Hemingway Daiquiri | How to Drink
Вставка
- Опубліковано 13 лип 2017
- On this episode of How to Drink, I’m partnering again with Luxardo and Anchor Distilling to bring you the Hemingway Daiquiri! This version is a classic alternative to the standard Daiquiri and my personal favorite way to prepare one, and the story goes that Ernest Hemingway had diabetes and he developed this recipe to be a less sweet version of his favorite drink. If you’re like me and love Hemingway then you should give this cocktail a try! Cheers!
That's not strictly true it turns out. The truth is that this drink was already on the menu at the Floridita bar in Havana Cuba where Hemingway was a regular where it was called Daiquiri #3. Hemingway was such a fan of the drink that it was eventually named after himself and a legend was born. Actually, it's also likely that it wasn't such an organic naming evolution, but rather that 'ol Papa Hemingway himself invented the whole diabetes story and named the drink after himself intentionally, he was of course a writer and renowned self promoter. I've read that the drink was also sometimes called a "Papa Doble" or "Papa Double" as he was known to order them "with twice as much rum and no sugar", which sounds likely. The daiquiri is of course a famous Cuban drink and there's no reason you shouldn't use Cuban rum here, in fact the original recipe calls for it. For me though, the Hemingway Daiquiri is particularly well suited to showing off a Rhum Agricole and that's my preferred configuration for this drink. If you prefer it with a Cuban, or a Peurto Rican, or really any rum at all feel free to make it that way, you really can't go wrong!
Hemingway Daiquiri Ingredients:
- .25 oz or 7 ml Luxardo Maraschino
- .25 oz or 7 ml Grapefruit Juice
- .75 oz or 21 ml Lime Juice
- 2 oz or 60 ml White Rhum Agricole
- Shake over Cracked Ice
- Pour in a Coupe
- Garnish with a Lime Wheel

I will never forget the first time I read the end to a “farewell to arms”... there was at least five minutes of stunned, depressed silence. You couldn’t write that ending today and get it published.

I get this joke!
Matthew Webb 😢
Boom.
Pun totally intended.
Ouch...
Dude I show you to everyone I can. Love your enthusiasm and presentation. Keep up the good work dude, we all appreciate it so much.
Thank you!
This is easily my favorite daiquiri as well! The grapefruit and Luxardo really set it off! Glad you uploaded this, people need to know about this one.
Me reading the very last pages of
"A farewell to arms":
- What the hell Hemingway???
My knowledge has grown by one more drink! Thank you good sir! You are a scholar, and a gentleman!
It's an honor and a privilege to have such students!
Hey Greg, have you ever considered working on your own cocktail recipe book? You have a unique and engaging personality and your cultural and historical references add so much to the watching experience that it could be excellent! Also, do you have a personal favorite cocktail book?
^^^^
Would definitely by that book.
Thank you and everyone who's seconding this. It's certainly something I'd like to do, I'm not super sure what exactly I can bring to the field that hasn't already been said, but I've got a couple of ideas percolating in my mind. Really I think it's just an issue of audience size... I feel like when I crack (and I think I will) that 100k subscriber mark writing a book will make a lot more sense.
How To Drink Time to make that book.
@@howtodrink Hello Mr Drink, I can't help but notice that you have both met and exceeded the 100K goal, so....?
I was thinking, if you're still looking for a book idea, that your series of cocktails based on movies might be something refreshing in a saturated booze book market.
Made these for my family during this quarantine put on some Cuban music wonderful drink and time we had , thank you
"Thank you, thing" was what I expected
Every week I feel like I have to say how awesome your videos are. Honestly, your episodes are so much better made and well done than anyone else's. You have great history, expand on the flavors (which is super helpful!), and make it fun to watch. Most people try way too hard to make stuff funny and it just feels fake, but this is so genuine, I actually laughed so hard at the mysterious hand! I think you might be my spirit animal. Awesome job as usual.
thank you so much! Spirit Animal in this case might be a rare excellent pun.
