I think people are privileged in some ways but not others.
Sure, you can have a family that lives in a mansion while another family lives under a bridge and say the rich are the privileged.
      but...
The family under the bridge are a very tight crew. They love the hell out of each other. They would die for each other. They will always stick together...even broke and under a bridge.
The rich family despises each other. They can't even sit down and have a meal together without screeching. Each member spends their days wishing the rest would just hurry the fuck up and die so they can have everything all to themselves. If any of them were to burst into flames, none of them would even waste enough piss to extinguish the flames to save them.
I'm going with the poor having more privilege on this one.

I’m a maternal/newborn nurse and I get all kinds of patients from all different backgrounds. Some of my patients would come from the inner city and didn’t have much daily contact with white people. There were times I could even feel that they didn’t trust me, or even like me, when I’d walk into the room. I’d spend 12 hours with this new mom and baby and their family helping them in the most intimate ways. By the end of my shift they usually didn’t want me to leave because I care for all of my patients the same and I do it with love and kindness. We come in contact with people every day that are a little different from us, different backgrounds, races, whatever. We need to take these opportunities to treat each other with respect. It’s daily day to day interactions that may just change someone’s mind about who they think you are, not wearing a silly pin or putting people in categories. We’re all just trying to get through life.

I'm SoCal California and latino folks show me how they feel 24/7 everywhere i go. Of course not all of them but it's vast majority. Most of my lifelong friends are latino and even they still wont admit any of it but it's truth. They have a deep taught hate and since they're majority now and all the coddling they get from news and tax payer funds they're becoming bolder by the day. It's all pretty sad since it is whytes who have openly voted to spend trillions on helping generations of them only to be discriminated against. My daughters tell me their children are extremely hateful and choose a whyte to pick on in school until they mentally break one then move on to the next.

That's pretty much it but the left look at the high amount of fatherless households in the black community then look at all the fathers in the white community and go "oh it's all race based." No when you give way more to single mothers than families you tell these mothers they don't need to be with a man when the government will give you more money than the father likely brings in THEN give them child support on top of that.

There were plenty of people who quit, saying Bob picked on them because they were from this "group" or that "group". Truth was, Bob picked on anybody who underperformed, including little ol me, so I worked hard because it was a decent job and I didn't take Bob's criticism personally. I didn't have that job because I was privileged, but because I worked hard. Bob wld have let me go in a heartbeat if I didn't, and, looking back, I think that makes him one of the least discriminatory people I've ever known. It is actually insulting for someone to "take it easy on you" for being in a certain group, it means they don't believe you can do better.

Prejudice is a learned response. A person has positive or negative experiences, all tied to a particular ethnic group, and it generates an associated emotion with that group. That is why racism is difficult to remove. It is an emotional, knee-jerk response, not an intellectual mindset. It takes time and conditioning to reprogram your emotional reflexes, but it can be done.

      Affirmative action is racist.
It’s hindering one person over another based on their race; racial discrimination.
      In a world where you can get a degree online for free if you look hard enough there isn’t really a need or excuse for a race being “held back” unless it’s by institutions set specifically to do so;
In short there is systemic racism but the people complaining about it keep voting for the people who made the system (democrats).

