Nice Job! I am rebuilding a Boley 4LE, It had had a hard life & was a basket case when i got it. I had the bed & saddle re ground & am fitting it back together at the moment, It is a steep learning curve. I own a Harrison 140 & its a great lathe, but the build quality of the Boley is as far above the Harrison as the Harrison is above a Warco, The Boley's are simply superbly built.

Beutiful lathe! I have a series 4 boley, a plain turning model with no carrige and a flat bed. It is icredibly precise and I love using it. On the back of the lathe, it has a lever the same as yours, I assume to operate a collet closer, but it has a smaller mechanism that I cannot understand even after taking it apart and re-assembling it. Does the lever on yours work as a collet closer?

Hi Rex, yes the lever to open and close the collet. Not sure what the mechanism on yours is, could it be a thread chaser screwcutting system that some Boleys had? Have a look at the lathes.co.uk site for examples.

Wow, what a beautiful job! I really admire the patience and determination it takes to do this.
I'm a big fan of any color besides dull machine grey- it's nice to see a light blue.
I wonder if some people who do this work use nickel plating to get things really shiny and keep the shine?

hey mate. beautiful lathe. I have an old boley leinen mlz4 and recently purchased a B&L L3. I'm going to attempt a repaint soon. The seamist is a perfect colour. much like on SBS' Leinen. just wondering about that red undercoat. Is that essential? Does it provide better bonding. i'm pretty tempted to just go over the top of the original paint but not sure. Tops mate, love the lathe.

If I was doing it again (hopefully never will), I wouldn't use the Norshield 2 pack primer, or any of the 2 pack paints for that matter. I did the carriage, tailstock and control panel with Norglass No Rust All Surface Primer and Weatherfast Enamel and it's proven to be the better option. The Northane 2 pack topcoat has started to blister and crinkle in a few places and it never went glass hard, don't know what I did wrong, I was following the directions to the letter. All coats were brushed, maybe it was applied a bit too thick. Anyway I wont be using it again, life's too short to stuff around with paint more than you have to. The original paint was so badly cracked and peeling from years of seeping oil that I really had to strip it all off. If you can get away with it I'd recommend not doing that. Good luck

Hi, I have the same Boley lathe, but missing the threading/change gear chart. And would you be able to send me a picture of it?

Which paint code did you use? I bought one just the other day, one manual without travel carriage or gearing. Will use it as a prrcision lathe for small parts. I might put a DRO on aswell and maybe a VFD and a different motor placement to avoid the akward stickout. Cheers, great looking lathe btw good inspiration!

@@Helikopterpop The paint on the main part of the lathe was mixed using Seamist and Black from Norglass, an Australian marine paint company. The control panel is just Seamist. I don't think it has a RAL equivalent. The stand is a nondescript grey I had lying around. Good luck with yours, I like the colour of your Storebro btw.

hello robert, good night the video of the boley lathe is very good and I can make more videos of this lathe, I have one just like it for several years I disassembled it from the gearbox on the back where it can be changed Where the big gears come in, and the counterpoint but I couldn't put it together anymore, it will be possible for you to help me with some photos or manual of how you put it together, I would be very grateful if you can help me many congratulations robert the lathe was excellent, excuse me For my English I am from Mexico many greetings.

Thanks for the compliments Ferrotrens. I assume it is the change gears and leadscrew assembly you are having trouble putting back together. There is only one Boley 4L manual that I know of and it doesn't have any assembly details unfortunately, link below. All I can suggest is looking through as many of the forum sites as you can find online and studying the pics, more links below. The only part that I found a bit tricky was the leadscrew clasp nut assembly, the German forum site has some good info on that. Good luck.