Great drink, will be my weapon of choice this new year's day.
I'm jealous of your quality vids Greg - haha. Keep up the good work!
Thank you! I'm jealous of your prolific posting!
He's a professional video editor.
This exchange is so cool to see now that you guys have collaborated
Hemingway did pathos like no one else. And you, Greg, do old school drinks like nobody else. Real daiquiris are clean and refreshing. Kudos
These are so well-edited. Love the pace. Keep this up, please.
Stunning work as always Greg. I'd really appreciate a video on how to make your very own bitters as I'm sure you've got a few tricks up your sleeve when it comes to making excellent ones. Thank you and never stop doing these!
The bitters is something I've thought a lot about, and plan to do it, but it's going to need to be a whole series of videos, a single episode really won't do it justice. It's on the horizon, but not sure when yet!
Huge Hemingway fan here, so this cocktail is one of my favs. Great video! I, er, have a “source” for Cuban Havana Club and I’ve been making my daiquiris with their 3 year rum. However, I love that you used Rhum agricole. No wonder yours tasted incredibly fresh! I’m definitely going to try it that way. Thanks!
Hey man you took the blooper like a man ! Love it that you actually did not edit it out ;)
keep going!!!
just finished bartending and normally I would be done with anything that has to do with making drinks but you sir are always able to entertain and delight. Thank you.
ArkAngel2904 means a lot to me thank you!
Found out about this marvelous Daiquiri when you launched this video, has been my favorite since! Drink it whenever we can get good grapefruit here in Sweden! Thank you dude!
Ok. this channel needs more subscribers now. love, love, love your content.
MUCH better without so many jump cuts, and I love the more obvious cuts. Keep up the awesome videos, they are funny and informative. This might be one of your best videos because of the outtakes being part of the show. I will make one of these over the weekend and put the photo up on my Google+. Cheers!
0:52 that not-so-subtle shift of the picture frame really has me curious
Coming from a bartender thats passionate about cocktails the "right way," your videos are refreshing (sweet pun) and original and thankfully― useful.
Thank you!
LOOOOOOOOL! You are too much! The look on your face..."Oooops!" Love it.
Very good video! The footage and sounds were excellent, especially those close-ups which really highlight the beauty of the drink. 🍸
And don't worry. We all drop an orange every now and then. And a helping HAND is always welcome. 😉
OK, I've watched a couple of your vids now, no point in fighting it... subbed!
Your video quality is top notch. You should honestly be posting more videos though. There's too many amazing cocktails that need your attention!
As always great episode ! I am always waiting for your next drink!
Thank you!
Your videos are great. Down to earth and fun. The way coctailmaking is supposed to be. Cheers from a fan in Denmark.
Thank you Denmark!
Awesome, I've been waiting for this for a while. This is definitely my favourite daiquiri as well. Down here limes get so expensive in the summer so using a little grapefruit is an excellent way to cut down on the cost of the drink. I'm heading away for the night so I'll be sure to pack my Maraschino.
BTW: You should try it on the rocks on a hot day.
I discovered your channel recently and I love it! Everything is perfect, from the set to the editing, lighting, recipes, text, etc. You rock man, keep up the good work and nice looks ;)
Cheers from Paris
Thank you so much!
Going to try this later this weekend!
So glad you’re growing now!
This is my favorite drink to sit and think to
G'day Greg. Kia Ora from New Zealand. This was the video that got me into cocktails. The literary and film references are great. You've got a whole host of guys out there who are trying to copy your format and they're falling flat on their asses. I can't wait for the next season. Keep up the passion, keep going for the stuff that inspires you. That's what keeps the new people coming to check it out. Love the classics and the Tiki. Look to NZ if you want to go way out for cocktail inspiration - cool stuff to be found here! Horopito, Kawakawa, manuka, pohutakawa, we've got those next level flavours! Cheers buddy.