I think we have much more of a classism issue. I grew up in a low blue color (i.e. - white trash) neighborhood. Had food stamps, had lunch tickets for school, got clothes from garage sales, etc. The convenience stores sure eyed the white kids in our neighborhood when we walked in. Shoplifting issues galore. Hence the shoplifting. I so enjoyed being a free maid and nanny, losing most of my childhood, and staying out of sight of the equally drunk construction guys she brought home. I also grew up poor, although God blessed me with a loving, hard-working mother. I've had to deal with a lot of racism in my life due to my skin color, but I just shrugged it off as people being ignorant. Everyone has obstacles to deal with in their lives. People perceive me as "white" (although I'm actually a pale, olive color), and sometimes assume I have "white privilege." One of the strangest examples of racism is where I offered my morning meal to a guy on the street. (I generally only eat two meals a day, morning and evening.) He told me he hadn't anything to eat, so I responded, "You probably need it more than I do," and gave my food to him. He said, "You're good. Your people take care of you." I asked him what he meant, and he responded, "White people all got each other's back."
In my life, nobody has ever "had my back" aside from my mother and God. I have always had to survive as best I can. I try to remember to be thankful for all God has given me, but I have never perceived being "white" as benefiting me. On the contrary, it has often been a burden. Some people see me as a danger or enemy, others see me as a freak or oddity. Personally, I care only about a person's character, but racists will remind me at every opportunity what color I am, and you find them everywhere.

Van sadly I found years ago White folks are far less welcome in black neighborhoods than black entering a white neighborhood. This from a woman warned I should not go into the housing project my friend lived in. Though I wouldn't be scared away from visiting my friend by her neighbors she was beat up over my visits, she finally told me she'd just have to come to my house. She was shocked when my neighbors invited her to Barbques and over to swim with her kids. My next door neighbor took her and her kids horseback riding. She later rented a house down the street. I was raised a half mile from Detroit, being chased from just walking down the streets was a weekly thing. Not saying all black people are prejudice but I can say I never saw white people chase people out of their towns because of color. I live in a Hood in Pontiac Michigan now and say things are getting worse in the last two years not better. I have lived here for 20 years now and the last two years have been accosted three times for walking in my own neighborhood. I'm sad the direction this country is going. My five grandchildren are Tri- racial, Mexican, black and white a true testimony to "Can't we all get along?"

I grew up in a very poor family 🤷🏻 I don't know what privilege was afforded to a poor white girl..
I wasn't chosen before anyone else, I wasn't offered first place, I wasn't given anything before anyone.
We had all to my memory been treated exactly the same.
I had a friend named Tabitha growing up we always had a great time playing. My family always treated her with the utmost respect, we were always taught to treat people how we wanted to be treated.
Sadly I eventually lost touch with Tabitha :( I remember that I was never invited to her house and not because she didn't want me to but because her father didn't like me.
It wasn't until a lot later that I learned that the reason he didn't like me is because I'm white.
I grew up in a family who is very much against any form of racism towards anyone, I was always taught that we are all the same. Even though we have different cultures, different upbringing, different customs and different values we are all the same inside.
So I've never looked at someone's skin and thought I was better because I have white skin 🤷🏻
I guess i was already out of school by the time they started trying to taint innocent children :/
The people doing that and Believeing it's ok are pure evil.
We are not all the same and we are not all different. How we choose to act and behave is entirely on us. Blaming others for the choices we make is like blaming a fish for not being able to walk on land.
I hope for a day that will come when we stand United together and stop believing in those who try and divide us. We are children of God and in his image we will be strong and proud of all that he has given. For it is to him we owe all, Not the greedy politicians who wish to harm us.

You shouldn’t be embarrassed or ashamed by where you come from, especially when you have done your business, grinded, and created a good life for yourself and your family. That’s an accomplishment, a hell of one. That’s something to be proud of. Same as when an immigrant comes over and starts with nothing and builds a life. Doing better, and preparing your next generation to better than you is what this country is about: achievement, striving to do better than those that came before you. Keep it movin. You seem much more at ease and less angry ever since you started to release the anchor that you had been dragging around most of your life. It really is a beautiful thing to see. The freedom to know that you can do whatever you want if you work for it is really the gift that this country provides, and you finally realized it. 🙏👊

