy on whatnot.
Mercari isn’t eBay. You can’t sell knives or food.
Bro all that hair on your shirt lol
So is it on hold or not?
@@bethmcmullan7686 Yup.
Can't you Blick her?
eBay does not always side with the buyer.
DAMN I have only told you like 3 time in the comments to CHANGE YOUR SHIPPING SETTINGS. WOW.
so do you feel heard?!
Yes...THANKS. Really do love watching your videos.@@ADHDaveFlips
The bear lady just needs to get over the fact that her bear is being sold with photos that aren't to her liking.
Otherwise people like Xavier Roberts cabbage patch inventors family who own rights to them, could harass every seller with dodgy cabbage pictures. Surely that's just not reasonable.