Man I Love your channel just found it yesterday..
Awesome videos man! Not pretentious, just a bloke who loves his drinks!!!
Thanks!! but let’s be honest here, I am a tiny bit pretentious, right?
Just found this channel. LOVE IT!! lol. Get yer drink on! :-)
Not sure how I missed this one, but it just floated to my recommended list so here we are! Boy I love the photography in your vids, just very well done sir! Hemingway daiquiri, my favorite as well. Also a great test of a bar, you either get instant cred with the bartender or you get a “huh?” I once ordered a Hemingway Daiquiri at a bar named Hemingway’s (I kid you not) and was brought a large glass of ice with something red in it. So then I tried asking for a plain lime daiquiri, and she came back and said according to the bartender they had no lime mix, would it be ok if they just used lime juice. I asked for a beer.
im 16 and i havent drinken a whole lot over my life but i love this shoe and wish i could make some of these
Best channel ever - keep up the great work!
Thank you!
There are so many drinks that call for Maraschino, and they don't have it in my province. Fortunately, went on a road trip recently and came back with 2 bottles.
Thanks for this.
Just recently found your channel dude. Blown away by the quality and the presentation. As a lot of people surely have pointed out, you deserve way more subs. Keep at it (he said, selfishly)!
Thank you! I plan to keep it going with this for as long as I can, glad you found the show!
How To Drink Good to hear!
Missed the perfect opportunity to say "Thank you, Thing" when you were handed the orange.
yeah, seriously. the venn diagram that is the viewers of this show and Good Eats is pretty close to a circle, I think
@@johnc4236 honestly I was more referencing The Addams Family but I also love Good Eats so your comment is still correct. Ha
Wow this is a well-made video. I like how it's done. For a request to make a drink, make a video on Cuban drinks like the El Presidente or the Nacional. Keep up the great work.
Thanks for enjoying and I'm glad you found us! I'd like to do the Nacional but we did an El Presidente here: ua-cam.com/video/lWOHvGlYQcU/v-deo.html
Love the drink. Love your channel !
Thank you thank you!
Great show keep up the good work, you should the mojito sometime soon a good Caribbean drink.
Thank you!
OMG you did may favorite drink! Love you dude.
Xio thank you!
Hey! First of all, love Love LOVE your shows!! Always entertaining! Second, my 40th birthday is coming up in a week & a half. My family & friends are having my party at this great little bar down the road. I love bourbon. Any suggestions for a bourbon based drink for my big day? Thanks in advance!
ahhhh daiquiri, my secret love i always come back whenever i need a simple yet delicious sipper, guess ill need to stock up on maraschino after this vid,
Cheers! :D
Outstanding video!🤗
Awesome, was talking with my girlfriend the other day about Hemingway and his daiquiris
And his cats!
Love it! No questions. Just thought I'd leave some good vibes in the comment section.
thank you!
I thought this said Highway Daiquiri and now I really want you to make whatever drink that might be
Love your videos guy ! Even if i'm French and i don't understand 1 word out of two when you speakbecause it's too fast for me but it doesn't manner, you don't need to understand, the important is to watch and enjoy ^^
Si vous avez besoin d'un traduction, je peux le faire avec les sous-titres.
Was waiting for the "God I love that drink" lol.
A Farwell to Arms - and LEGS (I always called it!). Glad that dry and disappointing lime got a participation medal!
Sad-trombone-lime
Ace's video, definitely going to try this one out.
Thank you! Let me know if you like it!
Love your channel! Some drinks i would love to see your take on would be penicillin and corpse reviver nr2. Keep up the good work!
Both of those are fantastic drinks, but sadly they're not in the cards for the near future. I will get to them eventually though!
This is a late night Daiquiri for sure. Would love it at a nice bar, meanwhile the usual Daiquiri is a good day time drink. The taste of this daiquiri lasts for so long aswell!