In 1968 as a white girl, I experienced a brief moment of prejudice. It’s a long story but suffice to say I found myself in a black neighborhood in Oakland California and the only way out was to walk through it. It was a hot day and my frIends and I stopped in a Dime Store to get a drink. We took our place in line but as our turn came up the cashier would serve those behind us first. We endured “stink eye” stares and the humiliation of feeling hated. Finally one of the customers insisted we get our turn. At the time I was shocked and sad. Later I realized what a gift that was because I so ignorant at that young age about people. In my little corner of the world prejudice was only something we heard about. I had never seen it before and I didn’t like it then when it happened to me. When our all white high school got it’s first two black students my crowd embraced them with open arms, so the later Oakland experience was a shock. I’m 70 now and I’m happy to say that the amount of true bigots I have met in my life wouldn’t fill a teaspoon with peas. I feel I HAVE lived a privileged life but not because I’m white but because I live in the United States of America.

The second favoritism or privilege's that I encountered was observing how those in the "The Pretty People Club" get freebees and likes and benefits of all kinds that the rest of us do not get. Jerry Seinfeld did an episode on his 90s comedy show when he dated a very pretty woman. He enjoyed the privilege's because he was the boyfriend. Tall guys of all races get lots of female attention, call it height privilege's. And black guys everywhere get "black athlete" privilege's when they are NOT an athlete, they just look like they might be one. These guys always play that up by wearing the sports clothes.

The pretty people club is definitely a thing- not only from a marketing standpoint, but also from an “average” or “below average” looking person standpoint. Clubs will use things such as “ladies night” to attract women without a cover charge or for reduced drink rates because it will draw larger male crowds.
Then, as far as the second scenario, average or below average looking people will offer small gifts or favors just for a fleeting glance from someone they perceive to be more physically desirable than themselves. Often there is nothing wrong with how these people look, they just lack the self confidence to approach and meet people.

With a couple of decades as a hiring manager, I can tell you skin color was never a consideration. I wanted someone who was going to excel in their responsibilities. If they do, they make me look good, we both earn more money and we both have greater job security. That is the sweet spot.

I'm white and I can debunk most of the white privilege myth with my own life because when I was younger and dressed in the late 90s and early to mid 2000s hip hop style kinda like Eminem and I've walked into malls, shops and Wal-Mart's and some security guards watched me like I was gonna steal something and I'm white so it must of been the baggy jeans that were like two or three times the size for me at 15 and a baggy t-shirt or a sweater or a hoody that was also two of three times the size for me and this one time where security was on me while I was wearing the same kind of hip hop baggy clothes this black guy wearing let's say a more preppy style of clothes like Carlton from the fresh prince of bel air and the mall security didn't care about him but they watched me so yeah lol

Man as a white male, I wanna know when my privilege shows up. Out work others and stop making excuses and you will see where that gets you VS playing victim and hoping others make you better. You control your own destiny!!

I am a 65 year old white woman and I have never thought of myself as having white privilege. I have always had to work for everything I have. If people go back they would find out whites were slaves also. Thomas Sowell needs to go and teach history to high school kids.

I somewhat remember my first time experiencing "white privilege". It was in 6th or 7th grade (can't remember exactly) when the principal came to our class asking if we could make a banner for the school, with the best artists. Four of us were selected. One Chinese girl, one Korean girl, one Taiwanese girl. I was the only white and only boy selected for the group; I felt so privileged.
Also, the girls banded together to boss me around 😞 they came up with the ideas; I was just a pair of hands. I just realized I was oppressed by girls 😳 DOWN WITH THE MATRIARCHY!

So you're supposed to feel bad and spend your entire life in a constant state of guilt and attempting to redeem and make amends for something you yourself didn't do but something rather something nebulous and undefinable that's entirely out of your own control just by virtue of being born.
Sounds like Catholicism and Original Sin to me.

Please keep putting out this kind of content! I went back through your vids and watched your progression and it definitely love the fact that black and brown people are opening there ears and eyes to the lies that they have been told for the last 50 years

Hey Van , this reminds me of the voter ID video that you did from Berkeley. The college students thought that people of color didn't know how to use a computer , or find the local DMV........What!? How insulting to think someone has privilege over you. "One day , people will be judged.....not by the color of their skin , but by the content of their character".

Van, you have said the most intelligent and useful thing I have ever heard anyone say about this issue.
And you are also right about some people are trying to divide us. We should all be brothers and sisters. I know that will never happen completely, but I have hope that decent people will see through the manipulation.
    Thanks for your great posts!
    Lots of respect!!

I am confused. Do all whites get WHITE PRIVILAGE ? HOW DID I MISS THE BOAT. I have struggled all of my life. I grew up poor and living on food stamps as a kid. I remember going to the CHEAPEST university in the midwest because that was all I could afford, SURE maybe if I was smarter or a super athlete I could have gone to a better school but I was neither smart nor a super athlete. While i was in college I remember, on a Sunday after noon, studying in the library working my ass off in Pre- law writing legal depositions and memorandums and each Sunday several Minority members of the basket ball team who were on full rides were being tutored on how to read, reading at what sounded like maybe a 5th grade level. I could not afford to finish college so I enlisted in the Marines where I saw, ON OCCASION NOT VERY OFTEN, some Minorities getting promoted over better qualified Marines simply to comply with AFIRMATIVE ACTION LAWS . I never made it to Law School because I never had the money to go. I worked hard at the career I did work in and had many difficulties due to the nature of my career ( nothing to do with minorities ) and difficulty in marriage. In 2008 I was divorced from my cheating X wife and I was left Homeless over night ( again nothing to do with any minority BUT I received no PRIVILAGE for being white either ). I lived in a truck for a year and a half working 2 full time jobs to support my X and my 3 kids ( my Kids whom I love to this day and still have a GREAT relationship with to this day ). In 2010 I tried to buy a house on contract and the guy SCREWED ME OVER and I lost $35,000 in that deal , no attorney wanted to help . In 2011 I retired from my job and went over seas with the US DOS as a contractor to Afghanistan. In 2012 I paid CASH for a house for me and my kids. By this time ALL of my debts Bills House and Car were all paid off in FULL. In 2015 I owed the IRS some back taxes from 2013. I paid them In full and the IRS proceeded to reach into my bank account ( MONTHS AFTER I PAID THEM IN FULL PLUS and extra $1400 ) and the IRS took $15,000 out of my account so even though after talking to the IRS and PROVING I paid them in full PLUS penalties they had no right to STEAL the axtra $15,000 and they replied if you dont like it take us to Federal court and tell them. NO ATTORNEY wanted to help ME because I was not a Minority so they could not capitalize their name by Helping a Minority and NO ONE wants to go to Federal Court and try and Prove the IRS was wrong, NO ATTORNEY would help me. To this day MY HOUSE IS PAID OFF my BILLS ARE ALL PAID OFF AND TO THIS DAY I DO NOT QUALIFY FOR A EQUITY LOAN AND PERSONAL LOAN AND I DO NOT QUALIFY FOR A $500 LINE OF CREDIT. *** SO Tell Me Again HOW DO I SIGN UP FOR WHITE PRIVILAGE ???***

I’ve been turned down for civil service jobs in my city because I’m white. Scored higher on a track worker test for the NYCTA then my black brother in law(we took test together). I got 100 he got an 85. He got hired and I didn’t. True story.

I appreciate you so much, Van. Decades ago, when I was a teenager, I worked in Southeast, in a back-alley warehouse building. What you say about neighborhoods is very true--I was completely out of my element if I and my Norwegian co-worker walked a couple of blocks to the nearest corner store for something to drink at lunch. It's not comfortable being the ones who stick out. But we were never threatened directly (even though we did see that store get robbed more than once). I remember one time, though, that I spent a very nervous half-hour after work waiting in the alley for my ride, who was late. It was after dark, the warehouse was closed, and I didn't know what to expect. It's reassuring to know you and/or your family were nearby back then.