Highly recommend putting mint in the squeezer when you juice the limes for a welcome kiss of mint
Clear rum, ice, and grapefruit (ideally pink grapefruit). Been done in Puerto Rico for the past 80 years.
Thank you, Thing.
My favorite drink.
Great video as always. The recipe I have on file (Highball app) for a Hemingway is slightly different and actually does call for some simple syrup. I tend to favor a straight up daiquiri or a Royal Bermuda Yacht Club when the mood strikes so I'll have to try your recipe and see if I prefer it.
Thank you! I've seen it done both ways, with simple and without and I think both are totally valid. I'd balance it on the rum and let that dictate how much sweetness it needs. If accounts are true though, Hemingway would have flipped if you put sugar in his!
Love the shirt dude
I love grapefruit; I love a well-made daquiri.....this is beyond wonderful; went with plantation three star, which is also delightful. & First use of the maraschino liquer. Best damn way to break in this bottle ;) we made it a double in true honor of papa doble! Thanks for this! Cheers!
Try adding up to 1/2 ounce of simple syrup.
A Hand? Like Alton Brown's Good Eats but for cocktails? I'm down with that.
He's got a mystery hand too? I actually had no idea. Maybe we should set them up together? Being a mystery hand is pretty lonely stuff.
Collab? Pretty sure he is a fan of the occasional libational imbibement and wants to do more on UA-cam...
I love Alton Brown, if you've got a connection there I'm all over it!
Hey. couple of quick tips:
Try shaking with just one large ice cube (don't crack it) and a couple of smaller once like you would get out of a tray. Dave Arnold goes over the reasons for his in Liquid Intelligence but it comes down to the big ice working the smaller ice around as you shake. Cracked ice gives you a colder cocktail faster, but it doesn't allow you to control dilution as much.
Also, you should try to add some more verticals to your shake. When I'm at work I usually do a two point shake. Moving the shake from closer to my body to slightly above my shoulders axis, bring the shaker back towards my body again, and then shaking again slightly below my shoulder height. This method incorporates a LOT more air. So much that my shaken cocktails fizz almost like they are carbonated when I pour them.
Ice is ice.
Hemingway is a depressing author and his family is depressing as well. Just the other day I was reading about how his dad, his sister, his brother, and himself all died by suicide. It’s sad how mental illness/dysfunction can run in families. This video has inspired me to finally buy some maraschino liqueur, so that’s a plus! 😀
Made it, loved it, and now I'm drunk on it 5 star drink and I'm No expert.
Bravo, just got to pick up some agricole now....and a grapefruit ;-)
Very cool of Thing to guest host this episode.
He's the most generous actor I've ever worked with.
Your getting more sponsor videos! Awesome man! I can feel how Hemingway wanted a less sweet version, Daiquiris usually just taste like sugar to me.
Marcus The Mouse I'm curious what ratio of lime to sugar you're using in those too sweet daiquiris?
Oh .5:1 sugar: lime... but it could also be that I find rum sweet... haha
The sun also rises is my favourite of his
Smart guy ("....going to take a nap!")! Lol
his face as the orange rolled away killed me you looked so just disappointed with it hehehe
1) Using rhum agricole, Big thumbs up! big respect!
2) You're bad a cracking the ice because you're using the wrong end of the spoon. That's what that heavy nub is for on the other end of a bar spoon.
no spilling no orange zest spraying porn today. but still satisfying as hell. thanks for your videos man. I've got half of the bottles I need for my own home bar, and all the inspiration from your saying in the intro. good luck to you, and hope to see 100k more subs for you next time.
That feeling when you randomly refesh youtube and see you uploaded 50 seconds ago.
I guess it's a good feeling, so thanks!
Definitely good! Loved the video, especially all the bloopers you left in
Nice that you add ml as well.
Thank you! The early episodes are missing it, it took me a while to figure out a way to do the graphics wihtout it feeling overwealming.
Hey! Just a little historical/cultural pointer on Rhum Agricole (or "Agrikol" in creole). The difference between Agricole rhum and normal rhum is similar to what separates a London Dry gin to an Aromatic gin : the Agricole rhum has no spices nor aromates, it is 'pure rhum'. Whereas normal rhum, it has spices and aromates that makes the taste more complex. It was developed in islands such as Haïti and Martinique a long time ago.
Great video
Cheers!
This is fantastic information, thank you!
My pleasure!
MobTec2001 wow thanks for the info!! Certainly did not know that
Ummm... Agricole rum is made from sugar cane juice.
Regular rum is made from molasses. Aromatics are not added.
@@howtodrink He is wrong.
regarding cracking ice: Get yourself a Lewis bag and a mallet to be legit. I just use a linen bar towel and meat tenderizer mallet.
do you think you can use clement vsop rhum here?
Is the mysterious hand under the table the reason you always look so happy when you're mixing drinks?
You sir are an AMERICAN treasure
I like your videos, your close-ups, excellent camera work. But the recipe that Leandro from The Educated Barfly shows, suits muy taste better. The ratios use more grapefruit juice and Luxardo Marraschino so it's less dry/numb, more flavorful.
Add up to 1/2 ounce of simple syrup and it will become much more drinkable.
I watch these videos at work
That seems fine to me!
Whoooo!!! up to 18,000 subscribers!! They grow up so fast :')
just shy of 19k really, and thanks for noticing!
Any big plans for 25k?! Make something terrible just to fuck with all the people who try out the recipes lol
how is your production quality that high? Do you have like a whole team or do you do it by yourself? Your videos are pretty awesome
Thank you! Yeah, there's a small team making this, I'm working on some behind the scenes stuff.
You should do a gimlet video. Can't believe you haven't made one yet
So i have a Angostura 1919, would that work in this drink instead of the clear rum ?
It’ll be a different drink but should be still good
Hold the ice cube in your hand and find the flattest side, then don't be shy... crack the very centre of it good and hard with your bar spoon, it should shatter, but you will be holding all the ice in your hand.
There are lots tweaks of this great drink, including the "regal shake" mod, but.....What watch are you wearing in this video?
I have some havana club left over from the zombie a couple weeks ago. Would that subsitute well in this one Greg?
p.s you the man, keep it up!
Oh yeah, Havana Club is perfect here, in the video description I think I say as much anyway, that the Rhum Agricole is sort of my take on it, but far from typical.
done sounds like a plan
Where do you get the Rhum Agricole? I've been wanting some Clement from Martinique but I can't find any domestic markets that carry it
How cold do you need to chill your glass for it to acquire a glow like that?
Not Enuff Limes ahem, well... in this case the glass was chilled in a wash of liquid nitrogen so VERY cold. But it’s also sitting on a glass insert in the bar with I think 2000 watts of light shooting up through its bottom, which helps a lot.
If you check out the Halekulani the liquid nitrogen chill combined with the humidity in the air caused the glass to kind of rain “snow” down off its sides.
Asked for one of these when out the other night; in fact I showed them this exact recipe. Liked it, but the combination of grapefruit juice and lime juice together I found to be just too savage on my throat. One is fine but definitely couldn't drink them all night. Unfortunate because I felt pretty cool when drinking it!
Add a bit of simple syrup.
Just had a zoom cocktail night - was looking for video tutorials on mixing drinks. These little videos seem to be the best that pop up on a search for these recipes! You don't drone on and on about a drink until we're bored, just a little commentary, keep it moving, highlight the important parts. Also you don't awkwardly angle the camera at your crotch. That is apparently a weird drink making video trend - thanks, but no thanks. Helping me through quarantine! Drinking your Aviation now - may make this daiquiri for my mom for Mother's Day (the Hemingway is one of her favorite drinks).
